Hard to say if it's a day that'll live long in terms of historical significance, but you can bet it'll be an important milestone in the history of Apple's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/iPad/">iPad</a> family. The next iPad (iPad 3? iPad HD? iPad 2S?) is due to be unveiled by Tim Cook at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, California, and we'll be here <strong>live</strong> to bring you the goods as they're unwrapped. If you've managed to arrive in this time wrinkle <em>before</em> 03/07/2012, there's still a reliable fabric of reality intact. Just be sure to bookmark this landing page and return at the time listed below, or a few hours early for those interested in seeing Tim and Darren live from the streets of SF.<br /><br /><center> <span id="event-datetime">March 7, 2012 10:00 AM PST</span></center><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/07/apple-ipad-3-liveblog/">Apple next-generation iPad liveblog!</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 07 Mar 2012 12:45:00 EST. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/10/apple-iphone-4s-pre-orders-exceed-one-million-in-first-24-hours/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/10/iphone4s-1317847253-1318251338.jpg" style="border-width: 0px; border-style: solid; margin: 4px;" /></a></div>
Last year's iPhone 4 launch brought more than 600,000 pre-orders <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/16/600-000-iphone-4s-pre-ordered-apple-apologizes-for-issues/">within the first 24 hours</a>. This year, that number nearly doubled, topping one million within one day of the device's pre-order availability through AT&amp;T, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/04/sprint-iphone-officially-announced-on-sale-october-14/">Sprint</a> and Verizon. Those that haven't pre-ordered the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/04/iphone-4s-officially-announced-with-a5-cpu/">iPhone 4S</a> can line up at Apple stores beginning at 8 a.m. on October 14th, or you can try your luck at pre-ordering now, though you may need to wait <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/08/apple-iphone-4s-now-shipping-in-one-to-two-weeks-over-200-000/">an extra week or two</a> to get your hands on Apple's new iOS smartphone. Jump past the break for Apple's PR.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update:</strong> Maybe not a huge surprise considering the numbers Apple announced earlier today, but Sprint has just let us know that it has sold out of the 16GB iPhone 4S in both black and white for pre-orders, and that it's not taking backorders. 32GB and 64GB models are still available in both colors, however, as is the 8GB iPhone 4.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/10/apple-iphone-4s-pre-orders-exceed-one-million-in-first-24-hours/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Apple iPhone 4S pre-orders exceed one million in first 24 hours (updated)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/10/apple-iphone-4s-pre-orders-exceed-one-million-in-first-24-hours/">Apple iPhone 4S pre-orders exceed one million in first 24 hours (updated)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 10 Oct 2011 08:46:00 EST. As Apple unleashes the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/04/meet-the-new-iphone-4s/">iPhone 4S</a> on AT&amp;T, Verizon and now Sprint, the biggest question on everyone's mind is how much will the phone <em>really</em> cost? As the third US carrier to sell the iPhone, Sprint has confirmed it will offer the device with the same unlimited plans as the other handsets in its lineup -- much to the relief of loyal customers hoping to make a belated switch to iOS. But we're betting those of you willing to swap providers are just a <em>little</em> curious as to how the plans stack up. Fortunately, we've crunched the numbers for you, so all you need to do is meet us after the break for that bottom line.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/06/how-much-will-the-iphone-4s-plans-set-you-back-on-sprint-verizo/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>How much will the iPhone 4S really cost on AT&amp;T, Verizon and Sprint?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/06/how-much-will-the-iphone-4s-plans-set-you-back-on-sprint-verizo/">How much will the iPhone 4S really cost on AT&amp;T, Verizon and Sprint?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 06 Oct 2011 16:15:00 EST. It looks like Apple's making good on its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/29/european-standardization-bodies-formalize-micro-usb-cellphone-ch/">promise</a> to standardize its charger port for EU territories. Behind all the big hitters announced by Apple today, an official micro-USB adapter has shuffled into the UK's online store in a very typically English way. Sure, there have been third-party options for a while, but this one's the real deal and looks set to go on sale on October 14th, alongside the newly crowned <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/04/meet-the-new-iphone-4s/">iPhone 4S</a>. We hope and expect that this will come packaged with Apple's latest phone in Euroland -- but on the off-chance that it doesn't, we'd question whether charging an extra &pound;8 obeys the spirit of the regulation.</p>

