ZTE C90, FCC, AWS CDMA, QWERTY, LOL, OMG

We normally associate AWS spectrum with T-Mobile's 3G efforts, but let's not forget that it also plays a big role in recent buildouts of the CDMA regionals; MetroPCS and Leap Wireless' Cricket brand both use 1700MHz bandwidth in a number of markets, and you'll find plenty of AWS support across their lineups to prove it. An interesting new QWERTY slider from ZTE bearing triband CDMA support (AWS included) just passed FCC testing, and if we had to guess, MetroPCS is the likely candidate to get it; the companies have been in bed for quite some time now, and it's no secret that they're collaborating on LTE gear going forward. It's not the best looking phone we've ever seen -- nor the best looking QWERTY slider -- but hey, we'll bet it's cheaper than the $249 Motorola Hint, especially since it steps down from a 2 megapixel cam to 1.3. No word on when we might see an announcement.

Asus reveals full specs for C90 customizable laptop

Those of us who cringe at paying bloated prices for the privilege of having our computers built by the Dells and HPs of the world have long been looking forward to ASUS' upcoming C90 barebones laptop: its so-called D-door design finally gives mobile users some of the same ability for customization that desktop modders have had for years. Well the fast-growing Taiwanese manufacturer has just revealed the full specs for this anticipated device, which we now know to support Core 2 Extreme processors up to the 2.93GHz X6800, up to 3GB of 800MHz DDR2 RAM, your choice of MXM-compatible graphics solutions, and whatever optical drives and storage space you happen to need. Still no word on a release unfortunately, although if we can believe an eBay seller already putting it up for preorder, we should be seeing the 15.4-inch, WSXGA+ C90 hit stores within the next few days for under a grand.

Asustek to show off gear aplenty at Computex

Asustek looks to be taking advantage of this week's big Computex trade show in Taipei to show of its latest round of "rock solid, heart touching" gear, which the folks at Infoworld has thankfully rounded up for us. As is often the case, not everything on display is entirely new, including the company's previously announced super-upgradeable C90 laptop, and its A33 "media player," which is actually more of a media center, packing a DVD burner, 320GB hard drive, dual channel TV tuner, Bluetooth, and 802.11n WiFi. Among the newer products are a pair of Internet radios, one of which, the Asustek Internet Radio 3 (AIR 3), boasts an iPod dock on the top, along with a USB port to let you play tunes off a USB stick. Look for it to set you back about $400 when it's released later this year, while the iPod-less AIR 1 radio will only run you $200. Also announced are a pair of 2 megapixel webcams, one with an autofocus lens and one without, costing $110 and $90, respectively. In addition to showing of its wares, Asustek's also talking a bit about some of its future plans, saying that it expects to launch its first high-definition disc player by the first quarter of 2008, which it says will "likely" be a Blu-ray device.

ASUS' C90S whitebook laptop: upgradeable everything

Not every mag has the option of hitting up the corporate headquarters for their hands-on shots. So check NotebookReview who managed to pull the C90S out their hat while tooling about the ASUS headquarters in Taiwan. Yup, that's their new ASmobile C90S barebone laptop up there which offers far more expansion options than your average bear. Everything -- we mean everything (according to ASUS) -- can be configured and later upgraded to your liking right on down to your choice of processor, MXM graphics, and 15.4-inch LCDs. Now get out of here kid and check the pics after the read link. We're not expecting this to ship until midish-Mayish but you'll need the time to convince your CIO that platform upgrades -- not leases -- are the way of the future.
