It's amazing, it's mysterious and it's hard to say exactly what it <em>does</em>. On Friday, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/fcc">FCC</a> passed a device described as "a handset of internet tablet with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/23/archos-trots-out-android-based-dect-home-phone-35-home-connect/">DECT</a>," suggesting that the mystery gadget may be some sort of bizarre marriage between a DECT cordless phone and a tablet. Given the "Smart Home Phone" name on the back of the product, the tablet functionality could be used to view contacts and caller data. We'll report additional details as they become available, but until then, the person with the best guess as to what this thing actually does gets the peace of mind of a job well done.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/26/fcc-approves-mysterious-archos-dect-device-may-or-may-not-be-se/">FCC approves mysterious Archos DECT device, may or may not be secret death ray</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 26 Dec 2011 03:01:00 EST. Because good things come in pairs, yet another <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/archos/">Archos</a> tablet has popped up over at the FCC <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/11/archos-sends-the-a70s2-tablet-through-the-fcc-tells-us-nothing/">shrouded in <em>myst&egrave;re</em></a>. Aside from the tab's name, the A80S, and its <em>de rigeur</em> WiFi b / g / n capabilities, not much else can be glimpsed from the product's filings. If the French company's recently unveiled <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/23/archos-intros-80-gb-and-101-g9-android-3-1-tablets-1-5ghz-cpu/">80 G9 and 101 G9</a> offerings are any indication, we could be looking at a dual-core processor setup and some version of Android -- potentially even Ice Cream Sandwich. We'll keep an eye out for any further spec-related developments, but until then, you can satisfy your Archos sweet tooth with this <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/11/archos-arnova-7-g2-and-10-g2-tablets-launch-in-hong-kong-taste/">Gingerbread duo</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/18/archos-a80s-shows-up-at-the-fcc-keeps-its-specs-hidden/">Archos A80S shows up at the FCC, keeps its specs hidden</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 18 Aug 2011 17:57:00 EST. You'd think after unveiling <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/23/archos-intros-80-gb-and-101-g9-android-3-1-tablets-1-5ghz-cpu/">a duo</a> of Android 3.1 slates along with a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/22/archos-unveils-bare-bones-arnova-7-android-tablet-priced-at-99/">bare-bones model</a> Archos would have washed its hands of tablets for at least a couple months, right? Of course not -- the French company that just won't quit has sent yet another tab through the FCC, this one dubbed the A70S2. And that's about all the outfit let slip on the subject -- at least until August 19th when the confidentiality protection covering the tablet's juiciest details expires. The company wouldn't throw us a screen size, resolution, or even a confirmation that yes, this thing might well run Android like the bulk of Archos' other tablets. So if this game of "what the heck is this?" doesn't bear fruit, let's take the opportunity to have a (one-sided) heart-to-heart with our favorite French tablet maker. Archos, isn't it about time you added an easy-to-hold, 7-incher with Android 3.1, 250GB of storage, and HDMI-out to the mix? We think it'd fit in <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/23/archos-intros-80-gb-and-101-g9-android-3-1-tablets-1-5ghz-cpu/">perfectly</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/11/archos-sends-the-a70s2-tablet-through-the-fcc-tells-us-nothing/">Archos sends the A70S2 tablet through the FCC, tells us nothing in the process</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 11 Jul 2011 09:09:00 EST. Okay, maybe not <em>everybody</em>, but the vast majority of the Android offerings from Archos are receiving some guilt-free sweet treats. Models <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/archos,23">23</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/archos,32">32</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/archos,43">43</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/archos,70">70</a>, and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/archos,101">101</a> (you know, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/31/archos-unleashes-five-five-new-android-froyo-tablets-we-go-h/">these guys</a>) are all on the lucky receiving end of firmware updates that bring <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/android,2.2">Android 2.2.1</a> to the table. That comes with improved performance, better battery life estimation, and support for external GPS adapters. All yours for the low, low price of free -- well, assuming you've already bought the tablet, of course.<br />

<br />
It was just last week the Android-powered Archos 32 <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/04/android-based-archos-32-media-player-now-available-for-pre-order/">spontaneously burst into existence</a> with a premature sale, and thanks to the FCC we can say today that we also know what it looks like. As you can see in the picture above, the "minidroid" appears to be a completely capacitive affair, with dedicated buttons and directional controls surrounding that 3.2-inch screen. The full filing also reveals built-in GPS, a 3.5mm headphone jack and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/archos-7-home-tablet-review">Archos' trademark kickstand</a> alongside Bluetooth and WiFi. While it does have a microphone as originally reported, there's strangely no mention of a camera in the user's manual, which actually suggests that circle on the back of the device may be the integrated speaker. (Here's hoping we're proven wrong.) On the connectivity front, ARCHOS seems to have the usual host of accessories planned including a 720p-capable DVR dock, but frustratingly the unit also requires a proprietary connector to transfer data and charge. Should the original leak be accurate, expect to see this one at e-tailers in the coming months for a penny under $150, an excellent price should the build quality equal the company's codec support. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/archos-32-internet-tablet-first-pics/">Archos 32 Internet Tablet first pics</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/archos-32-internet-tablet-first-pics/#3250056"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/08/8-10-10-archosfccsketch1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/archos-32-internet-tablet-first-pics/#3250049"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/08/8-10-10-archosfcc1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/archos-32-internet-tablet-first-pics/#3250050"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/08/8-10-10-archosfcc2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/archos-32-internet-tablet-first-pics/#3250051"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/08/8-10-10-archosfcc3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/archos-32-internet-tablet-first-pics/#3250052"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/08/8-10-10-archosfcc4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/11/archos-32-internet-tablet-hits-the-fcc-pictures-and-manual-in-t/">Archos 32 Internet "Tablet" hits the FCC, pictures and manual in tow</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 11 Aug 2010 06:12:00 EST. If you're suffering from Goldilocks Syndrome, unable to find the perfect portable device, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/archos">Archos</a> is releasing a suite of suite of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/internettablet">Internet Tablets</a> this summer and surely one of them will be <em>just right</em> for your choosy tastes. The company looks poised to launch six of the things according to a slide that slipped out from a presentation given by Archos CEO Henri Crohas. The slide (above) shows a mockup image of six separate tablets, which are said to range in price from $100 to $350 with processors ranging from 800MHz up to 1GHz and screens from 3- to 10-inches. Archos has just announced its brand new 7- and 8-inch <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/19/archos-said-to-have-two-new-android-tablets-on-track-for-cebit/">Home Tablets</a>, which both run Android and cost &euro;149 ($203). For that layout, you'll get a 600MHz ARM 9 processor, which won't be breaking any (positive) records, but the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/01/archos-home-slate-set-to-grace-cebit-with-its-family-friendly-pr/">Archos 7</a> you see above is a very svelte 12mm thin and weighs only 350g, making it an ideal web reading device if not a particularly potent multimedia consumer. You also get WiFi, 2GB of integrated memory on the cheaper versions and a battery that will last for seven hours of video or 44 hours of audio playback. The Archos 8 (pictured after the break) comes with a huge old bezel, hinting at its ability to double up as a picture frame, while sharing the 7's other features, including price and thickness. The smaller device will be coming out in Europe this April, to be followed by its larger sibling in May.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/01/archos-7-and-8-home-tablets-are-cheap-but-you-get-what-you-pay/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Archos 7 and 8 Home Tablets are cheap, but you get what you pay for</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/01/archos-7-and-8-home-tablets-are-cheap-but-you-get-what-you-pay/">Archos 7 and 8 Home Tablets are cheap, but you get what you pay for</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 01 Mar 2010 06:52:00 EST. <div style="text-align: left;">Archos disappointed quite a few users <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/12/28/archos-5-says-hello-goodbye-to-android-1-6/">last month</a> by pushing out an Android 1.6 (a.k.a. "Donut") update for its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/archos5">Archos 5</a> internet tablet only to yank it shortly thereafter due to a "last-minute major issue," but it now looks like it's finally set things right -- the update is once again available for download, and it apparently works just fine this time. Among other things, the update optimizes applications for the Archos 5's high resolution screen, and adds features like Quick Search to help you find music, contacts and other information more easily. Hit up the link below for all the necessary upgrade details.<br />

It would seem somebody over at Archos HQ was sipping a little too much of the Chardonnay over the holidays, as the company's latest firmware update for the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/archos5">5-inch Internet Tablet</a> has suffered something of a false start. Intended to bring the onboard <a href="http://www.engadget.com/product/android">Android</a> up to the civilized ways of version 1.6 and to fix a few outstanding bugs, the update has been yanked due to the above "last-minute major issue." Mind you, when the non-toxic version does hit, you should still be wary -- it appears the latest firmware disables the hack that allowed users to re-install some Google apps <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/12/archos-5-has-99-problems-and-a-glitch-is-one-160gb-version-pull/">missing</a> from the default software on the device. Ah well, a shambling but <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/16/archos-5-firmware-1-1-01-rights-all-wrongs/">active</a> updating regimen is better than none at all.