In Google's camp we chose the superlative <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/28/samsung-galaxy-s-ii-review/">Samsung Galaxy S II</a> models (focusing on the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/30/galaxy-s-ii-for-sprint-atandt-and-t-mobile-hands-on/">announced US variants</a>) along with the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/08/droid-bionic-review/">Motorola Droid Bionic</a> for its qHD and LTE chops. We then picked the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/01/htc-titan-and-radar-wp-7-mango-phones-revealed-we-go-hands/">upcoming HTC Titan</a> to bat for Microsoft's team. RIM's not included here since it's still stuck in the junior leagues. We left out the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/21/nokia-n9-first-hands-on/">intriguing Nokia N9</a> because it's a niche player. Check out the fancy table after the break -- the results are pretty clear cut!<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/04/iphone-4s-vs-the-smartphone-elite-galaxy-s-ii-bionic-and-tita/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>iPhone 4S vs. the smartphone elite: Galaxy S II, Bionic and Titan</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/04/iphone-4s-vs-the-smartphone-elite-galaxy-s-ii-bionic-and-tita/">iPhone 4S vs. the smartphone elite: Galaxy S II, Bionic and Titan</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 04 Oct 2011 16:02:00 EST. And that has to count for something, right? <em>Right</em>? While it's no iPhone 5 (not even close, really), the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/04/meet-the-new-iphone-4s/">iPhone 4S</a> is far from being "last year's iPhone," and the greatly enhanced camera, bolstered A5 dual-core processor and inbuilt voice command should provide plenty of reason for folks to upgrade if they're near the end of their contract. Furthermore, having the option <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/04/sprint-iphone-officially-announced-on-sale-october-14/">on Sprint</a> -- despite Apple almost announcing it as an afterthought -- is bound to make folks already entrenched on the Now Network think twice about what their next phone will be come upgrade time.<br /><br />We were able to spend a few quality moments with the refreshed iPhone 4 here at Apple's campus, the Sprint flavor no less, and as you might expect... it's an iPhone 4. But <em>S-ier</em>. Much in the same way that the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/17/iphone-3g-s-review/">3GS</a> improved the overall experience of the 3G, the 4S does likewise compared to the existing 4. The dual-core A5 chip is a laudatory improvement, and whisking about pages, loading the camera application and launching -- well, just about everything -- just feels zippier. As it should. The other major change, the antennas, weren't readily different at a glance, but as Mr. Cook stated, you'd have to be <em>iFixit</em> to notice (and we're sure they will).<br /><br />The most impressive part was the demo of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Siri/">Siri</a>, the new assistant that lets you do just about anything you can do on your phone -- but with your voice. We tried to psych it out with a bunch of random requests, including the history of Chester, Vermont (a lovely town) and the best Ramen places in San Francisco. Siri never faltered, never missed a beat. It worked as well as Scott's demo up on the stage. There's nothing better to say than that. We even sent ourselves a few text messages, which Siri transcribed to a T. Of course, the lady on the other end still sounds eerily robotic, but we're hoping for smoother responses from the alien within in a future update.<br /><br />The 8 megapixel sensor doesn't look any different from the outside, but we're trusting that Apple's re-engineered the interior. We snapped a few photos in the demo room to test and not a one came out as great as the retina-bursting contrasty pictures of balloons and flowers we saw in the demo, but then again, we didn't have any balloons or flowers to capture.<br /><br />As for weight and feel? Just like the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/22/iphone-4-review/">old king</a>. We'll be updating this post with our impressions live from Cupertino, and are working to get you some better pictures to look at. Hang tight -- they're coming!<br /><br /><strong>Update: </strong>Sorry, guys, but this time around Apple isn't allowing anyone to take photos or videos of the new iPhone in the hands-on area at its event. No big surprises here, but the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/04/iphone-4s-officially-announced-with-a5-cpu/">iPhone 4S'</a> older siblings are getting drastic price reductions. An 8GB <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/17/iphone-3g-s-review/">3GS</a> is now free on contract, while the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/22/iphone-4-review/">iPhone 4</a> is now only $99 with a carrier agreement -- that one bill gets you an 8GB iPhone 4. We've received no indication of cuts for other flavors of the old guard, but we suppose congratulations are in order for bargain hunters with limited iTunes libraries.