Apple event: Watch the iPhone 15 reveal here
Apple’s iPhone 15 event is upon us. You can watch the stream right here and marvel at the spate of announcements beamed live from Cupertino. The keynote, subtitled “Wonderlust”, begins promptly at 1 PM ET, or 10 AM in the sunny environs of Apple’s California’s campus.
Via's on-demand van service comes to Apple's backyard
Via's on-demand vans have been available in a handful of cities, but now the company is aiming for a particularly obvious market: Silicon Valley commuters. The city of Cupertino and Via are launching an alternative public transportation network on October 29th that will let locals hail a Mercedes shuttle van to travel within the city, including to and from Apple Park -- helpful for staff who want a relatively inexpensive ride to work. You'll also find a "satellite zone" of service around the Sunnyvale CalTrain station to help commuters complete their trips.
Apple's latest expansion puts it closer to its biggest rivals
Apple is on track to become the largest private employer in Austin, Texas, after announcing plans to invest $1 billion in a new campus less than a mile away from its existing facilities there. The 133-acre site will initially be home to 5,000 new employees, with the potential to grow to 15,000. The company has also announced plans to establish new sites in Seattle, San Diego and Culver City and expand in cities across the United States including Pittsburgh, New York and Boulder, Colorado over the next three years, with the potential for additional expansion elsewhere in the US over time.
Apple's home city Cupertino wants a Hyperloop
Cupertino, the city that hosts Apple's gigantic "spaceship campus," said it's in preliminary talks with Hyperloop to bring the high speed train to town. "We are talking to Hyperloop to have a line," said councilor Barry Chang. "If this comes to a realization, it would only take five minutes from DeAnza College to downtown San Jose instead of a couple hours."
Cupertino delays per-employee business tax for Apple and others
This week, Cupertino's city council voted to delay a measure that would put an employee "head tax" on local businesses before the population for a vote. The Silicon Valley city is, of course, home to Apple, which opposed the measure.
Apple has sold its billionth iPhone
Apple has managed to pull in some extremely impressive numbers when it comes to its flagship mobile phone. While iPhone sales overall had begun to decline over the last quarter, that didn't stop the company from selling its one billionth iPhone last week.
Apple's reportedly getting a second 'Spaceship' campus
Apple's new 2.8 million square foot California HQ hasn't even been built yet, but already the "spaceship" campus has achieved iconic status. Tim Cook and 12,000 other employees hope to move in late next year, but that won't be the end of the company's expansion in the area. BizJournals reports that Apple has signed a new deal for Landbank Investments LLC's planned Central & Wolfe campus in Sunnyvale, which is roughly a five-mile drive from its current Cupertino home.
Apple's first major Watch update arrives September 16th
The iPhone 6s might be what most people are waiting for (or that iPad Pro), but that doesn't mean Apple Watch owners aren't getting any attention. As expected, Cupertino just confirmed the first (significant) software update for the wearable will arrive next week -- September 16th.
AT&T's gigabit internet arrives in Apple's backyard
It's official: AT&T is offering full-fledged gigabit internet service in Silicon Valley before Google. After months of teasing, the telecom has launched its U-verse GigaPower service in Cupertino, Apple's home turf -- and a quick drive away from Google's headquarters, we'd add. Get ready to pony up if you're in the area, though. Gigabit access costs $110 per month by itself, and that's if you agree to AT&T's Internet Preferences (read: targeted ads). In other cities, it costs as little as $70. Still, this may hit the sweet spot if you're a local tech worker who just can't wait to download the latest test releases. Apple schedules March 9th event ahead of Watch launch
You know the drill. Apple issues an invite for an event, and tech media channels go wild with speculation. Except that we know the event in question this time, scheduled for March 9, is almost certainly about the Apple Watch. How? Well, we already know it's slated for an April release, so there's that. Oh and a not-so-subtle "spring forward" message the invite contains. Apple losing its cryptic touch? Maybe, but it's not unknown for Cook and crew to throw in a few surprises (but please, no more musical "surprises"). Engadget will of course be there to find out, with a liveblog so you can follow along too. Just don't forget to change your (non Apple) watch an hour, or you'll miss the whole darn thing.
