<p>Although <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/04/25/google-drive-lets-teams-add-friends-start-chats-easily/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Google Drive</a> has spread far and wide, its localization hasn't always kept pace. The service just took a few needed strides forward, however, with the addition of 18 new languages. Asia gets the most recognition with support for Hong Kong Chinese, Khmer, Lao, Malaysian, Nepali, Persian, Sinhalese and Urdu. Not that Google is neglecting other corners of the world, mind you: Africa is well covered with the additions of Afrikaans, Amharic, Swahili and Zulu, while Europeans get some TLC through support for Basque, Estonian, Galician and Icelandic. French Canadians and Spanish-speaking Latin Americans get localizations, too. Google Drive still isn't tuned for every language on Earth, but those with cloud storage in Cape Town or Kuala Lumpur should feel at home.</p>

<p>These days, the danger of a stolen PC resides less in local files and more in cloud access -- presumably, no one wants to share their online storage with a thief. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/02/15/sugarsync-2-0-now-official-with-drag-and-drop-sharing/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">SugarSync's</a> paid subscribers won't have to worry, as the company just rolled out a remote wipe option. Customers now just have to sign in through the web to purge a Mac or Windows system of both its shared files and any active logins. A wipe target doesn't have to be online when the purge starts, either. The new failsafe won't help if an evildoer moves data elsewhere, but we'll gladly take what extra security we can get.</p>

<p>As great as free server space is for us regular folk, businesses use <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/cloudstorage/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">cloud storage</a> too (<i>and</i> they actually pay for it). In an effort to attract the attention of mobile app developers, and ultimately keep enterprise clients happy, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/box?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Box</a> has launched a revenue-sharing program called $rev for those who create business-focused software integrated with its cloud storage platform. It's pretty simple, really. Step one: get your app to play nice with Box; step two: people use the app; step three: make it rain. By getting an app into Box's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/28/box-onecloud-ipad-ios-document-editing-video/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">OneCloud</a> club and enrolling in the $rev program, devs can net up to 15 percent of the "per seat price" in rewards. Although its API is <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/26/box-releases-new-api-for-developers-announces-15-more-onecloud/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">already available</a>, Box has launched iOS and Android SDKs in tandem with $rev to make the integration step a bit easier; more SDKs are expected in the "coming weeks." The $rev scheme is currently in a closed beta phase, but it'll open up in the near future. Interested app crafters can learn more about getting paid by Box, download the SDKs and sign up to $rev at the source links below.</p>

<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/lenovo/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Lenovo's</a> getting into the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/cloud/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">cloud storage</a> game, but rather than dive straight in, the company's taking a tiptoe approach. Starting today, curious consumers can sign up to preview the company's cloud service, dubbed Reach, which offers exactly what you'd expect: remote access to 5GB worth of stored files and applications from any device, be it Android, iOS or Windows. The actual beta won't be open until June 22nd, at which point only a select few will be able to test drive the new service and provide Lenovo with feedback. Depending on how smoothly things go, an official launch for all comers should be announced sometime "later this year." But with so many other free cloud storage options already available and so many consumers already tethered to those clouds, Reach could find itself overextended.</p>

<p>Box just recently snapped up <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/09/box-buys-crocodoc-gains-html5-document-converter-and-viewer/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Crocodoc</a> to improve the web component of its cloud storage, but what about tuning the native apps? It's addressing that side of the equation by acquiring the technology behind Folders, a third-party cloud storage app for iOS. Box loves Folders' code and design enough to want both of them inside the next generation of its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/28/box-onecloud-ipad-ios-document-editing-video/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">iOS client</a>. Folders creator Martin Destagnol (pictured here at center) has already been working on this for weeks, Box says. While there's no word on a similar treatment for Android, we should see the iOS partnership bear fruit in updates spread throughout the year.</p>

<p class="image-container" style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/22/amazon-cloud-drive-reaches-canada/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img alt="Amazon Cloud Drive" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/10/amazon-cloud-drive.jpg" /></a></p>

