Netflix's foray into podcasting will soon include its first scripted show. Variety has learned that Netflix is supplementing its apocalyptic zombie show Daybreak with a podcast, The Only Podcast Left, on November 7th. The six-episode program will tell the story of teens who decide to (what else?) make a podcast in spite of the grim situation. Showrunner and lead writer Aron Coleite is involved as an executive producer, so TOPL shouldn't stray too far from the themes of the main Netflix series.

As you'd expect, Netflix is planning plenty of seasonal thrillers for October. The theme this year is that the kids are not okay. You'll meet Eli, a child with a mysterious illness who has to be secluded from the world and is battling "nightmares." Raising Dion is sci-fi look at the horrors of parenting. In Fractured, a man is searching for his daughter who vanished from an ER. In Daybreak, a teenage outcast is navigating a post-apocalyptic world full of zombies. Rattlesnake stars a single mother who will do anything to save her daughter, and In The Tall Grass -- based on a novella by Stephen King and his son Joe Hill -- stars a pregnant woman who gets lost in a field of tall grass when she tries to answer a boy's cry for help.

Unfortunately, Telltale's effective closure wasn't the end of tough times for the game industry. H1Z1 and EverQuest developer Daybreak Game Company has confirmed that it's laying off staff as it's "optimizing [its] structure" for the future. The company didn't say how many people were losing their jobs, but former Daybreak president John Smedley had briefly claimed on Twitter (since absent) that the cuts affected as many as 70 people. There hasn't been confirmation of this number, and he has since deleted the tweet.

The original 'H1Z1' survival game shuts down October 24th

With all the hoopla over battle royale games, it's easy to forget that H1Z1 didn't start out as a competitive shooter. It launched as an online zombie survival title, split into two experiences and eventually saw the battle royale side take the H1Z1 name -- the original experience evolved under the Just Survive banner. And now, that initial game is going away. Daybreak has unveiled plans to shut down Just Survive on October 24th at 2PM Eastern, pinning the move on a low player count that made support impractical.

Battle royale shooter 'H1Z1' officially arrives on PS4

You're in a tough spot if you're a PS4 owner who likes battle royale, but doesn't care much about Fortnite. PUBG is a no-go, Realm Royale is still in a closed beta and titles like Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 will cost money just to play. It's a good thing, then, that Daybreak has officially launched H1Z1 after weeks of open testing. The free-to-play shooter makes its formal debut on the console with familiar game mechanics that focus on fast-paced matches in a semi-realistic world. The main improvement is content -- the 'finished' version has considerably more than you initially saw in the beta.

'H1Z1' battle royale arrives fashionably late on PS4

The battle royale genre is certainly all the rage right now, but before Fortnite: Battle Royale and PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, Daybreak's H1Z1 was challenging players with its zombie survival sandbox. It's been a bumpy ride, however, after three years of early access H1Z1 has not only launched as a full-fledged game, it's also kicking off its PlayStation 4 open beta today.

Battle royale pioneer 'H1Z1' comes to PS4 on May 22nd

PS4 players don't have many major choices for battle royale games: there's Fortnite, of course, but you won't find PUBG or up-and-coming games like Radical Heights. All that is about to change in a month, though, as Daybreak is releasing H1Z1 (the title that arguably started the battle royale trend) an open PS4 beta on May 22nd. It'll remain free-to-play with purchasable cosmetic items, but will pack new progression mechanics to keep things quick, including the pacing of the gas (the zone of death in battle royale titles) and airdrops.

PlanetSide 2 is massive -- it holds the Guinness World Record for the most players in a single online, first-person shooter battle with 1,158 people -- and it officially launches on PlayStation 4 on June 23rd, completely free to play. It's been in beta on PS4 since January, but the floodgates really open later this month, especially considering you don't need a PlayStation Plus subscription to jump in for free. Developer Daybreak Game Company (formerly Sony Online Entertainment) promises to keep the updates coming on PS4 with holiday content, new features and fresh items.

