Fresh off all <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/01/blackberry-world-2012-roundup/">the recent hoopla</a> surrounding BlackBerry 10, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/rim">Research In Motion</a> announced that the U.S. Department of Defense has approved the use of six <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/blackberry">BlackBerry</a> models on its networks. The smartphones receiving the green light are the BlackBerry Bold 9900 and 9930, BlackBerry Torch 9810, 9850 and 9860, and BlackBerry Curve 9360. RIM added that DoD and Army personnel will be able to use several capabilities added by the military for its BlackBerry users last year, including universal search, near field communications, augmented reality and the potential land mine that is Social Feeds 2.0 (whaddya mean <em>that</em> was classified?). No word on whether a certain BlackBerry <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/29/obama-says-presidential-blackberry-ownership-is-no-fun-should/">user-in-chief</a> will be getting an upgraded version of his device as well. For more details, feel free to march into the PR after the break.</p><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/10/blackberry-7-smartphones-get-dod-army-military-approval/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sir, yes, sir: BlackBerry 7 smartphones get DoD approval</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/10/blackberry-7-smartphones-get-dod-army-military-approval/">Sir, yes, sir: BlackBerry 7 smartphones get DoD approval</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 10 May 2012 21:28:00 EST. The units have been granted FIPS 140-2 certification, demonstrating a suitable level of cryptographic security to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/16/samsung-galaxy-s-ii-and-galaxy-tab-get-security-nod-certified-f/">protect sensitive information</a>. Gear that hasn't been FIPS-certified can't be purchased by Government agencies, so RIM can expect to see a substantial order of its Bold 9900 / 9930 / 9790, Torch 9850 / 9860 / 9810 and Curve 9350 / 9370 / 9380 phones, as President Obama looks to swell the number of people <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/29/obama-says-presidential-blackberry-ownership-is-no-fun-should/">legally allowed</a> to BBM-him. After the break we've got a missive from Waterloo expressing how proud it is now it's been Government-sanctioned.</div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/01/blackberry-7-devices-get-american-canadian-government-approval/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>BlackBerry 7 devices get American, Canadian Government approval</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/01/blackberry-7-devices-get-american-canadian-government-approval/">BlackBerry 7 devices get American, Canadian Government approval</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 01 Feb 2012 14:41:00 EST. First item on the agenda? Getting current users upgraded to the latest and greatest BlackBerry hardware. Citing internal statistics that indicate 80- to 90- percent of the company's customer base aren't running <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/blackberry7">BlackBerry 7</a> hardware yet, it will work closely with US carriers to promote upgrades until the new <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/blackberry10">BB10</a> devices hit later this year. There's no word on what the carrier deals include, but he hinted at device or preloaded app bundles. He also promised an <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/14/rim-playbook-tablet-now-in-delicious-lte-and-hspa-flavors/">LTE version of the PlayBook</a> would arrive this spring, with LTE connected handsets also planned for the BlackBerry 10 lineup. Is that enough to turn around RIM's fortunes in the US, where he acknowledged the company is "a turnaround candidate"? We'll find out, but as obvious as the need to placate the already BBM-addicted may be, execution of the plan is everything.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/27/shocker-new-rim-ceo-targets-existing-blackberry-users-for-upgra/">Shocker! It pre-dated the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/16/t-mobile-g1-review/">first Android handset</a> by a full year, and unlike the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/07/03/iphone-review/">original iPhone</a>, it was priced within reach of the average consumer. It introduced the masses to the possibilities of a connected and capable handset, and was the primary catalyst for the BlackBerry's meteoric rise to household name. With each subsequent iteration, however, the Curve remained a handset geared toward first-time smartphone buyers, and that axiom feels particularly true today.<br /><br /><div class="follow_this_in_post"> <img alt="" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/11/more_info_header_1.gif" /><br /> <div class="ftip_links"> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/03/rims-blackberry-curve-9360-outed-is-this-apollo/">RIM's BlackBerry Curve 9360 outed -- is this Apollo? </a></div> <div class="ftip_links"> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/23/rim-launches-new-blackberry-curve-video/">RIM launches new BlackBerry Curve (video) </a></div> <div class="ftip_links"> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/23/blackberry-curve-9360-hands-on/">Blackberry Curve 9360 hands-on </a></div></div>We're now presented with the Curve 9360 ($29.99, on contract), a device that's ostensibly hobbled in order to differentiate itself from RIM's higher-end offerings, most notably