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/12/28/archos-5-says-hello-goodbye-to-android-1-6/">Archos 5 says hello, goodbye to Android 1.6</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 28 Dec 2009 05:37:00 EST. A few days ago in a land a few time zones away, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/crunchpad">one tablet</a> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/12/07/fusion-garage-joojoo-tablet-rises-from-the-ashes-of-the-crunchpa/">became another</a> and, just for a moment, stopped everyone speculating about <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/apple,tablet">Apple's entry</a> into the decidedly fledgling market segment. According to <em>Pocket-lint</em> Dell is similarly jumping aboard, said to be set to unveil a five-inch tablet running <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/android">Android</a>, specs that would put it right up in the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/archos,InternetTablet/">Archos Internet Tablet's</a> grill and, thankfully, should mean a much lower price-point than the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/joojoo">Joojoo</a>. Word is we'll all be getting a glimpse of the thing at CES next month, and knowing Dell it'll probably be <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/07/dell-announces-updated-adamo/">a very fleeting one</a>. We're guessing this is the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/streak">Streak</a>, but would love to be surprised by something entirely new.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/12/10/tablet-wars-episode-v-dell-strikes-back-at-ces/">Tablet Wars: Episode V - Dell Strikes Back at CES?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 10 Dec 2009 06:29:00 EST. The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/15/archos-5-internet-tablet-makes-an-honest-pmp-out-of-android/">Archos 5 Internet Tablet</a> hasn't had the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/12/archos-5-has-99-problems-and-a-glitch-is-one-160gb-version-pull/">smoothest ride</a> into the commercial realm, but thanks to a few <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/16/archos-5-firmware-1-1-01-rights-all-wrongs/">firmware updates</a>, the Android-based player seems to finally be humming along just fine. That said, not everyone's interested in shelling out big bucks for a capacious version, which makes the latest edition perfect for those simply curious to see how Google's mobile OS fares on a portable media player. The 8GB model has surfaced over at Radio Shack, bringing with it all the goods on the larger siblings but with far less internal space. The best part? That $249.99 price tag (and that little "In Stock" icon beside it).<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/12/08/android-based-archos-5-internet-tablet-surfaces-in-8gb-form-for/">Android-based Archos 5 Internet Tablet surfaces in 8GB form for $250</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 08 Dec 2009 10:28:00 EST. Charbax of <em>ArchosFans.com</em> reports that the majority of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/12/archos-5-has-99-problems-and-a-glitch-is-one-160gb-version-pull/">issues encountered</a> by early adopters of the Android-equipped Archos 5 Internet Tablet (not to be confused with the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/15/new-archos-5-with-android-unboxed-meets-its-chubby-predecessor/">older Internet Media Tablet</a>, ugh) have been remedied by the caped crusader that is firmware revision 1.1.01. Forum members do seem to corroborate that the previously habitual lockups are no more, but the complex update procedure has already (probably temporarily) bricked one user's device, while another still has random disconnects when transferring files from his PC under the new firmware. Still, if you've been among the unfortunate victims of the sloppy original software, this is a ray of light for you, and the read link -- featuring input from a source within Archos -- should be considered required reading.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handhelds/" rel="tag">Handhelds</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/portableaudio/" rel="tag">Portable Audio</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/portablevideo/" rel="tag">Portable Video</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/16/archos-5-firmware-1-1-01-rights-all-wrongs/">Archos 5 firmware 1.1.01 rights all wrongs?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 16 Oct 2009 04:51:00 EST. It was <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/08/archos5-android-pmp-now-on-sale-at-amazon/">only just</a> allowed out to play, but Archos' five-inch, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/15/archos-5-internet-tablet-makes-an-honest-pmp-out-of-android/">Android-sporting internet tablet</a> has been called back in by its fastidious mother, a role played by Amazon in this case. Only the hard drive-based 160GB model is affected at present, with the 32GB version selling as normal and the half terabyte option out of stock already. Charbax of <span style="font-style: italic;">ArchosFans.com</span>, a man in the know on this subject, has suggested this might have been caused by a firmware update wiping out some pre-installed Android apps, which is now being addressed. His site's forums and Amazon customer reviews, however, paint a different picture: there are consistent complaints about bugs and lock ups -- software issues that could well affect the other models in the line -- with some going so far as to suggest Archos has used its customers as Beta testers. There doesn't appear to be anything structurally wrong with the device, meaning a robust firmware update could remedy all ills, so now it's just a matter of waiting for Archos to do what it should have done before release.