If not for anything else, this should extend even beyond Presidential Address' ability to compare the audio/video delivery capabilities of different networks, with CNN, Fox, ABC, Fox News, CBS, E! and more broadcasting, plus internet streams available from most (CNN, Sky, CBS, ABC are confirmed), plus Hulu and the StaplesCenter.com website itself. Take a minute to check out the first edition of CBS News Sunday Morning broadcast in high definition, as Charles Osgood anchors the annual "By Design" episode. That means your HDTV will see lots of home tours, a peek into the UCLA Medical Center checking out doctors that are remaking disfigured faces and a report on how retirement is changing for more active elders. Us? We're going back to sleep, two NBA Game 7's and the start of the NHL conference finals make this day a marathon, not a sprint.
Filed under: CBS, Daytime, New content

CBS Sunday Morning News makes the jump to high definition originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 17 May 2009 08:52:00 EST. Just in time for the May sweeps that are now only partially screwed up due to the delayed DTV transition, the longest running soap in the biz -- 46 years and 11,500 episodes -- will be getting a 720p makeover on April 23rd. ABC has spent a tidy $3 million to equip the production facilities for HD, including seven HD cameras and five Panasonic professional plasmas that keep our hearts warm. ABC is hoping the jump to HD will help increase the realism of the show, and while we're never ones to underestimate the power of HD picture quality, we suspect the story lines might need a little more than 720p to get us to suspend our disbelief.

General Hospital prescribes itself a daily dose of 720p originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 07 Apr 2009 21:04:00 EST. Jacksonville residents looking for a new take on the evening news can finally see their dreams come true. As of now, WJXT -- an independent station serving the Florida city and its surrounding communities -- is broadcasting its newscasts in high-definition. At first, the noon broadcast will be the only one in HD, though other airings should follow suit in short order. Locals who rely on DISH Network and DirecTV will sadly be unable to enjoy the new look without an OTA antenna, though WJXT vice president and general manager John Rafferty has assured us that its high-def signal will be picked up by both "soon."

[Thanks, Eric]

WJXT throws the HD lever in Jacksonville, Florida originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 15 Jan 2009 11:44:00 EST. Hotlanta may be feeling the chill of winter right about now, but those looking for one more choice when it comes to watching the evening news in high-def can rejoice. As of this week, the region's CBS affiliate (WGCL) has converted its newscasts to HD, making it the third in Atlanta, Georgia to do so. Also of note, the CBS 46 branding has been trashed in favor of the altogether lovely CBS Atlanta logo you see above, and for those keeping inventory, FOX's WAGA now sits as the only local in the area not broadcasting news in high-definition. Anyone willing to wager that changes soon?

[Thanks, Eric]

Atlanta's CBS affiliate transitions newscasts to high-definition originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 13 Jan 2009 23:42:00 EST. Charm City residents refusing to tune into SD news have had their sets locked on FOX 45 for months now, but 2009 is offering the city of Baltimore yet another option. Starting this weekend, WBAL-TV has flipped the high-def switch on its local news, meaning that you can now catch your favorite NBC talking heads in an all new light. We mean, it really digs you. So much, in fact, that it has taken to heart all those surely kind letters you've sent in over the past few months regarding high-def news. Starting tonight, The City of Brotherly Love has another place to turn for high-definition newscasts, and that place is NBC 10. Reportedly, the station has been constructing an HD studio for months, and it has just now taken the wraps off of everything. Enjoy, Philly, and let us know if you're pleased in comments below.

Philadelphia's NBC 10 brings the high-def love to its newscasts originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 10 Dec 2008 17:15:00 EST. Not getting replaced for the resolution bump? The set, unlike Entertainment Tonight's new digs Broadcasting & Cable reports Live is just throwing a fresh coat of paint on what's there and moving forward. Unfortunately it seems the state of HD syndication ready local stations is still in disarray, so it may be some time before you actually get a look at the improved broadcast in your area, but everyone else should be more than taken care of January 5.
Filed under: ABC, Daytime, New content

Live with Regis and Kelly HD details revealed originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 25 Nov 2008 18:04:00 EST. WSBT-TV, the area's CBS affiliate, became the first in the region to air its newscasts digitally just days ago, and moreover, the first to broadcast in high-definition. Viewers are being treated to clearer views of their favorite anchors and more information on a wider screen platform, including additional weather data on the margins of their TV screens. The station's news director Meg Sauer has also asked for forgiveness if any glitches crop up due to all the new equipment, but we're sure you'll be willing to do so in exchange for an HD quality broadcast.

South Bend, Indiana gets HD news from WSBT-TV originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 18 Nov 2008 17:45:00 EST. Apparently a makeup has been located that will make Regis watchable in high-res (he looked good in a How I Met Your Mother cameo earlier this fall), and with brand new sets all the rage in daytime TV, there's no time like the present. How it took so long is still a mystery to us, after Regis & Kelly jumped into 3-D over two years ago, you'd think moving to HD would be nothing.