the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/16/blackberry-torch-9810-review/">Torch 9810</a> ($49), <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/03/rim-launches-blackberry-torch-9810-torch-9850-and/">Torch 9860</a> ($99) and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/16/blackberry-bold-9930-review/">Bold 9900</a> ($199). Specifically, we refer to its lack of a touchscreen. The omission will certainly be a deal-breaker for some, but whether it causes the market to reject it as a whole remains unknown. For our part, we're most interested in the impact on the handset's usability and its relevance in an increasingly competitive environment. In other words, has RIM included enough improvements to keep its Curve franchise afloat, or will this iteration sink like a stone? Join us after the break, as we delve into the Curve 9360 and explore these finer details.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/blackberry-curve-9360-review-1/">BlackBerry Curve 9360 review</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/blackberry-curve-9360-review-1/#4775815"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/gallery-dsc01133_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/blackberry-curve-9360-review-1/#4775803"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/gallery-dsc01104_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/blackberry-curve-9360-review-1/#4775804"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/gallery-dsc01105_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/blackberry-curve-9360-review-1/#4775814"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/gallery-dsc01132_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/blackberry-curve-9360-review-1/#4775805"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/gallery-dsc01107_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/26/blackberry-curve-9360-review/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>BlackBerry Curve 9360 review</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/26/blackberry-curve-9360-review/">BlackBerry Curve 9360 review</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 26 Jan 2012 12:00:00 EST. Its lineup of BlackBerry smartphones are known for great battery life, comfortable keyboards with intuitive shortcuts, top-notch native email and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/blackberry+enterprise+server/">Enterprise</a> clients and -- most important to businesses -- unrivaled security features. Sure, its influence is waning as competitors have caught up in some areas (and surpassed it in others), but there are plenty of companies that have clung to their CrackBerries and held on tight.<br /><br />RIM's been hard at work trying to regain lost momentum by introducing a series of new devices featuring its latest OS, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/blackberry%207/">BlackBerry 7</a>, and the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/16/blackberry-bold-9930-review/">BlackBerry Bold 9900 / 9930 series</a> has been the star of the show so far. The problem is, it's not flashy enough. How is a C-level exec supposed to walk proudly on the golf course with a $300 (subsidized) phone? Talk about embarrassing. Have no fear, poor corporate top dog, luxury brand Porsche Design has come up with a solution: the $2,300 <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/12/blackberry-porsche-design-p9981/">BlackBerry P'9981</a>, a Vertu-ized version of that lesser handset you wouldn't be caught dead using.<br /><br /><div class="follow_this_in_post"> <img alt="" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/11/more_info_header_1.gif" /><br /> <div class="ftip_links"> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/12/blackberry-porsche-design-p9981/">BlackBerry Porsche Design P'9981 hands-on</a></div> <div class="ftip_links"> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/20/rims-blackberry-porsche-design-p9981-gets-splayed-by-the-fcc/">BlackBerry Porsche Design P'9981 hits FCC</a></div> <div class="ftip_links"> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/27/porsche-design-p9981-blackberry-provides-a-long-awaited-design/">Porsche Design P'9981 introduced</a></div></div>The P'9981 is available only in the UK and the Middle East for now, so until the device arrives in the US this Spring, anyone who lives stateside will have to rely on retailers to import some in. Fortunately we got the hookup by our friends at <a href="https://negrielectronics.com/">Negri Electronics</a>, who happily lent us one of the few handsets they have in stock. As a result, we're now able to discuss the real questions circling around such a Richie Rich smartphone: what in the blue blazes makes this so expensive? Is it even worth it? How different is it from a standard BlackBerry Bold 9900? You'll find these answers and plenty of mysteries unravelled after the break. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/blackberry-porsche-design-p9981-overview/">BlackBerry Porsche Design P'9981 overview</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/blackberry-porsche-design-p9981-overview/#4771430"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/dsc09117_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/blackberry-porsche-design-p9981-overview/#4771431"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/dsc09120-1327382542_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/blackberry-porsche-design-p9981-overview/#4771432"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/dsc09130-1327382547_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/blackberry-porsche-design-p9981-overview/#4771433"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/dsc09132-1327382552_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/blackberry-porsche-design-p9981-overview/#4771434"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/dsc09134-1327382557_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/24/blackberry-porsche-design-p9981-review/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>BlackBerry Porsche Design P'9981 review</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/24/blackberry-porsche-design-p9981-review/">BlackBerry Porsche Design P'9981 review</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 24 Jan 2012 14:00:00 EST. Whoa, look what just showed up in our inbox! Research in Motion, of all outfits, ain't waiting until Mobile World Congress to generate itself some positive <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/30/rim-gets-handed-open-letter-from-disgruntled-employee-quickly-r/">buzz</a>, with the company announcing that it'll be holding "an intimate event" in Las Vegas on January 10th. Topics of conversation? For one, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/26/playbook-os-version-2-0-leaked-is-rim-really-sacking-bes/">PlayBook OS 2.0</a> will be on-hand, and given that we'd heard it was <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/26/rim-confirms-playbook-os-2-0-delayed-until-february-still-no-bb/">delayed until February</a>, one can only hope that it's launch has been accelerated. There's also BlackBerry 7 OS, which we suspect will generate roughly as many snores as it has the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/02/rim-announces-blackberry-os-7/">past eight months</a>. Whatever the case, you can bet we'll be there bringing you the deets.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update</strong>: In related news, <em>Pocket-lint</em> has confirmed that BlackBerry OS 10 will see a proper launch at Mobile World Congress next month. Anyone care to ask Mr. Eldar if that's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/03/eldar-murtazin-gives-rim-six-months-to-win-customers-nokia-selling-soul-microsoft/">soon enough</a>?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/05/rim-blackberry-playbook-os-2-ces-2012-event/">BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 to be shown at official CES 2012 event, BB 10 OS coming at MWC</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 05 Jan 2012 17:47:00 EST. Research in Motion's Jim Balsillie's currently in Dubai, gassing about how amazing the latest update to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/01/blackberry-7-gets-an-sdk-nfc-ar-other-acronyms/">BlackBerry 7 OS</a> will be -- probably between trips to the beach. When it arrives, those crackberries equipped with NFC (Bold <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/02/blackberry-bold-9900-hands-on/">9900</a> / 9930 and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/23/rim-launches-new-blackberry-curve-video/">Curve 9350 / 9360 / 9370</a>) will get BlackBerry Tag. You'll be able to tap two phones together to share contact details, multimedia content or add new friends to your <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/05/bbm-caught-cheating-with-android-crackberry-epidemic-to-spread/">BBM</a>. RIM is planning to open up the relevant APIs so developers can use the facility in any number of interesting ways, like bringing <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/09/hp-touchstone-tech-now-lets-you-tap-two-devices-together-to-swap/">touch-to-share</a> to the system. Considering the speed constraints of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/10/engadget-primed-what-is-nfc-and-why-do-we-care/">NFC</a>, it's difficult to believe that big files like images could be carried by the technology -- it's more likely that NFC will pair the devices and then send your files down a larger pipe, like Bluetooth. There's an enigmatic press release after the break, and hopefully the company will explain how this works in a little more detail before the update arrives.</div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/10/blackberry-tag-touch-to-share-for-multimedia/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>BlackBerry Tag: touch-to-share for... multimedia?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/10/blackberry-tag-touch-to-share-for-multimedia/">BlackBerry Tag: touch-to-share for... multimedia?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 10 Oct 2011 17:34:00 EST. If you haven't yet snagged one of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/blackberry/">RIM's</a> two newly refreshed Bold devices, you might want to hold off for the runt of the litter. Originally leaked back in May, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/23/blackberry-bold-9790-bellagio-offers-unsanctioned-tutorial-vide/">Bellagio 9790</a> borrows the bumped-up specs of its recently <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/16/blackberry-bold-9930-review/">unveiled</a> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/01/blackberry-bold-9900-now-available-on-t-mobile-still-late-to-th/">cousins</a>, while staying true to the slimmed-down form factor of its 9700 predecessor. The leaked shots over at <em>BGR</em> show the diminutive portrait QWERTY next to the 9900, clearly showcasing the former's likely 2.4-inch touchscreen, optical trackpad and 5 megapixel rear-facing camera. We already know this phone's destined to ship with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Blackberry7/">BlackBerry 7 OS</a>, but as for the rest of the feature list, expect it to pack 8GB of storage, NFC-capability and a 1.2GHz processor. Of course, rumors being what they