  • Report: Bourne game is Starbreeze's canceled EA project

Yesterday, we reported that one of two Starbreeze games being developed for EA had gone the way of the dodo. Now, the LA Times blog reports that the canceled game is in fact the title based on the Bourne franchise -- and not the believed Syndicate reboot, Project RedLime. This news doesn't eliminate the possibility for a new Bourne game sometime down the line, however. EA signed a ten-year deal with the Ludlum estate, and an EA spokesperson said, "EA and the Ludlum Estate are still discussing making a game based on the Bourne franchise."

A little backstory for those who aren't regular viewers of Jimmy Kimmel Live! -- at the conclusion of many early episodes, Kimmel would apologize for bumping Matt Damon due to time constraints, though almost always in jest. As the tabloids spun a web of rumors concerning a feud between Damon and the late night host, Kimmel's girlfriend Sarah Silverman appeared on the show and debuted a music video admitting she was, in fact, having an affair with Damon. Kimmel replied in kind.Guillermo Rodriguez is the show's actual parking lot security guard, and often serves as a celebrity gossip reporter -- he even bumped Damon from a few celebrity interviews, fueling the fake feud. In the above video, Kimmel reveals that the guard-turned-gossiper managed to bump Damon from his own video game: The Bourne Conspiracy. Sure, it's not exactly accurate, as Damon was never slated to fill Bourne's digital shoes, but the resulting gameplay footage is hilarious nonetheless.[Thanks, Steve.]

Despite our well-earned hesitancy about getting excited over a licensed game, we held out some hope for High Moon Studio's The Bourne Conspiracy. Maybe it was the kinetic energy of the trailers, or the company's insistence that they were putting a lot of thought into the game. Either way, we were ready to be hurt. But now that we're getting some of the first reviews we can see that our hopes for an above average game have not been dashed. Huzzah! GamePro (75/100): "The Bourne Conspiracy, which is loosely based on the events of the first movie, doesn't suck. In fact, it's pretty good. Sure, it's not a true blockbuster but it's not total garbage either." IGN AU (73/100): "A trifle repetitive and brief, The Bourne Conspiracy is a diamond in the rough. Well worth a look but it's not going to change your life. However there're two more films worth of material to adapt so maybe future Bourne adventures will give a little more control to the player and a little less to the button pressing mini-game." Game Informer (68/100): "Though The Bourne Conspiracy is weighed down by broken gunplay mechanics, its thrilling hand-to-hand combat, slick presentation, and relatively short time commitment (eight hours) make it a perfect rental for fans of the films."

It's finally here kids. Yes, it's the granddaddy of all ninja simulators, Ninja Gaiden. This particular entry in the series is somewhat anachronistically titled Ninja Gaiden II. We can tell you unreservedly (and from experience) that it is glorious in execution. It's also goriest in executions. Eviscerations abound as gamers take on the role of Ryu Hayabusa, the superest of all super ninjas. But wait, what's that? There are more games shipping this week and they don't all suck? Whoa. Imagine our surprise. Behold this week's list: Ninja Gaiden II GRID LEGO Indiana Jones Robert Ludlum's: The Bourne Conspiracy Kung Fu Panda Incredible Hulk Which of these will grace your 360's DVD drive?[Via Joystiq]%Gallery-22757%

A few hours ago, Xbox Live Marketplace was treated to an early demo of The Bourne Conspiracy, the High Moon Studios developed title based on the best-selling novels by Robert Ludlum. We thought this was a great time to debut a feature X3F readers have asked us for in the past, video impressions of demos for retail Xbox 360 games. Ordinarily we have a catchy (or what we think is catchy) name for our video features, but this time we drew a blank. Have an idea for what this feature should be called? Drop your name idea in the comments and tell us what you think of The Bourne Conspiracy demo yourself.Music Credit:"The Truth About These Outlaws" by Critical Mood[iTunes] Subscribe to X3F TV directly in iTunes.[Zune] Subscribe to the X3F TV directly (Zune Marketplace link coming soon).[RSS] Add the X3F TV feed to your RSS aggregator and have the show delivered automatically.[MP4] Download the MP4 directly.

Since we first saw the gameplay from The Bourne Conspiracy, we've held a secret hope that the game, despite its deficiency of Vitamin D(amon), would rise above the standard of mediocrity that has been set by so many licensed games before it. But today is the true test, as a hulking, 1.24 GB demo for the game has just arrived on Xbox Live Marketplace in Australia, New Zealand, India and North America (it's coming to Europe next week). So eager were we to pass the news along that we haven't given the demo a try yet. But we're anxiously awaiting word on it, so ... what's your verdict?

While the rest of us wait for the May 19 demo of Sierra's Bourne Conspiracy action title to hit Xbox Live, UK gamers can snag the demo today at their local GAME store. While picking up his copy of Grand Theft Auto IV one of our loyal X3F soldiers was given the demo for the anticipated game based on the best-selling novels by Robert Ludlum. We've been vocal on our interest in the game so color us green with envy from the early demo, at least until it finally lands on the Marketplace later this month.[Thanks, Rhemelious B.]

In case the above trailer wasn't enough for you, you'll find Bourne Conspiracy screenshots galore in our gallery below. The game looks like it'll play similarly to Uncharted thanks to its run-and-gun, duck-and-cover, punch-in-the-gut kind of gameplay. Don't expect to be brutally massacring zombies, or hunt treasure while cracking sly remarks. You're just kicking some tail. Hopefully, the game will be able to successfully translate what made the original novels (of which the game is based on) so fun.%Gallery-21779%

Earlier this month, High Moon Studios revealed that a punchy and limb breaking Bourne Conspiracy demo was planned for release to the XBLM sometime next month. Now, thanks to the magic of the internets and a what a few weeks time can bring, we can confirm via Eurogamer that the Bourne demo will be ready for download on Monday, May 19th. Exciting stuff that would be even more exciting if the franchise's main man Matt Damon was actually featured in the game ... SNAP!