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update:</strong> According to the Apple Store, the iPhone 4 is also "coming soon" to Sprint.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/04/apple-drops-iphone-prices-8gb-3gs-free-iphone-4-now-99/">Apple drops iPhone prices: 8GB 3GS free, iPhone 4 now $99</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 04 Oct 2011 14:37:00 EST. Despite The Now Network's stellar lineup of Android devices (and that increasingly valuable Everything plan), Sprint's been <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/28/sprint-posts-q2-2011-earnings-net-subs-up-contract-subs-down/">struggling</a> to gain postpaid subscribers for as long as most can remember. Granted, the prepaid arm is doing alright, but without Apple's cash cow sitting on its shelves -- well, let's just say the company's shareholders are apt to be pleased with today's turn of events. As you might have guessed, the specs for Sprint's version perfectly match the Verizon model -- both have an EVDO radio for 3G within the US, and a GSM one for service outside the country. As with AT&amp;T and Verizon, Sprint customers hankering for the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/04/iphone-4s-officially-announced-with-a5-cpu/">4S'</a> dual-core A5 processor, 8MP camera, dual-mode radio and Siri personal assistant can place their pre-orders starting this Friday, October 7th, with the phone officially landing a week later, on the 14th.<br /><br /><strong>Update: </strong>And now that Apple's site is live again we're seeing that Sprint is getting not just the iPhone 4S, but the 8GB iPhone 4 as well. That snazzy AirPlay Mirroring feature Apple showed off at WWDC earlier this year is back for an encore, and now it's strutting its stuff on the iPhone 4S. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/13/more-ios-5-features-get-their-moment-in-the-beta-testing-sun/">Previously</a> we saw AirPlay piping an iPad 2 to the big screen by way of Apple TV, but the upcoming iOS 5 features seems to have broadened it horizons -- letting Apple handsets get in on the HDTV mirroring love. The second coming of the iPhone 4? Sure enough, Tim Cook just pulled the covers off of the hotly-anticipated <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/02/is-this-apples-cheaper-iphone-4/">iPhone 4S</a> here in Cupertino, making 2011 the first year in the company's current stint in the smartphone business that it chose to launch three new handsets (Verizon's CDMA iPhone 4 included, of course). On the outside the 4S looks exactly like its predecessor, but on the inside it's "all new." Apple has jammed a dual-core A5 CPU inside alongside a new dual-core GPU that supposedly boosts graphics performance by up to 7x. Up front is the same 3.5-inch Retina display we've all come to know and love, and around back is a glass plate. Those antennae around the sides (which caused many users so much trouble) have been revamped and iOS will intelligently switch between two different sets on the fly to avoid dropping calls no matter how you hold it. Those antennae are connected to a dual-mode GSM and CDMA radio that will let Apple's handset roam the globe while enjoying either 14.4Mbps HSPA+ or EV-DO Rev. A.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4s-0/">iPhone 4S</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4s-0/#4500034"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/10/apple-letstalkiphone2011-10-04i4s1-0_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4s-0/#4500036"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/10/apple-letstalkiphone2011-10-04i4s1-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4s-0/#4500037"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/10/apple-letstalkiphone2011-10-04i4s1-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4s-0/#4500039"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/10/apple-letstalkiphone2011-10-04i4s1-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4s-0/#4500040"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/10/apple-letstalkiphone2011-10-04i4s1-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4s-the-camera/">iPhone 4S: The camera</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4s-the-camera/#4500593"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/10/camera_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4s-the-camera/#4500263"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/10/ca1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4s-the-camera/#4500253"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/10/ca15_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4s-the-camera/#4500255"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/10/ca12_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4s-the-camera/#4500261"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/10/ca2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/meet-the-new-iphone-family/">Meet the new iPhone 