are, this could all very well change before the handset's purported end of year launch. Curious to see more? Well, it looks as if Sprint's going to miss tomorrow's launch date for the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/23/rim-launches-new-blackberry-curve-video/">BlackBerry Curve 9350</a>. A representative of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/sprint">Now Network</a> confirmed the news to us today, stating that the phone will not arrive until next month due to "unexpected circumstances." While the company has yet to announce a new target date, the anonymous tipster who initially outed the story tells <em>Phone Arena</em> to expect an October 2nd arrival. Seeing that Sprint already sells two BlackBerry models that are <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/22/blackberry-bold-9930-torch-9850-go-on-sale-at-sprint-for-200/">appreciably better</a> than the Curve 9350, we hope you won't lose sleep over the revelation. Still, if you've got a personal grudge against touchscreens, you'd best reset that countdown timer, starting... now.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/09/sprints-blackberry-curve-9350-will-be-delayed-until-october/">Sprint's BlackBerry Curve 9350 will be delayed until October</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 09 Sep 2011 00:37:00 EST. Summer is in full swing, but if you happen to take a peek at AT&amp;T's leaked roadmap for the upcoming two quarters, you might just sense the chill of winter in the air. While this doesn't appear to be official from Ma Bell, or entirely exhaustive, we've gotten a spreadsheet that goes in-depth to out the carrier's upcoming smartphones. A host of Android devices are on the list -- all with Gingerbread -- along with two handsets that strut Windows Phone 7.5 and another duo with BlackBerry 7. Of particular note, we see the Samsung SGH-i777 (otherwise known as the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/16/samsung-galaxy-s-ii-us-carrier-names-revealed-atandt-attain-veri/">Attain</a>), along with the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/26/samsung-android-slider-leaked-likely-en-route-to-atandt/">SGH-i927</a> for you QWERTY slider lovers. Both Sammy's sport Category 14 HSDPA, or (up to) 21Mbps downloads. Curiously, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/23/samsung-impulse-4g-to-lead-atandt-lte-charge/">Impulse</a> -- Ma Bell's rumored LTE phone -- is nowhere to be found. The Motorola MB865, with a full gigabyte of RAM and 8 megapixel camera, aligns very well with the rumored <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/28/motorola-atrix-sequel-gets-candid-with-the-camera-heading-for-a/">Atrix refresh</a>. You've <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/23/blackberry-curve-9360-hands-on/">seen</a> the two phones from RIM <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/03/atandt-to-launch-blackberry-torch-9810-this-month-torch-9860-and/">before</a>, and while Samsung's Mango handset spent a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/12/microsoft-unveils-new-windows-phone-7-handsets-from-samsung-ace/">brief moment</a> in the wild, little is known about HTC's counterpart. Hopefully we won't need to wait for the <em>actual</em> change of seasons to learn more.</div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/24/atandts-fall-and-winter-2011-roadmap-leaked-in-spreadsheet-glory/">AT&amp;T's fall and winter 2011 roadmap leaked in spreadsheet glory</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 24 Aug 2011 03:53:00 EST. Want to get your <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/BBM/">BBM</a> on in style without spending a fortune on <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/03/rim-launches-blackberry-torch-9810-torch-9850-and/">RIM's latest trio</a>? Say hello to the new 11mm (0.43 inch) thin BlackBerry Curve, now official in 3 variants -- the dual-mode GSM / CDMA 9370, the GSM / UMTS 9360 and the CDMA-only 9350. These <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/30/blackberry-apollo-gets-manhandled-on-camera-video/">long</a> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/08/blackberry-orlando-leaks-out-say-hello-to-the-touchscreen-curve/">rumored</a> handsets feature an 800MHz CPU, 512MB RAM, a tiny 2.44-inch HVGA+ (480&times;360 pixel) display, a five megapixel <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/EDoF/">EDoF</a> camera (with LED flash and VGA video recording), Bluetooth, WiFi b/g/n with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/UMA/">UMA</a>, GPS / aGPS and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/NFC/">NFC</a>. While there's no sign of that new-fangled touch screen technology, you'll find <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/BlackBerry7/">BlackBerry 7</a> under the hood, along with a 1000mAh battery to keep it ticking all day long, 512MB of built-in storage (1GB on the 9370) and microSD card support (up to 32GB). RIM is still mum on pricing, but the new BlackBerry Curve is "expected to be available from carriers in Canada this month and from other carriers around the world beginning in September" -- including Vodafone, based on the video (and PR) after the break. We'll have a hands-on later today so stay tuned for more.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update</strong>: It's official, the BlackBerry Curve 9350 will be coming to Sprint on September 9th for a perfectly reasonable $80 -- provided you're willing to sign a two year contract and after a $50 mail-in rebate. We've tacked on the PR after the break.<br />

<br />
