Epic Games will add another award to its trophy cabinet next month, when it picks up a BAFTA Special Award for its contribution to game development. Not only has the company created several hits of its own, including the all-conquering Fortnite, but it's helped other studios build games using Unreal Engine and distributed them through the Epic Games Store.

Netflix had its best year ever at the UK's Oscars last night. The streaming service's hot favourite Roma took home four BAFTAs, out of seven nominations, including Best Picture. Netflix's only other candidate, the Coen Brothers' western The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, lost out to British comedy The Favourite in the costume design category. Until yesterday, the platform had only scooped a single film BAFTA back in 2016 when Ava DuVernay's 13th won Best Documentary.

As the dust settles on the Golden Globes, streaming services are already gearing up for their best showing ever at the BAFTAs -- aka the UK's Oscars. Netflix is up for eight awards (up from three last year), mainly thanks to Alfonso Cuarón's deeply personal Mexican drama, Roma, which already snagged the Best Foreign Language Film gong at the Globes and is nominated in the BAFTA Best Film category.

Britain's Academy of Film and Television Arts held its annual celebration of the small screen, and Netflix was expected to win big. The streaming service was in line for six awards, with The Crown and Black Mirror both being nominated for three each. Unfortunately, it wasn't to be, and only one of the sextet won a gong on the night: The Crown's Vanessa Kirby, who won best supporting actress.

‘The Loss Levels’ is a game about shock, grief and powerlessness

The Loss Levels isn't beautiful or challenging, competitive or replayable. It isn't even fun... But where other games inject you into an entirely fictional world, The Loss Levels plants you firmly in this one. Specifically, it puts the player in the aftermath of the Manchester Arena bombing last year, and tells the personal story of developer Dan Hett, who lost his brother in the terror attack that claimed 23 lives, including that of the bomber.

The nominations for the BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) Awards are out, and like last year, Netflix has scored six nominations. Three are for The Crown, which received nominations for best drama, Claire Foy as best lead actress and Vanessa Kirby as best supporting actress. Black Mirror, which was originally a British show that Netflix purchased the rights for, also received three nominations. These were for best lead actor, Joe Cole in "Hang the DJ"; best supporting actor, Jimmi Simpson in "USS Callister" and best single drama.

Set in the 1980s, the game features an immigration inspector based in a communist country who's tasked with sorting through entry documents of those looking to immigrate to the country. As you try to decide who is sincere and who might be a spy or a criminal, the job forces you to work ever faster in order to earn enough money to support your family. What should have been a night to remember became one to forget for Netflix yesterday. The company started the BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) TV awards with six nominations — five for The Crown and one for Stranger Things — but walked away with nothing. Amazon and Transparent had a similarly poor evening, losing to The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story in the international category.

'The Crown' gives Netflix its best shot yet at a TV BAFTA

Despite producing a long list of critically-acclaimed TV shows, Netflix's original programming has yet to be rewarded by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA). The streaming giant has received Academy nominations in the past and recently scooped a BAFTA film award for Ava DuVernay's prison documentary 13th, but so far a British TV accolade has proved elusive. Next month, however, Netflix will travel to Royal Festival Hall full of hope, because today it found out that The Crown is dominating this year's list with five nominations.

The annual BAFTA game awards were held at London's Tobacco Dock last night, celebrating the best software and creative, talented individuals from 2016. Playdead's quiet, thought-provoking Inside was easily the most successful, picking up the awards for artistic achievement, game design, narrative and original property. Fellow indie Firewatch took home best debut game, while Virginia was recognised for its music and That Dragon, Cancer won the game innovation category. Four-player frenzy Overcooked also had a good evening, winning the best family and British game awards.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) is a big Naughty Dog fan, apparently. It announced the nominees for this year's video game awards, and Uncharted 4 leads the way with eight nominations, including Best Game, Music and Narrative. The AAA blockbuster makes up half the total nominations in the Performer category alone, with Nolan North (Nathan Drake), Troy Baker (Sam Drake) and Emily Rose (Elena Fisher) all receiving nods.

