Borderlands 2 players can get their collective teeth into a second Headhunter pack next week, when The Horrible Hunger of the Ravenous Wattle Gobbler launches on November 26. Gearbox is serving it up on Steam, Xbox 360, and PS3 at the digestible price of $3. The third Headhunter DLC, titled How Marcus Saved Mercenary Day, is due in December. As the name suggests there's a Thanksgiving air to the Wattle Gobbler DLC, with the head you're hunting this time belonging to a giant turkey. Should you succeed, you'll earn new character heads and skins as gaudy emblems of your seasonal success, you monster, you.

As part of its second-quarter financial results issued today, Take-Two revealed that Gearbox's Borderlands 2 has shipped over 7.5 million copies to retailers. "Borderlands 2 has sold-in over 7.5 million units and counting, and is on track to becoming the highest-selling title in 2K's history," Take-Two president Karl Slatoff said. Retailers had stocked over 6 million units of Borderlands 2 as of February, with sales spurred by the frequent release of downloadable content and the recent launch of a DLC-bundled Game of the Year Edition.

The second Headhunter DLC pack for Borderlands 2 drops in November and is a warbled mess to say out loud: "Headhunter 2: Wattle Gobbler." The launch window popped up in Take-Two Interactive's financials for Q2 2014. The Headhunter DLC series kicked off this month with TK Baha's Bloody Harvest, which we ran through – screaming (with laughter) – in a live stream last week. The Headhunter trials are self-contained missions each with a unique boss whose head you get to keep and wear once he's slain. TK Baha's Bloody Harvest costs $3 and went live on Steam, Xbox 360 and PS3 on October 22. With a name like Wattle Gobbler, we're hoping the second Headhunter pack has something to do with giant, mutant turkeys and guns that shoot carving knives.

Borderlands 2's "headhunter" series begins with a trip to hollow out a Pumpkin Kingpin's head for your Vault Hunter to wear. The downloadable content with the Thanksgiving mouthful of a name, "Headhunter 1: TK Baha's Bloody Harvest," will be available on Steam, Mac, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on October 22. Each headhunter installment will culminate with Vault Hunters fighting a "rather unique" boss and then taking their head to wear. It's far less creepy than that Hannibal Lecter image you've got in your head. This first installment concludes with a trip to the Pumpkin Kingpin's pumpkin patch to claim his orange melon. Are pumpkins melons? Too early to Wiki it. The DLC is priced at $2.99 and can be completed "in a single sitting," according to 2K Games. In keeping with the spirit of Halloween, there will also be pieces of candy from enemy drops that provide temporary buffs. Oooo, piece of candy. Ooo, piece of candy...

If you've somehow avoided accumulating a backlog over the year or just enjoy the act of spending money, Steam and Amazon have some weekend gaming deals to help you burn cash. Steam enthusiasts can splurge on the service's 2K Games Weekend, which includes Bioshock Infinite for $13.59 $26.79 and Civilization 5, Spec Ops: The Line and Borderlands 2 for $14.99 apiece. PixelJunk Monsters Ultimate is $9.99, or if you say to hell with the past decade, 1998's Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition is an even $5. Amazon has blacked out $30 from The Bureau: XCOM Declassified's price on Xbox 360 and PS3 while knocking the PC version down to $19.99. Splinter Cell: Blacklist has crept its way to $39.99 for the Xbox 360, PS3, PC and Wii U, but you can gear up for a special mission with its Aircraft Edition for $99.99 on the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. If you'd rather get ready for the PlayStation 4, Amazon is also offering $30 of bonus credit towards a DualShock 4 if you trade in $30 worth of qualifying video games. You can check to see if anything you're willing to part with is eligible through the search function on the promotion's page. Update: The 66 percent off deal for Bioshock Infinite has passed. The game is now available for $26.79, 33 percent off of the initial price.

  • Shoot things in Borderlands 2 for a chance at winning loot, cash prizes

Borderlands 2's upcoming Loot Hunt competition will give you a shot at earning in-game and real-life prizes as you mow down the inhabitants of Pandora. Once players register at the event's site, they can enter themselves in the raffle by hunting Daily Targets within the game starting on October 11. The prize pool will include loot chests filled with Nvidia Shield and Falcon Northwest Tiki PC combos, Nvidia GeForce GTX 660 Ti GFX cards, PlayStation Vitas with copies of Borderlands 2 Vita (once it's released), and lifetime passes to everything 2K ever has and will put out on Steam. One player will also win $50,000 in cash while four others earn scaled amounts from a second pool of $50,000. If you don't win a physical prize, you'll still have a collective chance with other players at "unique in-game loot" by completing the loot hunt's Community Goals. The event's site describes these as daily campaigns of genocide against "a special type of enemy with that day's unique gun." If enough are slaughtered in the name of personal benefit, those involved will earn a special gun at the end of the week. Only players in the US are eligible for the physical rewards, but the in-game rewards will be available to vault hunters worldwide.

  • Sony creates Third Party Production division

Sony created a new division with the purpose of bringing third party games to its platforms, Vice President of Third Parties Adam Boyes announced during the PlayStation Indie Arcade event at PAX Prime today. During the event, Boyes elaborated on how the division came about, and it started with the desire to bring Borderlands 2 to Vita. "We realized that we had to build an entire division in order to make Borderlands 2 on Vita happen," Boyes said. To create the division, Sony hired Gio Corsi, former lead producer at LucasArts and executive producer of the now-halted Star Wars 1313. "The big vision there was for us to be able to take these IPs from publishers and famous IPs that people love and then let developers work with it," Boyes said. Iron Galaxy Studios, developers of the recently-released fighter Divekick, will develop Borderlands 2 on Vita.