Live with Regis and Kelly headed to HD next year originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 12 Nov 2008 10:40:00 EST. As of this week, the Big Apple's FOX affiliate is finally broadcasting its local news in glistening HD. It's one thing to simply fork out some cash for new equipment and pull the lever on HD newscasts, but Lexington, Kentucky's WTVQ-TV is doing it real big when it takes its local news to high-def this month. Starting on October 30th, not only will locals view the evening news in HD, but they'll see a new anchor team, a new news set, a fresh graphics arrangement and revived vivaciousness all around. We've always heard that going all out was the only way to go -- guess we'll see how the ratings react in around a week.

[Thanks, Eric]

Lexington, KY's WTVQ gets major makeover as part of HD news transition originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 26 Oct 2008 18:55:00 EST. The only holdout? The local FOX affiliate WDAF-TV, which apparently has no current plans to join its rivals in showing off anchors in 720p / 1080i. Starting on Sunday, October 26th, WISC-TV will become the first in the region to air all of its regularly-scheduled newscasts in high-definition. Of note, the CBS affiliate has been airing feature stories within its newscast in HD since January of this year, but on Sunday, it will become the first in the area to go wire-to-wire in high-def. The first completely HD newscast will air at 5:30PM on the aforementioned day, and in preparation for the change, the regularly scheduled "News 3 at 5:30" will be preempted for an original special on HDTV and the February 2009 digital television conversion.

WISC-TV to finally deliver HD news in Madison, Wisconsin originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 21 Oct 2008 09:11:00 EST. You're in luck, because CBS affiliate KOVR is finally broadcasting its local newscasts in HD. Another first is coming to Wichita: local news in high-definition. The area's CBS affiliate, KWCH-TV, just began running commercials to get residents psyched up about the impending transition to HD. When it flips the switch sometime later this month, it'll be the first local station in the region to air its newscasts in high-def. Something tells us the others won't be too far behind, though.

[Thanks, Gabe]

Wichita's KWCH taking local news to HD this month originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 04 Oct 2008 05:44:00 EST. Starting this week, the station -- which serves the western parts of both North and South Carolina -- will be broadcasting from its new set and studio, which features a "rotating desk with two different back drops, more than two dozen HD monitors, new HD studio cameras, HD graphics, and the advanced HD 'Sky Watch' Weather Center." The station is just about a year late on being numero uno in the market, as rival WSPA-TV (the local CBS affiliate) took its local news HD in September of last year. As the station slides to a new headquarters at Dearborn and Washington Streets across from Daley Plaza, it will also begin airing its newscasts in beautiful high-definition. We're hearing that ratings have been on the decline of late (that's what you get for not keeping with the program!), but hopefully the switch to HD will be a shot in the arm, er, meter. We sure hope so, as local CBS affiliate WCSC-TV is making the fateful switch on September 29th. According to the South Carolina station, viewers will see a "huge change" in how things look, and aside from that, it's pretty proud of being the first local broadcaster in the state to air its news "completely in high-definition." Later in the day, Entertainment Tonight and The Insider make the jump to 720p/1080i (depending on your local station and if they're ready to handle syndicated HD at all), complete with newly built sets and likely a few extra layers of makeup. Some four months after The Price is Right made the leap to high-definition on Friday nights, the daytime variant of the famed game show has now followed suit. During today's first pricing game, host Drew Carey proudly proclaimed that the show was now airing in HD during the day, after which kids home from school and grandparents with TVs from 1982 celebrated and did nothing, respectively.

[Thanks, Justin]

The Price is Right goes HD in daytime, too originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 16 Jul 2008 13:51:00 EST. This station becomes the first in the city to deliver local newscasts in high-definition, and we're told that three HD cameras will be used in the studio in order to capture anchors in stunning detail. Unfortunately, WAVE won't be replacing the field cameras just yet, so live-on-location reports will still be seen in grainy SD. Oh, and these folks also brought in a makeup consultant in order to handle the whole "now you can see my wrinkles" situation. Just after hearing that the Ellen Degeneres Show would be going HD in a few <strike>short</strike> long months, another daytime favorite (or not, depending on perspective) will also be dipping its toes in the wondrous waters of off-site high-definition. Reportedly, the infamous chit-chat show is set to tape a week of episodes from Sin City next month, as it swoops in on Caesars Palace in Las Vegas from June 23rd through 27th. The excursion will mark the first time The View has broadcast in HDTV while on location, though no details of further involvement were mentioned.

The View to spend in a week in Las Vegas, tape show in HD originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 20 May 2008 22:12:00 EST. With just south of a hundred HD channels on carriers like DirecTV, and even dozens on the average cable operator, one may wonder if there's even a reason for turning to an SD station anymore. Here at the Engadget HD lair, there's only a few programs still shot and delivered in standard-def that we catch ourselves watching, but we'll admit, it's been an awful long time since SD programming consumed more than 10-percent or so of our viewing. Not too tough a question for you this week: do you still find yourself flipping to SD networks with the growing amount of HD content out there? If so, how much? And be honest -- is it solely due to your wife's obsession with America's Next Top Model?

