That's ending soon, as the Chinese government just gave the cellular version (A1430) the all-clear. Like in most parts of the world, Apple's slate <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/28/apple-offers-refund-over-australian-4g-ipad-confusion/">won't use LTE</a> given the lack of any established network in the area; HSPA's as good as it will get. The clearance is slightly odd given that the State Administration for Industry and Commerce is <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/24/chinese-offical-says-proview-owns-ipad-trademark-in-china-court/">leaning in Proview's direction</a> when it comes to iPad trademark ownership. With the iPad still <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/23/shanghai-court-rejects-ipad-ban/">legally available</a> in the country, though, it's safe to say that official 3G iPad carrier China Unicom is happy to prepare for a rush of customers who want to buy a cellular iPad without using the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/08/smugglers-use-zip-line-and-slingshot-to-sneak-ipads-into-hong-ko/">zipline delivery method</a>.</p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/30/china-greenlights-apple-third-gen-ipad-for-3g-use/">China greenlights Apple's third-gen iPad for 3G use, China Unicom smiles knowingly</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 30 May 2012 15:41:00 EST. It's not often that we see unreleased iPads get the auction treatment, however, which makes a new listing that much more interesting. A 16GB WiFi version of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/03/apple-ipad-review/">original iPad</a> has popped up sporting a second dock connector on its side, a feature that we'd previously only spotted in Apple design patents. The advantage, of course, would be to keep the iPad powered and synced while it's playing a favorite movie in landscape mode. While we don't know how one aaps69 managed to get hands on the tablet, there's some clear signs that the seller didn't just carve an extra hole in the aluminum for kicks: the slate is running the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/12/next-generation-iphone-escapes-in-vietnam/">familiar SwitchBoard tool</a> that Apple uses for in-house diagnostics, and there's a raft of old and incomplete part details that suggest this particular iPad was never meant for store shelves. We'll likely never know why Apple left us in a land of solo dock connectors, but we'd take a peek at the source link before it's gone, as more recent Apple prototypes at auction tend to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/10/prototype-macbook-pro-repair-parts-returned-to-owner-3g-antenna/">return to the source</a> quickly.</p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/28/og-ipad-prototype-with-dual-dock-connectors-hits-ebay/">OG iPad prototype with dual dock connectors hits eBay, teases us with convenience we never had</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 28 May 2012 12:40:00 EST. While Hon Hai is getting the rosy side of the deal for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Sharp/">Sharp's</a> TV-oriented Sakai plant, it's now thought to be paying Sharp for display technology that would go into a new factory in Chengdu for small- and medium-sized LCDs used for smartphones and tablets. If all dovetails as nicely as the two would like, the joint venture would see advanced mobile displays manufactured on the cheap -- the best of both worlds. Suffice it to say that there's a few companies that might be interested, as clients like Apple are <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/02/foxconn-plant-reopens-resumes-operations-following-explosion/">no strangers to Chengdu</a>. Before you let visions of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/14/sharp-rolls-out-high-res-igzo-lcds-destined-for-tablets-laptops/">IGZO-based LCDs</a> on every iPad and iPhone dance through your head, though, remember that neither Hon Hai nor Sharp has confirmed anything -- and that the plant wouldn't be up and running until 2013 at the earliest, even if everything's in sync.</p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/24/sharp-reportedly-helping-hon-hai-precision-mobile-displays/">Sharp reportedly getting cozy with Hon Hai Precision, helping to make phone and tablet LCDs in Chengdu</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 24 May 2012 15:48:00 EST. Don't fret, as the Android app has just been given similarly loving treatment. The interface shares the reworked stream look that we saw on iOS while keeping the swipe-to-switch category filters that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/google+plus">Google+</a> has used from the start. There's even small rewards for having to watch your iPhone friends go first: you can now start a Hangout video chat from the main menu, get ringing Hangout notifications, download photos directly from conversations and edit your posts after the fact. The new look has already proved polarizing, but if you're the sort who revels in the purity of a Google social network running on a Google platform, you can now try the overhaul for yourself.</p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/24/google-on-android-gets-ui-remake/">Google+ on Android gets its turn at a UI remake, extra Hangout and photo features in the bargain</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 24 May 2012 10:59:00 EST. So, what does that mean? It means it's high-time that we cast a fresh glance over the tablet landscape, took in a deep breath of slate-infused air and exhaled a hearty Engadget tablet buyer's guide. We've been running the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/02/smartphone-buyers-guide-spring-2012/">smartphone</a> equivalent for a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/23/smartphone-buyers-guide-the-best-phones-for-verizon-atandt-spr/">little while</a> now, so we thought it only fair to give the now-mature tablet category one of its own. We're going to look at the main categories of fondleslabbery and carve out what we think are the finest offerings on the market right now. The British carrier has started deploying a full 42Mbps to "major" cities on the isle, most likely including London as one of them. