A new fragrance is out, and it smells exactly like the old one. It's the gentle waft of something I'm quite familiar with: Star Trek fandom. Let me preface this by saying I've been a fan of Star Trek ever since I saw an episode of The Next Generation back when my parents used to tape it every week so we could watch it as a family. So when I declare that people griping about Star Trek Online's emphasis on combat aren't true Trek fans, I know the amount of weight that statement carries. And you know what? They really aren't true fans.

When Cryptic announced that Champions Online would offer a single shard system, the general response by the community was a positive one. But like most good things, it seemed to come with a caveat -- nobody knew for sure if this was a global rule or merely meant one world for each region. Well worry no more, because in the latest Ask Cryptic we finally have our answer! The official response is, "We plan on Champions Online to have only one great big shard worldwide. There should be no need to make sure you all get copies from the same region, you can all play together." It's quite good to read those words, as it means we can finally play with our friends across the pond without worrying about purchasing a UK version of the game. Huzzah!

Another series of community-supplied questions and answers is sitting on the Champions Online website just in time for the weekend. As usual, Cryptic cherry-picked a nice variety of inquiries that vary from how much non-combat content the game would have, to whether or not in-game social gathering locations an events were planned.Social spots/events are being facilitated in a big way, so no surprises there. Although you may find yourself a little surprised concerning non-combat in Champions Online. Combat? There's a lot of it - shock! But that doesn't mean Cryptic is blind to the fact that some superheroes do much more than pound faces until they look like a bowl of meat pudding.

Julien offers this shot of City of Villains' Grandville, looking up on Lord Recluse's tower. (And hovering further above, we see the Arachnos Flyer, preparing to deploy troops to the lower levels of Grandville.) With Lord Recluse's statue in the foreground, this single screenshot seems to represent the atmosphere of the game as a wholeSnapped any good screenshots recently?