<p>While Amazon Cloud Drive has been on quite the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/27/amazon-cloud-drive-arrives-UK/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">world</a> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/04/amazon-cloud-drive-in-spain-and-italy/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">tour</a> as of late, Canadians have had to watch as seemingly everyone else gets the storage service first. Thankfully, Canucks can now do more than just twiddle their thumbs now that Cloud Drive has gone live in their country. Pricing is virtually on par with what Americans know, with a 5GB free tier and multiple paid tiers that start at $10 per year for 20GB. All the Cloud Drive-focused <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/02/amazon-cloud-drive-desktop-app/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">desktop</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/01/amazon-cloud-drive-photos-android-app/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">mobile</a> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/25/amazon-cloud-drive-photos-android-update/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">apps</a> are now available as well. Cloud Player isn't an option when Amazon MP3 is still missing, but the expansion should otherwise give Canadians at least a small taste of what they've been missing in Amazon's online world.</p>

<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/13/skydrive-update-photo-timeline/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img alt="SkyDrive update brings photo timeline, " data-src-height="432" data-src-width="619" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/05/skydrive.jpg" /></a></p>

<p>Perhaps to celebrate <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/07/skydrive-celebrates-250-million-users/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">passing</a> the 250 million user mark, SkyDrive is rolling out an update which introduces some nifty time-saving features. Now, you'll be able to view all your photos -- across folders and albums -- in a timeline view, with images grouped by event and date for easy searching. There are also filmstrip and slideshow modes, and, according to Microsoft's <em>Inside SkyDrive </em>blog, photo-upload times have been improved at least twofold. The update brings a few other goodies too: full-resolution camera uploads for all Windows Phone 8 devices worldwide, and new thumbnails for PowerPoint and Word files. The update will begin rolling out today and should make its way to all users within 48 hours.</p>

<p>Google's efforts to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/10/google-babel-to-become-hangouts-chat-system/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">streamline</a> aren't limited to some <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/13/google-drops-sms-search/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">spring</a> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/13/google-reader-shut-down-spring-cleaning/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">cleaning</a> and more <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/07/google-maps-redesign-leak/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">spartan</a> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/04/09/google-play-store-4-0-redesign-rolling-out-to-android-phones-and/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">interfaces</a>. Today the company is breaking down the artificial walls between the pools of online storage provided for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/02/gmail-lets-us-directly-add-google-calendar-events/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Gmail</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/06/google-drive-app-file-sharing/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Drive</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/02/27/google-plus-photos-app-new-screenshots/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Google+ Photos</a>. Instead of 10GB for all your messages and attachments, alongside a separate 5GB repository for your photos and documents, now all three sites share a common 15GB slice on Google's servers. So, if you happen to be a little photo crazy, but are nowhere near the limit on your Gmail account, you no longer need to rely on workarounds like archiving images as attachments. This also means that storage upgrades for Gmail no longer top out at 25GB. There's also a handy new visualization that shows how much of your available storage you're using and breaks it down by service for finer-grained tracking.</p>

<p><strong>Update</strong>: If you're a Google Apps customer your available cloud storage will also be unified, leaving you with 30GB shared between all three services.</p>

<p>Google Drive may be playing <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/06/google-drive-app-file-sharing/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">catch-up to its competitors</a> in some ways, but the cloud storage team in Mountain View is forging ahead in others. Today, Big G announced a 'Save to Drive' button that allow users to save content directly from websites to Google-fied cloud lockers. Adding the button's easy, as it only requires a few lines of HTML, and a JavaScript API allows web admins to control their behavior. Folks looking to take advantage of the new button can learn more about it on the Google Developers portal, and as for the rest of us, we'll just enjoy the fruits of your labor.</p>

<p>Microsoft's celebrating a rather important milestone for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/02/microsoft-finishes-migrating-hotmail-users-to-outlook-com/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">SkyDrive</a>: 250 million users, with 50 million of those signing up in just the last seven months since the debut of Windows 8. With the cloud storage service being so tightly integrated into Microsoft's new OS, it's no surprise that its popularity has started to skyrocket. And, with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/15/skydrive-gains-selective-syncing-and-right-click-sharing/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">recent</a> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/04/17/two-step-verification-starts-rolling-out-for-microsoft-accounts/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">upgrades</a> to the platform, it's becoming an increasingly viable alternative to competitors like <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/02/dropbox-2-2-for-ios/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Dropbox</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/04/25/google-drive-offline-update/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Google Drive</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/04/05/box-for-android-update/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Box</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/04/16/sugarsync-for-ios-update/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">SugarSync</a>. To commemorate the milestone, Microsoft has a nice self-congratulatory infographic at the source filled with all sorts of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/02/08/skydrive-billion-office-files-edit-without-login/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">fun stats</a> about Redmond and its favored file-syncing system.</p>