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Vodafone/">Vodafone</a> would argue that going dual-carrier is old hat, having started a year earlier, but it's also peaking at 28.8Mbps -- and frequent data advocate <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Three/">Three</a> doesn't start its own proper 42Mbps deployment until the summer. A round of 23 more countries is getting the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/ipad+2012">2012 refresh</a> on May 11, most of it being South American countries such as <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/16/report-foxconns-brazil-factory-ready-for-business-will-begin/">Foxconn's new manufacturing hub</a>, Brazil. Parts of Africa and southeast Asia will be served as well, such as the home of our favorite <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/13/new-ipad-spotted-in-the-wild/">unofficial hands-on sessions</a>, Vietnam. Seven Persian Gulf countries will get their Retina Display fix one day later. By the time the weekend is up, the iPad will be available in nearly 90 countries on this planet, which makes it highly likely that anyone reading this article can find the slate in a local retail store.</p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/09/new-ipad-to-hit-30-more-countries-this-weekend/">New iPad to hit 30 more countries this weekend, work on its tan</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 09 May 2012 01:26:00 EST. You should. Apple has just let loose iOS 5.1.1, a seemingly minor point update that actually promises to fix quite a few (potentially) substantial quirks. Coming two months to the day after the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/07/ios-5-1-update-now-rolling-out/">iOS 5.1 software update</a>, the extra 0.0.1 is said to improve reliability of the HDR option for photos taken using the Lock Screen shortcut, address bugs that could prevent the new iPad from switching between 2G and 3G networks and solve a few issues that were affecting AirPlay video playback "in some circumstances." There's also improved reliability for syncing Safari bookmarks and Reading List, and Apple has purportedly fixed an issue where 'Unable to purchase' alert could be displayed after successful purchase. Sucked the update down yourself? Let us know how it goes in comments below, and peek the full changelog just after the break.</p><p> <strong>Update</strong>: Looks like iOS 5.1.1 has <a href="http://www.redmondpie.com/jailbreak-5.1.1-ios-on-iphone-ipad-ipod-touch-using-redsn0w-tutorial/">already been jailbroken</a>. Disappointed. Let down. Unsurprised. All of those emotions ran through my being at one point or another following Apple CEO Tim Cook's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/24/apple-q2-2012-earnings-report-ipad-iphone-sales/">comments regarding "converged" devices</a>, but if anything, his denial has made me all the more hungry for this particular device. For months -- heck, maybe even years -- I've waited for Sir <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/20/apples-jony-ive-waxes-eloquently-about-new-imacs-on-video/">Jonathan Paul Ive</a> and co. to finally nail the concept of a laptop / tablet hybrid. In many ways, Apple managed to get right on a smartphone in 2007 what I felt was wrong holding a BlackBerry. I still think the iPad's screen is about 2.7-inches too large for my own personal tastes, but the world at large has affirmed that it nailed that design, too. Oh, and the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/25/macbook-air-review-mid-2011/">MacBook Air</a>? C'mon -- we all know it's the thin-and-light you always wanted, and given that it'll run Windows with poise, it's arguably the sexiest Windows laptop currently on the market.</p><p> The point? Apple has waited for companies to flounder about with certain designs before, all while perfecting its own take for a future release. Windows-based tablets were <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2004/09/23/entelligence-why-people-arent-buying-tablet-pcs/">flooding out</a> in the early noughties, and believe it or not, Toshiba was already giving the tablet / laptop hybrid thing a whirl in 2003 with the <a href="http://www.mobiletechreview.com/notebooks/toshiba3500_xp_tablet.htm" target="_blank">Portege 3500</a>. Apple waited over half a decade to usher in the iPad, and the rest -- as they say -- is <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/24/365-million-ios-devices-in-play-ipad-taking-off-in-education/">history</a>. The iPhone followed a similar path; companies came before it and did their best to produced pleasing, long-lasting, highly usable smartphones, but the iPhone completely changed the trajectory of everything that came after. Love it or hate it, it's hard to imagine a 2012 with Windows Phone in it had Apple not pinned Windows Mobile in a corner back in '07.</p><p> So, if Apple has shown an ability to thrive with designs that others have experimented with, why is the "converged" laptop / tablet a nonstarter?