At the end of December, the Massively staff laid out its predictions for 2013 in a tidy post, after which a reader named flatline4400 graciously complimented our wild conjecture: I think Bree and Patrick are right on in a number of points. (Bree also did very well in last year's predictions too!) We are pretty awesome, aren't we? Well, except for the part where I also predicted City of Heroes 2. Soooooo maybe not so awesome after all. In today's Ask Massively, let's take a peek back at our staff predictions from last year, the ones we made in 2011 for 2012. And let's count the hits and the misses. Did we get as much right as we got wrong? Come on -- it'll be fun(ny).

  • A Mild-Mannered Reporter: City of Heroes 2

Before the comments light up, I'm just going to say outright that City of Heroes 2 does not currently exist. We've heard no news about it, no announcements, nothing beyond the speculation of many City of Heroes players such as myself. I'm deviating (again) from the set schedule and talking about a purely hypothetical sequel that all of us are kind of expecting but that does not, at this point, exist. But considering all of the recent talk about Guild Wars 2, I think it's apropos. Let's assume, for the purpose of this article, that Paragon Studios is knee-deep in development of City of Heroes 2 and simply isn't telling anyone. What sort of things would the game need? What would be the best possible route for the game to take? How could it satisfy fans of City of Heroes while drawing in new players? I don't have the absolute answers... but it sure does make for some interesting speculation, based on the things the team has been doing over the past several years.

Welcome to this week's installment of A Mild-Mannered Reporter, where we will not be talking about Going Rogue. Well, OK, that's a lie -- but we're not going to be doing our big analysis and in-depth look at the entire expansion. As of the time I'm writing these words, I've not actually even played the game. (This will have changed by the time you are reading the article, but that's the wonderful part about writing ahead. I'm sending messages to the future from the past!) So while there are going to be several community threads for City of Heroes in this column, there will not be any of the biting commentary you might have hoped to see. You can at least check out my first impressions of the expansion, if you'd like -- which also isn't written as of the time that I'm writing this, but will be by the time you read it. (Editor's note: Eliot's first impressions of Going Rogue launched Tuesday.) You know what, just jump past the break already -- I'm giving myself a Lost headache thinking about all the time travel.

This week's edition of the MMO Report hits the highlights of a busy week around the MMOsphere, and host Casey Schreiner is in fine form, particularly when he gives a shout out to Massively and our sister site WoW.com. After those two show-stopping highlights, you'll find news and commentary on Free Realms' first birthday bash, tidbits about Sony's The Agency, race and clan information for Square-Enix's forthcoming Final Fantasy XIV, and a dose of reader humor courtesy of Uncle Casey's Mailbag. Oh and don't forget the mention of NCSoft's City of Heroes II (or is it 2)? Check out this week's MMO Report after the jump, or visit our archive and our friends at G4TV.

  • NCSoft registers trademark for City of Heroes 2

MMO developer NCSoft's plans for sequelization aren't limited to a Guild Wars follow-up, it seems. Superannuation recently dug up a pair of trademarks for "City of Heroes 2" filed by the studio on April 1. As with all video game trademarks, it's possible NCSoft is just reserving the name and may not have plans for a sequel at this time. Alternatively, the company might just be pulling an extremely discrete April Fools' Day joke, though it already pulled that off with the recent announcement of City of Sidekicks. We've contacted NCSoft to see what we can find out.

  • NCsoft trademarks City of Heroes 2

A little over a year ago, Massively's Kyle Horner took a look at the possibility of City of Heroes 2 in The Digital Continuum. He investigated some of what NCsoft has done before and gave several reasons why it would make sense for them to move in that direction eventually. There was a fair amount of skepticism, but it looks like Kyle may have called it. Eurogamer reported today that NCsoft has trademarked the "City of Heroes 2" name. Now this is certainly not anything resembling a commitment to make the game, but it opens the door to the possibility. NCsoft could be planning to start working on the game soon, or they could just as easily be guarding against future shenanigans from those not affiliated with the game. NCsoft had this to say: "City of Heroes is a flourishing franchise and continues to be the world's most popular super-powered hero MMO. While we cannot comment on City of Heroes 2 at this time, NCsoft is proud of City of Heroes' success and is looking forward to future product launches associated with the franchise, including the City of Heroes Going Rogue expansion scheduled for release this July." For now, we'll try not too speculate too much, and look forward to Going Rogue.

A surprisingly large amount of people didn't believe me at all when I said something to watch out for in 2009 was an announcement for City of Heroes 2. In fact, pretty much everyone has disagreed with me here. That's fine, but they're all wrong, and in this week's Digital Continuum I'll explain why I think as much.
