Hulu’s service, like AT&T TV Now, Dish’s Sling and YouTube TV, are a replica of traditional TV but on the internet. They were once vaunted as a successor to traditional cable. Viacom says its streaming service will launch this year

Yesterday, Viacom CFO Wade Davis said during an earnings call that the company is planning to launch its own streaming service this year, TechCrunch reports. Davis said that while withholding much of its content from other streaming services has reduced the revenue it could have collected, it also allowed the company to go forward with its own service. "In terms of the amount of content that it's going to have, it's going to have tens of thousands of hours of content that cut across the library we have on a global basis," said Davis. "And it's important to note one of the reasons that we are able to do this is that we've chosen to curtail the amount of content that we license into third-party [business to consumer] experiences."

Halo: Combat Evolved has already had its Anniversary edition on Xbox 360, and later this year, we'll see its remastered form once again as part of The Master Chief Collection on Xbox One. But official efforts from Microsoft and 343 Industries aren't the only ones working to update John-117 and Cortana's adventures; a group of modders has created "SPV3," a mod that improves the visuals while adding features not only from later Halo games, but some completely new ones as well. Want to hijack a Ghost? Take out a Brute with the Battle Rifle? Such are the dreams that SPV3 makes into reality. The mod is a work-in-progress, however, and won't be ready until later this year. The recently-released trailer shows that instead of being made available all at once, the group behind SPV3 is aiming to release individual levels over the course of two months later this year. Good news ahoy if you've liked Time Warner Cable's TWC TV streaming app but were frustrated with content providers pulling channels over licensing rights: the cable giant and Viacom have reached a settlement that will see Viacom's channels return to your Android or iOS gear. Comedy Central, CMT, MTV and other channels will be back in the next several weeks, and the two sides even managed to bury the hatched over "unrelated business matters," according to a joint statement. Just what led to the about-face is being kept secret, although Viacom's tendency to sue over retransmission rights in the digital realm raises the possibility that TWC had to fork over an extra amount. At least now you can watch The Daily Show on your iPad knowing your cable provider and the studio are singing "Kumbaya."

  • RCN picks up seven of Viacom's HD channels

RCN's hardly the first to go for Viacom's 7-pack of HD channels, but we're sure fans of Ultimate Warrior, The Hills, The Daily Show, iCarly and other programs will be glad to have them. Comedy Central, CMT, MTV, Nickelodeon, Spike, VH1 and BET go live today, with HD video on-demand offerings hitting servers July 1. RCN's claiming 100 HD VOD viewing choices, just a few thousand or so behind Comcast at this point, but we figure an upgrade is an upgrade, and at least on RCN you can watch them on a TiVo Premiere, so there's that right?

If you want your MTV HD you can get it, and BET HD, CMT HD, Comedy Central HD, Nickelodeon HD, Spike TV HD and VH1 HD on DISH Network. Thanks to a new deal with Viacom, all those HD feeds were announced today as available to all subscribers at no extra cost. Also included? Video on-demand and Internet streaming rights that senior VP Dave Shull had no problem claiming as a testament to DISH's "continued HD leadership" while also asserting its HD supremacy. BET HD is available on the Classic Silver 200 HD package and up, while all the rest are on the Classic Bronze 100 lineup.

We know you're looking forward to Country Music Television's two-hour TV event Elvis: Viva Las Vegas August 11 at 8 p.m., so why not preorder it on Blu-ray for delivery the day after? We can't think of a world where we wouldn't want to see Elvis' music performed and/or discussed by such luminaries as 50 Cent, Willie Nelson, Three 6 Mafia, Rob Thomas and others. Those still interested can grab the HD disc exclusively from Wal-mart for $19, over the standard $10 standard DVD price.

  • Zune Marketplace to get MTV, VH1, and CMT content?

A tenacious Zune user has recently stumbled across some potentially eyebrow-raising information while dipping into the device's desktop software files. It seems that embedded in an innocent looking ZuneMarketPlace.dll file is some internal code that suggests a new content partnership with MTV, VH1, and CMT for the Zune Marketplace. We know that Zune software has its roots in Windows Media Player, and Microsoft and MTV are pretty tight with their Urge integration in WMP11 -- but that doesn't necessarily mean this is holdover code. The found strings are very specific about mentioning "VH1 on Zune" and the like, so that's clearly cause for speculation. Too bad they didn't find anything about Lionsgate or some other movie studios though, this thing is way overdue for some video content.

  • 'Broad new content' on Xbox Marketplace? No kidding!

Xbox Live Marketplace will soon offer content from CMT, the nation's top country music station and Logo, the lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender network, along with a slew of other content. Yeah, they're definitely going for a demographic spread -- although there is always that gay cowboy demographic (coincidentally Brokeback Mountain is available on HD DVD and not Blu-ray).MTV owns both CMT and Logo, and following the success of their MTV, Comedy Central and VH1 brands on the Xbox Live service, decided to expand. CMT, beginning June 6, will offer Comedy Stage, Foxworthy's Big Night Out and Prankville. Logo, beginning June 11, will offer Noah's Arc (pictured), Wisecrack and Curl Girls. There will also be many Anime offerings including the HD version of Anime classic Akira and other properties of ADV Films (Samurai 7, Last Exile). And you, and you, and you, you're gonna maybe love Dreamgirls, Pan's Labyrinth and other movies coming to the marketplace this month. More details can be found at the Xbox site. A demographic spread in content is always a good thing for consumers and for business.[Via Press Release]

Microsoft just announced that two new television networks have signed up to offer television content on the XBLM. Starting June 6th Country Music Television programming will be available on the Marketplaces and June 11th MTV's gay/bisexual/trans-gender Logo programming will go live. Microsoft also announced that starting June 12th, two of the biggest anime distributors in the US (FUNimation and Geneon Entertainment) will be offering content on the Marketplace from shows like "Samurai 7", "Trinity Blood", and "Gun Sword". And if that doesn't wet your appetite, for the month of June new movies will be available on the Marketplace in HD including Shooter, Letters from Iwo Jima, and Black Snake Moan. It's a new content jamboree! Full press release after the break.

  • Catch a new concert every week on MHD

MTV's high definition network, MHD plans to premiere a new concert every week for the rest of the year. According to Tom Calderone, Executive Vice President of VH1, live concert and music programming are among the top things HD viewers want in a music channel. Of course, that doesn't explain why they only show music videos at 3 AM, but hopefully this is the start of an improvement. MHD launched earlier this year and is already available in half the HDTV-equipped homes in the country. MHD certainly puts up nice concert programming, the problem is they repeat the same content over and over throughout the week. Most networks don't consider adding one new episode of a show each week a major achievement, we'll be very excited when MHD reaches that point. The concert premieres planned: CMT Giants: Reba McEntire, premiering Saturday, November 18 at 8pm ET/PT on CMT and simulcast on MHD The 2006 MTV European Music Awards, premiering Saturday, November 25 at 9pm ET/PT CMT Crossroads: Lindsey Buckingham and Little Big Town, premiering Saturday, December 2 at 9pm ET/PT on CMT and simulcast on MHD Life & Rhymes: Snoop Dogg, premiering Saturday, December 9 at 9pm ET/PT Summer Fest: Lynyrd Skynyrd, premiering December 16 at 9pm ET/PT Isle of Wight Festival: Snow Patrol and Jet, premiering December 23 at 9pm ET/PT
