In a detailed tour of the first <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/21/dell-streak-pro-d43-launched-in-china-where-yi-shall-find-some/">Baidu Yi</a> smartphone, they've unearthed a built-in battery and perused the Super AMOLED Plus qHD display, tempered with Gorilla Glass. The casing is little thick (10.3mm) but by no means a deal-breaker, with a rubberized texture apparently helping to protect the phone if you're a little rough and ready with your devices. The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/baidu/">Baidu</a> platform is <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/aliyun">another</a> Chinese interpretation of Google's feature-set, so you get the likes of email, maps, cloud services and voice input search -- in Mandarin, naturally. If you're intrigued by that Baidu base, scope out the full hands-on (and video walkthrough) over on our Sino sister site.</p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/08/dell-streak-pro-d43-hands-on/">Baidu-powered Dell Streak Pro D43 gets hands-on treatment</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 08 Feb 2012 12:22:00 EST. Just as <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/19/dells-streak-pro-101dl-to-become-baidus-first-yi-phone-shows/">rumored and teased</a> earlier this week, yesterday Dell unveiled the world's first Baidu Yi-powered smartphone dubbed Streak Pro D43. We won't bore you with the hardware details again (the D43's identical to its Japanese Android counterpart <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/29/softbank-takes-dell-streak-pro-101dl-by-the-hand-plans-january/">101DL</a>), but it's worth noting that this dual-core 1.5GHz, quadband HSPA phone focuses on features and services tailored for Chinese users, including some seemingly basic Mandarin voice control (no <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/10/iphone-4s-cleared-for-use-in-china-sino-siri-coming-soon/">pressure</a> on Siri just yet), contacts synchronization, Baidu Chinese input, Yi's own app store and 100GB of free cloud storage that supports multimedia upload and secure file sharing. Essentially, the Yi platform's basically just another Chinese bastardized Android OS sans Google services -- much like Alibaba's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/aliyun">Aliyun</a>, China Mobile's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/ophone">Ophone</a> and Lenovo's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/leos">LeOS</a>; but if you already reside in China and are cool with Baidu's offering, then get a Micro SIM ready and look out for a China Unicom deal soon.<br />

We already knew that Chinese search giant Baidu's been <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/06/baidu-dell-join-forces-to-produce-line-of-smartphones-and-table/">cosying up to Dell</a> to kick-start its very own smartphone ecosystem dubbed <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/05/baidu-announces-android-os-alternative-confirming-its-mobile-as/">Yi</a> (which means "easy" in Chinese), but so far both parties have been mum on the specifics of the hardware. Thankfully, a lucky lady -- some sort of microblogging goddess on Sina Weibo -- managed to get hold of an engineering sample and was kind enough to share some details. Eagle-eyed readers may recall that this is actually Softbank's upcoming <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/29/softbank-takes-dell-streak-pro-101dl-by-the-hand-plans-january/">Streak Pro 101DL</a> Android handset, which has also conveniently just showed up in the FCC database with a V04B moniker and 1,700MHz WCDMA radio -- we've attached its FCC label diagram after the break.<br />
<br />
The specs here match what we've seen before: a 4.3-inch AMOLED 960 x 540 display, Corning glass (presumably Gorilla Glass), dual-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm MSM8260, 8GB of ROM and microSD expansion. For those interested, <em>Tencent Tech</em> has reported that we could see the launch of this phone in China as soon as tomorrow, along with a competitive, unsubsidized price tag of CN&yen;3,000 (about $475). Well, Yi will sure make a fun playmate for its counterpart from Alibaba -- did you know that Jack Ma once called his Aliyun OS an ugly baby? <a href="http://chinese.engadget.com/2011/10/19/jack-ma-talk-alibaba-aliyun-os-mobile-just-like-baby-and-mobile-internet-is-the-next-huge-market-of-china/">True story</a>.