Mortal Kombat series creator Ed Boon had a special treat for fans at this year's EVO event; the return of Raiden in Mortal Kombat X. According to an interview between Boon and IGN, the infamous thunder god will be screaming gibberish at his opponents in three distinct styles, tentatively being called "Displacer," "Storm Lord" and "Thunder God" respectively. Displacer style will focus heavily on teleportation, while Thunder God will empower Raiden's electrocution moveset. Storm Lord will help players control large portions of the stage, as it allows Raiden to set lightning ball traps which hang in the air and form a stream of lightning once two of them have been placed. You can see Raiden in action by checking out the trailer above, where he and Kotal Khan stare each other down before Raiden offers up this gem of a burn: "Thunder blots out the sun." Which isn't ... uh ... correct. Well, no one ever said he was the smartest god. [Image: Warner Bros.]

League of Legends will be getting a new champion and game mode, developer Riot Games has announced. The new game mode, Hexakill, adds another player to each team, turning the game's typical 5v5 match into a 6v6 affair. Hexakill is part of Riot's featured gameplay modes, where players can experience experimental twists on the usual LoL formula. This also means, however, that Hexakill will only be available to play for a limited time, from February 20 to March 2. Meanwhile, if League of Legends' next champion were in your yearbook, he'd be the kid that was always a little too into the dissection labs in Biology class. Vel'Koz, Eye of The Void, is a tentacled horror that comes to the Fields of Justice from a dimension known as The Void, where it exists as a living font of knowledge and learning. Oh, and he's here to destroy you. So yeah, just like that kid.

  • Report: Ultra Street Fighter 4's fifth mystery character tied to comics

An undisclosed source has reportedly given Siliconera a hint about the fifth, mystery fighter to join the Ultra Street Fighter 4 cast. That hint: this character can be seen in one of the Street Fighter comic series. Quick, to the comic book store! Shoryuken speculates that the unannounced fighter could be Sarai Kurosawa, friend to series veteran Ibuki. She meets the criteria for hints dropped thus far and had a cameo appearance in Street Fighter X Tekken, which is where the previous four Ultra Street Fighter 4 cast additions most recently appeared. Still, nothing's certain yet, so anything at this point is really just a guess. Hopefully we'll know more before Ultra Street Fighter 4 beats us to a pulp in June.

The complete roster for WWE 2K14's 30 Years of WrestleMania mode was announced earlier today by legendary WWE commentators Jim Ross and Jerry "The King" Lawler, during an appropriately dramatic and (Ric) flair-filled press event held at this weekend's WWE SummerSlam AXXESS event in Los Angeles. The roster, listed in its entirety after the break, is made up of 33 wrestlers, 10 of which have "Retro" variants, bringing the entire cast of characters up to 43 unbelievably giant, sweaty men. Highlights of the list include relatively recent personalities such as The Rock, CM Punk and John Cena, as well as classic competitors such as Bret "The Hitman" Hart, Mick Foley, Ric Flair and Goldberg. It's worth noting that these wrestlers have been announced specifically for the 30 Years of WrestleMania mode, and that 2K Sports has yet to divulge which will also be available for use in the game's other modes.

  • Persona 4 Arena arcade-only update adds new fighters, moves, system changes

The Japan-only arcade version of Persona 4 Arena (known as Persona 4: The Ultimate in Mayonaka Arena) is being updated with two new characters, significantly updated gameplay mechanics and new abilities for the existing fighters. Currently, there is no plan for any of these changes to come to the console versions, either here or in Japan: "It's an arcade-only update," Atlus' John Hardin told us. "No plans to bring it to the U.S. at this time." Yukari Takeba and Junpei Iori of Persona 3 fame return as new combatants, bringing the game's overall roster up to 15 selectable Persona users. The update also adds a new "Shadow Type" system, according to Shoryuken's translation of Famitsu's hands-on report. This gives players the option of replacing the game's "One More Burst" mechanic with an alternate Shadow form, which grants temporarily unlimited special meter and augmented/enhanced attack properties. Additionally, Shadow Type characters bring their special meters with them to the next round, whereas historically special meter resets at the beginning of each fight. An "S Hold System" is also being added, which allows players to charge up certain special attacks to achieve augmented effects, such as invulnerability. It will also now be possible to cancel normal moves into hops, which will add more utility for combo crafting. Furthermore, the game's existing cast is being outfitted with new moves and abilities, an ongoing list of which can be found here. Location testing is underway at Taito Hey in Akihabara and Taito Station Nipponbashi in Osaka, from now through this Sunday. We're keeping our ear to the ground for further information about when this update will be released, and whether it'll garner it's own name, ala Super Street Fighter 4: Arcade Edition, or Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus R.