<br /> <br /> [Via <a href="http://www.pocketables.net/2009/10/archos-5-internet-tablet-with-android-pulled-by-amazon-for-problems.html">Pocketables</a>]<br /> <br /> <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Archos-250-Internet-Media-Tablet/dp/B001D0E4DA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=electronics&amp;qid=1255328816&amp;sr=8-1">Read</a> - Amazon product page<br /> <a href="http://forum.archosfans.com/viewtopic.php?f=47&amp;t=26368">Read</a> - Archos Fans forums<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handhelds/" rel="tag">Handhelds</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/portableaudio/" rel="tag">Portable Audio</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/portablevideo/" rel="tag">Portable Video</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/12/archos-5-has-99-problems-and-a-glitch-is-one-160gb-version-pull/">Archos 5 has 99 problems and a glitch is one, 160GB version pulled by Amazon</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 12 Oct 2009 04:05:00 EST. Here we go again... it's Tuesday and the store's been taken off-line as <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/archos,android">rumors of a new touch-screen tablet</a> flood our tips box. That can mean only one thing: a new <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/19/archos-5-internet-tablet-running-android-press-event/">Android tablet</a> from Archos. We still gotta wait <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/19/archos-5-internet-tablet-running-android-press-event/ ">until September 15th</a> for the whole scoop, but <i>B&amp;H</i> has gone ahead and spoiled some of the mystery of Archos' Android-based <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Archos5/">Archos 5</a>, giving the internet tablet its own listing in a number of different storage capacity options, pictures in tow, as well as a $130 DVR station. Prices are currently listed as TBA, but fortunately it looks like the fine fellows at <i>ArchosFans</i> managed to capture the page when there were more concrete dollar signs on each model, to the tune of $294 for 16GB SSD, $370 for 32GB SSD, $320 for 160GB HDD, and $420 for a 500GB HDD. In the DVR station pic we spotted "HD" listed in the video names, which gives us hope that even more of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/09/archos-to-release-android-phone-tablet/">those February leaks</a> are coming to fruition. Screenshot of the with-price listings after the break.<br />

See that? It's an Android-green invitation to the unveil of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/archos%2Candroid">5-inch Archos Internet Media Tablet</a>. The September 15th date isn't new (it was <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/11/archos-announces-archos9-windows-7-tablet/">announced back in June</a>) but it's still good to see things moving ahead as planned. To whet the appetites of would-be developers, Archos has also announced its AppsLib application store for "advanced Android devices." The development guidelines, however, describe just a single, 5-inch 800x480 pixel device with accelerometer, OpenGL 3D graphics support, and HDMI output pushing an oddball 1160x652 pixel resolution to your TV. Right, specs already rumored for the Archos tablet. While not mentioned, we still expect all the other details -- 500GB storage, 10-mm thickness, 7-hours of battery when playing video, voice and HSUPA data radio, and OMAP3440 processor -- unexpectedly announced (by TI!) for the tablet way <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/09/archos-to-release-android-phone-tablet/">back in February</a> to be in place when this thing gets live in Paris next month.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.pocketables.net/2009/08/archos-confirms-sept-15th-android-event-readies-appslib-app-store.html">Pocketables</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handhelds/" rel="tag">Handhelds</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/tabletpcs/" rel="tag">Tablet PCs</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/19/archos-5-internet-tablet-running-android-press-event/">Android-based Archos 5-inch Internet Tablet coming September 15 with (you guessed it) an AppsLib store</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 19 Aug 2009 07:47:00 EST. This one is just looking hotter every minute. According to a product page at Beach Audio which has seemingly jumped the gun -- though by how much is unclear, still no release date -- the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/02/07/archos-705-mobile-dvr-with-wifi-unveiled-thanks-fcc/">704 Mobile DVR</a> from <a href="http://engadget.com/tag/Archos">Archos</a> has a 7-inch 800 x 480 touchscreen, sufficient for playing DVDs at full resolution. There's also an 80GB HDD, and the ability to stream video straight from your PC over WiFi. The wording is a bit unclear, but it sounds like the DVR functionality comes from a USB add-on accessory or dock. Beach Audio is quoting a rather odd $527.99 price for the unit, and we're still unclear on a few things, but what we are pretty sure of is that the 704 is going to be a major contender for your internet tablet / portable video dollar.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.generationmp3.com/index.php/2007/02/12/5452-des-infos-supplementaires-sur-larchos-704">Generation MP3</a> and <a href="http://www.archoslounge.net/Le-704-Wi-Fi-deja-en-vente.html">ArchosLounge</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handhelds/" rel="tag">Handhelds</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/portableaudio/" rel="tag">Portable Audio</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/portablevideo/" rel="tag">Portable Video</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/wireless/" rel="tag">Wireless</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/02/12/more-archos-704-specs-spilled/">More Archos 704 specs spilled</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 12 Feb 2007 11:17:00 EST.