<p>While there's an abundance of cloud storage services, few of them have dedicated conferences to help developers exploit that online space. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/02/dropbox-2-2-for-ios/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Dropbox</a> could well be a vanguard on that front, then -- it just announced its inaugural developer conference, DBX. The initial event takes place on July 9th at San Francisco's very <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/22/the-after-math-engadget-expand-special/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">familiar-sounding</a> Fort Mason Center. Along with providing help straight from the source for the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/02/06/dropbox-announces-sync-api-for-android-and-ios/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Sync API</a> and other coding tools, DBX will serve as the launch platform for "new products." There aren't any clues as to what that entails, but we suspect that's enough of a tease to have some Dropbox diehards booking their flights.</p>

<p>Android-based Dropbox users got a crack at an even more <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/12/dropbox-update-for-android-brings-fast-public-photo-album-sharing/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">photo-centric interface</a> back in January; it's now the iOS crowd's turn to play. Dropbox 2.2 for their platform makes it easier for them to see their photos, organize them into albums and share them with others. The corporate set will also want the update now that it permits the single sign-ons that make <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/04/10/dropbox-for-teams-becomes-dropbox-for-business/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Dropbox for Business</a> tick. Version 2.2 isn't the most dramatic update we've seen, but it should go some distance toward pleasing both shutterbugs and the suits.</p>

<p>When Microsoft <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/02/19/outlook-dot-com-out-of-preview-60-million-active-users/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">took Outlook.com public</a>, it also took on the rather daunting task of moving 300 million-plus Hotmail accounts over to the more modern infrastructure without drawing our wrath. However you feel about the new interface, that transition is at last complete: Outlook.com is now the sole front end for the over 400 million people who use Microsoft's free email services. Both Hotmail.com addresses and Hotmail Plus accounts will keep working despite the switch, the company says.</p>

<p>To mark the occasion, Microsoft is launching two significant upgrades. It's adding tighter <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/02/08/skydrive-billion-office-files-edit-without-login/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">SkyDrive</a> integration that lets users attach files directly from their SkyDrive accounts, including optimized photo attachments. Those who rely on email aliases will also like that Microsoft has finally let us choose an SMTP server to send messages from non-Outlook addresses without revealing the true source -- we won't have to put up with "on behalf of" tags any longer. Both features are rolling out today.</p>

Toshiba is as baffled as we are, so it's launching its Canvio Connect portable drive with handheld access in mind. While the USB 3.0 disk has no built-in networking of its own, a software bundle for Macs and PCs (we've confirmed that it's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/21/dnp-pogoplug-lets-drobo-into-its-cloud-offers-10gb-of-public/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Pogoplug</a>) lets travelers back up photos and videos from their Android and iOS devices, reach the drive's files through the internet and partake in 10GB of free cloud storage. The new Canvio can also serve as a traditional external drive for computers, although it's still improved in that space when the enclosure is about a third shorter than that of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/26/toshiba-outs-new-canvio-3-0-portable-hdds-extends-usb-3-0-to/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">its predecessors</a>. Toshiba expects the mobile-savvy Connect to arrive in mid-May at prices ranging from $99 for a 500GB model through to $190 for a 2TB version.</p>

Western Digital thinks some cloud integration of its own will get us looking at its new, standalone WD SmartWare Pro app. While the client can automatically back up file changes to a local drive as they happen, it can also schedule backups to both the drive and a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/04/11/dropbox-six-languages-app-update/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Dropbox</a> account. The extra-cautious can backup that Dropbox account to the external disk, and the whole affair isn't limited to the company's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/13/wd-mybook-studio-usb3/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">MyBook</a> drives, either; just about any old USB storage will do. It will cost a minimum of $30 ($20 on sale) for a three-computer SmartWare Pro license, but those who want both physical and cloud-based safety nets might consider the money well-spent.</p>