As expected, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/16/blackberry-torch-9850-review/">BlackBerry Torch 9850</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/16/blackberry-bold-9930-review/">BlackBerry Bold 9930</a> went on sale at Sprint yesterday as part of its BlackBerry 7 lineup. Both phones feature 1.2GHz Snapdragon processors and five-megapixel cameras, but the 9850 has a 3.7-inch touch-only display compared to the Bold's 2.8-inch screen and keyboard combination. Purchased online with contracts and after rebates, the 9850 is selling for $150 while the 9930 is going for a cool $200 -- a departure from the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/15/sprints-blackberry-bold-9930-and-torch-9850-land-on-august-21st/">originally announced</a> Bold price tag of $249, with no mention of cash back. For Sprint users, a rebate is clearly better than no rebate -- even if it does require a stamp.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/22/blackberry-bold-9930-torch-9850-go-on-sale-at-sprint-for-200/">BlackBerry Bold 9930, Torch 9850 go on sale at Sprint for $200, $150</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 22 Aug 2011 14:02:00 EST. The wait is over for BlackBerry fans from coast to coast who happen to use Ma Bell, as the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/16/blackberry-torch-9810-review/">BlackBerry Torch 9810</a> -- the first of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/16/blackberry-torch-9850-review/">three</a> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/16/blackberry-bold-9930-review/">devices</a> in RIM's fall lineup -- is <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/15/atandt-confirms-49-99-price-tag-august-21st-launch-date-for-4g/">now available</a> at AT&amp;T stores. All it'll set you back is a respectable $50 (with a two-year commitment, of course), and you'll then be ready to get your OS 7 on along with Liquid Graphics, a full QWERTY keyboard, a 1.2GHz CPU, and more than plenty of the usual RIM features you've come to love or hate. There's a good chance you've already heard a thing or two (<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/16/blackberry-bold-9930-review/">or a hundred</a>) about the <a href="http://mobile.engadget.com/tag/blackberry%20bold%20touch%209900/">BlackBerry Bold 9900</a> series, so by now you have a good idea whether or not you'll want to pick one up. So if you're leaning toward "buy," T-Mobile's got one coming to a retail store near you on August 31st, with the phone on presale for business customers starting today. Procurers of the new device will need to shell out $300 after a $50 mail-in rebate. Early adopters, start your engines! We have to hand it to Research in Motion. No matter what feelings you may have for (or against) the company, it's sure doing a great job staying in the news day after day. After unleashing a bevy of reviews for the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/16/blackberry-bold-9930-review/">Bold 9930</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/16/blackberry-torch-9810-review/">Torch 9810</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/16/blackberry-torch-9850-review/">Torch 9850</a>, now we're hearing whisperings about the latest Curve. The 9360, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/03/rims-blackberry-curve-9360-outed-is-this-apollo/">aka the Apollo</a>, is ready to make its way to both sides of the northern border, beginning its North American tour with Bell on August 29th and swiftly making its way to T-Mobile September 14th. We're hearing that the 9360 will have a 2.4-inch screen with 480 x 360 resolution, an 800MHz CPU, and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/26/blackberry-curve-apollo-gets-featured-in-tutorial-clips-bb-7/">BlackBerry 7 installed</a>. As is the case with most leaked screenshots, we can't know for sure that these days will actually stick, but at least it gives us a solid indication that the device is inbound sooner than we were expecting.</div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/16/blackberry-curve-9360-going-to-bell-august-29th-t-mobile-septem/">BlackBerry Curve 9360 going to Bell August 29th, T-Mobile September 14th</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 16 Aug 2011 20:20:00 EST. It's been something of a long time coming, this emboldened Bold. We got our <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/19/blackberry-dakota-montana-spotted-in-the-wild-sporting-thread/">first glimpse</a> of the thing in February, spent some <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/24/blackberry-bold-9900-preview-video/">quality time</a> with it back in June, and since then have sat around eagerly awaiting its release. Now, here it is. From a distance, or at a quick glance, it looks little changed from 2008's <a href="http://mobile.engadget.com/2008/11/10/atandt-blackberry-bold-hands-on/">Bold 9000</a>. But get closer, pick it up, and the difference is astonishing.<br />
<br />
RIM has gone to great pains to talk up this device's high-end design, its luxurious stylings, its sophisticated aesthetic. We're far from <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/vertu">Vertu</a> territory here, but the first time this phone hits your palm you know a lot of people spent a lot of time making it feel just right -- even if it still looks just the same. Of course, it's what's inside that counts, so join us as we find out whether the soft and hard bits beneath the surface can do the business too.<br />

