Delivery Status touch is a package tracking app that's compatible with more than 30 delivery services worldwide including UPS, FedEX, and DHL. The app tracks multiple packages from multiple sources and looks great on the large screen of the iPad. To use the app, you must have packages with tracking information. Entering tracking information is done manually, though the App does support vendors like Amazon and Apple. With these stores, you have to give login credentials and an order number before the app can pull down the tracking numbers. If you prefer to keep your login information private, you can select the delivery company and add the tracking number directly. Delivery Status touch also syncs to Junecloud's website which lets you manage your packages via a web interface. The main screen of the iPad application lets you view the status of all your packages in one handy location. It even counts down the days until the package will land on your door step. The app packs a lot of information about each package. You can view the package's location on a map, find contact information about the carrier and even pull down order information if your package was purchased from an online merchant and you have linked back to that account. You can also use Delivery Status touch to send a tracking update to yourself or someone else via email. This email sharing is done manually and is not triggered by a change in tracking. Delivery Status touch has almost everything you need to track your packages as they make their way from warehouse to your door step. The only missing feature is native notifications that alert you when there's a change tracking information. You have to launch the app to see if a package has been delivered or delayed. The iPad app does not seem to support iOS notifications and there's no way to setup automatic email or text message notifications from within the app. The solution for notifications provided by Junecloud requires you to have the Mac version of the app running and Junecloud sync account to send notifications to your iOS device. Delivery Status touch is available as a universal app for the iPhone and the iPad for US$4.99.

Utilities are the vegetables of the software world -- not fun, rarely pretty, but gosh darnit, they're good for you. Whether they're checking that your new TV has been mounted square on the wall, crunching your numbers, getting you up in the morning, or keeping track of your mad ramblings in the middle of the night, these little bundles of binary joy can save your job (or your marriage) every time an iPad game almost destroys it. We've taken a close look at a few of the utilities available to iPad owners in the first volley of native, high-resolution apps for the platform and come away with a few winners -- and even better, some of these suckers come at absolutely no cost to you. Follow the break for the full rundown -- and don't forget to check the rest of our app roundups after you're done!

  • Delivery Status touch: obsessive package tracking on the move

For fans of the Delivery Status Dashboard widget (and we are), the wait is over: Delivery Status touch is now available in the App Store for all your mobile package-tracking needs. It replicates the functionality and outstanding design of the original widget, and author Mike Piontek has made getting those unwieldy tracking numbers into the iPhone/touch application as simple as can be. Using an email-based system which runs through Mike's servers, you can add tracking information to Delivery Status touch directly from the Delivery Status widget on your Dashboard. You can also sync a bookmarklet to Mobile Safari or -- especially handy for Windows users with no Dashboard widget -- turn your deliveries into individual bookmarks for syncing. You can, of course, type the numbers in manually if it should come to that. Once you've got some packages to track, tapping the left side of a delivery icon shows a second level of details. A subsequent tap offers links to the tracking page in Mobile Safari and a Maps link which shows the current location of your package. You can then map a route to the destination and get an idea how far your precious cargo has to travel, if you want. If there are multiple packages in your shipment, a small number appears in the icon which you can tap to view the other items. Like the widget, Delivery Status touch offers support for a wide array of shipping services. I think the only thing missing may be the Pony Express. Whether you're an eBay junkie anxiously waiting for your latest score or a corporate user tracking vital pieces of your infrastructure (or one of the rest of us somewhere in the middle), Delivery Status and Delivery Status touch make a winning combination. Delivery Status touch is available in the iTunes App Store for $1.99; this pricing is listed as "introductory" so you might want to get it before it becomes more expensive.
