Apple’s new M1-powered Macs appear to meet the company’s audacious speed claims, but there are still some drawbacks compared to Intel Macs. One thing that’s getting lost in the transition to M1 is Boot Camp, a tool that allowed you to install and run Windows on a separate partition of your Mac’s hard drive. Obviously, there’s no version of Windows that can run on the M1 chip, so Boot Camp is off the table for now.

For those who want to transport more people inside Tesla’s smaller electric SUV, the exec tweeted that production will begin next month ahead of the first deliveries in December. As Car and Driver points out, opting for a seven seat interior is a $3,000 option on Tesla’s website, which promises availability in 2021. Prices for the Model Y currently start at just under $50k before projected savings, so it’s something to think about if you’re still looking into a Tesla EV in the next year or so.

Volkswagen is giving us a glimpse of the ID.4, its first all-electric crossover, before the vehicle’s official reveal later this month. The automaker has released photos of ID.4’s interior, showing its touchscreen displays — yes, it has more than one — dials and an intuitive lighting strip. The ID.4 will also feature 30-color ambient lighting and a light strip below the windscreen that can signal drivers, say, when the vehicle’s drive system is active and when the car has been locked or unlocked.

Tesla's Model Y is reaching buyers roughly a year after its debut. The company has followed up numerous buyer reports by confirming that deliveries of its electric crossover are officially underway in spring (really, late winter) as promised. It's not clear just how many vehicles are enroute at this stage, but it's notable that initial orders revolve around pricier Long Range and Performance configurations -- standard range models won't show until 2021.

Fisker also revealed new details about the vehicle's drivetrain, comfort and safety features.

Ford thinks the Mustang Mach-E's frunk is a good tailgate cooler

Super Bowl LIV is still fresh in many people's memories, but that isn't stopping Ford from trying to capitalize on next year's game. The company is drumming up hype for the Mustang Mach-E by suggesting that would-be buyers use the electric crossover's frunk as a cooler for tailgate parties -- no, it's not kidding. It claims the front trunk is equivalent to a 36-gallon cooler, while the drain cap lets you fit ridiculous quantities of football-friendly food that otherwise wouldn't be an option. Ever wanted to carry mounds of shrimp, beer or wings you could serve just by popping the hood of your SUV? Probably not, but that isn't stopping Ford's imagination from running wild.

Turkey's first fully homemade car is an electric crossover SUV

Turkey has long been partly dependent on foreign automakers, but it's about to claim independence in a big way. TOGG, a consortium of Turkish companies, has unveiled an electric crossover SUV as the country's first fully homegrown car (outside of help from Italian design firm Pininfarina, that is). It won't be a modest undertaking, either. While the base options will provide a single 200HP rear-axle motor (good for 62MPH in 7.6 seconds) and a 186-mile range, you can spec it out to a 400HP dual-motor setup (0-62MPH in 4.8 seconds) and 300 miles of range.

Mercedes has posted a teaser for the production EQA, and it doesn't appear share much of anything in common with the 2018 concept EV. The near-finished vehicle is now positioned as an "electric brother" of the 2021 GLA crossover, complete with a virtually identical side profile. Mercedes hasn't said much more, but it is promising "off-road features" for more adventurous drivers. You can expect an official debut sometime in 2020.

Lexus is moving beyond far-out concepts and releasing its first production electric car, but you may want to temper your expectations. The automaker has unveiled the UX 300e, an electrified version of its UX crossover that hides some serious powerplant changes underneath an otherwise familiar exterior. It replaces the gas engine with a 201HP front motor and a 54.3kWh battery. That last figure might not sound like much, but Lexus claimed that it would net up to 250 miles of range based on the NEDC testing cycle. We'd expect less with the newer WLTP cycle, but it's still likely to be a healthy amount given the battery capacity.

The Leaf is a smart and practical EV, but no one would ever call it fun. Nissan is looking to switch that up with its next generation of electric cars, judging by the Ariya concept it unveiled at Tokyo Motor Show. The swoopy, bold design along with the premium, lounge-like cabin is meant to signal the "pure, clean nature" of EVs, Nissan said in a press release.

Mazda's first electric car opens up thanks to 'Freestyle' doors

    by
    Richard Lawler

    10.22.2019

Mazda is a bit late to the electrified party, but the small MX-30 crossover it just unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show might have been worth waiting for. Besides its 35.5kWh lithium-ion battery and e-Skyactiv the showstopping feature here is the RX-8-like "Freestyle" door setup, with front and rear doors on both sides that open at the center "so customers can invent new and creative ways of using the car." Like the Tesla Model X with its Falcon Wing doors that open up instead of out, the Freestyle doors -- which open to 82 degrees in the front and 80 degrees in the rear -- are supposed to make getting people and things in and out easier than ever. This is no towering SUV however, while it's over 14 feet long, the top of MX-30 is only a little over 5 feet high. Mazda: One of the most outstanding features of the MX-30 is its unique center-pillar-less Freestyle doors with custom-designed hinges that allow the front doors to open to 82° and rear doors to open to 80°. This not only makes entering and exiting the car and loading and unloading cargo easier but also provides easier access for strollers and wheelchairs. The wide angle to which the front doors open was designed to facilitate this wide variety of usage styles. For example, the layout and the absence of a center pillar make it possible to bring a stroller right up beside the rear seat and smoothly and comfortably put a baby into a child seat while maintaining eye contact. The front door is opened first, followed by the rear door, and both can be opened without changing position. Opening the freestyle doors wide provides a new view and, in addition to improving access, opens a range of new possibilities for enjoying the car. For instance, drivers may wish to take time out of their daily routine to stop by the park, open up the doors and listen to the sounds of nature for a few moments or to use the car like base camp from which to enjoy outdoor activities with their friends. To further enhance the freedom of ingress and egress provided by the Freestyle doors, the height and shape of the door openings are designed in accordance with human characteristics. The rear door trim adopts a vertical grip that makes opening and closing the door easier and that does not place much burden on the wrist when reaching for it, even with the door wide open. The front seats are equipped with a walk-in mechanism that, with a single touch, folds the seatback forward and simultaneously slides the whole seat toward the front.1 The folding angle and slide distance were chosen in consideration of the occupant's body movements, ensuring smooth entry to and exit from the rear seats. The cross-section of the side sills and shape of the side sill garnish are also carefully designed to facilitate smooth, effortless exit from the cabin.
