Still trying to scratch that itch left by the slow fade out of the Casey Anthony drama? Well, good news kiddies, CNN is pointing its 24-hour news hose straight at your face over a little thing we like to call the internet. The OG cable news network is finally returning to the streaming fray (die-hard Blitz-heads may remember a little service called CNN Pipeline) and offering live feeds of CNN and HLN, online and through its iOS apps. Unfortunately, just like HBO Go, you'll need to have a pay TV subscription through AT&T, Comcast, Cox, DISH Network, Suddenlink or Verizon to access the streams. For the moment Android users are left out in the cold but, that's ok, fans of dessert-themed OS names can pull in Al Jazeera English free of charge.
Continue reading CNN starts streaming 24 hours of 'news' online and on your iPhone

CNN starts streaming 24 hours of 'news' online and on your iPhone originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 18 Jul 2011 12:23:00 EST.
There was plenty about yesterday's Android event that didn't make headlines but was worth noting. Hardware acceleration of both 2D and 3D UI elements -- shown off to great effect by Google's Hugo Barra, who managed to scroll through three lists simultaneously without inducing any lag on the Motorola Xoom -- should make Honeycomb as delicious to look at as it sounds, while our personal favorite, the new tablet-specific email interface, should be part of Gmail yesterday. The email UI is built out of elements Google calls fragments, which will supposedly be easy to transition down to smartphones, so thumbs up all around. The video above also runs you through the big news of the day, namely that Android Market can now be accessed via a dedicated website and apps downloaded to your device remotely, along with the equally important (for devs) addition of in-app purchases. Finally, Cee-Lo Green pops in for a video chat session from wherever he is on the internets, and we're all treated to an exhibition of lag-afflicted, awkward conversation. What's not to love?
Watch Google's Android event in full: Honeycomb on the Xoom, Android Market website, in-app purchases, and Cee-Lo Green originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 03 Feb 2011 02:46:00 EST. Midterm elections are upon us and of course CNN has new technology to deliver every result, after the holograms and multitouch display madness (lampooned brilliantly by Saturday Night Live) of 2008, Wolf Blitzer and crew have gone to iPads and augmented reality. Check the video after the break to see how Ali Velshi uses his tablet to make non-diegetic stats and graphs appear right in the studio with him, Fringe/Panic Room style. We can't imagine life without the yellow first down marker during football games, but watching anchors play hide-and-seek behind bar graphs is either taking things a step too far, or just the thing help us stay interested in politics a little longer.
Continue reading CNN uses augmented reality, iPads to cover midterm election results

CNN uses augmented reality, iPads to cover midterm election results originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 02 Nov 2010 22:23:00 EST. Just a few short days after PlayOn support was apparently added to Roku's stable of set-top boxes, it looks as if the fun has come to an abrupt halt. Based on quotes from both PlayOn and Roku staff members, it sounds like the PlayOn channel will no longer work on those who try to get it installed, but those who managed to slip in early may be in the clear. Jim, a PlayOn staffer, stated that his company was "contacted today by Roku and told that they were going to disallow this channel," and because neither the Roku channel developer nor Roku "are affiliated with PlayOn, [they] have no control over the situation." On the Roku side, one Patrick has confirmed that "while... many of you are excited about a PlayOn-compatible Channel and may be using it, it unfortunately presents the possibility of legal exposure for us; as a result, the current PlayOn channels have been removed and are no longer available to add to your Roku player." If your bubble has just been popped in the worst possible way, we'd probably start looking into that 30-day return policy -- for you early birds, is PlayOn still working on your Roku box? Hit us up in comments below.
For those unaware, PlayOn delivers online material from Hulu, PBS, TBS, ESPN, CNN, MLB.tv and YouTube (among other places), but the catch is that there's an annual fee for having access ($34.99 for the first year; $19.99 each year thereafter). Furthermore, you'll need a PC on the same network as the Roku in order to fetch the content and send it over, but if you're already setup, you can hit the source link for download and pricing details.
PlayOn now available on Roku: more content for a price originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 25 Oct 2010 20:17:00 EST. Considering the level of hype that has surrounded Google TV, freakishly little is actually known about how it'll work. Of course, a lot of that is expected to be cleared up on Wednesday when Logitech unveils its Google TV lineup, but the Big G itself is giving us all a sneak peek beforehand. The company has just launched a new 'quick tour' portal that showcases the most prominent Google TV features, including Search, Web, Apps, Remote (complete with an Eastbound & Down plug), Personal, Dual View and DVR. Frankly, we're pretty jazzed by the look of the user interface, and we can hardly wait to see what kind of punches Logitech and Sony throw in the coming weeks. Hit that source link to draw your own conclusion.

