Not all mobile news is destined for the front page, but if you're like us and really want to know what's going on, then you've come to the right place. This past week, Verizon Wireless brought its LTE service to 28 new markets and expanded its reach in 11 additional areas. We also saw Straight Talk introduce the Samsung Galaxy Proclaim, and it appears that Rogers will soon offer the HTC One S. These stories and more await after the break. So buy the ticket and take the ride as we explore the "best of the rest" for this week of May 14th, 2012.

It's been a long time in the making, but the BlackBerry Desktop Software for PCs has just made the jump from version 6.1 to 7.0. Despite the significant numeric hurdle, the software is scant for new features and only a handful of known issues have been fixed. New to the revision, the organizer synchronization component has been overhauled for easier setup and BlackBerry users may now import individual pictures and videos from within the utility -- as if USB Mass Storage mode didn't work well enough. A bug that incorrectly minimized the software to the system tray has been resolved, along with a couple of annoyances that relate only to BES users. Meanwhile, the list of known issues is nearly four pages long. Yikes. Ever get the feeling this software release could've been more aptly named version 6.1.0.37?

BlackBerry owners who use Mac computers, your digital life is about to get a little easier. Just over a year ago, BlackBerry introduced its syncing software for BlackBerry handsets and Mac OS X, and it's just been updated to version 2.0. Along side the ability to back up and restore your handset, synchronize contacts, calenders, appointments, tasks, notes and apps, as well as the ability to move files between your Mac and BlackBerry, Research In Motion (RIM) has introduced some pretty exciting new features, too. Mac OS X users can now sync their iTunes music library to their BlackBerry device over Wi-Fi and import and sync photos and videos taken on their handset with iPhoto. RIM has also introduced a nice device switch feature, too -- if you're migrating from one BlackBerry smartphone to another, it's now super simple using BlackBerry Desktop Software 2.0. The update requires Mac OS X 10.5.5 or above, BlackBerry Device Software 4.2 or above and weighs in at just over 37 megabytes. The update is available now, so hit the source link to go and download it. [Via Engadget]

About time, eh? Wintel users have been enjoying the spoils of WiFi music sync on their BlackBerry handsets for the past few months now, but if you're still stickin' with RIM (through the thick and thin), and you just so happen to roll primarily on OS X, there's a new piece of software that you should consider. BlackBerry Desktop Software 2.0 for Mac OS has just been let loose, and it's a pretty substantial update. Aside from supporting WiFi music sync in official fashion, there's also a new device switch wizard and the ability to import and sync photos and videos with iPhoto and iTunes. She's waiting for you there in the source link -- all 39.713 megabytes. You know what to do.

It's not as cool as BlackBerry 6 on your phone, of course -- but owners of RIM devices are probably going to want to check out the latest release of BlackBerry Desktop, which adds new settings transfer capabilities, a new-from-the-ground-up UI, and integrated Media Sync -- including support for the trick WiFi sync mode that's new in BlackBerry 6. It's only available for PCs at the moment, but take heart, Mac owners: 6.0's UI updates were designed to bring the PC software up to snuff with what you'd already had, anyway.