</p><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/07/editorial-apple-toaster-refrigerator-converged-tablet-laptop-hybrid/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Editorial: Apple isn't making a 'converged' laptop / tablet hybrid, but I still want one</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/07/editorial-apple-toaster-refrigerator-converged-tablet-laptop-hybrid/">Editorial: Apple isn't making a 'converged' laptop / tablet hybrid, but I still want one</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 07 May 2012 13:00:00 EST. Leave it to the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/cydia">Cydia</a> Store to provide a new app that delivers individual, rotatable, scalable, untabbed windows. Quasar, from developer Pedro Franceschi, let's you do just that across multiple apps -- without relying on home button double-taps or tricky multi-finger gestures. Well, at least you'll be able to console yourself with your very own tiny iPad arcade. According to Ion, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/icade%20core/">iCade Core</a>, the latest in the company's line of nostalgia-inducing Bluetooth tablet controllers, will be shipping to UK customers in mid-June for ￡49.99 ($81) a pop. The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/08/icade-cuts-the-fat-for-ces-introduces-handheld-brother/">iCade Mobile</a> will be hitting right around the same time for the same price. Now you'll finally be able to experience <em>Pac-Man </em>the way it was meant to played: on a tablet attached to an oversized joystick.</p><p></p><p></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/24/icade-core-coming-to-a-tiny-arcade-near-you-in-june/">iCade Core coming to a tiny arcade near you in June</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 24 Apr 2012 11:57:00 EST. One such project is called NewsFlash, and uses high-frequency red and green light to transmit data to the built-in camera on a receiving device -- in this case <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/16/epic-4g-review/">Samsung's Epic 4G</a>. The concept is certainly familiar, and functions in much the same way as a QR code, generating flashing light that's invisible to the human eye instead of a cumbersome 2D square. In the Media Lab's implementation, an iPad is used to display a static news page with flashing colored bands at the top, representing just a few vertical pixels on the LCD.</p><p> As the device presents the standard touch experience you're already familiar with, it also broadcasts data that can be read by any camera, but flashes too quickly to be distracting or even noticeable to the naked eye. A NewsFlash app then interprets those flashes and displays a webpage as instructed -- either a mobile version with the same content, or a translation of foreign websites. As with most MediaLab projects, NewsFlash is simply a concept at this point, but it could one day make its way to your devices. Jump past the break to see it in action.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/mit-media-lab-newsflash-hands-on/">MIT Media Lab: NewsFlash hands-on</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/mit-media-lab-newsflash-hands-on/#4983304"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/04/zshmitnf001_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/mit-media-lab-newsflash-hands-on/#4983305"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/04/zshmitnf002_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/mit-media-lab-newsflash-hands-on/#4983306"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/04/zshmitnf003_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/mit-media-lab-newsflash-hands-on/#4983307"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/04/zshmitnf004_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/mit-media-lab-newsflash-hands-on/#4983308"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/04/zshmitnf005_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></p><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/24/mit-media-lab-newsflash-hands-on/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>NewsFlash uses high-frequency light to transmit data from iPad to smartphone, we go hands-on (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/24/mit-media-lab-newsflash-hands-on/">NewsFlash uses high-frequency light to transmit data from iPad to smartphone, we go hands-on (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 24 Apr 2012 10:41:00 EST. Now, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/29/microsoft-windows-8-consumer-preview-detailed-impressions/">Windows 8</a> tablet developers -- or anyone, for that matter -- can test their apps and play with the Microsoft's Metro interface from within the confines of Apple's ubiquitous tablet. The functionality is made possible by <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/splashtop">Splashtop</a>, which is known for its remote desktop apps that are currently available for Android and iOS. It seems that a good amount of effort went into this application, known as the Win8 Metro Testbed, which offers the same swipe capabilities that will be available on a native system. This includes the ability to swipe from the left to switch apps, swipe from the right to reveal the Charms menu, and pull down from the top to close an application. Splashtop's Win8 Metro Testbed is currently available for a promotional $24.99 in the iTunes App Store, whereafter it will sell for $49.99. You'll find the full PR and a quick video tour of the app's functionality after the break.