Apple exploring 'touchless' gestures and curved iPhone screens
A future iPhone could be controlled without you even touching it. Apple is exploring touchless gesture control and curved screens, according to the latest rumors from Bloomberg. A display that "gradually" curves inward from top to bottom is still at least two to three years away, while the touch-free tech "likely won't be ready for consumers for at least two years." That's assuming Apple finds merit in continuing with the R&D cycle for it. Samsung and Motorola have both used touchless gestures in their handsets before, but it sounds like Apple's version is a bit different in terms of implementation. Rather than using motion sensors in the bezel, Bloomberg says that the display itself will apparently act as the sensor and your hands will have to be much closer to the screen as a result. Of course, Apple works on far out technology all the time, and more often than not, it doesn't come to market. Remember when the company teased swappable camera lenses back in 2012? Or a solar powered iPhone? Well, it's six and eight years, respectively, since those patents were filed and neither feature has been added yet.
Google might bring curved screens to its next Pixel phone
Google, which has taken a hands-off approach to Android hardware until recently, may be getting more involved in smartphone production. It's reportedly investing up to $875 million in LG Display to develop a stable supply of flexible OLED screens for its Pixel phones, according to reports from Korea's Yonhap News and Electronic Times (ET). That would help ease supply problems for the next-gen device, as the current model has been nearly impossible to find.
Acer's latest PCs include the first curved screen laptop
You no longer have to stick to your desk to enjoy a flashy curved display. Acer is unveiling flood of new laptops at Germany's IFA show, and the highlight by far is the Predator 21 X -- according to Acer, the world's first curved screen laptop. As the name suggests, opening up this gigantic gaming portable reveals a 21-inch curved, ultra-wide display that promises more immersion than you're used to with portable gaming. It 'only' touts a 2,560 x 1,080 resolution, but NVIDIA G-Sync support should give you smoother, game-friendly output.
For $200, Samsung's latest Gear VR headset is a no-brainer
If you're the owner of a new Samsung Galaxy S6 or S6 Edge, an extra $200 will get you Samsung's Gear VR Innovator Edition, one of the first virtual reality headsets available to the public. Like others following the Oculus Rift story, I assumed that all VR headsets still presented issues like nausea and lag and weren't yet consumer-friendly. But I wanted to see for myself what the fuss was all about, and since I already have an S6 Edge, I decided to splurge on one. In a few short days, my prejudices have melted away: The Gear VR isn't perfect, but it already does plenty of things, and does them well.