4S</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/meet-the-new-iphone-family/#4500840"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/10/jrv1iphone4s3upphotosirisprgbdprint_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/meet-the-new-iphone-family/#4500841"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/10/jrv2iphone4suspfwhtphotocropprint-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/meet-the-new-iphone-family/#4500842"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/10/jrv3iphone4suspfwhtremindersprint_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/meet-the-new-iphone-family/#4500843"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/10/jrv4iphone4suspfhrzwhtcameravideoprint_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/04/iphone-4s-officially-announced-with-a5-cpu/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>iPhone 4S officially announced: lands October 14th starting at $199 in sizes up to 64GB, coming to Sprint</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/04/iphone-4s-officially-announced-with-a5-cpu/">iPhone 4S officially announced: lands October 14th starting at $199 in sizes up to 64GB, coming to Sprint</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 04 Oct 2011 13:54:00 EST. While the iPhone 4S takes the headlines with its dual antennas and upgraded processor, we also have a new white <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/01/ipod-touch-gets-revamped/">iPod touch joining the family</a>. Pricing for the "#1 portable game player" (Apple's words, with some numbers to back them up) still starts at $199 for the 8GB version, going up $399 for a 64GB. All will be available in black or white October 12th. There's no hardware changes to speak of, so hopefully all those sweet <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Ios5/">iOS 5</a> upgrades are enough to hold you. Check out the full details in our live blog or in the press release, conveniently available after the break.<br />

Apple keeps coming with the news from its "<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/04/apples-lets-talk-iphone-keynote-liveblog/?sort=newest&amp;refresh=0">Let's talk iPhone</a>" event, and the latest is a price drop for its diminutive PMP, the nano. From now on, you'll be forking over $129 for an 8GB version and $149 for twice the tunage space. Additionally, Cupertino's tossing in big icons -- as opposed to the grid of 4 that was the only option previously -- 16 new clocks (Mickey Mouse included!) to go with all those <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/29/hex-ships-ipod-nano-watch-band-dares-you-to-destroy-it-video/">fabulous watch accessories</a>, and workout tracking abilities right out of the box so you no longer need a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/07/app-review-nike-gps/">Nike+</a> shoe dongle to see how many calories you've burned. Not bad for a little guy, eh? Full PR after the break.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update:</strong> Thanks to the folks over at <em>9to5 Mac</em>, we now know that owners of 2010 nanos will get the software update with the new features too.<br />

We already had the details on <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/06/apple-announces-itunes-in-the-cloud/">iTunes Match</a>, but now we've got a ballpark release date. According to Apple, the iTunes service will make its debut by the end of the month in the great U S of A, and it can be yours for $24.99 a year. Here's hoping Apple's got a nice, clean (DRM-free 256kbps AAC file) version of Monster Mash floating in the cloud for your Halloween listening pleasure.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/04/itunes-match-hits-us-end-of-october-for-24-99/">iTunes Match hits US 'end of October' for $24.99</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 04 Oct 2011 13:50:00 EST. Mark your calendars, kids. Scott Forstall's on stage here at "Let's Talk iPhone" and just gave a hard date for iOS 5's arrival: expect it to hit next week, on October 12th, with Apple's iCloud service launching that same day. Though developers have been <a href="http://www.engadget.com/wwdc-2011/apple-ios-5-hands-on-preview/">playing with it</a> for four months now, this will be the first time the general, non-tinkering public gets to taste its 200-plus new features -- a list that includes Newsstand, Reminders, iMessage, WiFi sync, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/04/apple-announces-find-my-friends-feature-for-ios-5/">Find My Friends</a>, split keyboards, AirPlay mirroring for the iPad 2 (<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/04/airplay-mirroring-coming-to-iphone-4s-not-just-for-ipads/">and iPhone 4S</a>!) and the Notification Center. (And, you know, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/04/cards-app-for-iphone-sends-snail-mail-best-wishes-for-a-price/">greeting cards</a>, if you're into that sort of thing.) iOS 5 will be free for iPhones, iPads and iPod Touches, while iCloud's standard 5GB of email / storage will come gratis to folks already using iOS 5 and Lion. Take note that if it's iTunes Match you're after (and you live in the states), you'll have to sit tight <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/04/itunes-match-hits-us-end-of-october-for-24-99/">a few more weeks</a> yet.<br />