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/19/dells-streak-pro-101dl-to-become-baidus-first-yi-phone-shows/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Dell's Streak Pro 101DL to become Baidu's first Yi phone, shows up in FCC's database</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/19/dells-streak-pro-101dl-to-become-baidus-first-yi-phone-shows/">Dell's Streak Pro 101DL to become Baidu's first Yi phone, shows up in FCC's database</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 19 Dec 2011 09:35:00 EST. Wouldn't you know it, but a full year after we originally <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/05/dell-offering-free-venue-pros-to-employees-in-exchange-for-their/">reported</a> the story, Dell has <em>finally</em> made good on that promise to replace its BlackBerry smartphones with the company's own <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/venuepro">Venue Pro</a> handsets -- for the most part, anyway. You see, of the 30,000 BlackBerry units currently in deployment, Dell has swapped approximately 15,000 of them. Still, the glass appears to be half full in <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/dell">Round Rock</a>, with the company's Chief Information Officer, Robin Johnson, touting the alleged cost-savings of the switcheroo. For its part, RIM has called the move a sheer publicity stunt. Hey, why can't it be both?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/18/dell-finally-swaps-blackberry-smartphones-for-venue-pros-now-th/">Dell finally swaps BlackBerry smartphones for Venue Pros, now that nobody else wants one</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 18 Nov 2011 08:01:00 EST. <div>
	The <a href="http://mobile.engadget.com/2010/11/22/dell-streak-android-2-2-froyo-update-review/">Dell Streak 5</a> has always been an outlier, and it's traveled a bumpy road ever since the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/25/dell-streak-official-exclusive-to-o2-uk-in-early-june/">unveiling</a> when Dell insisted its smartphone was in fact a portable tablet. From the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/10/dell-streak-on-sale-august-13-for-300-on-atandt-contract-550-wi/">delayed launch</a> in the US to its $549 price for a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/12/off-contract-dell-streak-is-still-sim-locked-to-atandt-wrongs-sti/">SIM-locked</a> unit -- not to mention the uncomfortably long <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/13/dell-streak-gets-leaked-android-2-1-update-in-uk-still-1-6-in-t/">dance with Donut</a> -- perhaps this moment has been coming for a while. That's right, folks, the Dell Streak 5 is no more. Last month we reported it had been <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/21/dell-quietly-pulls-the-streak-to-perform-an-update-should-bring/">taken off the market</a> while it received a software update, but the hive mind in Round Rock must have changed its sentiments along the way. The company now hosts a web page that declares its spacious smartphone / compact tablet has met end-of-life status, and it's offering little information other than the ominous phrase, "Streak 5 is no longer available." Perhaps spinners such as DJ_Steve will keep the misbegotten wonder alive with projects like <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/25/streakdroid-2-0-0-gives-the-gift-of-gingerbread-to-streak-hacker/">StreakDroid</a>, but for the time being, we're forced to hang our heads to honor the Streak's passing. It's been a great ride, indeed.</div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/11/dell-quietly-kills-streak-5-while-nobodys-looking-mourns-end-o/">Dell quietly kills Streak 5 while nobody's looking, mourns end-of-life status</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 11 Aug 2011 22:43:00 EST. Microsoft this morning added <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/24/microsoft-announces-windows-phone-mango-update-early-and-in/">Acer, Fujitsu and ZTE</a> to its stable of Windows Phone hardware partners, but look at that image above and you'll find one name missing. Yes, Michael Dell's surname is a notable absentee from the group of Mango manufacturers, which prompted us to reach out to someone in charge to see what's what. A Microsoft rep informed us that the company has nothing to announce on that front at present, but urged us to "stay tuned," whatever that may mean. If you're wondering where Nokia is, fret not, it's still <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/24/windows-phone-7-1-will-be-used-on-first-nokia-devices/">very much in Microsoft's future plans</a>, it just got a separate mention. As to Dell? Not a peep in the entire keynote. This comes only a day after a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/23/dell-xps-15z-coming-tomorrow-for-999/"><em>Wall Street Journal</em> article</a> mentioned Dell's intention to reduce its presence in the consumer market and focus on its enterprise strengths -- could an abandonment of Windows Phone be one of those steps?<br />
<br />