Update: Google has elaborated some on its plans, and it's all shaping up quite nicely. We're told that Turner Broadcasting has been working to optimize the websites of TBS, TNT, CNN, Cartoon Network and more for viewing on Google TV, and NBC Universal has collaborated with Google TV to bring CNBC Real-Time, an application that allows you to track your favorite stocks and access news feeds while enjoying the best financial news from CNBC directly on the TV screen. HBO GO will also be supported and the NBA has built NBA Game Time, an application that lets you follow game scores in real-time and catch up on the latest highlights from your favorite team in HD. Need more? Amazon Video on Demand will be present, and it sounds like Goog has hordes of other companies just moments away from offering compatible content portals. Hop on past the break for a quick video overview of the Apps segment.

Update 2: Whoa, Netflix just confirmed that 'Watch Instantly' will be fully supported on Google TV devices launching later this month. Huzzah!
Continue reading Google TV quick tour shows off the service's inner workings, Kenny Powers' dreams (update: Netflix support!)

Google TV quick tour shows off the service's inner workings, Kenny Powers' dreams (update: Netflix support!) originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 04 Oct 2010 12:19:00 EST. Continuing to extend its lead in the TV everywhere space, FiOS has added CNN and HLN to the list of streaming options for FiOS subscribers. Although it is tied to your FiOS account, you only need your user id and password to access it via any internet connection. The service provides a live stream of the CNN feed by day, and the HLN feed by night and although the quality is far from what we've grown to expect from CNN HD, it is far and away better than most SDTVs available in hotels and airports.
FiOS' TV Online now includes CNN and HLN originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 25 Sep 2010 15:46:00 EST. With field production trucks already HDTV-prepped only affiliate footage can potentially interrupt our 1080i bliss, but honestly, we're just waiting for the return of the holograms.
CNN preparing new HD-ready studio for daytime programming originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 15 Mar 2010 11:04:00 EST. If not for anything else, this should extend even beyond Presidential Address' ability to compare the audio/video delivery capabilities of different networks, with CNN, Fox, ABC, Fox News, CBS, E! and more broadcasting, plus internet streams available from most (CNN, Sky, CBS, ABC are confirmed), plus Hulu and the StaplesCenter.com website itself. Sony Ericsson's Panels interface hasn't taken off the way HTC's TouchFLO 3D has, but it's still a nice way to momentarily forget that you're being forced to use Windows Mobile 6.1. At any rate, those who plunked down some eight bills to procure an XPERIA X1 should probably give this a look, as SE has just unveiled the latest Panels for its first (and likely last) HTC-designed smartphone. Available starting in mid-March, users will be able to suck down CNN, Skype, Mytopia and 'On the Road' Panels. For specific details on what each will provide, you know where to head.
Filed under: Handsets, Multimedia, Software, Sony Ericsson, Windows Mobile, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA

Sony Ericsson outs CNN, Skype, Mytopia panels for XPERIA X1 originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 19 Feb 2009 07:15:00 EST. Election Night 2008 brought about an unprecedented amount of HD coverage, and while we're all in absolute agreement that CNN's "holographic" interviews were the comedy for the evening, we're interested on your take on how networks as a whole did with their high-def presentation. Was CBS' polished graphics set enough to overcome those embarrassing audio gaffes? Did ABC / FOX have the edge? Where did you find yourself tuned to most of the night? Drop your vote (hey, there's a concept!) below.

Sure, not every station's pulled out the Star Wars / Iron Man-style holograms for the 2008 election, but they're all trying to put shiny new HD studios to full use and get as many eyeballs as possible until things are decided. NBC & ABC immediately jumped out front at 7 p.m. with data pouring in on the widescreen edges of their HD feeds, with CNN waiting until states were decided to begin updating their lists. ABC's chosen to lean on its touchscreen display and forgo side graphics altogether, while despite Fox's claim as "America's Election HQ", with totally bare shoulders and boring sets, we're pointing our flatscreens elsewhere. PBS, despite airing the clearest, most high quality video available of three old guys at a table, has no slick touchscreens or HD graphics packages to speak of. Think about that as you check out the rest of the screens after the break, and during the next donation drive. Big Bird deserves better.
Continue reading Election '08 coming home in HD like never before

Election '08 coming home in HD like never before originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 04 Nov 2008 21:37:00 EST. Big Bird deserves better.
Continue reading Election '08 coming home in HD like never before

Filed under: ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC, Primetime

Election '08 coming home in HD like never before originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 04 Nov 2008 21:37:00 EST. Deciding which channel to catch the Vice Presidential Debate on tonight? Wall Street Journal's The Numbers Guy points out that CNN's HD feed includes live analyst scorecards on the side of the screen (not included in the SD broadcast). Of course, with somewhat loose interpretations of how or when to score the debates, and a lack of explanation to viewers on what the scores the executive producer admitted there's room for improvement, but it may be worth checking out tonight and during future debates. CNN's Election Express has already deployed an HD news truck to cover the campaign trail, but CBS is close behind. The Eye plans to hit the conventions in HD, but it will take a while to move the newscast beyond upconverted standard definition video. NBC and ABC will also have the conventions in HD, but while NBC says its field equipment is HD ready, ABC doesn't plan to move beyond 4x3 newsgathering until the end of the year. Check out the rest of the details on TV Technology, we can't tell you who to vote for, but we wouldn't make a decision based on anything said in 480i.