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/splashtop-win8-metro-testbed-for-apple-ipad/">Splashtop Win8 Metro Testbed for Apple iPad</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/splashtop-win8-metro-testbed-for-apple-ipad/#4960459"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/04/win8screenshot1-large_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/splashtop-win8-metro-testbed-for-apple-ipad/#4960460"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/04/win8screenshot2-large_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/splashtop-win8-metro-testbed-for-apple-ipad/#4960461"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/04/win8screenshot3-large_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/splashtop-win8-metro-testbed-for-apple-ipad/#4960462"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/04/win8screenshot4-large_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/splashtop-win8-metro-testbed-for-apple-ipad/#4960463"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/04/win8screenshot5-large_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/13/splashtop-brings-windows-8-to-apple-ipad-video/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Splashtop brings Windows 8 Metro Testbed to Apple's iPad (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/13/splashtop-brings-windows-8-to-apple-ipad-video/">Splashtop brings Windows 8 Metro Testbed to Apple's iPad (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 13 Apr 2012 02:07:00 EST. Despite all that, until today's update doing something as doublechecking what was scheduled for recording on your DVR required popping out of the app and signing into a different webpage. The new integrated DVR Manager can be seen above and confirms, yes, that <i>Deadliest Catch</i> is securely in our queue for this evening. We're not sure what's going to happen in the season eight premiere, but we suspect someone is going to worried about whether or not they're catching enough crabs on this trip.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/10/comcast-xfinity-tv-ios-app-adds-integrated-dvr-manager-so-you-do/">Comcast Xfinity TV iOS app adds integrated DVR manager so you don't miss Deadliest Catch</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 10 Apr 2012 20:04:00 EST. Apple is investigating complaints from customers over poor WiFi-connectivity on its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/ipad-2012-review-1/#4901540">new iPad</a>. According to a lengthy forum thread, many users are experiencing connection drops and poor performance. An internal AppleCare document has now leaked to <em>9to5Mac</em>, explaining how Apple is to "capture" and replace 3rd generation tablets that suffer from the intermittent connectivity. The issues appear to affect the WiFi-only model of Apple's latest hardware, with SIM-connected variants apparently safe due to the black antenna panel. Employees are told to test that iPads aren't suffering issues due to software kinks and return wonky units to engineers for testing and a full health check. Check out the leaked internal memo (and compare symptoms) over at the source.</p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/05/new-ipad-wifi-issues/">Apple 'captures' new iPads due to WiFi complaints</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 05 Apr 2012 03:39:00 EST. Version 2.1.1 adds not only high-res artwork but also fixes for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/11/apples-ipod-shuffle-hits-4gb/">VoiceOver</a>, improved playback on external displays and other more minor tweaks. Better yet, for when you're actually watching your movies and old TV shows, the official Twitter account promises HD video streaming is on the way. Not rocking one of the fruit logo-branded tablets yet? You still may notice some changes, as <i>HackingNetflix</i> points out the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/netflix.com">homepage</a> has been revamped once again recently, with a design that feels smoother and faster, featuring a floating red bar that follows as you scroll down. However, as Netflix giveth, Netflix taketh away, and streaming-only customers have lost the ability to even view or rate DVD-only titles in this new version. Take a peek at the latest changes for yourself and let us know in the comments below how they strike you.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/21/netflix-ipad-app-retina-hd-video/">Netflix iPad app upgraded with Retina quality icons and images now, HD video soon</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 21 Mar 2012 19:40:00 EST. On both platforms, the Facebook login has been streamlined, there's To Do List / Season Pass management for Series3 DVRs, ability to create a WishList search and more. The iPad version features a new full-screen Browse UI (shown above) and collapsible folders while the iPhone receives high res retina display quality images. <i>Zatz Not Funny </i>mentions those higher quality pics will come to the iPad as well in the next few weeks, while TiVo's blog post mentions all of these features will arrive in its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/05/tivo-premiere-update-brings-hd-guide-multi-room-streaming-more/">Android app(s)</a> this summer. We say apps plural, because that's including a specialized Tablet version due in the springtime. For now however, the changelogs for the iOS versions are available at the links below.<br /><br /><strong>Update</strong>: Just an FYI, the official TiVo app for Android has also been updated, adding support for more resolutions, an exit button in the menu and unspecified performance and stability fixes.