  • New Bourne Conspiracy video is really punchy

    04.24.2008

GameTrailers has released a new gameplay video of The Bourne Conspiracy, one of the first to feature a non-stop section of pure gameplay (complete with a HUD this time). This video in particular shows off both the gunplay and melee combat of The Bourne Conspiracy and gives us some clues as to how it will all actually work. Thus far, Sierra has been keen to point out that the game would capture the brutal combat seen in the films, and what's on display in the video is definitely interesting. Looking at the video, it seems like most of the really brutal moves are initiated as reversals or counters to attacks from the enemy, triggering a brief cinematic attack from Bourne. Beyond that, it looks like the moves actually performed by the player are limited to a few basic punches. Of course, we won't know exactly how it works until we lay our hands on a controller and play it, so we'll reserve judgment until the announced demo arrives next month. In the meantime, give the video a look and share your thoughts in the comments.

Keep your eyes peeled, because Jason Bourne is coming to an Xbox Live Marketplace near you with confirmation from Vivendi that a Bourne Conspiracy demo is scheduled for release sometime in May. Possibly weeks before its June 3rd release. Though, take note that the demo is only scheduled for release to the U.S. XBLM as official confirmation for it to release to the European XBLM is still pending. Oh well, at least some violence-loving fanboys will be able to enjoy a hefty helping of Bourne next month.

"Are you Mr. Stern, by chance?" A built man in a black suit asked, standing in front of a black Cadillac. His black sunglasses evenly split M.I.B. and The Matrix.I'd just stumbled into the daylight after an afternoon meeting near San Francisco's Union Square. I'd been standing on the sidewalk for a moment, shifting my attention between my notebook, phone, and this man. I'd stolen glances like I was meeting a blind date, wondering if this was my contact but not quite approaching himI confirmed my identity, and he motioned me over to the sedan. "I'll be taking you to the drop zone," he said and then was silent.A few weeks earlier, FedEx dropped off an unmarked, prepaid mobile phone. The carbon-copy shipping slip gave no origin address or FedEx account number. I called the delivery company and asked for more details, and all they could dig up was the location the phone was picked up. Some place called "Vivendi University" according to the agent. And so the marketing stunt began.%Gallery-20464%

Sierra announced today that the upcoming book and film adaptation The Bourne Conspiracy will release on June 3 in North America. As discussed here before, the game features a mixture of hand-to-hand combat as well as run-and-gun action. We're sure gamers are interested in trying out the game or, as As Sierra's Al Simone puts it, "experience the dangerously exciting aura and frenetic pace inherent in the Bourne franchise." We'll see about that. It's worth noting that Bourne will be making his video game debut on the same day as Microsoft's flagship action, (Game of the Year) Ninja Gaiden II. So, demon slaying super ninja or elbow cracking super spy? Decisions, decisions ....[Via Press Release]

Against our better judgment, we've been getting progressively more excited for the non-Matt Damon, don't-call-it-a-movie-adaptation Bourne Conspiracy. We learned this morning that we'll figure out if we picked a winner or got bourned again when the game drops on June 3.We're happy that we're not going to have to wait to much longer, but it's also nice to see a major release in the heart of the summer. If only more publishers would realize that dropping a fun oasis into the summer desert could translate into a lot of extra attention (and dollars) for them.

Some new footage of The Bourne Conspiracy is up on GameTrailers showcasing some of the game's firearms. Anyone that has played a third person shooter in the last several years should be relatively familiar with the action that's present in this trailer. Dark environments: check. Cover system: check. A metal crate deflecting a helicopter's high caliber gunfire: check. One thing that's worth noting, however, is that the video shows no user interface whatsoever. There is no ammo gauge, no aiming reticle, no life meter, nothing. Whether this is indicative of the actual game or an example of developers removing the UI for the sake of a trailer, we'll have to wait and see (for what it's worth, none of the screenshots released thus far include a UI either). Now, if we can just get a trailer devoted to some Bourne-tastic, arm-breaking hand-to-hand combat, we'll be set.%Gallery-4286%

  • Bourne Conspiracy devs lament PS3's Unreal Engine problems

    03.14.2008

High Moon, the developers behind the upcoming book-gone-movie-gone-game title, The Bourne Conspiracy, is on the ever-growing list of teams struggling with the Unreal Engine and PS3. Their VP, Paul O'Connor, spoke to Gamasutra about PS3 and how the Unreal Engine was working out for them on the platform. He admitted: "We needed a lot of support on Unreal to make it run on the PlayStation 3. We got caught in the same crunch as everybody else when [Epic] finalized Gears Of War, so that definitely slowed down the PS3 support at the time."It's not all bad news, as he goes on to praise what the team has managed to do with the PS3 and says the game is about ready to go through the pipeline. High Moon had to use a lot of their own toolset, though, saying while the Unreal Engine 3 is a great toolset, for the PS3, they needed to bring out their own stuff as well. This problem has been plaguing many Unreal developers, and is at the root of a lawsuit brought on by Too Human developer, Silicon Knights.

While we continue to wonder how a licensed game can actually get us excited, we present to you the latest footage of Robert Ludlum's The Bourne Conspiracy. Released by Sierra Entertainment and High Moon Studios earlier in the week, the trailer shows off the seamless use of weapons and hand-to-hand content. There is however one concern, if you watch the trailer it appears that a portion of the gameplay will in the form of timed-button sequences (like Spider-man 3's cineratives). While we can't say for sure, the explanation of the Escape and Evade system makes us think that will be the approach the game will take. But we can't get too worried about a game that lets players take someone out with a book.