Borderlands 2's second level-cap increase will take place on Tuesday, September 3, when the game's new Ultimate Vault Hunter Upgrade Pack 2: Digistruct Peak Challenge DLC pack becomes available on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC and Mac for $4.99. Unlike the first Ultimate Vault Hunter Upgrade Pack, Digistruct Peak Challenge is not included in the game's DLC Season Pass. In addition to raising the level cap by 11 (to a maximum of 72 when stacked with the first Ultimate Vault Hunter Pack), Digistruct Peak Challenge also includes new weapons, new character customization options and a new map/mission, Raid on Digistruct Peak. Owning both Ultimate Vault Hunter Packs unlocks even more stuff, such as more weapons, "Legendary Class Mods" and tougher enemies that drop better loot.

Tiny Tina, stuck in a precarious position, doesn't sulk. She rides that reading rainbow and lets her imagination (and undiagnosed psychosis) get her out of a particularly prickly situation. Although not tied to any particular promotion, this Borderlands 2 short comes shortly after the game's GOTY announcement.

Gearbox unveiled the Game of the Year edition of Borderlands 2 today, which features all the major content released for the 2012 wasteland wonder so far, including the four Season Pass expansions, the two bonus characters, and a whole ton of other loot. It's priced $60, and hits North America on October 8, and internationally October 11. GOTY editions can be hit-and-miss, but much like the game itself, Gearbox has stuffed Borderlands 2's bundle with content a-plenty. In addition to the game, you'll get the four DLC expansions; that's Captain Scarlett and her Pirate's Booty, Mr. Torgue's Campaign of Carnage, Sir Hammerlock's Big Game Hunt, and Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep. They were bundled together for $30 in the season pass, so that's a pretty good start. The GOTY edition also features the pre-order-tied Premiere Club content, including first bonus character Gaige, as well as second addition Krieg. Also in there is the formerly GameStop-exclusive Creature Slaughter Dome, as well as the heads and skins from the Collector's Edition, and the Ultimate Vault Hunter Upgrade Pack 1, which raises the level cap and also adds a few other assorted add-ons.

  • Bungie talks Destiny's connected play, Far Cry and Borderlands influence

    by
    Mike Foster

    07.31.2013

In an interview with Edge Magazine, Destiny creative director Joe Staten took a moment to acknowledge the contributions of other open world shooters to the Destiny development process. Staten noted that the dev team analyzes titles like Borderlands and Far Cry and looks at "the things they're doing well and also at opportunities they might have missed that we can capitalize on." One big missed opportunity according to Staten? Encountering other players in the wild: You can party up with a group of people and then go around with that group, but never in Borderlands are you going to collide with a group of other people doing it too. We don't just do that once or twice in the game, we do that all the time, everywhere. You see other people on the horizon, hear gunfire over a hill and see space magic flying behind some trees, and you know...there are other people out here, that [changes everything]. Colliding with other people is sort of the core component of most MMOs, though Destiny may be the first big console-specific shooter to rely on such mechanics to fill out its game world. Staten also confirmed that Destiny will offer a leveling system complete with talent points -- another feature fans of MMOs will likely find quite familiar.

  • Borderlands 2 to get content boost this fall

    by
    John-Michael Bond

    07.22.2013

The Borderlands series has built a rabid fan base by providing a massive open world full of treasures to loot and enemies to fights. Even without add-on content, it's a massive game to explore, but developer 2K has piled on with four large packs of downloadable content to expand the world. Borderlands 2 is already an absurdly big game. But it can get bigger. 2K Games has announced a new batch of downloadable content for the game will be released in the fall. Along with the expected new levels and boss fights, gamers can also look forward to an increased level cap, from 61 to 72. While the DLC's themes haven't been announced yet the bar was raised considerably with the last release, Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep, which placed players in a Dungeons and Dragons-themed fantasy world. With assault rifles. Sadly this new downloadable content isn't available under the Season Pass that allowed players to purchase the first DLC packs at a discounted rate. Apparently the Season Pass only included the first four packs, which is fair given the amount of content those add-ons provided. While the Mac version of Borderlands 2 was released after the game hit PC and consoles, these new updates will be available for all platforms at the same time. We'll have more information as it becomes available.

Borderlands 2 will get a new DLC pack this fall, Gearbox announced at PAX Australia. The Ultimate Vault Hunter Upgrade Pack 2 will include the Digistruct Peak Challenge map and 11 levels. It also comes with a bumped level cap of 72, all for about $5. According to OXM, studio head Randy Pitchford said "two or three" additional "Headhunter Packs" for Borderlands 2 are also on the way, starting with T.K. Baha's Bloody Harvest, which sees the return of Borderlands character T.K. Baha, if the title didn't indicate as much. None of said DLC is included in the Season Pass, but is expected to launch by Halloween.

In a recent episode of the Nerdist podcast, Gearbox head Randy Pitchford said the studio isn't calling it quits on Borderlands 2 DLC. "We are going to do more, we are going to do some other things. I don't have details exactly of it yet cause we're not ready to announce what the other things are," Pitchford said around the one hour, nine-minute mark in the show. Gearbox has "more stuff in the hopper that we're planning and getting pretty excited about. So if you are a Borderlands 2 fan, you don't have to be afraid that that's the end of it." The latest DLC campaign for Borderlands 2, Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep, is the fourth and final component of the Borderlands 2 season pass. It places the original Vault Hunters from Borderlands in a tabletop role-playing session helmed by brash youth Tiny Tina.
