  • Bionic Commando demo glitch allows friends, extends time limit

If you've put much time into the Bionic Commando multiplayer demo on Xbox Live, you'll be aware of two painful facts. 1) You can't invite friends and 2) five minutes isn't nearly enough time to, ahem, get into the swing of things. If you would like to get rid of both of these annoyances in one swoop, Capcom Unity forum member Toshin has got you covered. The process is pretty simple: Open up the demo and press start, which will open the main menu (with the Xbox Live, Options and Quit Demo selections). Don't leave this screen. Have a friend send you a game invite for any game. Accept the invite, then choose no when it asks if you want to quit your current game session. You will be booted to the demo lobby, only now you can invite friends to the game and the time limit has been removed. Be sure you don't edit either the frag limit or the game mode, as doing so will crash the demo. We tried it, and it definitely works. Watch the process in the video above.

Okay, so don't laugh but, after watching the video above, we've reached the conclusion that we would totally play Bionic Middle Manager. We would then anticipate the (inevitable) sequels, Bionic Regional Manager and Bionic Division Vice President with great relish. You know how it's just incredibly fun to file things? Now imagine bionically filing things. Pretty sweet, right? All kidding aside, the latest bit of marketing for Bionic Commando is pretty funny (and gruesome). Is it too much to hope for an unlockable suit and tie in the game?

For all of you hotly anticipating the May 19 release of Bionic Commando, Capcom has dropped a gaggle of screens on us for your perusal, just below. Featuring Nathan "RAD" Spencer's (likely smelly and gross) flowing dreads in action as he swings through Ascension City -- as well as a variety of other combat scenes -- we can't help but reminisce on the days of yore when the dude couldn't even jump. Now he's in three freakin' dimensions!GRIN's upcoming action-adventure/third-person swingin' shooter has been available for multiplayer demoing via Xbox Live and PlayStation Network for the past few days, but for those of you without access to the internet ... well, we wonder how you're reading this. But maybe you're at the local library and needed your daily Bionic Commando screenshot fix. Bang! Here it is!%Gallery-51688%

  • Street Fighter IV PC to be joined by Resident Evil 5, Bionic Commando

    05.01.2009

Capcom just sent a press release our way confirming that the GFW Live-compatible Street Fighter IV will be accompanied by two other big Capcom games on PC: Resident Evil 5 and Bionic Commando. July will see the release of Street Fighter IV and Bionic Commando, with Resident Evil 5 arriving sometime later this year, featuring support for NVIDIA's new GeForce 3D Vision technology. Considering that Street Fighter IV supports GWF Live, we're assuming the other titles will, but the press release makes no mention of it. It only cites the games are "optimized for the PC platform and will have new PC-specific features added." We've put in word to Capcom and will update you all as soon as we hear back.

If you've got seven friends who don't mind changing their Xbox Live mottos to "Bionic Commando = RAD" you could win a Bionic Commando lunch box and 64,000 MS points for you and your buddies to split. Each of you will also get a code to download Bionic Commando Rearmed, if you're among the lucky chosen ones. But we're not helping you. Seriously, we don't care if you're coming up on the May 13th deadline and you just need one more. The answer is no.... OK, maybe. But we want the lunchbox.

Lube up your arm, because ... eww, that didn't sound great, did it? Well then, open your claw and swing from a pipe, because ... yikes, that's not much better. OK, listen, the Bionic Commando demo is coming out tomorrow on Xbox Live, and we can't think of a cute way to lead into that information that doesn't sound dirty. Sorry, it's early.Just as a reminder, if this multiplayer demo is eventually coming to PSN, it hasn't been announced. We'll let you know if we hear anything.%Gallery-24249%

  • Bionic Commando has Resident Evil 5 to thank for 'M' rating

Technically, the now-gen revival of Bionic Commando is rated "M" because of some violence and light language. But the reason that Capcom didn't trim that to go for a Teen rating is a bit more complex. MTV Multiplayer reports that the game was originally supposed to ship with a demo for the definitely M-rated Resident Evil 5.Plans changed and Bionic Commando ended up being released after RE5, and since it had already gotten an infusion of dirty words and blood, the rating stuck. Bad news for some, but good news for us who want one more reason to feel superior to 15-year-olds.

Ready to try your luck at bionic swinging in 3D? You'll be able to get an early hands-on with Bionic Commando in a multiplayer-only demo on Xbox Live later this month. The demo will offer 8-player deathmatch on "Vertigo," one of the game's 16 multiplayer maps. The full game will also feature team deathmatch and capture the flag modes. There's no word on a PS3 demo -- perhaps Sony's bandwidth policies have taken their toll? For now, only Xbox 360 owners will be able to get an early taste of struggling with the game's controls.%Gallery-24249%

Make that three copies of Bionic Commando you'll have to preorder: one at GameCrazy for the lunchbox, one at GameStop for the patches, and now one from Capcom's online store for this Bionic Commando: Chain of Command comic book. The book fills in the story gap between the NES Bionic Commando game and the new one. Chain of Command was serialized in digital form on the Bionic Commando website, but if you want the printed version with exclusive cover art from Dave "Watchmen" Gibbons, you'll have to buy the game.Oh, he's got a chain for an arm, and he's a command-o. Jim Sonzero, the cinematic director who worked on soon-to-be-released Resident Evil 5 told MTV that he's in talks with Capcom to develop a live-action film based on one of the company's properties. No young upstart, Sonzero has worked on commercials and a feature film, Wes Craven's Pulse (presumably, Jim Sonzero's Pulse lacked a little marquee punch).Sonzero's not talking specific IPs, so we'll leave it to you in the comments to speculate. Here, we'll start. Vin Diesel + blue armor + an arm that is a gun = box office gold.

  • Capcom: No online play for Bionic Commando: Rearmed the 'right choice'

    by
    Richard Mitchell

    01.27.2009

In a rather exhaustive postmortem of Bionic Commando: Rearmed on Gamasutra, Capcom producer Ben Judd shared his opinion that excluding online play from Rearmed was "the right choice." Said Judd, "After seeing the large amount of headaches, additional production time and cost that comes with adding online, I'm glad we made the choice not to include it." He noted that many digitally distributed games are plagued with online problems and that "additional sales would not have been equivalent to the additional pains" needed to add online play to the game. While we certainly have to agree that digitally distributed games have their share of online problems -- something any XBLA user can tell you -- we can't help but imagine the glories online play could have brought to Bionic Commando: Rearmed. At least we'll still be able to swing online in the upcoming 3D remake.

But in this industry, where story shares a balance with gameplay and endings often get the short end of the development stick, weaving a complete and compelling tale must be a daunting task. Now, gifts unwrapped and bellies full, our panel of industry personalities sound off on those games that they feel were up to the challenge, delivering storytelling experiences above and beyond their peers.