  • Daybreak: No SOE Live this year, but our games will endure

What does the transition from SOE to Daybreak Game Company mean for you? Well for starters, if you had set aside money and time to attend SOE Live this year, it's time to change those plans. Community Manager Linda Carlson confirmed on Twitter that the fan convention would be taking some time off due to the corporate transition: "SOE Live will take a hiatus as we focus on our exciting transition and the future of Daybreak Game Company." Daybreak President John Smedley also posted several follow-ups to the announcement and the ensuing player questions: "1) All our games are still up and will continue to be despite our new name. 2) Yes, we want to bring our games to Xbox One in addition to PS4. 3) Station Cash doesn't change at all (though we will be rebranding it soon here). 4) We're still making Everquest Next. Nothing has changed."

  • Daybreak action MMO aims for global release

Chinese developer Linekong is bringing Daybreak to the global market. "That's great," you may say, "but what is Daybreak?" Daybreak is an action MMORPG to which players can connect either through a client or browser. The game currently has four classes, all gender-locked: the Knight, Hunter, Puppet Master, and Mage. Among other features are a handful of PvP modes, upgradeable mounts, pets that evolve, and bosses both in dungeons and the open world. Despite that action moniker, Daybreak currently doesn't allow players to attack while jumping or swing their weapons while running. A fatigue system for entering dungeons and other in-game systems is augmented by heavy emphasis on the cash shop, at least on the game's current Chinese server. Skip below the cut to check out some trailer and gameplay videos for yourself.

  • The Light and How to Swing It: Major AoE healing changes in the Mists beta

Every week, WoW Insider brings you The Light and How to Swing It for holy, protection and retribution paladins. Every Sunday, Chase Christian invites you to discuss the finer side of the paladin class: the holy specialization. Feel free to email me with any questions you want answered, like why paladins are so awesome. Blizzard has been deploying beta patches at a record pace, which has a lot of stale info being bandied about as fact. The official Mists of Pandaria talent calculator is wildly out of date, and much of the commentary made over the past week is now superannuated. The developers haven't been shying away from making major class changes in these early days of the beta, and so everything is still up in the air. What we do know for sure is that there's work being done to modify our holy AoE arsenals specifically. First, Holy Radiance still generates holy power points for us. The holy power generation mechanic was moved from Tower of Radiance and placed directly onto Holy Radiance itself. Other than that, every other piece of our holy toolkit has been updated, and for the better.

  • Cataclysm beta: Paladins in build 12984

In the middle of the night, a new build for the PTR and beta got pushed to the patch servers, but it hasn't been marked as ready for download at the time of this writing (it might be at the time of this reading, though). Several classes have received major changes (including six new talents scattered across druid specs), while others simply got a collection of damage tweaks. Paladins appear to be somewhere in between those. Most of our changes are small tweaks and talent reorganizations, but a few are obvious balancing passes. While there is a new talent for holy, it's just another of the spirit-to-hit conversion talents that other classes have seen. This could, however, mean a possible comeback of the shockadin -- but I'll leave that for Chase to speculate on tomorrow when he covers the holy changes in more depth. Some quick excerpts from the patch notes, with everything after the break: The holy tree gets a spirit-to-hit conversion talent. Holy Light's healing has decreased by 25% and mana cost has increased to 9%. Divine Purpose proc rate has lowered to 20%.

Add another channel to the dial, TV One has announced plans for a simulcast station in the fourth quarter. The channel targeted towards African American adults counts 43 million subscribers, and according to prez Johnathan Rodgers, has always planned for HD but wanted to wait to "make sure our primary channel was well received and on firm footing." No word on which programming will be native HD on the new station or who will carry it, but having beaten BET to the HD punch, it will be interesting to see how this network fills the time. Hopefully we'll get a chance to see Daybreak in its entirety in high definition.