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/20/tivo-iphone-ipad-app-update/">TiVo iOS app updated to v1.9 with a few new features, Android tablet app on the way</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 20 Mar 2012 17:36:00 EST. The company issued a fairly noncommittal response on the matter, stating that in spite of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/16/apple-ipad-review-2012/">the tablet's</a> LTE support, fast processing, battery life and resolutionary display magic, it still "operate[s] well within [Apple's] thermal specifications." That said, if anyone happens to have concern with regards to an overheated lap, "they should contact AppleCare." There may be a chance, after all, that you've been <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/24/apple-responds-over-iphone-4-reception-issues-youre-holding-th/">holding it wrong</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/20/apple-dont-worry-about-hot-ipad-reports-its-cool/">Apple: don't worry about hot iPad reports, it's cool</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 20 Mar 2012 11:45:00 EST. For one, he stated that Apple's pipeline is "<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/19/apple-stock-repurchase-stock-dividend-liveblog/">full of stuff</a>," further impressing upon the masses the message he planted at the tail-end of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/07/apple-ipad-3-liveblog/">new iPad keynote</a> on March 7th. He also stated: "I think our customers will be incredibly pleased with what they see coming out." Hardly a surprise, but Apple rarely hands out confirmation of boom times unless it truly has something significant in the labs.<br /><br />He also confirmed that Apple had "a record opening weekend" in regard to the new iPad <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/16/apple-ipad-review-2012/">launch</a>, but stopped short of handing out actual figures. In fact, we could be talking about a record <i>low</i> -- we jest, we jest. At any rate, AT&amp;T has stepped in to announce that on Friday, March 16th, the carrier "set a new single-day record for its iPad sales and activations." Again, no hard figures, but something tells us the number crunchers (and auditors) are hard at work to bring us precisely that. Ma Bell's laughably brief press release can be found in its entirety after the break -- all 45 cliffhanging words of it.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/19/apple-new-product-pipeline-att-activation-ipad-record/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Apple's Tim Cook says 'pipeline is full of stuff,' AT&amp;T affirms record sales of new iPad</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/19/apple-new-product-pipeline-att-activation-ipad-record/">Apple's Tim Cook says 'pipeline is full of stuff,' AT&amp;T affirms record sales of new iPad</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 19 Mar 2012 11:43:00 EST. Our own Richard Lai slid his 64GB WiFi iPad under a USB scope, going far beyond the naked eye for a close-up look at those gorgeous high-density subpixels. As you can imagine, it's impossible to distinguish one dot from the next when you're looking at a cool three million pixels packed tightly within a 9.7-inch slab, but that view clears up quite nicely under a 230x microscope. What you'll see is that those tiny red, green and blue dots are now significantly smaller, when compared to the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/09/ipad-2-review/">iPad 2</a>. That means text that's easily legible without a pinch, smooth icons and far sharper pictures. There's a dramatic improvement for sure, but is that new display alone enough to justify the upgrade for you? A quick click through the gallery below should help clear things up.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/the-new-ipads-lcd-under-the-microscope/">The new iPad's LCD under the microscope</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/the-new-ipads-lcd-under-the-microscope/#4901568"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/03/new-ipad-230x-gal_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/the-new-ipads-lcd-under-the-microscope/#4901566"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/03/ipad-flower-50x-gal-1331923822_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/the-new-ipads-lcd-under-the-microscope/#4901567"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/03/new-ipad-50x-gal-1331923830_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/the-new-ipads-lcd-under-the-microscope/#4901584"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/03/engadget-ipad-50x-gal_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/the-new-ipads-lcd-under-the-microscope/#4902787"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/03/ipad-3-kanji-gal_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><em>Richard Lai contributed to this report.</em><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/16/apple-ipad-retina-display-microscope/">Under the microscope: a closer look at the new iPad</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 16 Mar 2012 15:31:00 EST. Or, more importantly, what's in a digit? Would that which we call an iPad by any number less than 2 be less sweet? That's the question Apple posed for us indirectly when it <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/07/apple-ipad-3-liveblog/">unveiled the new iPad</a> and relegated its future slates (and, presumably, phones) to a numeral-free future. And that new slate? It's much the same as the old one, with a slightly more chipper processor at its (quad) core and support for both Verizon and AT&amp;T's fancy new LTE networks.<br /><br />But there's one bigger change here, one that will ripple across the industry as each manufacturer struggles to keep up in this ever-accelerating market. That feature is the iPad's new 2048 x 1536 Retina display. It's the best display ever featured on a tablet, probably the best display ever on a mobile device, but is that enough to keep this tablet ahead of the pack? Believe it or not, the answer is yes.