We've got at least one completely unexpected announcement from Apple's Let's Talk iPhone Event: a new app that sends out greeting cards. For $2.99 within the US and $4.99 internationally, sending a greeting card the old fashioned way is just one click away on your mobile, complete with notifications when your card is mailed. Taking shots at PC makers and Android's apps are a given, but a bomb dropped on Hallmark? Welcome to the Tim Cook era. Check the liveblog and gallery below for more details.<br />

Tim Cook kicked off today's '<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/04/apples-lets-talk-iphone-keynote-liveblog/?sort=newest&amp;refresh=0">Let's talk iPhone</a>' event by the numbers, mentioning that "the MacBook Pro and iMac are the number one best selling notebook and desktop in the United States." Apparently the Mac platform grew by 23 percent over the last year, versus a four percent growth from the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/PC/">PC</a> sector. Brandishing a chart tracing the trend back five years, Cook says that Apple is now pushing 60 million Mac users worldwide, leaving Cupertino just shy of owning a fourth of the personal computer market. "There are still 77 percent of people who are buying something else," Cook said, "We have an incredibly high ceiling here. We have a long way to go."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/04/tim-cook-macbook-pro-and-imac-are-the-best-selling-notebook-and/">Tim Cook: Macbook Pro and iMac are the best selling notebook and desktop in the US</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 04 Oct 2011 13:16:00 EST. Before we get to the real meat of things, Tim Cook's just trotted out some Lion numbers -- six million copies downloaded <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/20/apple-mac-os-x-lion-available-now-in-the-app-store/">since launch,</a> to be exact. According to the big Apple's new CEO, that's a growth of 80 percent over <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/26/snow-leopard-review/">Snow Leopard</a>. Of course, those numbers would mean nothing without a little comparison. Cook says it took Windows 7 20 weeks to meet 10 percent of Windows' install base, compared to the two weeks it took Lion to reach the same portion of OS X users.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/software/" rel="tag">Software</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/04/apple-six-million-copies-of-os-x-lion-downloaded-since-launch/">Apple: Six million copies of OS X Lion downloaded since launch</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 04 Oct 2011 13:10:00 EST. It started with a pair of images buried in the Apple store's HTML code. But, perhaps more telling, was the page for the Ginza, Japan store listing the launch of the iPhone 4S as a featured event starting at 8am on October 14th. While that doesn't necessarily mean the tweaked iPhone 4 variant will launch everywhere on the same day, it seems a safe bet that the US and UK will be getting in on the action that Friday morning.<br /><br /><strong>Update</strong>: Well, that was short lived. We did it <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/06/engadget-broadcasting-live-from-wwdc/">at WWDC</a>, and we're doing it from 1 Infinite Loop in Cupertino, California. Apple's holding its hotly-anticipated <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/iPhone5/">iPhone 5</a> (and iPhone 4s?) launch event here this morning, and we're on-hand to bring you a bit of pre- and post-show banter. Join Tim Stevens, Darren Murph and a plethora of Sesame Street characters* as we break down what's likely to go down during today's "Let's Talk iPhone" event. And once we're ushered inside (you know, where live video streams <u><em>aren't</em></u> allowed), follow our liveblog <strong><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/04/apples-lets-talk-iphone-keynote-liveblog/">right here</a>.</strong> Check out the video after the break.<br />

It's all going down tomorrow, and you can bet your bottom dollar (or last prepaid SIM, whichever you prefer) that we'll be liveblogging it all on these pages right here. But prior to Apple's "Let's Talk iPhone" event, we'll be set up outside of the company's Cupertino headquarters in order to bring <strong>live</strong> pre-show analysis, including the very latest rumblings from the Apple mecca and any top-secret tips on ditching work in order to follow along. Just so we're clear, Apple doesn't allow live video streaming <em>during</em> the keynote, but our usual liveblog can be followed October 4th starting at 1:00PM ET (10:00am local time) <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/04/apples-lets-talk-iphone-keynote-liveblog/"><strong>right here</strong></a>. We've had a few weeks to get accustomed to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/wwdc-2011/apple-ios-5-hands-on-preview/">iOS 5</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/20/apple-os-x-lion-10-7-review/">Mac OS X Lion</a>, but one headlining feature has been notably inaccessible since it was unveiled earlier this summer. During his <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/WWDC/">WWDC</a> keynote, Steve Jobs <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/06/icloud-unveiled-at-wwdc/">touted iCloud</a> as a service that will sync many of your Apple devices, for free. Macs, iPhones, iPads, and even Windows computers can synchronize documents, contacts, calendar appointments, and other data. You'll also be able to back up your iOS devices remotely, use an Apple-hosted email account, and store your music in the cloud. Well, this week <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/01/apple-launches-icloud-and-iwork-betas-confirms-pricing-for-extr/">Apple finally lit up</a> its cloud-based service for developers, letting some of us take a sneak peek at the new service.<br />
