If you've been closely following Meizu, chances are you would've heard about the wild M9 launch across China from just a few days ago. Sadly, said smartphone maker told us that it has absolutely no interest in reaching out to other countries in the near future, but potential foreign buyers now have an option: Hong Kong-based DealExtreme is offering the 8GB Android Froyo device for $449 -- a $70 markup -- with free shipping. Not a bad alternative to the M9's Hummingbird buddy Galaxy S that goes for about $570 sans contract, and bear in mind that the former is still the first Android phone to sport a 3.5-inch 960 x 640 display. Maybe this is a good time to spend your holiday cash. [Thanks, Dave; original image credit: Getty Images]

Okay, while not topical to CES 2011, it could be -- because let's face it, any handset with this amount of whiz (and a dash of bang) deserves its time in the spotlight. The X8 somehow loads dual SIMs, a rotatable 3.2-inch QVGA display paired with a small external screen, quadband GSM, and WiFi tastefully wrapped in a beautiful checked faux-leather finish. Other notables here include TV -- no specs provided -- a VGA camera, and the price: $107.90. Feel free to buy one for every member of your family, as the price tumbles to $106 each in quantities of 10 or more -- with free shipping to boot. [Thanks, MAX]

Dear Aunt TUAW, I bought a brand new multitouch nano, and now I want to accessorize it. But money is tight, and I don't have a lot to spend. I don't really care about "pretty," but I'd like to see what kind of functionality I can get (accessory-wise) on the cheap. Can you recommend any really affordable add-on accessories for my new little pal? Thanks a lot in advance, Your nephew Stephano J.

  • Bending the battery: Using a dock extender to flex your iPhone

Do you use a bottom-connector battery extender? Have you been bothered by the awkward phone geometry that involves? For me, I've found it really hard to deal with the added length, especially with the (tiny!) storage compartment on the top handle of my Jeep stroller. For me, the longer phone-plus-battery length simply doesn't work, which means I can't fit the phone in. That's awkward because I like to use TrailGuru as I walk to go pick up my youngest from school in the afternoon. After a bit of hunting, I've located a way to detach the battery from the phone to create a bending solution that does fit. I recently picked up a Male-to-Female dock extender from DealExtreme for under four bucks (with shipping included). The cable lets me "fold" the battery into place for afternoon walks or stick it into my pocket while using the iPhone on a tether. As far as stroller and backpack use goes, it seems to be working quite well. As for tethering, it's a fairly thick cable, and brings with it all the standard tethered irritations. Frankly, I'm not a big fan of tethered use but when you need that extra battery charge, it's a slight improvement over having the battery pack stuck directly into the bottom of the unit. DealExtreme ships from HongKong, so it generally takes a week or so for packages to arrive. I've bought lots of things from them and they've been reliable shippers. When purchasing from Chinese suppliers, do keep in mind that the individual item fail rate is going to be higher than you might expect: not a constant issue, but something you should factor into your purchases, and something I've certainly experienced.

  • Third party batteries go solar, mega-powered

Do you trust third party batteries? (Because we don't.) If you do, you may be interested in two new battery options discovered on DealExtreme. The first will have any green freak squeeing with glee. It's a solar-powered rechargeable battery solution. We don't know how well it works, but it seems fairly reasonable at $30. The other option is a mega-powered battery cradle for use with the PSP-2000. Supposedly, it'll offer a whopping 4800mAh of power for only $14. Something smells suspicious, potentially burning, at a price like that.[Via PSPGadgetZ]
