Still-nascent GameStop CFO Catherine Smith, enticed by a retail giant that makes the games business look like small change, has resigned. The company this morning issued a press release stating that, effective immediately, Robert Lloyd has been named CFO and senior vice president in Smith's stead. Brown is said to have become a person of Walmart International, but even with her gone, CEO Daniel DeMatteo remains confident in the current "strong executive team" in place, also noting that her replacement, Robert Lloyd, has been a part of GameStop for 14 years now. "He has been instrumental in guiding the company through its tremendous growth and success." We might argue that the company hasn't seen too many lean years in its lifetime, but let's not bother with that right now. It's your special day, Mr. Lloyd. Live it up.

You might recall that, back in September, Linden Lab CEO Mark Kingdon and the Lab's director of Marketing and Communications Catherine Smith took a trip to Amsterdam, where it was revealed that they were seeking space for a new marketing headquarters for Linden Lab. Well, the new office isn't open yet – that's coming in January – but Ms Smith has already relocated to Amsterdam, which actually made her a bit easier to catch up with for a talk about the new digs and new initiatives.

Over the last few days, Linden Lab CEO Mark Kingdon, and Lab director of Marketing and Communications, Catherine Smith have been in Europe, where Kingdon is reportedly seeking office-space for Linden Lab in Amsterdam. The office is intended to start as a small marketing headquarters for Linden Lab. At NIMK, Catherine Smith told De Hoeksteen Live! that Linden Lab was planning to launch the new office in January next year. Linden Lab's marketing efforts for Second Life hitherto have largely focused on placement of speakers at conferences and events, and – prior to 2008 – on minor registration incentive programs. More recently, efforts have focused on the revamped Web-site and assorted press-materials and white-papers.

Starting today, a number of prominent Second Life bloggers are on strike for three full days in protest at Linden Lab's sudden detrimental change of position on the use of current and new trademarks. These bloggers feel snubbed and threatened by the new brand guidelines, which they find contradictory, excessive and potentially restrictive to free speech, and are going on a symbolic three-day strike as a gesture to show that they do not find Linden Lab's answers to these concerns sufficient.

In a search lasting nearly 12 months, Linden Lab has finally hired a Communications Manager. Linden Lab originally announced the search for a Second Life Resident Communications Manager in early May 2007, but the blog posting announcing the position was silently removed some months later. You would hardly know the position had been filled, if you weren't reading closely.

No, that's not a typo. It's Sciamachy Moran's rather clever play on words to describe how he feels about Linden Lab's new brand center and the new inSL trademark program. We've spent the last couple days catching up with Second Life users in-world, and checking out what they have to say on their blogs and assorted forums. There are people saying positive things about the change. We counted only eleven positive comments among the mass of material.

Catherine Linden (Catherine Smith) is doing a new Linden Lab podcast called Inside Linden Lab. The first episode features Philip Rosedale, CEO of Linden Lab. During the course of the 'cast, Rosedale does specifically contradict Gene Yoon by consistently referring to the economy, where Yoon has previously insisted no such economy in Second Life exists.