Today, though, the cloud-based storage service is releasing a new version of its application for Apple devices that brings a fair bit to the table. Chief among the improvements is a completely redesigned UI that, according to the company, aims to provide a more consistent experience across all the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/04/sugarsync-brings-autosync-technology-to-videos/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">apps it currently offers</a>.</p><p style="text-align: left;"> iPod touch, iPhone <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/23/sugarsync-3-0-hits-the-ipad-with-revamped-interface/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">and iPad</a> users will also now see a new feature which allows any saved file on SugarSync to be searched from within the app, while "Open In" integrates deeply with the OS to make it easier to open / save docs via other services. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/sugarsync/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">SugarSync</a> is also quick to point out that there are many more iOS features in the works (such as labels for folders), but we'll have to wait until a future release for those.</p>

Now called Dropbox for Business, it's pitched more directly at the suit-and-tie set. There's more than just talk involved in the new strategy, though. The shift also sees Dropbox build in identity management from five providers so that Dropbox users don't have to sign into the service if they're already logged in elsewhere: they can hop on to the corporate <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/19/how-your-company-will-control-your-windows-rt-tablet/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Active Directory</a> service, for example and have Dropbox ready for action soon after. We doubt that the new moves by themselves will sway IT managers, but they may help would-be users who've been on the fence.</p>

Today Yahoo! announced a partnership that puts the pioneering storage service right in your inbox. Yahoo! <p class="image-container" style="text-align: center;"> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/04/01/amazon-cloud-drive-file-syncing/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img alt="DNP Amazon steps its game up, adds file sync to Cloud Drive" data-src-height="400" data-src-width="619" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/04/screen-shot-2013-04-01-at-12.25.19-pm.jpg" /></a></p><p> After nearly a year on the market, Amazon has finally blessed its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/02/amazon-cloud-drive-desktop-app/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Cloud Drive apps for Windows and Mac</a> with a file syncing folder. Starting today, users can access their documents, music and photos across multiple computers -- a feature that we've seen from the likes of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/googledrive/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Google Drive</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/dropbox/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Dropbox</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/skydrive/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">SkyDrive</a> for quite some time. While this feature is far from groundbreaking, it does manage to make Amazon's service a respectable alternative to cloud storage's reigning heavy hitters. Toss in its 5GB of free storage and Cloud Drive could become a worthy contender for those who are looking for a new or additional place to house their digital collections.</p>

<p class="image-container" style="text-align: center;"> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/31/world-backup-day-2013/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img alt="It's World Backup Day no time like the present to protect the past" data-src-height="336" data-src-width="500" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/03/world-backup-day-2013.jpg" /></a></p><p> There are two kinds of computer owners: those that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/backup/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">backup</a> their data, and those who will backup after they <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/dataloss/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">lose something</a> irreplaceable. It's that last group for whom <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/31/world-backup-day-reminds-you-to-backup-your-world-today/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">World Backup Day</a> exists, and the special occasion has returned for a third year to make sure we all wind up in that first, very responsible camp. Thankfully, it's easier than ever to have at least some kind of safety net. Along with ridiculously high-capacity <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/externalharddrive/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">external hard drives</a>, both Mac and Windows users have simple <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/10/microsoft-details-windows-8-file-history/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">built-in</a> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/apple,time+machine/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">software</a> to make backup a set-it-and-forget-it affair. No money or room for an extra drive on the desk? No problem: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/cloudstorage/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">cloud storage</a> is ubiquitous, and even includes <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/02/05/bitcasa-leaves-beta-behind/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">unlimited options</a>. Mobile users have it a little easier with a myriad of Apple, Google and Microsoft cloud services, although there's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/20/carbonite-mobile-backs-up-the-contents-of-your-phone-allows-you/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">third-party options</a> in that space, too. In short, you've got few excuses to skimp out when it comes to safeguards, and enough choices to seriously consider using two or more -- which might be wise in this dangerous era of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/02/15/meteorite-shower-russia/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">meteorite showers</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/02/28/bigdog-robot-has-an-arm-now-run/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">brick-tossing robots</a>.</p>