Amazon and Netflix win their first BAFTA film awards

Last October, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) announced that streaming-only titles would be considered for the first time at the 2017 film awards. A wise decision, it seems, because both Netflix and Amazon scooped up accolades last night. Netflix won the best documentary category with Ava DuVernay's 13th, a piece investigating race in the US criminal justice system. Amazon, meanwhile, won big with Manchester by the Sea, picking up two awards for best original screenplay and best leading actor. The film has been shown in theaters, however, so it's possible it would have been nominated regardless of the rule change.

BAFTA opens film awards up to streaming-only releases

The Golden Globes, Emmys and BAFTA TV awards have long accepted streaming-only releases for consideration, while rules for the top film accolades haven't changed. Both the Oscars and BAFTA film awards have traditionally only been open to titles that've seen a theatrical release, however small, but the British Academy has now decided to scrap that requirement. Given the rise in new ways for filmmakers to release their work to audiences, from 2017 the BAFTA film awards will accept movies released exclusively on video-on-demand platforms for consideration.

Amazon wins its first BAFTA with 'Transparent'

Amazon doesn't have the volume or breadth of exclusives to compete with Netflix, but it does have a few standout originals that are slowly winning mind share for Prime Video. At the BAFTA TV awards last night, for instance, the company took home the International category for Transparent. The show beat out Narcos, the drug-fuelled crime drama from Netflix, as well as Spiral and The Good Wife. Netflix had also been nominated in the Radio Times Audience Award for its documentary series Making a Murderer, but lost out to the BBC period drama Poldark.

Question: When is an April Fool's prank not an April Fool's prank? Answer: When the prank happens three days late and isn't intentional. In other words, when the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA), which is responsible for the BAFTA Awards, accidentally sends a nomination slip intended for Turn 10, developers of Forza Motorsport 5, to Codemasters, developers of the GRID and F1 series. Whoops. Codemasters took the mix-up in stride, tweeting at Turn 10 to let them know where their paper was, followed by playfully ransoming it off. Turn 10 noted that April 7 is National Beer Day in the US, and asked if a pint would cover the cost. Codemasters pointed out that they've already got quite the nice pub, and that's when things started to get a little ... silly. Read on for images and more tweets from the playful exchange.

Welcome to Joystiq Weekly, a "too long; didn't read" of each week's biggest stories, reviews and original content. Each category's top story is introduced with a reactionary gif, because moving pictures aren't just for The Daily Prophet. Titanfall is one of those games that's fun even if you're not playing it. Watching a group of friends suffer the fallout from a crumbling strategy plan is easy to laugh about, especially as the final pilot from their crew gets run over by a Titan. It seems that, despite a few hiccups on Xbox Live's side of things, fans have also been able to enjoy a relatively smooth launch. An online-oriented experience that doesn't stumble its way into functionality? We know, it's crazy. We've got a review of both the game and the online experience, but if giant robots aren't really your thing, we've got our take on Dark Souls 2, Towerfall: Ascension and Yoshi's New Island, too. This week also brought us fresh NPD data, a Costume Quest 2 reveal and more, all of which is neatly compiled for you after the break in the Joystiq Weekly. [Image: Respawn]

The Last of Us only delivered wins on half of its BAFTA Games Award nominations, but since it was nominated ten times, the Naughty Dog game didn't do so bad. The Joystiq Game of 2013 picked up the Best Game award at last night's ceremony in London, along with Best Story, Action & Adventure, Audio Achievement, and Performer - that went to Ashley Johnson for her portrayal of Ellie. Other big-budget games did well with Grand Theft Auto 5 and Tearaway both walking away with three awards, but it was also a good night for indie games. The Gone Home team went home with Debut Game, Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons won Game Innovation, and Papers, Please stamped its name on the award for Strategy & Simulation. For the full list of nominees and winners, head over to BAFTA. Also, be sure to check out Steam's one-day-only sale on a selection of the nominated games. [Image: Sony Computer Entertainment]
