Avengers, assemble! In Super Hero Squad Online, that is. The fine folks at Gazillion Entertainment announced today that in order to celebrate the upcoming release of the much-anticipated Avengers film, the latest update to the free-to-play title will allow players to assemble the original Avengers team thanks to the introduction of Ant-Man and a new World-War-II-era costume for Captain America. As comic aficionados know, the original Avengers team (unlike the team featured in the upcoming film) consisted of Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, the Hulk, Ant-Man, and Wasp. Now that Ant-Man has joined the fray, the entire roster of original Avengers characters is now available in SHSO, and not a second too soon. The mischievous trickster-god Loki is back in business, and it's up to players to protect Baxter Plaza and the fallen remains of Asgard from his destructive antics. So what are you waiting for? Assemble your team and get to work; humanity is depending on you, heroes. [Source: Gazillion Entertainment press release]

Captain America: Super Soldier was your favorite game of 2011. You don't ask people to understand your choice, but there it is. Well, sorry to be the bearer of bad news, bud, but it seems Marvel and Sega have concluded their business partnership."There are no current plans for additional Marvel games to be published by Sega," VP of games production TQ Jefferson told Hollywood Reporter. And while he says that games is an important part of Marvel's business, the company will be looking elsewhere for game adaptations of its properties moving forward.

  • Sega game sales down in first half of fiscal 2012; Rise of Nightmares fails to hit the heights

The net sales for Sega Sammy's consumer division were down 13.7% year over year in the six months ended September 30. Sega brought in 33.4 million yen ($428,655) from its home game business, part of the 152.6 million yen in overall net sales. The 29.9% slump in company-wide net sales is mostly attributed to a slowdown in demand for new pachinko machines and "the settlement payment for patent licensing". Within the consumer business, Sega cited "weak" sales of its titles, especially in the west, which, Sega claims, continues to experience "headwinds such as sluggish personal consumption." Sega named three "major titles" released in the period, and detailed their sales. Captain America: Super Soldier, released only in the west, sold 450,000 units across four platforms. Rise of Nightmares sold 200,000 worldwide. The other major release, the Japan-only PSP soccer management sim Sakatsuku 7 Euro Plus, also sold 200,000.

Captain America: Super Soldier, which isn't too bad as it turns out, has seen its price significantly reduced on Amazon. The Xbox 360 and PS3 version can be had for $30, and the Wii version for $25. Try not to get too immersed -- if you throw the disc at something, it won't come back.

We're not exactly sure why the stars of Ubisoft's Raving Rabbids: Alive and Kicking would help promote Captain America -- especially since Sega produced the movie tie-in game -- but we'll accept most any excuse to see the Rabbids being silly.

Like baseball and apple pie, the wholesome beatdown of Nazis has been adopted as a symbol of American pride. Captain America has long delivered such blows on the comic pages, shield clanging off the craniums of bad guys like a gong sounding an end to tyranny. As it turns out, blunt force trauma can be pretty darn patriotic. Captain America: Super Soldier puts players in the red shoes of the titular hero and offers a chance to acrobatically smash an army of evil. And while this third-person adventure has a good share of thrills, there are flaws that keep the experience from living up to the Captain's exacting standards. %Gallery-126118%

With the Captain America film hitting theaters on July 22, it makes a lot of sense that the game will arrive around the same time -- July 19, actually, as revealed this morning by Sega. Alongside the new release date, Sega handed over several new screens of the Captain in action on Xbox 360/PlayStation 3, Nintendo DS, and Wii. There's also the totally sweet shot of Cap hanging out in an airplane -- straight chillin' -- as seen above. You just know that any second he's gonna totally flip out. Aaaaany second now ...%Gallery-119407%

  • Thor and Captain America to avenge in 3D on PS3, Xbox and (of course) 3DS

Sega is showing the Thor and Captain America games at an event for both Marvel properties, and is also tweeting news snippets out of said event. First off, games based on both Marvel movies will be released on 3DS. Second -- and this dovetails nicely -- the Xbox and PS3 versions will also be playable in 3D. No word yet about whether this will require a 3D television or if it'll be something like TriOviz that works on everything. Thor is currently slated for a May 11 release, with Captain America following sometime this summer.