Monza. It's a beautiful part of Italy, a majestic park split by one of the most historic racetracks in the world, and it was also the codename for this rather more homely looking phone. This is a handset that would go on to be known by many names (Storm 3, Touch...) before receiving its final moniker: Torch 9850. Why all the pseudonyms, and why choose to confusingly overlap this with the somewhat similar but rather different Torch 9810 that's also officially launching today?<br />
<br />
Maybe RIM didn't know what to make of this keyboard-free phone. Maybe the company wanted to distance itself from the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/19/blackberry-storm-review/">Storm</a>. Or, maybe what we have here is a smartphone that's trying to find an identity by sadly ditching the feature that, for many, makes a BlackBerry a BlackBerry: the physical keyboard. How does this smoothie compare to the others, and is it worth sacrificing all the QWERTY wonder found within the 9810? Read on to find out.<br />

	BlackBerry fans who prefer conducting business at the speed of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/sprint/">"Now"</a> will be getting their <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/03/rims-blackberry-torch-9850-goes-official-for-sprint-and-us-cell/">new fixations</a> -- the Bold 9930 and Torch 9850 -- on August 21st. This is according to a pair of internal documents leaked from Sprint, which suggest RIM's new touch-enabled QWERTY handset will carry a $250 price tag, while its counterpart, the full touchscreen (and similarly specced) 9850, will sell for a more palatable $150. We understand the keyboard addiction is hard to break, but that's quite a monetary motivation to choose full touch.<br />
	<br />
	In related news up north, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/bell/">Bell</a> has beaten its August 16th <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/03/blackberry-bold-9900-and-torch-9810-to-hit-bell-on-august-16th/">target date</a> for the Bold 9900 and Torch 9810, as both devices are now available to its Canadian customers for $170 and $150, respectively. Granted, these prices represent Bell's standard three year commitment, but at least they remain reasonable -- unlike the option from a certain <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/03/blackberry-bold-9900-appears-in-leaked-t-mo-docs-reveals-august/">Magenta-themed</a> network. Also, we've got some good news for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/rogers/">Rogers</a> customers, as the carrier has lowered the price of its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/10/blackberry-bold-9900-available-on-rogers-today-torch-9810-comes/">Bold 9900</a> to a more suitable $200, compared to the original $250. Hey Sprint, care to follow suit?<br />

	While we'd heard word on Bell's -- and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/03/rims-blackberry-torch-9850-goes-official-for-sprint-and-us-cell/">most</a> of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/03/rims-blackberry-torch-9810-emerges-on-atandts-website-touts-4g/">US</a> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/03/blackberry-bold-9900-appears-in-leaked-t-mo-docs-reveals-august/">carriers</a> -- <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/03/blackberry-bold-9900-and-torch-9810-to-hit-bell-on-august-16th/">pending launch</a> of the Bold 9900 and Torch 9810 <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/BlackBerry7/">BlackBerry 7</a> devices, the Rogers rumor mill stayed shuttered. That's all changed with the lovely screengrab you can peep above apparently from the Rogers point-of-sale system upgrades department. While sadly this little gem doesn't mention dates or pricing for this highly anticipated duo, Rogers has typically been first to market with new BlackBerry goods in Canada -- and we're hopeful that holds true in this case. But if we had to guess at a ballpark figure, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/08/blackberry-bold-9900-on-pre-order-at-vodafone-uk-first-official-price/">Vodafone UK</a> priced the Bold 9900 at roughly $650 and has us thinking we might see something in that realm over here. There's no question we'll be following this like the cell-loving sleuths you expect us to be, so please pop back soon for more.</div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/08/blackberry-bold-9900-and-torch-9810-appear-in-rogers-upgrade-sys/">BlackBerry Bold 9900 and Torch 9810 appear in Rogers upgrade system</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 08 Aug 2011 09:53:00 EST. Did RIM forget this budget entry update, or was it pushed aside for this morning's announcements of its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/03/rim-launches-blackberry-torch-9810-torch-9850-and/">higher-end BlackBerry</a> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/03/rims-blackberry-torch-9850-goes-official-for-sprint-and-us-cell/">brothers</a>? No matter the case, <em>OneMobileRing</em> got a hands-on with the Curve 9360, and it looks like this portrait QWERTY could be following in its brethren's <a _mce_href="http://mobile.engadget.com/2011/05/26/blackberry-curve-apollo-gets-featured-in-tutorial-clips-bb-7/" href="http://mobile.engadget.com/2011/05/26/blackberry-curve-apollo-gets-featured-in-tutorial-clips-bb-7/">OS 7 footsteps</a>. Shots of the device reveal a Tour-like chrome trim, optical trackpad and the requisite micro-USB port for your charging / connectivity needs. A pic of the device's open battery door also shows off a SIM card slot, leading us to believe that this may very well be the ever-elusive <a _mce_href="http://mobile.engadget.com/2011/05/26/blackberry-curve-apollo-gets-featured-in-tutorial-clips-bb-7/" href="http://mobile.engadget.com/2011/05/26/blackberry-curve-apollo-gets-featured-in-tutorial-clips-bb-7/">Apollo</a>. Could