Election '08 coverage to include more HD originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 18 Apr 2008 21:33:00 EST. Canadians, rejoice! Effectively immediately, Rogers cable customers in Ontario can tune into CNN HD on channel 545. 'Course, only certain shows such as American Morning, Lou Dobbs Tonight, Anderson Cooper 360 and In The Money are actually shot in high-definition, but hey, you'll take what you can get, eh? Sadly, there's no word on if / when the station will bleed out to other locales and carriers in Canada, but if you manage to spot it on your lineup (and you're not already situated in Ontario), be sure to drop us a line in comments.
Filed under: Industry, Cable, New content

CNN HD heads north to Canada on Rogers originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 16 Jan 2008 19:42:00 EST. According to tipster Casey, customers in and around Baltimore, Maryland and Northern Virginia are just now receiving six new high-definition channels: Discovery Channel HD, CNN HD, TLC HD, USA HD, Animal Planet HD, and yes, Sci-Fi HD, too. Up next on Comcast's list is St. Paul / Minneapolis, Minnesota (and western Wisconsin), which is receiving 11 new channels to complement the 22 already available. And like other HD news, it will be a mix of SD and HD. Our favorite quote is, "We're not going to stretch our video." when asked how they would deal with 4:3 shots from their library clips and the newsgathering. The worst news is that they haven't upgraded their studio in Atlanta yet, so shows like The Situation Room with anchor Wolf Blitzernot won't be in HD. They are working to make it all HD by upgrading studios and the newsgathering cameras, but as we've learned, these things take time. The other thing that takes time are carriage agreements, which they say are also in progress. We've stopped trying to make sense of these negotiations, especially when you consider that Time Warner Cable and CNN HD are owned by the same company, yet CNN HD will debut on DirecTV.

[Via DBSTalk]

CNN HD is ready whenever DirecTV is originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 01 Sep 2007 19:29:00 EST. We know we've been laying a bit low lately, but apparently we caught someone's eye over at CNN. We're only thankful they didn't do too much to lump us in with the actual pirates the story is about, but the site appeared in Jim Boulden's "Stealing Oscars" report on pirated Blu-ray and HD DVD movies.

[Thanks, Josh and Adam]

Engadget in CNN on "Stealing Oscars" originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 27 Feb 2007 13:51:00 EST. After all 2006 was a slow year for new HD channels. DirecTV has been boasting for some time about the number of HD channels they would have and today they have announced specific channels. The interesting part is that <strike>almost none</strike> only a few of the channels they announced today are currently offering HD programming. The channels announced today include.

A&E

National Geographic

Bravo

NFL Network

Cartoon Network

SciFi Channel

CNN

Food Network

TBS

FX

HGTV

The Weather Channel

MTV

USA Network

Currently DirecTV only carries 9 national HD channels and even with this list and as many premium channels we can think of there would still only be 30 HD channels. Throw in 20 or so for regional sports channels and is still only 50% of their claim. As much as we want to believe them, we have our reservations.

DirecTV to carry 100 National HD Channels in 2007 originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 09 Jan 2007 06:15:00 EST. Two Time Warner networks (disclaimer: Engadget's parent company's parent company's parent company is Time Warner), CNN and Cartoon Network, have joined Disney, Universal, Paramount, and 20th Century Fox in fighting Cablevision's plan to offer subscribers the option of recording their programming to the company's servers, arguing that allowing at-will remote access to stored content constitutes a re-transmission, and therefore violates copyright agreements. What makes Time Warner's entry into the fray particularly interesting is the fact that another one of its divisions, Time Warner Cable, has publicly expressed interest in the concept of networked DVR, meaning that either outcome of the lawsuit would be potentially beneficial to the company. Way to go guys, you can never go wrong playing both sides of the fence.

More networks suing Cablevision over networked DVR originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 31 May 2006 14:15:00 EST. Course you have. The picture is beautiful but thereis nothing extra that the HDTV format gives you. When they display stats on the screen you can see that they extendright to the spot that a 4:3 TV ends. ESPN can't give you more info just because you have a HDTV. They would bealienating the non-HD owners.

This has to be the same reason that cable stations have not gone high-defyet. They can give you a great picture but nothing more. Moreover, these stations rely on a lot of cameras that are notin the studio to give you most of their programming so there would be a good amoount of non-HD content on thestation.

Still, a guy can dream can't he?

Where are all the cable news HD stations? originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 17 Apr 2006 16:49:00 EST.