<br />
Apple also announced pricing, confirming that you'll be able to add annual subscriptions with 10GB ($20), 20GB ($40), or 50GB ($100) of storage 'atop your free 5GB account. We took our five gig account for a spin, creating documents in <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Pages/">Pages</a>, spreadsheets in <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Numbers/">Numbers</a>, and presentations in <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Keynote/">Keynote</a>, then accessing them from the iCloud web interface to download Microsoft Office and PDF versions. We also tried our luck at iOS data syncing and the soon-to-be-controversial Photo Stream, so jump past the break for our full iCloud hands-on.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-icloud-and-iwork-beta-hands-on/">Apple iCloud and iWork beta hands-on</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-icloud-and-iwork-beta-hands-on/#4339635"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-02-1-1_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-icloud-and-iwork-beta-hands-on/#4339636"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-02-1-2_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-icloud-and-iwork-beta-hands-on/#4339637"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-02-1-3_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-icloud-and-iwork-beta-hands-on/#4339671"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-02-photo-16_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-icloud-and-iwork-beta-hands-on/#4339727"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-02-photo-9-1_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/02/apple-icloud-and-iwork-beta-for-ios-hands-on/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Apple iCloud and iWork beta for iOS hands-on</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/02/apple-icloud-and-iwork-beta-for-ios-hands-on/">Apple iCloud and iWork beta for iOS hands-on</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 02 Aug 2011 17:48:00 EST. Well, there's clearly no better way to legitimize <em>any</em> new product than to have a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/13/shanzhai-steve-jobs-makes-a-special-appearance-in-hong-kong-vid/">faux Steve Jobs</a> hawking it on-stage, in front of dozens of applauding mock journalists, with a 20-foot <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/iPad2/">iPad 2</a> projected behind. The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/stevejobs">Jobs</a> / John Stamos hybrid dropped by to pitch a Taiwanese company's vast selection of tea, of all things, for a TV advertisement that's apparently currently airing in Taiwan. Decked out in light jeans, a black mock turtleneck and sneakers, the impersonator even matched Steve's hair color, rimless glasses, and current weight. The only thing missing was an actual Apple product -- and <i>months</i> of media speculation. The "keynote" even ended with "one more thing," as they often do: Tea drinkers will have a shot at winning a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/16/keepin-it-real-fake-android-based-ipad-knockoff-gets-unboxed-f/">bonafide iPad 2</a> with each purchase of oolong, milk, or Apple-infused Tong Yi Cha.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/11/steve-jobs-impersonator-officiates-mock-keynote-hawks-taiwanese/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Steve Jobs impersonator officiates mock keynote, hawks Taiwanese tea (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/11/steve-jobs-impersonator-officiates-mock-keynote-hawks-taiwanese/">Steve Jobs impersonator officiates mock keynote, hawks Taiwanese tea (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 11 Jul 2011 04:27:00 EST. The unveiling of iOS 5 at this year's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/06/wwdc-2011-liveblog-steve-jobs-talks-ios-5-os-x-lion-icloud-an/">WWDC keynote</a> brought a wonderful <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/06/apples-ios-5-all-the-details/">feast of features</a>, but it left us wondering if the iPhone 3GS would be updated with a few cards short of a full deck -- the same way the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/21/iphone-3g-ios-4-and-you-whats-missing-spoiler-multitaski/">3G was treated</a> last year. Reports are starting to flow in from folks who've tested it, so let's get the bad news out of the way first: yes, some features are being withheld from the 3GS. The good news? They're much more minor than we feared. So far, it appears that full <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/06/apple-brings-twitter-integration-to-ios/">Twitter integration</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/06/notifiction-center-for-ios-5-announced/">notifications</a> are included; the newsstand and App Store are also intact, as well as the Safari reading list and grid lines in the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/06/apple-adds-camera-shortcut-to-lock-screen-volume-up-shutter-key/">camera</a>. The only things we see missing so far are the photo editing features in the camera and the tab bar in Safari. So breathe a deep and well-deserved sigh of relief, fans, because your iPhone 3GS isn't obsolete -- at least, not yet. The full <a href="http://www.engadget.com/wwdc-2011/apple-ios-5-hands-on-preview/">walkthrough</a> of iOS 5 on the 3GS is right after the break.