If you're the type to stock your walls with Lord of the Rings-style elvish daggers (or, you know, build full-scale Portal gun replicas), then you'll love this official Mass Effect 3 mockup commissioned by the folks at Bioware. Arduously crafted by self-proclaimed graphic design dork Harrison Krix, the N7 assault rifle replica made its facsimile debut at this year's San Diego Comic-Con. With only a fortnight to work with, the DIY, prop-making hobbyist took the made-for-cosplay gun from a glued wood, styrene and PVC-detailed master concept to paint weathered, final collector's edition mold. It's an impressive feat you can view in heavily photographed detail at the source, but there's still one thing we're waiting on Krix to bring to life -- that space-skipping SSV Normandy.

  • The Daily Grind: What's your preferred weapon type?

Until the day that we can conquer our virtual enemies with hugging and snuggling, it will always be necessary to arm ourselves for battle with the gruesome tools of the trade. MMOs typically start you out on your career with rusty butter knives and wiffle bats, but before long you have the choice of thousands of types and varieties of weapons. So what's your preferred weapon to kill those 10 rats? Do you like doing your damage up close with dual daggers? Perhaps it's a hefty sword that commands respect as you lop off heads. Or do you spend your time turning living objects into pincushions with your lightning-fast bow and arrow? Maybe your tastes run to the more exotic? Myself, I'm partial to either quarterstaffs (level softly and carry a big stick, is what I say) and any fully automatic assault rifle that I can get my hands on. I know some players who just can't stand to play any class that can't use a big honking two-handed sword. What about you?

FPS games just aren't realistic enough. Thankfully, CTA Digital -- maker of fine products, like the Wii football accessory -- have come up with a rather elegant solution: a replica plastic rifle, with a trigger and built-in speaker to support the controller's three sound effects!

CTA may be best known for its endless array of kid-friendly Wii accessories, but it's not forgetting about the grown-up gamers out there -- or, at least, grown-ups who enjoy shooting plastic guns in their living rooms. Its latest product is the $65 Assault Rifle for the PlayStation 3, which promises to add a whole new degree of "realism and excitement" to games like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 -- oh, and it also makes sound effects even when you're not playing a game. Head on past the break for the video.

  • Fan totally Nerfs the Halo assault rifle

The Halo assault rifle has had a difficult time earning respect. It was totally outshined by the pistol in Halo: CE, ditched entirely for Halo 2 and brought back again in Halo 3 -- only to lose the spotlight to the battle rifle. Now, thanks to a creative Halo fan, the assault rifle has been brought to life ... and completely nerfed. (Like, it's actually a Nerf gun -- get it?) Taking a stock Nerf rifle and an "infamous knock off dollar store assault rifle," a modder known as Moz cobbled together this Halo assault rifle, adding custom pieces and paint. The best part: It actually works; albeit with a slightly lower rate of fire than an actual assault rifle. See it in action after the break. [Via Kotaku]

In an obvious attempt to seduce impressionable teenage gamers into their armed forces the Republic of Korea will begin development of their own totally badass science fiction battle uniform early next year. In addition to a whopping 95% increase in awesomeness, the uniforms will feature a number of other technical enhancements, including a multifunction helmet with video transmitter, GPS display and voice recognition, a backpack with command / control and friendly-or-foe identification systems, a BDU that offers protection from nuclear, biological and chemical attacks, and the laser-guided, multi-function XK11 assault rifle, which shoots both standard NATO 5.56mm rounds and 20mm grenades. Did the future just get way cooler, or way scarier? Or both? We're not sure. But you can check that gun out yourself in the video after the break.

  • Hello Kitty AR-15 assault rifle makes you wish it was Photoshopped

If the Disintegrator had you quivering in your combat boots, we'd recommend grabbing a bullet proof vest and having a seat for this one. Apparently, a fellow in California has dressed up a (legal) AR-15 assault rifle in Hello Kitty fashion for his better half, and while it'd be way too easy to pass this off as a fantastic Photoshop job, the pictures awaiting you in the read link definitely prove otherwise. Cute never looked so evil. [Via CNET]

A while back we told you about one bad mother of a fan made Halo assault rifle replica. Today, we're telling you that you can bring her home for only a few hundred dollars. Over on eBay that same assault rifle is up for auction and is currently sitting at $227 with roughly eight days left and the reserve still not met. From what we remember, a whole lot of work went into creating this bad boy, so maybe hundreds of dollars is justifiable. Actually, if you already decided to purchase the Halo 3 Legendary Edition what's another $500 to fully experience Halo 3? Really ...?[Thanks, B TIzo]

Cheap plastic Halo laser toys just don't cut it for you? Do you have a more refined taste for video game replica weapons and demand a real man's Halo piece, all metal, and life size? Then you have to check out link4044's custom made Halo 3 MA5C assault rifle. It's still a work in progress, but he has been working on it since December. Using Corel Draw, having the blueprints laser cut, putting it back together, and giving it some sanding love makes this assault rifle quite the pretty replica. He's even putting an electronic bullet counter in it too! Job well done link4044, but we just want to know where we can preorder something like that.[Via Digg]

  • Bungie profiles Halo 3's MA5C Assault Rifle

In similar fashion to its recent Mongoose profile, Bungie turns the spotlight on Halo 3's MA5C Assault Rifle. Notable differences between the new weapon and Halo: Combat Evolved's MA5B include: Heavier barrel with a 1 in 7 twist Redesigned cowling to house the electronics suite that reduces weight and increases pointability of weapon Redesigned handguard which is sturdier and provides a more positive grip Simply put, the MA5C has greater range and is capable of dealing more damage than its predecessor. Bungie explains that the MA5C's performance is somewhere between the MA5B's and the BR55 Battle Rifle's. Like the BR55, a MA5C clip magazine holds only 32 rounds. As such, pulsing the trigger -- firing bullets in short bursts -- is the recommended strategy for dispersing targets.