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/ipad-2012-review-1/">iPad (2012) review</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/ipad-2012-review-1/#4901538"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/03/ipad01eng-1331923440_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/ipad-2012-review-1/#4901539"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/03/ipad02eng-1331923440_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/ipad-2012-review-1/#4901540"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/03/ipad03eng-1331923440_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/ipad-2012-review-1/#4901541"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/03/ipad04eng-1331923441_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/ipad-2012-review-1/#4901542"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/03/ipad05eng-1331923441_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/16/apple-ipad-review-2012/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>iPad review (2012)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/16/apple-ipad-review-2012/">iPad review (2012)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 16 Mar 2012 15:00:00 EST. Coming just in time for the F1 2012 season, this iteration includes not only live streaming of the four Sky Sports channels and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/28/sky-sports-dedicated-f1-hd-channel-coming-next-season/">Sky Sports F1 HD</a>, but it also has a new F1 Race Control companion feature built-in. During a race, it lets viewers choose from eight different camera feeds with in-car and pit lane views, in-race highlights, live race data like lap times and integrated social media feeds -- while these are just for racing now, according to Sky's blog post, we may see similar ones for other sports soon. Access to the app is included with various Sky TV packages, while those in the UK and Ireland without a TV plan can get access to the app and Sky Sports News channel streaming for &pound;4.99 per month, billed through iTunes. Check it out there for a few more screenshots or to download and get ready for the Australian GP.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/16/sky-sports-for-ipad-2-0-launches-with-live-tv-streaming-f1-race/">Sky Sports for iPad 2.0 launches with live TV streaming, F1 Race Control companion</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 16 Mar 2012 06:08:00 EST. Hong Kong magazine <em>PCM</em> just informed us that it got hold of a 4G flavor of Apple's latest tablet, courtesy of a very mysterious person (especially considering the 4G version isn't yet available in this region). Within the little time it spent with the new iPad, <em>PCM</em> managed to do plenty of comparisons with the tablet's predecessor, particularly with their camera and graphics performance. While pretty much everything's been beefed up, <em>PCM</em> claims that the new lens isn't as wide as before, and it also notes that the extra 50g is pretty noticeable -- obviously we shall see for ourselves on Friday. Hands-on video and sample video clip embedded after the break, and head on over to the source link for more comparison shots.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/14/new-ipad-hong-kong-sample-photos-vi/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Apple's new iPad shows up in Hong Kong, teases with sample photos and video clip</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/14/new-ipad-hong-kong-sample-photos-vi/">Apple's new iPad shows up in Hong Kong, teases with sample photos and video clip</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 14 Mar 2012 14:02:00 EST. As such, it's not surprising to find out that at least one US Best Buy location has already received its stock of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/12/super-high-aperture-new-ipad-retina-display/">Retina display</a>-loaded slates. Thanks to an anonymous tipster, we've received photos showing short-stacks of the pads just waiting to be given new homes. If you'll recall, Apple's online store has already <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/09/apples-new-ipad-ship-date-slips-to-march-19th-in-the-us/">sold out</a> of its arrival day shipment stock for home delivery, with newer orders now set to go out on the 19th. That said, if you haven't reserved one and <em>have to it</em> come March 16th, you'll likely have another option for a retail camping adventure aside from your local <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/13/psa-verizon-and-atandt-ready-to-take-your-money-for-new-ipads-on/">Apple, AT&amp;T and Verizon stores</a>.<br /><br />[Thanks, Anonymous]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/14/new-ipad-inventory-shipments-spotted-at-best-buy-backroom-eye-c/">New iPad inventory shipments spotted at Best Buy, backroom eye-candy until Friday</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 14 Mar 2012 13:22:00 EST. Don't worry, Cupertino let it be known that its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/07/apple-new-ipad-hands-on/">new iPad</a> is on-track for an 8AM debut this Friday. The "resolutionary" (Apple's fault, not ours) tablet will be reaching Apple Stores on March 16th at 8AM local time in ten countries: the US (including Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands), Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, Switzerland and the UK. Here in the States, the iPad will also be hitting a number of retailers, including Best Buy, Radio Shack, Sam's Club, Target and Walmart. The tablet starts at $499, the line starts around the corner and the relevant press info starts after the break.