<p class="image-container" style="text-align: center;"> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/27/thousands-of-amazon-s3-data-stores-left-unsecured/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img alt="Thousands of Amazon S3 data stores left unsecured due to misconfiguration" data-src-height="387" data-src-width="619" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/03/3-27-2013amazonlocker.jpg" /></a></p><p> Will Vandevanter, of <em>Help Net Security</em>, made a rather disturbing discovery: thousands of Amazon S3 data "buckets" were improperly configured and left exposed to prying eyes. Vandevanter started his probe by generating URLs using the names of major companies and sites that use <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/amazon?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Amazon's</a> cloud storage service. In the end he uncovered 12,328 of the so-called buckets -- 1,951 of which were visible to the public. Those folders were home to some 126 billion files that contain everything from personal data hosted by a social networking service, sales records, video game source code and even unencrypted <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/21/amazon-launches-glacier-archiving-service/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">backups</a> of databases. By default, S3 accounts are set to private, which means these stores of potentially sensitive data had to be flipped to public manually -- most likely by accident. Amazon has responded to the discovery by alerting users who might have inadvertently made their files publicly accessible. If you've got an S3 account of your own, now would be an excellent time to double check your own settings. And if you're looking for more details of Vandevanter's research, hit up the source link.</p>

It was just a month ago that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/02/07/mailbox-for-iphone-keeps-us-on-top-of-gmail/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Mailbox</a> launched its unique (if queue-ridden) email client for iPhone users, and today we're hearing that it's been acquired by <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Dropbox/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Dropbox</a>.<em> </em>While the two aren't explicit about their plans, the Mailbox crew makes clear that a Dropbox union will help scale its client, including to non-Gmail providers and more devices. The team also isn't shy about speculating about what could happen if Dropbox's cloud storage was "connected" to Mailbox. We'll just have to give the new partners some time to produce what could be an alluring software hybrid.</p><p> <strong>Update</strong>: "Sources" are suggesting the asking price was <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2013/03/15/mailbox-cost-dropbox-around-100-million/">around $100 million</a>. Which... we'll present without comment.</p>

<p class="image-container" style="text-align: center;"> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/12/dropbox-redesign-desktop-client-notifications-sharing/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img alt="Dropbox" data-src-height="520" data-src-width="491" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/03/dropboxnewdesktopclient.jpg" /></a></p><p> In a world that's becoming increasingly swamped with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/24/google-drive-vs-the-competition-dropbox-skydrive-icloud/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">cloud storage options</a>, it's good to see a true, original gangster innovating like the pressure is on. In a matter of moments, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Dropbox/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Dropbox</a> is going to launch a re-imagined desktop client -- one that promises "more visibility into activity in one's Dropbox, faster access to your files, and a brand new look and feel." The changes here are fairly subtle, but they're ones that power users are bound to appreciate. You'll be able to accept invitations with less friction, see links or albums that people have shared with you, and keep tabs on what's changed in your Dropbox. There's also a newfangled way to share your stuff with a link, right from the Dropbox menu.</p><p> Over on the mobile side, notifications for shared folders will also show up on the latest versions of Dropbox's iOS and Android apps (and on the web at <a href="https://www.dropbox.com/events" target="_blank"><em>dropbox.com/events</em></a>). Keep an eye on the source link; the new download links should be live any minute. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/dropboxs-redesigned-desktop-client-photo-gallery/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Dropbox's redesigned desktop client (photo gallery)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/dropboxs-redesigned-desktop-client-photo-gallery/5705923?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/03/dropboxnewmenu_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/dropboxs-redesigned-desktop-client-photo-gallery/5705924?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/03/dropboxsharebutton_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/dropboxs-redesigned-desktop-client-photo-gallery/5705925?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/03/dropboxmobileapp_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></p>

The update, which requires iOS 5.0 or higher introduces a new PDF viewer, file sorting by date modified, and push notifications for when someone shares a folder with you (which were also recently added to the Android client). Whether you're a Dropbox power user or the casual type, this new software bump should definitely come in handy. If you're a stickler for keeping your apps current and you've got 13.8MB to spare, the update's waiting for you at the source link below.</p>