Apple releases new image of Campus 2 progress
Apple has released a new aerial image of the continuing progress of its new campus in Cupertino. The image was shared on the city's website, along with updates about how construction will impact the citizenry in the near future. Construction isn't expected to be finished until the fourth quarter of 2016. The new image comes almost a month after an aerial video was released showcasing the project's progress. Even with all of the progress that's been made since that video's release, the amount of work remaining before completion of the project is staggering. The new Apple Campus 2 - AKA "The Spaceship" - is rapidly progressing through construction, and AppleInsider has been sending a DJI Phantom 2 Vision Plus drone through the skies of Cupertino on a regular basis to provide a birds-eye view of the campus taking shape. The December tour shows that despite the short days of fall and early winter, a lot of work is being done. The spaceship ring is now almost completely covered with a concrete subfloor structure, and over a dozen cranes are busy moving materials into the ring for assembly. Construction on the US$161 million underground theater is also moving along, with a well-defined excavation near a hill constructed of fill materials that will soon be covered with trees. Finally, the drone imagery show that the first of two huge concrete parking structures is now three floors in height. AppleInsider also provides a bit of context near the end, showing the location of the existing Infinite Loop headquarters nearby. Apple's next big event is on October 16th, new iPad and Macs likely
It's only been a month since the world's press descended on the Flint Center for the Performing Arts to see Tim Cook reveal a pair of new iPhones, and Apple's already calling everyone back again. Invites to an October 16th event at the company's Cupertino headquarters have just started making the rounds -- if rumor mill's ceaseless whispers hold true, we'll be getting a eyeful of a new iPad Air and some new Mac computers, along with a few software notes to round out the package.
Cupertino publishes official aerial photograph of Campus 2 construction
The City of Cupertino California recently updated Apple's public Campus 2 project page with current project status information and a new aerial photograph showcasing the work being done on the site. Construction is occurring at a rapid pace with the circular foundation of the new campus building visible in the photograph. A general project timeline posted on the Cupertino website suggests demolition, earthwork and street utility work will be completed by early 2015, while building construction will continue until the end of 2016. When completed, the campus will include a 2.8 million-square-foot office building, a 100,000 square-foot fitness center, a 120,000 square-foot auditorium and an underground parking garage for up to 2,400 cars. While most of the progress is hidden from a street level view, recent drone footage of the campus site provides a close-up look at the ongoing construction and showcases the immensity of the project.

AT&T's gigabit internet beats Google Fiber to Silicon Valley
Well, this has to be awkward: the first company to bring gigabit internet to Silicon Valley isn't Google, it's AT&T. The telco's ultra-high speed U-verse service will land in Cupertino in a few months, meaning that Apple employees (or any other subscribers in the area) will be able to test AT&T's claim that you can download 25 songs in a single second sometime soon. AT&T's senior VP of U-verse Eric Boyer tells Bloomberg that bringing Gigapower to the city is a "no brainer" considering how intrinsic bandwidth is to the area. For its part, Google has plans to expand Fiber's rollout into nearby San Jose, but when that'll happen is anyone's guess -- maybe this could, ahem, speed that along. [Image credit: Associated Press]
Apple Campus 2 on track for completion in 2016
Apple's Cupertino campus, located at 1 Infinite Loop in Cupertino, California, acts as its corporate headquarters and comprises roughly 850,000 square feet of office and lab space. In 2006, Steve Jobs announced Apple would be building a second Cupertino campus. Construction was originally supposed to be finished by 2015, but delays pushed the initial groundbreaking from 2013 to 2014. Now an updated schedule on Cupertino.org is showing the project is expected to be finished by the end of 2016. Cupertino's website regularly updates with information about how the development of the second Apple campus will affect traffic in the city. You can see the current schedule below:
Monitor Stand Showdown: Redmond vs Cupertino
I didn't even realize this was a thing, but accessory maker Allsop has computer monitor stands that cater to whichever side you favor in the PC wars. The company makes fancy stands in both Redmond and Cupertino flavors. There's no functional difference between the two, so it's all about aesthetics, but I have to wonder if these boxes fight in the back of the shipping trucks on their way to the store. A family of four... um, Apples?
I generally dislike the whole practice of putting stickers on your car to represent your immediate family, but I suppose if I were to join in, I'd consider this as a way to go. Of course, there's also the possibility that this person just really really loves Apple, in which case I'd have to insist that one sticker gets the point across just fine.