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/14/new-ipad-still-coming-to-apple-stores-at-8am-on-friday-dont-wo/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>New iPad still coming to Apple Stores at 8AM on Friday, don't worry</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/14/new-ipad-still-coming-to-apple-stores-at-8am-on-friday-dont-wo/">New iPad still coming to Apple Stores at 8AM on Friday, don't worry</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 14 Mar 2012 09:16:00 EST. The results confirm that the RAM has been upped to 1GB, with the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/geekbench/">Geekbench</a> score settling at 756. The processor remains at 1GHz, again, which is what we expected, but puts the kibosh on any speculation that there might have been a slight bump in clock speeds. Or did it waft hallucinogens at us while we <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/07/apple-ipad-3-liveblog/">liveblogged</a>, making us see only what we wanted to see? These doubts should be quashed when the third-gen tablet starts reaching consumers who are too populous to drug effectively. Fortunately, that process has already started, with some folks over in Vietnam claiming they've got hold of the retail version of the new iPad and posting evidence to prove it. This past week, one clever individual has repackaged HTC's Beats equalizer for use on any Android smartphone, and we've also come across news of additional language support for Siri that's set to arrive later this year. These stories and more await after the break. So buy the ticket and take the ride as we explore the "<a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/mm">best of the rest</a>" for this week of March 5th, 2012.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/10/mobile-miscellany-week-of-march-5th-2012/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Mobile Miscellany: week of March 5th, 2012</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/10/mobile-miscellany-week-of-march-5th-2012/">Mobile Miscellany: week of March 5th, 2012</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sat, 10 Mar 2012 14:04:00 EST. That's the first shot we've been able to secure using the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/07/apple-new-ipad-hands-on/">new iPad</a> and its "iPhone 4S-esque" sensor. For those unaware, it's rocking a five megapixel sensor and plenty of niceties grabbed from the 4S, and the shot here is entirely unedited in any way. To be honest, it's pretty impressive given the exceptionally challenging lighting situation that we were facing in this here room, with a well-lit backdrop and a poorly lit foreground. Er, new iPad. Breaking away from the numerical tracking system used before (and still used in the iPhone range), Apple has decided to highlight the most major change in its newest slate by simply dubbing it "new." By and large, the new guy is the same as the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/09/ipad-2-review/">old guy</a> (Home button included), but with a few nice amenities that could very well convince OG iPad owners to upgrade. Upon touching the HD variant, it's not the overall form factor that grabs us -- it's the <i>screen</i>. Given that we're unashamed <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/11/paul-miller-pixel-density-enthusiast/">Pixel Density Enthusiasts</a> 'round these parts, seeing a 2,048 x 1,536 resolution display in the same area as the prior 'Pads is stunning. Nearly two months ago to the day, ASUS wowed our entire CES trailer with a reported 1,920 x 1,200 display on the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/09/asus-eee-pad-memo-me171-me370t-and-high-end-transformer-prime-t/">TF700T</a>; <i>this</i>, however, is something that really needs to be ogled to truly appreciate. In fact, the first viewing conjured up familiar feelings -- ones that came to light when placing the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/07/iphone-4-pixel-density-examined-video/">iPhone 4 beside the iPhone 3G</a> for the first time.<br /><br />Unsurprisingly, Apple has managed to produce something that's truly beautiful to look at, and while we've yet to see the full potential of having this many pixels on a 9.7-inch slate, we're guessing a cadre of game developers are already hard at work in order to remedy that. Beyond being dazzling from a density standpoint, colors are sharp and accurate, and viewing angles are predictably ridiculous; even taking a peek from an extreme side angle gives way to a fairly solid image with next to no washout. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-new-ipad-hands-on/">Apple new iPad hands-on!</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-new-ipad-hands-on/#4880871"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/03/d3s1191_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-new-ipad-hands-on/#4880872"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/03/d3s1192_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-new-ipad-hands-on/#4880873"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/03/d3s1193_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-new-ipad-hands-on/#4880874"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/03/d3s1194_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-new-ipad-hands-on/#4880875"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/03/d3s1195_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><br /><em style="color: rgb(68, 68, 68); font-family: georgia; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19px; ">For more coverage of Apple's iPad event, visit <a href="http://www.engadget.com/event/apple-ipad-event-2012" style="outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial; text-decoration: none; color: rgb(0, 189, 246); ">our hub</a>!</em><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/07/apple-new-ipad-hands-on/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Apple new iPad hands-on (update: video!)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/07/apple-new-ipad-hands-on/">Apple new iPad hands-on (update: video!)