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/09/ios-5-imposes-minor-feature-limitations-on-iphone-3gs-3g-owners/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>iOS 5 imposes minor feature limitations on iPhone 3GS, 3G owners still bitter</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/09/ios-5-imposes-minor-feature-limitations-on-iphone-3gs-3g-owners/">iOS 5 imposes minor feature limitations on iPhone 3GS, 3G owners still bitter</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 09 Jun 2011 05:41:00 EST. It's here, the moment BlackBerry owners been waiting for since the original iPhone launched: iMessage. Apple has just announced its new data-based push messaging service at WWDC, which looks to be a full-on competitor to the venerable BBM. This service works on an iOS device of any flavor, and lets you send text messages, photos, videos, and contacts to anyone else with one too. It also supports group chats and integrates with the new <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/06/notifiction-center-for-ios-5-announced/">Notification Center</a> in iOS 5. According to Scott Forstall, it "works over WiFi or 3G, in case you were wondering," which is yet another blow for RIM. The final nail in the coffin for those of you who simply 'can't live without BBM:' delivery and read confirmations. Boom.<br />

Love your iPhone, but hate all of the PC-based tethering it entails? Apple has some good news: the company is taking its "post-PC" stance a step further, letting you activate your smartphone straight out of the box without syncing it to a computer. Also big news is the addition of over-the-air updates, which will let you receive changes without plugging the handset in. And some big news for music fans: users will be able to sync their iTunes libraries over WiFi connections with the update.<br />

	It looks like <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/iOS5/">iOS 5</a> has a new approach to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/notifications,ios">notifications</a> -- and we like what we see so far. Notification Center aggregates your various app alerts and eschews the pop-ups for a decidedly Android-esque list that appears at the top of our your screen when you you get a Facebook message, or a tweet, or when you miss a call. Swiping down brings you to the list, and swiping across any instance takes you to the corresponding app. Feast your eyes on the gallery below for a closer look.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/ios-5-notification-center/">iOS 5 Notification Center</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/ios-5-notification-center/#4194878"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/wwdc-11-notifications-01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/ios-5-notification-center/#4194879"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/wwdc-11-notifications-02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/ios-5-notification-center/#4194880"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/wwdc-11-notifications-03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/ios-5-notification-center/#4194881"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/wwdc-11-notifications-04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/ios-5-notification-center/#4194884"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/wwdc-11-notifications-05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/06/notifiction-center-for-ios-5-announced/">Notification Center for iOS 5 announced</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 06 Jun 2011 13:48:00 EST. It's been available on the iPad since that device launched, and now Apple has <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/07/apple-screenshot-confirms-iwork-coming-to-iphone/">finally</a> brought its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/iwork">iWork</a> suite of productivity apps to the iPhone and iPod touch. That, of course, includes Keynote, Pages and Numbers, which are all now universal apps that run the same $9.99 apiece as their iPad-only predecessors -- current users can simply upgrade for free, thankfully. Head on past the break for the complete press release.