we see this mid-end, GSM workhorse in <a _mce_href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/13/blackberry-curve-apollo-leak-provides-image-details-no-relat/" href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/13/blackberry-curve-apollo-leak-provides-image-details-no-relat/">T-Mobile's near future</a>? Well BlackBerry fans, yet another <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/blackberry+bold/">variation of the Bold</a> is now making the rounds on the internet: it's the 9790, otherwise known as the Bellagio. Although the device was first leaked in late May -- where we learned it would feature <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/02/rim-announces-blackberry-os-7/">BlackBerry 7 OS</a>, 8GB of internal memory, a touchscreen, and NFC -- RIM's latest QWERTY companion has remained below the radar ever since. Now, it's reappeared in some official tutorials, which reveal a <a href="http://mobile.engadget.com/2011/05/26/blackberry-curve-apollo-gets-featured-in-tutorial-clips-bb-7/">familiar user interface</a>. Also, two other videos offer views of the handset's exterior profile and a quick peek beneath the battery cover. Why are Lazaridis and Balsillie prepping this for sale when the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/24/blackberry-bold-9900-preview-video/">Bold 9900</a> has yet to reach consumers? All we need is one, and the similar hardware and specs aren't building a compelling argument. Sure, RIM said it would be releasing <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/13/rim-aims-to-launch-seven-smartphones-with-blackberry-os-7-in-th/">seven upcoming smartphones</a> in the coming months, but haven't its leaders learned that less is more? Follow the source for an extended peek at the redundancy.</div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/23/blackberry-bold-9790-bellagio-offers-unsanctioned-tutorial-vide/">BlackBerry Bold 9790 Bellagio offers unsanctioned tutorial (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sat, 23 Jul 2011 06:26:00 EST. RIM's <a href="http://engadget.com/tag/9900">BlackBerry 9900</a> is the device that the BlackBerry diehards have been hoping, wishing, and waiting for since the original Bold launched way back <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/22/its-official-blackberry-bold-hits-atandt-on-november-4/">in 2008</a>. However, this time around the company has added in a capacitive touchscreen, swapped the trackball of yesteryear for an optical trackpad, and slimmed the whole thing down into a 10.5mm thick package. We were lucky enough to get a prototype device from our friends over at <a href="http://negrielectronics.com/">Negri Electronics</a>, and have manhandled the thing till we were blue in the face. Head on past the break for an exclusive preview of the device RIM is praying will stalwart its competitors until the first round of QNX-equipped devices lands in 2012.<br />

We've already seen the <a href="http://engadget.com/tag/torch 2">BlackBerry Torch 2</a> in photos courtesy of Mr. Blurrycam, but a little birdie from Negri Electronics was kind enough to send over a pre-release device for us to get under our own glass for a little photo shoot. Though it has a virtually identical form factor to the original, the Torch 2 bumps the specs in almost every department from the camera to the RAM. Oh, and it's running the next-gen <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/02/rim-announces-blackberry-os-7/">BB OS 7</a> -- which is really OS 6.1, and still lacks any <a href="http://engadget.com/tag/QNX">QNX</a> DNA. Read on past the break for a full preview of this yet-to-be-announced slider, and some glorious HD video if the beautious shots aren't enough to whet your BBM-hungry appetites.<br />

<a href="http://engadget.com/tag/blackberry">BlackBerry</a> fans itching to get your touch on: don't reach for your wallets just yet. <em>BGR</em> is reporting that RIM's upcoming Bold 9900 has been delayed until September, which is a bit later than the expected "Summer" release quoted back at BlackBerry World. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/02/rim-announces-blackberry-os-7/">BlackBerry 7 OS</a> is coming soon but, to take advantage of all those fancy features like NFC and the digital compass (ok, some of them aren't <em>that</em> fancy), devs are going to need some new APIs -- enter the BlackBerry 7 Java SDK. Creators of BlackBerry apps can go download the beta of the new software development kit at the source link and start whipping up augmented reality browsers and 3D games, thanks to support for OpenGL ES 2.0. There's nothing mind-blowing about RIM's latest update, but we're glad to see the corporate stalwart start to catch up to other smartphone OSes, and it's only a matter of time before <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/layar"><em>Layar</em></a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/quake"><em>Quake</em></a> hit the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/02/blackberry-bold-9900-hands-on/">BlackBerry Bold 9900</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/01/blackberry-7-gets-an-sdk-nfc-ar-other-acronyms/">BlackBerry 7 gets an SDK, NFC, AR, other acronyms</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 01 Jun 2011 10:30:00 EST. If you ache to get your hands on the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/02/blackberry-bold-9900-and-9930-bold-touch-official/">BlackBerry Bold Touch</a> and lack any semblance of patience, RIM's recently leaked simulator offers an opportunity to vicariously manhandle its upcoming creation -- all from the comfort of your Windows computer. Although the software isn't without quirks (as evidenced above), the 177MB download includes system v6.1.0.55 -- more commonly known as <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/27/rim-to-launch-6-1-update-as-blackberry-7-os-at-blackberry-world/">BlackBerry 7 OS</a>. The functionality is rather robust, and we happily took the web browser for a quick drive around the block. It provided a pleasant rendering of our sister-site <em>Autoblog</em>, but the simulator started sputtering once we approached our own domain. Perhaps you'll have better luck. So, if you're suitably equipped and a wee bit curious, you can start kicking these tires by following the source.<br />