<strong>Update:</strong> Dell is not off the list of WP7 hardware manufacturers. Microsoft told us that the Round Rock gang simply isn't one of the "partners ready to go" do the Mango tango right now.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/24/dell-curiously-missing-from-windows-phone-mango-hardware-partn/">Dell curiously missing from Windows Phone 'Mango' hardware partner list, Microsoft says 'stay tuned' (updated)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 24 May 2011 11:01:00 EST. You know, knockoffs are usually meant to be <em>downgrades</em> from the real deal. In the case of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/31/dell-streak-7-review/">Dell's Streak 7</a> tablet, its KIRF version actually has a few advantages over the real deal -- it can make phone calls, has a bigger (3000mAh) battery, comes preloaded with Android 2.3, runs at 1.2GHz, and happens to be cheaper at just under $180 unsubsidized. Of course, its 7-inch WVGA screen relies on resistive technology for touch input, it only has one core, and there's no evidence of this Gingerbread installation actually running, but are you really gonna let such trifling details stand in your way? Hit the source link to get an eyefull of this Welldone tabletphone mashup -- it might not be real, but it's definitely red!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/06/keepin-it-real-fake-the-1-2ghz-dell-streak-that-can-make-phone/">Keepin' it real fake: the 1.2GHz Dell Streak that can make phone calls and run Gingerbread</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 06 May 2011 07:56:00 EST. When AT&amp;T <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/05/samsung-infuse-4g-is-atandts-first-21mbps-smartphone/">launched</a> its Infuse 4G smartphone today, the company also took the opportunity to discuss its plans for upcoming Android and Windows Phone handsets -- as somewhat of a follow-up to the carrier's announcement to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/05/atandt-launching-12-android-devices-in-2011/">release</a> twelve additional Google phones during 2011. Jeff Bradley, Ma Bell's senior vice president of mobile devices, confirmed its next Android phone will be a QWERTY slider from Pantech, featuring a large screen and rugged styling (which he compared to Casio's G-Shock line of watches). Might this be the P8000 we saw <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/12/pantech-p8000-does-android-could-definitely-be-atandt-bound/">gracing</a> the FCC in December?<br />
<br />
On the Windows side, the company added Dell's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/11/dell-venue-pro-aka-lightning-first-hands-on/">Venue Pro</a> to its lineup today, and is gearing up to debut the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/22/htc-hd7s-hands-on/">HD7S</a> -- which will be the last of its first-gen WP handsets, as all future Windows Phone devices will feature Microsoft's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/14/microsofts-latest-wp7-chassis-spec-includes-second-gen-snapdrag/">updated</a> reference platform. Bradley also hinted that AT&amp;T will begin allowing its Android customers to download apps from third-party repositories, starting with Amazon's Appstore -- surely to Mr. Bezos' delight.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/06/atandt-exec-rides-infuse-excitement-reveals-upcoming-plans-for-an/">AT&amp;T exec rides Infuse excitement, reveals upcoming plans for Android and Windows Phone</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 06 May 2011 05:10:00 EST. Sure, it's lacking the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/11/dell-venue-pro-aka-lightning-first-hands-on/">Pro</a> moniker, but it's also lacking a built-in keyboard. A fair trade, we suppose. Dell's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/24/dell-venue-review/">Venue</a> is actually nothing at all like the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/21/dell-lightning-the-ultimate-windows-phone-7-device-leaks-out/">once-titled Lightning</a>, boasting a slate-style form factor and Android 2.2 in place of Windows Phone 7. To this day, it remains one of the few unlocked phones available for sale in the US with support for AT&amp;T's 3G bands, and for those who missed out on the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/04/nexus-one-review/">Nexus One</a> (or just opted for this for any number of other reasons), we're curious to see how your experience with the Thunder has been. Were you impressed / let down by the Stage UI? How'd you manage the heft? Would you have tweaked the build materials any? Opted for WP7 over Froyo? Kept the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/19/exclusive-dell-thunder-prototype-preview-video/">Thunder</a> name? We're guessing that Dell's still squarely in the learning phase when it comes to handset making, so go ahead and get real honest in comments below. Honestly.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/09/how-would-you-change-dells-venue/">How would you change Dell's Venue?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sat, 09 Apr 2011 22:55:00 EST. That's right, it's the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/venue+pro">Venue Pro</a> -- the one that's been struggling to meet demand in the US due to some mysterious <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/14/dell-venue-pros-are-being-reworked-in-the-factories-ship-sch/">reworking</a>. Well, here's some good news for the folks on the other side of the pond: starting today, Dell's UK store is taking orders for this unlocked slider for a hefty &pound;459 ($745), and the first deliveries are expected to arrive in 10 days. Man, these wicked people from Round Rock sure love making us wait, but better late than never, right?<br />

