You've probably already read about the 5.9 magnitude earthquake that affected the Eastern Seaboard of the United States, and now we're hearing reports that the quake brought down some landline and cell phone service in New York, along with other cities on the East Coast. We've been unable to place calls in New York City using AT&T and Sprint smartphones, as well as office landlines. Are you experiencing issues as well? Let us know in the comments.

Update: Service seems to have been restored in New York City.

Update 2: Verizon Wireless has released the following statement on Twitter: "Seeing no reports of damage to our wireless network. There was some network congestion in the East after tremors. Continuing to monitor."

Update 3: T-Mobile was feeling left out and sent us an email: "T-Mobile's network is experiencing higher call volumes in all areas and counties affected by the earthquake. If customers are experiencing temporary difficultly placing calls due to network congestion, we advise them to use SMS or E-Mail until call volumes return to normal."
East Coast earthquake brings down cell phone, landline service (update: restored) originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 23 Aug 2011 14:15:00 EST. We've been inundated with a flood of tips from Big Applers this morning, and we just confirmed ourselves -- a large sect of AT&T users in New York City aren't receiving calls. Even the ones who aren't just holding it wrong. It seems as if outgoing calls operate just fine, but folks trying to dial in are greeted with eternal ringing. As in, it doesn't even go to voicemail. We're assuming the engineers at Ma Bell are all over this as we speak, but be sure to let us know how wrecked your Big City life is due to this in comments below.

Update: Right on cue, AT&T pinged us to say everything should be back to normal. The formal quote is below: "Wireless voice service has been restored and is back to normal now after a software issue occurred during routine maintenance which caused some customers on Long Island and in parts of Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan to experience voice service disruptions this morning. We apologize for any inconvenience to our customers."
Last time, the problems seemed limited to Florida, but now we're hearing that customers spanning from Atlanta to Louisiana are having trouble -- and even Puerto Rico has apparently been pulled into the mess. What's everyone seeing out there?
Update: Everything should've been back online as of roughly midnight ET last night. Here's the statement we've received from AT&T:

"Due to an earlier equipment issue caused by a fiber cut, some customers in the Southeast region experienced issues with their 3G data service. AT&T technicians quickly worked to resolve the issue, and all service should be up and running. We apologize for any inconvenience to our customers."

AT&T data down across the Southeast, Puerto Rico? Here's the official statement we have from the company:

"Some AT&T 3G wireless customers in the panhandle, Jacksonville and Gainesville are unable to use data on their devices, but still have voice capabilities. Our techs are working to fix the problem and get to the root cause."

Is anyone out there having trouble?
Update: Our own Ben Drawbaugh says that he's been having intermittent trouble in Tampa since he first tried around 9AM ET, which is decidedly outside the "panhandle, Jacksonville and Gainesville" area that AT&T is quoting. Anyone else outside those areas having issues?
AT&T having data trouble in parts of Florida originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 09 Jun 2010 12:46:00 EST. Our own personal experiences confirm the data, although text messages are sending and receiving just fine. According to a tweet found by TechCrunch, customer service is saying it'll take anywhere from 24 to 48 hours to fix -- sounds pretty extreme to us, and unfortunately we can't get ahold of anyone to corroborate. Let's put it to you, Bay Area readers, how's that iPhone working for ya?

Update: Just got a statement from AT&T. "We are seeing a hardware issue in downtown San Francisco that is causing some degradation in service. GSM and EDGE voice and data services are still accessible. Our experts are aware and working to resolve as quickly as possible. Further resolution is expected this evening." We tried it ourselves and, yep, if you turn off 3G capabilities on your phone (if possible), data will work just fine.
Yeah, probably.

Read - iPhone Jailbreaking Could Crash Cellphone Towers, Apple Claims
Read - Anyone Experience the AT&T Outage?

Apple: Jailbreaking encourages cell tower terrorism, "catastrophic results" originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 29 Jul 2009 12:37:00 EST. Both EDGE and 3G are pretty spotty for us at the moment in Illinois, but they're working in NYC, which jibes with reports of a Midwest-specific outage, but we're also hearing there are troubles nationwide. We've pinged AT&T for an official statement, but in the meantime let us know if things are working for you wherever you are.

Update: Still haven't heard from AT&T, but we just rolled back into Chicago at 5PM CST and we can't connect on either EDGE or 3G. Let's hope things get better, and soon.

Update 2: According to AT&T, a power failure in Bloomfield, Michigan is the culprit, and techs are working around the clock to get everything back up in the Midwest. We're told rebooting phones may help -- it didn't do anything for us, but it might be worth a shot.

Update 3: It's back up, at least in Chicago. How'd everyone spend their day off-grid? We mostly threw the sad face at our NO SERVICE display.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Is AT&T down for you? originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 28 Dec 2008 15:17:00 EST. AT&T's wireless data service seems to be down in a major way, at least on the eastern half of the country. We're seeing problems with both Edge and 3G from places such as Boston, New York and St. Louis. Interestingly, the actual culprit still seems somewhat veiled in secrecy, as we're only informed that "a particular set of conditions made the Duke wireless network experience some minor and temporary disruptions in service," but never do they exaggerate on exactly what caused the hiccups. Still, Duke also stated that it worked in conjunction with Cisco and Apple in order to "identify the network issue that was causing the problem," and since Cisco stepped in and provided a fix, the prpblem has yet to repeat itself. Looks like you're off the hook on this one, iPhone.
Filed under: Handsets, ATT, Studies, Misc, Apple, iPhone OS

Duke exonerates iPhone from network outage charges originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 21 Jul 2007 13:30:00 EST. Reportedly, so many Dukies have snatched up iPhones and began using the campus WiFi network to surf on the go that the hordes of requests have been "temporarily knocking out anywhere from a dozen to 30 wireless access points at a time." Cisco, the university's main WLAN provider, has been called in to find out exactly why the overload has brought the network to its proverbial knees, and we'd say they better resolve the problem pronto -- after all, this issue could be magnified immensely with the commencement of the fall semester.

[Via Fox News]
Filed under: Handsets, ATT, GSM, GPRS, EDGE, Apple, iPhone OS

iPhones bogging down Duke University's WiFi network? originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 17 Jul 2007 09:58:00 EST.