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/31/apple-brings-iwork-to-iphone-and-ipod-touch/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Apple brings iWork to iPhone and iPod touch</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/31/apple-brings-iwork-to-iphone-and-ipod-touch/">Apple brings iWork to iPhone and iPod touch</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 31 May 2011 12:21:00 EST. Not a huge surprise here, but Apple's just announced iTunes 10 alongside <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/01/apple-announces-redesigned-ipod-shuffle-brings-the-buttons-back/">all those</a> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/01/ipod-nano-redesigned/">new</a> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/01/ipod-touch-gets-revamped/">iPods</a>, complete with a brand new logo that finally ditches the CD. What is something of a surprise, however, is the standout feature of iTunes 10: Ping. That's Apple's take on a music-centered social network (think Last.fm), which will let you follow people (including artists), establish a "circle of friends," post comments, check out custom song and album charts, and even find over 17,000 concert listings (which you can of course let folks know your attending). What's more, Ping is also making the jump to the iPhone and iPod touch, and it's available with iTunes 10 today. Head on past the break for the full press release. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-announces-itunes-10/">Apple announces iTunes 10 with Ping social network</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-announces-itunes-10/#3319884"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/appleios42ip0dtunes091201001_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-announces-itunes-10/#3319885"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/appleios42ip0dtunes091201002_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-announces-itunes-10/#3319886"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/appleios42ip0dtunes091201003_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-announces-itunes-10/#3319900"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/appleios42ip0dtunes091201004_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-announces-itunes-10/#3319902"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/appleios42ip0dtunes091201005_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div> <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/itunes-10-0/">iTunes 10</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/itunes-10-0/#3320783"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/itunes10-01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/itunes-10-0/#3320785"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/itunes10-02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/itunes-10-0/#3320788"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/itunes10-03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/01/apple-announces-itunes-10/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Apple announces iTunes 10 with Ping social network</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/01/apple-announces-itunes-10/">Apple announces iTunes 10 with Ping social network</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 01 Sep 2010 13:39:00 EST. Apple has just revealed its 6th generation iPod nano, which has been outfitted with just about the boldest redesign the portable media player has experienced yet. Gone is the clickwheel, to be replaced with a touchscreen interface and a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/26/supposed-next-gen-ipod-touch-nano-shuffle-cases-surface-onlin/">shuffle-esque</a> square form factor. It's now 46 percent smaller and 42 percent lighter. Hard volume buttons on the side and a clip on the back provide the minimal hardware accouterments to that multitouch touchscreen, while the inside provides enough juice for 24 hours of audio playback. Seven total color variants will be up for grabs, including a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/all/productred">Product RED</a> option, with prices set at $149 for 8GB of storage or $179 for 16GB and pre-orders being taken today.<br />
<br />
P.S. -- If you were looking for that <em><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/10/ipod-nano-unboxed-camera-gets-tested-against-the-mean-streets-o/">awesome</a></em> camera the nano <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/09/apple-slaps-video-camera-into-new-ipod-nano/">used to have</a>, stop. It ain't there anymore. Steve Jobs just dropped a few numbers on us. Firstly, that big one above, 120 million <a href="http://www.engadget.com/all/ios">iOS</a> devices -- that's iPhones, iPod touches and iPads, for the forgetful in the class -- have been shipped since the original iPhone made its grand debut <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/09/the-apple-iphone/">back in 2007</a>. 230,000 is the next number of significance -- that's the tally of <em>daily</em> iOS activations. Moving down to even more granular stats, Apple says 200 apps are being downloaded every second, which has resulted in the mind-bending 6.5 billion total downloads of iOS applications. This is from a catalog of over 250,000 total apps, with 25,000 of them being available for the iPad. Yeah, Apple's just blowing its horn, but it sure is a big one, ain't it?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/01/Apple-ships-120-million-devices/">Apple ships 120 million iOS devices since iPhone's launch</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 01 Sep 2010 13:04:00 EST.