The daily SportsCenter rotation marks time for many a sports junkie, but starting this fall, everything will be different. Timed for the start of the Beijing Olympics, SportsCenter is switching to a live edition from 6 a.m. until 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. News vet Hannah Storm will host from 9 a.m. until noon each day, in an effort to balance with ESPN2's morning programming and ESPNews. Smaller tweaks include a continuous Bottom Line news ticker that scrolls headlines throughout the show and commercial breaks, and an ESPNews-style Rundown vertical listing of upcoming stories. Next spring ESPN takes the wrapper off its Sony-powered LA studio, debuting a 10 p.m. PT / 1 a.m. ET live SportsCenter broadcast skewed for the West Coast. Endless reruns of SportsCenter throughout the night and early morning have been a fixture for more than a decade, this adjustment strikes us on the level of political unrest, a weakening dollar and global climate change.

One thing is for sure, though -- Oprah understands that HD is about more than just sports and nature. Since rolling out her "OWN" network in conjunction with Discovery Health, the one-woman media empire has decided that she can't be outdone by the likes of Big Bird and is bringing her namesake "Oprah Winfrey Show" to HD beginning this fall. We're not sure that the picture quality will make the content more appealing to us personally, but we won't be able to give it the "how good can it be, if it's not in HD?" brush-off anymore!

Oprah's latest giveaway is HD for all originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 15 Apr 2008 13:11:00 EST. Pixel for pixel, we'd take MOJO HD over TBS HD everyday of the week. Why? Because 100-percent of the content aired on the former is in gorgeous high-definition, while the vast majority of material shown on the latter is in ghastly stretch-o-vision. For those that have wondered why certain channels get HD treatment and some don't, Sound and Vision has taken an in-depth look to unearth the reasons why seemingly worthless networks such as QVC have an HD channel lined up while scores of HD junkies can't get their carrier to land SciFi HD, USA HD or dozens of other channels with worthwhile high-def programming. Needless to say, timing and money rank pretty high on the list, but other conveniences such as simulcasting and having loads of "pretty" content available helps nets "jump the line." Hit the read link for the full spill.
Filed under: Industry, Sports, Primetime, Daytime, New content

Timing, money among reasons for channels getting HD treatment originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 04 Apr 2008 11:55:00 EST. Truth be told, The Price is Right has indeed been airing in high-definition for the past couple of weeks just as we heard it would, but we figured it prudent to affirm that yes, the famed game show is indeed now in high-definition. As far as we know, CBS will continue broadcasting the daytime mainstay in high-def after its stint on Friday nights is up, so be sure and set that HD DVR for all you folks holding it down with the 8 to <strike>5</strike> whenever.

[Thanks, Jerry H.]
Filed under: Industry, CBS, Primetime, Daytime

The Price is Right... in HD, of course originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 07 Mar 2008 10:52:00 EST. With BD Live-compatible Blu-ray players, piles of cash and supermodels out of the question, we can choose from ten possible sunrises, which will be whittled down to five episodes broadcast in the third quarter of this year. Each locale represents a vast improvement over our brick wall-facing window so we're not picky, but take a look at the list after the break then hop over to Discovery and tell them what you want to see.
Continue reading Sunrise Earth Viewer's Choice Edition Part Deux

Sunrise Earth Viewer's Choice Edition Part Deux originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 27 Feb 2008 09:26:00 EST. The 24 hour network says one of its biggest challenges is redoing all of the weather graphics for HDTV, while still looking good on 4x3 SDTV screens. The channel will be one of DirecTV's new stations, but also expects to hit cable networks very soon. Cable headends will have to upgrade their equipment to allow for HD inserts of localized weather broadcasts which should be deployed next year. If you're a fan of those "live from the hurricane" shots, the Weather Channel plans to convert those gradually, along with all of its studio-based shows making the change to 1080i by mid-2008.

The Weather Channel HD to debut later this year originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 21 Feb 2007 12:47:00 EST. The show makes it easy to wake up at 7 a.m. and catch a sunrise over a stunning vista instead of an annoying clouded-over glare reflected on an LCD monitor. This year, they've decided to let viewers submit suggestions on what locations to shoot. If you think the world must see sun come up in 1080i over one particular spot that only you know about, check out MyPerfectSunriseEarth.com for info on how to submit it, for a list that will be whittled to 20 locations. Those 20 will be narrowed down to five by a viewer vote, and someone will win a trip to one of them to shoot their own sunrise alongside the show's producer.

[Via PR Web]

Discovery HD's Sunrise Earth: Viewers Choice Edition originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 12 Feb 2007 11:34:00 EST. One particular channel, NewsChannel5, also provides exclusive HD weather and offers up "more than 12 hours of HD programming each day." The station commented that its HD weather capabilities now open up new views of on-scene reports, wider views of radar screens, and can simply keep viewers safer as they see more of what's going on around them. So as you lucky Clevelanders are waking up this morning, just know that you've got more choices than anyone else when it comes to catching the news tonight in crisp HD.
Filed under: Industry, Cable, OTA, Daytime

Cleveland becomes first US city with three HD news channels originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 29 Jan 2007 07:30:00 EST.
