Sir, You Are Being Hunted dev drops Permutation Racer prototype
Big Robot, developer of the procedurally-generated survival game Sir, You Are Being Hunted, has released a free prototype of a racing game called Permutation Racer for PC and Mac. This isn't so much about getting the best times on tracks after spending weeks memorizing them, though - Permutation Racer is about blazing through sections of procedurally-generated track before the timer reaches zero. Clearing each checkpoint grants players a bit of extra time, and collecting the stars strewn across pathways will fill a boost meter that makes reaching the next section a bit more feasible. You can race across Permutation Racer's endlessly colorful track through the download links in Big Robot's announcement. Big Robot is also welcoming any thoughts, bug reports, screenshots or high score competitions you'd like to share on its forum.
Sir, You Are Being Hunted lines up on Steam, Humble Store on Aug. 19
Sir, You Are Being Hunted hits Steam and the Humble Store in an alpha version on August 19. For someone being hunted, it seems odd to announce an intended location on a specific date, but we're happy to have the information. And so are the hunters, we bet. The alpha version includes base-level hunter AI, dogs, sentry balloons and a mid-level robot guard, The Squire, all as enemies to out-maneuver with guns, bombs, traps and cunning. After playing through the game in this alpha version, another archipelago generates for a brand new, replayable experience. Developer Big Robot calls its release process "live development," with more content added over time and instantly available to those who own the alpha version. Pre-orders are live now on the Humble Store for $20, and all Kickstarter backers should get the game instantly on August 19. The game is in development for PC, Mac and Linux.

The Kickstarter for Sir, You Are Being Hunted ended today and was a resounding success, raising £92,551 of a requested £40,000 ($148,303/$64,096). This fell short of the £100,000 goal that would allow character creation and customization, but Big Robot said it "will endeavor to get some aspects of it into the game."Donations unlocked six of seven stretch goals, including a multiplayer mode. Multiplayer will not ship with the game, but it will be free for those who own it. Big Robot didn't alter the launch window of July 2013, but did add caution to its tale:"With plans to add a lot more content via stretch goals, it's sensible for us to say that the current July 2013 release goal might be subject to some slippage. We're still aiming for that date, of course, and we'll keep you guys aprised of any changes."A Steam version was still unconfirmed, but Big Robot said, "Naturally we are hoping to get on to Steam. All Kickstarter backers will get a Steam key when that happens. Stay tuned for news on that in the next few months." Tweedpunk shooter Sir, You Are Being Hunted has succeeded in reaching its £40,000 ($63,896) Kickstarter goal. The game (as of this writing) has received £42,322 in funding, with 24 days left to raise cold, hard pound sterling."Wow, we're stunned by how quickly we've hit target. Thanks, everyone! This money is going to help us turn our prototype into a fully-fledged game of being hunted by robots," the team at Big Robot wrote in an update. Sir, You Are Being Hunted is a "tweedpunk" game about well-dressed Victorian robots (and their well-trained robot dogs) hunting the player across procedurally generated English countryside. It's the work of the appropriately named Big Robot, headed by journalist Jim Rossignol.The first-person action game is due in 2013 for Windows, Mac, and Linux. The footage in this trailer represents an alpha version, but pretty much all the elements are in place for us to know this is worth keeping a glowing LED eye on.