  • Zatanna is the next Injustice: Gods Among Us DLC character

Well that was quick! It's barely been a week since Martian Manhunter began floating around the war-torn, interactive stages of Injustice: Gods Among Us, and NetherRealm Studios has already announced the game's next DLC character: Zatanna Zatara. What's more, Zatanna is being released next Tuesday, August 13, for 400 MS Points/$5 on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, respectively. As always, the announcement made no mention of Zatanna's potential/eventual availability on the Wii U version of the game. Zatanna's in-game abilities appear appropriately magical, with her playstyle seemingly split between melee rushdown and top hat/wand-based zoning. We find it interesting that NetherRealm decided to base her look off of her classic appearance, rather than her New 52 regalia, since the majority of characters in Injustice have taken their design cues from DC's current generation. Who knows, though – maybe her alternate costume has some pants.

  • SMITE wises up with Athena

How many gods are left in the universal pantheon for Hi-Rez Studios to exploit for SMITE? We guess at least one more because the team has patched in Athena, goddess of wisdom. Athena is a melee tank who uses a bit of magic to help her allies and herself out in a fight. While she primarily relies on shield and spear, her passive ability gives her a ranged attack after using a skill. She also can dash up to (and through) enemies, taunt with a shockwave, summon ghost soldiers to form a shield wall, and teleport to an ally while protecting that ally from 50% of damage for a short time. You can check out the Athena reveal, including her lore and abilities, in the video after the break!

  • Injustice: Gods Among Us adds Black Adam to character roster

As if any superhero could exist in a fighting game without his or her perennial antagonist to become embattled against, Shazam's ancient Egyptian arch-enemy, Black Adam, has been revealed as a playable character in Injustice: Gods Among Us.As seen in the solitary screenshot above, Black Adam shares Shazam's lightning-bolt motif, which makes sense considering that they were both given their powers by the same wizard, who was also named "Shazam." Additionally, Black Adam has to say "Shazam!" in order to activate his magical powers, which embody aspects of the Egyptian gods Shu, Heru, Amon, Zehuti, Aton and Mehen, or S.H.A.Z.A.M. Comic books, everybody.

  • Injustice: Gods Among Us' latest character reveal is so Raven

    03.14.2013

News of a new costumed adventurer confirmed as an Injustice: Gods Among Us combatant feels like a semi-daily occurrence lately -- a trend that continues with this morning's affirmation of Raven as a playable character in NetherRealm Studios' new fighter. As seen in her debut trailer (once available here, since vanished), Raven's abilities are just as floaty and mystical as one would expect, with quick, swiping melee attacks and what appears to be an alternate/evil stance with limited teleportation capabilities. Raven's big, scary, four-eyed father also makes a brief appearance during her fittingly insane super, and if you're familiar enough with her story to know his name, you're also familiar enough to be upset about her outfit and chin.

  • Doomsday confirmed for Injustice, Superman suddenly remembers a bunch of stuff he needs to go do

Doomsday, the ancient, artificially engineered monstrosity responsible for the "death" of Superman (among hundreds of thousands of others) has been confirmed as a playable character in NetherRealm Studio's forthcoming Injustice: Gods Among Us.Previously, Doomsday was spotted in the background of Superman's Fortress of Solitude stage, though his status as an actual character remained ambiguous. As seen in the video above, Doomsday's main ability appears to be getting completely stomped on by Captain Marvel Shazam, at least until Doomsday punches him through the entire planet and back, quite literally.

NetherRealm Studios creative director Ed Boon has revealed Killer Croc as the latest confirmed addition to Injustice: Gods Among Us' roster of playable heroes and villains. No further details have been released aside from the above screenshot, though we feel safe in assuming that Croc will fall into Injustice's stable of power-oriented characters, rather than its gadget-focused cast.Riddler and Penguin, two additional previously unannounced characters, are also seen in the above screenshot, though whether they themselves are playable remains to be seen -- it's possible that they are part of that stage's interactive elements. We have a special place in our hearts for good ol' Croc, which you can discover after the break.

  • Mew-Genics to hoard over 12 sextillion cats

    12.01.2012

Team Meat's latest teaser for Mew-Genics is all about the game's "cast of cats," in that it features over 12,207,031,250,000,000,000,000 felines. The developer blog explains that the enormous number "only applies to how the cat looks, if you include its personality variables that number multiplies by A LOT."Team Meat added that "ability variables and personal stats" could practically guarantee that you'll never get the same cat twice in the game. Not that we know what that entails, since all we really know about Mew-Genics is that it's "kind of" about cats. Lots of them.

Tracy, the fourth character Team Meat revealed for its upcoming game Mew-Genics, was described as a girl that "likes cats... but isn't a big fan of you." Tracy's teaser image showed the wall of cages she seemed to keep her cats in, hopefully insinuating that she's a vet and not a hoarder.Team Meat unveiled a few characters over the past few weeks for its "game about cats," including Frank (who has head problems), Mr. Tinkles and Dr. Beanies. Another character reveal is planned for next Caturday.
