How much did limiting the number of press invites affect the total attendance of the 2009 Game Developers Conference? By about 1,000 people, according to a press release from organizer Think Services. This year's GDC hosted "more than 17,000 game industry professionals," down from last year's 18,000. Ask any of the Joystiq GDC 2009 Squad, and we're sure they'll tell you that 17,000 people feels like plenty.Next year's GDC will again take place in San Francisco's Moscone Center, from March 9 to March 13.

In the wake of the announcement that Philip Rosedale would be moving up to chairman of the Linden Lab board of directors, and that present chairman Mitch Kapor would be moving to a key (but as-yet-unnamed) role, Cornell University Professor Robert Bloomfield (Beyers Sellers in Second Life) will be hosting a special Metanomics session this Friday at 10:30AM SLT (US Pacific time). The session will feature a one-on-one discussion with Kapor, himself. The topic? Bloomfield offers, "We will talk about his vision for virtual worlds technology and business strategy and, of course, the future of Linden Lab and Second Life." Live coverage of this special edition of Metanomics on Friday, March 28, 2008 from the CMP sim, owned by United Business Media's Think Services division, will be broadcast exclusively on slcn.tv for those who cannot attend in person, or are unable to attend the sim in person.

As many who attended GDC recover from illness (thanks to days of rain and the plague-ridden in attendance), CMP Media says its 2008 conference broke a record and hosted 18,000 game industry professionals (previous attendance was somewhere around 16,000). Highlights included, well, we've covered all that already. GDC will be back at the Moscone Center in San Francisco again next year, blissfully later from March 23-27.Attendance could also take a tiny dip next year as Kotaku reports GDC may become invite-only for those seeking press credentials. Jamil Moledina, executive director of the Game Developers Conference, tells the site that CMP hasn't nailed down details on how it's going to work, but they are looking at an "invite model for press access." Moledina is worried about maintaining the show's atmosphere and wants to make sure GDC maintains its core goals.Read: 2008 GDC breaks attendance recordRead: GDC, DICE, E3 could all be press invite only

It's a groundbreaking achievement, and you probably can't afford it. The CMP Media Group has just published an exhaustive list of every significant game publisher and developer in North America. The publication details approximately 510 companies in the United States, and an additional 80 in Canada, and includes the full postal address, phone number, e-mail contact, URL, approximate number of employees, and examples of games produced for every included business, as well as details regarding the particular focuses of each company. In addition to the comprehensive directory, the census also reveals that over 39,700 individuals are currently employed by the games industry in the United States, and around 8,100 in Canada. Of those employees in the United States, over 46% are working in California, with Washington state a far second at 11%, and Texas third with 7.37%.Individuals interested in purchasing the report are probably out of luck. Priced at $1,995 (yes, that's a comma), the census is intended for contractors and service companies looking to invest or do business with the North American market. The census is the second publication from CMP's Game Developer Research group, which also published the industry salary report earlier this year.[Via Sys-Con]

Independent game developers, it's that time again. CMP media has posted a preliminary version of the Independent Games Summit (IGS) schedule on the Game Developers Conference (GDC) site. The IGS takes place March 5 - 6, 2007, the two days prior to the three day GDC at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. The summit is also tied in with the 2007 Independent Games Festival, which will feature the year's best independent games. Those nominations will be announced this Saturday on IGF.com. The winners will be announced March 7, the first night of GDC at the IGF Awards. The one simple request we have is that independent developers who end up being nominated for awards please, please, PLEASE have a speech ready when you win. Also, practice what you are going to say in a mirror a few times before you get up in front of thousands of people and just blow it. Trust us, it will help you in the long-term with your career.[Via GameSetWatch]

  • Picture It: scoring an invite to the new E3 [update 1]

In the wake of just-released information about the new mini-E3, we present to you this guide to getting an invite to the new, downsized show. An invite-only event in which publishers decide which outlets get to cover them creates conflicts of interest. Given limited space, publishers will naturally want to invite only those outlets that give them favorable coverage (and positive reviews). Some sites will take the cue and will obligingly pull punches. It could get ugly. Browse previous Picture It posts here. [Update 1: Fixed queue / cue error. Oops.]