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 07 Mar 2012 14:33:00 EST. That entry-level price in particular puts it in more direct competition with a slew of mid-range tabs that previously undercut the iPad, including the <a href="http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=2&amp;cts=1331148329695&amp;ved=0CEcQFjAB&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.engadget.com%2F2011%2F11%2F21%2Fsamsung-galaxy-tab-7-0-plus-review%2F&amp;ei=J7ZXT8G-Esfb0QH2yMDDDw&amp;usg=AFQjCNFGS2obMGibAj5o3G63VJYzDr2jvQ">Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus</a> and others. Specifically, though, Tim Cook &amp; Co. hope that lower price will attract not just thrifty consumers, but schools looking to issue iPads in large numbers -- a move that dovetails with the release of <a href="http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=4&amp;cts=1331148479365&amp;ved=0CFgQFjAD&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.engadget.com%2F2012%2F01%2F19%2Fapple-ibooks-textbook-hands-on-video%2F&amp;ei=tbZXT834DfDJ0AHb4J2IBw&amp;usg=AFQjCNHjNmxe33ERL8YPl-V1tfMXJBPK7w">iBooks textbooks</a> and the <a href="http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=2&amp;cts=1331148533633&amp;ved=0CEYQFjAB&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.engadget.com%2F2012%2F01%2F19%2Fapples-ibooks-author-hands-on%2F&amp;ei=tbZXT834DfDJ0AHb4J2IBw&amp;usg=AFQjCNHPgPijMZGcEZa_22yydQ1nX8cxcQ">iBooks Author</a> OS X app earlier this year.<br /> <br /> Though this is the first time the company's offering two iPads at once, this strategy is old hat for Apple, which has <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/04/apple-drops-iphone-prices-8gb-3gs-free-iphone-4-now-99/">long been taking</a> that tack to sell more iPhones. What's notable is that usually the trade-off (aside from year-old specs) has been that users have had to settle for devices with minimal built-in storage, which you naturally can't expand with a memory card, this being an iDevice and all. In this case, though, the iPad 2 will still be offered with 16GB of built-in storage, as opposed to, say, eight gigs. Still, depending on the size of your library, this might be a good time to get acquainted with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/iCloud/">iCloud</a>, if you haven't already.<br /> <br /> <em style="color: rgb(68, 68, 68); font-family: georgia; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19px; ">For more coverage of Apple's iPad event, visit <a href="http://www.engadget.com/event/apple-ipad-event-2012" style="outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial; text-decoration: none; color: rgb(0, 189, 246); ">our hub</a>!</em></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/07/apple-drops-ipad-2-price-to-399/">Apple drops iPad 2 price to $399 for the 16GB WiFi-only model, $529 for the 3G version</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 07 Mar 2012 14:19:00 EST. Hard to say if it's a day that'll live long in terms of historical significance, but you can bet it'll be an important milestone in the history of Apple's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/iPad/">iPad</a> family. The next iPad (iPad 3? iPad HD? iPad 2S?) is due to be unveiled by Tim Cook at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, California, and we'll be here <strong>live</strong> to bring you the goods as they're unwrapped. If you've managed to arrive in this time wrinkle <em>before</em> 03/07/2012, there's still a reliable fabric of reality intact. Just be sure to bookmark this landing page and return at the time listed below, or a few hours early for those interested in seeing Tim and Darren live from the streets of SF.<br /><br /><center> <span id="event-datetime">March 7, 2012 10:00 AM PST</span></center><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/07/apple-ipad-3-liveblog/">Apple next-generation iPad liveblog!</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 07 Mar 2012 12:45:00 EST. In between, of course, you can catch our liveblog from the inside at this link <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/07/apple-ipad-3-liveblog/"><strong>right here</strong></a>, given that video streams <em><u>aren't</u></em> allowed from the inside. Also, SF -- good weather, alright? Alright. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apples-next-gen-ipad-launch-event-at-yerba-buena-center-for-the-arts/">Apple's next-gen iPad launch event at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apples-next-gen-ipad-launch-event-at-yerba-buena-center-for-the-arts/#4875613"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/03/apple-yerba-buena-ipad-3-ipad-hd-event01883_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apples-next-gen-ipad-launch-event-at-yerba-buena-center-for-the-arts/#4875604"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/03/apple-yerba-buena-ipad-3-ipad-hd-event01873_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apples-next-gen-ipad-launch-event-at-yerba-buena-center-for-the-arts/#4875600"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/03/apple-yerba-buena-ipad-3-ipad-hd-event01869_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apples-next-gen-ipad-launch-event-at-yerba-buena-center-for-the-arts/#4875606"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/03/apple-yerba-buena-ipad-3-ipad-hd-event01875_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apples-next-gen-ipad-launch-event-at-yerba-buena-center-for-the-arts/#4875615"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/03/apple-yerba-buena-ipad-3-ipad-hd-event01886_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/06/engadget-broadcasting-live-apple-ipad-3-tomorrow/">Engadget will be broadcasting live outside of Apple's iPad event tomorrow!</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 06 Mar 2012 16:30:00 EST. Of course not -- you canned 'em <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/28/apple-ipad-event-confirmed-for-march-7th-in-san-francisco/">a week ago</a>. For those still unaware, Apple will be unveiling its next iPad at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater in San Francisco tomorrow, and as always, we'll be there live to bring you the news as it happens.