Iron Man and Iron Man 2 haven't inspired much confidence in Sega's ability to make good Marvel games; however, its approach to Captain America: Super Soldier might just have a fighting chance. Why? It takes heavy inspiration from the comic game to beat: Batman Arkham Asylum. While the early, pre-Alpha preview we saw at New York Comic Con felt derivative, there are far worse games to aspire to. The comparisons between Super Soldier and Rocksteady's brawler will be immediately evident during combat. Like Batman, Captain America isn't a particularly fast fighter. Instead of relying on fast multi-hit combos, you'll perform heavy punches, and use enemies to your advantage. The Captain is quite adept at countering enemies, disarming them, and jumping over them. By timing your dodges correctly, you'll be able to string together various acrobatic moves around enemies, attacking them in context-sensitive ways. You can even throw the Shield, much like Batman would his Batarang. It looks almost entirely like the "FreeFlow" system implemented in Arkham Asylum. Combat isn't the only more-than-familiar facet of the game. Captain America has access to his very own version of "Detective Mode." Tactical Vision will paint the scene in a blue filter and will highlight important interactive objects throughout the environment. The psuedo cel-shaded look coupled with the color palette make no effort to hide its inspiration -- although developer Next Level Games assures us the current visual implementation is simply placeholder. %Gallery-104314%

Sega today confirmed work on its Captain America game, officially titled Captain America: Super Soldier, due in 2011 in conjunction with a feature film. Marvel is already in production on the Captain America and Thor movies due next year (in advance of Joss Whedon's 2012 Avengers flick), and Sega will also be handling the Thor game adaptation. Captain America is being developed at Next Level Games (Punch-Out!! Wii, Spider-Man: Friend or Foe) for PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, DS and PSP. A third-person action game, Super Soldier will bet set during World War II and will see Cap facing off against his nemesis, Red Skull, within the walls of a castle turned Hydra base. Sega is touting a "highly athletic combat system with fluid platforming and a highly tuned suite of shield attacks," mentioning that the iconic offensive weapon will be used for "taking out multiple enemies at once, deflecting incoming fire back at enemies, solving puzzles, and scaling walls." The game's story is penned by Christos Gage and is set "within the same world" as the movie.%Gallery-104314%%Gallery-104316%

It wasn't clear when Sega would be bringing its previously announced Thor and Captain America games to market, though we assumed they'd arrive alongside the films starring the iconic characters. Marvel has confirmed our suspicions in an earnings report this morning, saying that Thor and Cap will come to consoles in May and July of 2011 respectively, the same points they're set to appear on the big screen. Since we know practically nothing about these games, we decided that, in true internet fashion, this would be the absolute best time to pick which one is better. Excelsior! %Poll-36410%

  • Disney's Marvel buyout won't affect Sega superhero games

Yesterday's news that Disney was buying Marvel Entertainment to the toon tune of $4 billion raised questions about games based on the comic book powerhouse's licenses. One of these has been answered by Sega, which is currently working on three announced Marvel tie-ins: Iron Man 2, Thor and Captain America. The word from on top? "At this time there are no changes to Sega's existing licensing agreement for [those] videogame titles," Sega told GI.biz. In addition, the publisher indicated that it would be teaming with Disney and Marvel (Misney? Darvel?) on "future ventures." One thing at a time, folks ... one thing at a time. It's probably best to focus on the here and now; after all, we all remember how the first Iron Man game turned out.

  • Sega picks up rights to Hulk, Captain America, Thor

A limited number of the Avengers assemble! It may lack the punch of the standard battle cry, but it seems to be the one on Sega's lips as they add The Hulk, Thor and Captain America to their character roster. What unites these three characters? Are there a handful of designers at Sega with a bold vision to bring these favorites to life on consoles ... or could it be that all three are the subject of forthcoming blockbuster films? Well, Reuters says that Sega's already got a team on The Hulk in anticipation of the June 2008 film starring Edward Norton, if that helps narrow it down. Sega is already creating an Iron Man game internally for consoles in conjunction with the Robert Downy Jr. flick due out next year and Reuters reports that the game is being made "using next-generation technology," so it should be an instant classic. We're anxious to see what Sega does with the heroes, but allow us to make one small suggestion: Wiimote + Thor's hammer = funtastic. That's all we're saying.