It's not exactly the most exciting device in RIM's pipeline, but the <a href="http://mobile.engadget.com/2011/05/26/blackberry-curve-apollo-gets-featured-in-tutorial-clips-bb-7/">Curve "Apollo"</a> is shaping a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/13/blackberry-curve-apollo-leak-provides-image-details-no-relat/">solid workhorse</a> of a BlackBerry. The still-unannounced smartphone popped up on <em>Tinh te</em>, with the Vietnamese tech showing off some solid hands-on time with the device, putting it through its paces on video, and ending up genuinely impressed with the aesthetics and speed of the hardware. According to the site the new Curve is 11mm thick (a couple millimeters thinner than the 8900 it's juxtaposed with), packs a 800Mhz Marvell Tavor CPU MG-1 processor, and has a touch-insensitive 480 x 360 screen. Swipe that thumb touchpad after the break for a video tour of the phone, then dig the source link for more close up images.<br />

If you've been yearning to meet the upcoming <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/13/blackberry-curve-apollo-leak-provides-image-details-no-relat/">BlackBerry Curve 'Apollo'</a> on a more personal level, we think its leaked training videos will serve a fine ocular opportunity. While they're certainly no replacement for hands-on experience, these clips were discovered within a leaked copy of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/02/rim-announces-blackberry-os-7/">BlackBerry 7 OS</a> and provide a concise overview of user interaction with the device. It's no <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/08/blackberry-orlando-leaks-out-say-hello-to-the-touchscreen-curve/">touchscreen experience</a>, that's for sure. Judging from the hovering orb that represents both your finger and wait times, we're not expecting this creation to be overly speedy, although these tutorials (hopefully) don't represent actual usage. On the plus side, there's some nice music accompanying the tour, which makes waiting for menus to appear feel downright enjoyable. Jump the break for an unsanctioned peek.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/26/blackberry-curve-apollo-gets-featured-in-tutorial-clips-bb-7/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>BlackBerry Curve 'Apollo' gets featured in tutorial clips, BB 7 OS struts its stuff (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/26/blackberry-curve-apollo-gets-featured-in-tutorial-clips-bb-7/">BlackBerry Curve 'Apollo' gets featured in tutorial clips, BB 7 OS struts its stuff (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 26 May 2011 17:16:00 EST. The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/24/rim-deems-blackberry-os-6-1-a-major-upgrade-promises-a-spring/">BB OS 6.1 update</a> that grew <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/27/rim-to-launch-6-1-update-as-blackberry-7-os-at-blackberry-world/">too big for its name</a> has just been made official by RIM as BlackBerry 7. Its ambassador into the wide world of smartphones will be the newly minted <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/02/blackberry-bold-9900-and-9930-bold-touch-official/">BlackBerry Bold Touch</a>, which is expected to arrive "this summer." What can you look forward to? The user experience is promised to be both easier and faster, voice-activated searches are available for content both on your phone and the web, and the browser has been "significantly enhanced" with new features like a JIT (just-in-time) JavaScript compiler and HTML5 Video support. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/24/blackberry-balance-details-emerge-available-in-two-months-time/">BlackBerry Balance</a> is also part of the new OS, allowing you to compartmentalize your personal and professional lives into neat and separate piles of content. Full PR can be found after the break.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update:</strong> RIM has just noted that there will be "no legacy support" with BB 7, meaning that older devices, even those running version 6 of the OS, won't be getting any (official) updates to the latest stuff. This has been justified by how tightly integrated the software build is with the underlying graphics hardware in the touch-capable Bold handsets. Basically, the old phones won't be able to run the new OS. Oh, and in case you were wondering, there's no trace of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/13/blackberry-playbook-review/">QNX</a> in BB 7.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/02/rim-announces-blackberry-os-7/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>RIM announces BlackBerry 7 OS with better browser and BlackBerry Balance, but no legacy support</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/02/rim-announces-blackberry-os-7/">RIM announces BlackBerry 7 OS with better browser and BlackBerry Balance, but no legacy support</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 02 May 2011 08:30:00 EST.