Yes, it's the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/dell,venue">Dell Venue</a>, and no, you <em>still</em> can't buy one outside Hong Kong or South Korea just yet. All we can speculate is that this Android phone is facing the same manufacturing issues as its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/venue+pro">WP7 cousin</a>, but hopefully we're wrong. Anyhow, what matters is that we've finally gotten our hands on a retail unit of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/snapdragon">Snapdragon</a>-packing Venue. So is it worth the wait for Androiders distanced from the Far East? And will this handset be the answer for our love-hate relationship with the <a href="http://mobile.engadget.com/tag/streak,phone">Streak</a>? Head on right past the break to find out.<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">Isn't it fun when you hit the right place at the right time? We just happened to be chillaxing in Hong Kong when Dell chose the city for the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/dell%2Cvenue">Venue's</a> global launch (and it's actually hitting the shops slightly <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/16/dell-venue-thunders-into-korea-this-month-with-android-2-2-and-4/">ahead</a> of South Korea), so a quick hands-on is inevitable. As we've <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/19/exclusive-dell-thunder-prototype-preview-video/">seen</a> previously, this HK$3,999 (US$514) handset is essentially the Venue Pro's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/android">Android</a> 2.2 cousin, sporting the same curved (or "Shear Design") vibrant AMOLED display at 4.1 inches and 800 x 480, but missing the slide-out keyboard. Under the hood lies a 1GHz Snapdragon with 1GB ROM and 512MB RAM, along with the usual microSD expansion, 1400mAh battery, 8 megapixel AF camera with LED flash, Bluetooth 2.3 EDR, WiFi and AGPS.<br />
<br />
There aren't any surprises in terms of software -- the Venue shares the same snappy Stage UI and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/swype">Swype</a> keyboard with the Streak, except for the lack of landscape orientation for the homescreen (and that's with orientation enabled in system settings). As for hardware, the killer feature here is the screen, and we found its curved <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/gorilla+glass">Gorilla Glass</a> to be surprisingly nice for our thumbs while swiping across it. The AMOLED panel underneath is also vibrant with great viewing angles. Elsewhere, build quality is almost solid bar the squeaky battery door, but at least it provides some grip. That's all we got for now -- we'll delve into more details in our forthcoming review, so stay tuned.<br />

Couldn't stay up till <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/20/josh-is-on-late-night-with-jimmy-fallon-tonight-its-a-holiday/">12:37AM</a>? We'll forgive you... in time. Thankfully, the wonders of the internet are enabling you to travel back to catch our own Josh Topolsky's holiday jam party with Late Night's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/JimmyFallon/">Jimmy Fallon</a>. The duo ran through a gauntlet of gadgets, including B&amp;N's Nook Color, Samsung's Galaxy Tab, D-Link's Boxee Box, Apple's MacBook Air, Dell's Venue Pro and the Gingerbread-equipped <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/NexusS/">Nexus S</a>. Also appearing: teenage jokes, visions of a lunar eclipse, legally / illegally downloaded content and the Nexus X. Yeah, the <i>X</i>. See what we mean in the pair of videos just past the break.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/21/josh-talks-holiday-gadgets-on-late-night-with-jimmy-fallon-vide/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Josh talks holiday gadgets on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/21/josh-talks-holiday-gadgets-on-late-night-with-jimmy-fallon-vide/">Josh talks holiday gadgets on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 21 Dec 2010 12:35:00 EST. Dell's keeping up its usual habit of sneaking devices out with today's announcement of the Dell Venue for launch in South Korea. Local carrier KT has revealed the details of this <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/19/exclusive-dell-thunder-prototype-preview-video/">4.1-inch Android 2.2 device</a> (sans keyboard, unlike its WP7 cousin the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/11/dell-venue-pro-aka-lightning-first-hands-on/">Venue Pro</a>), which is set to arrive by the end of this month at a price of 700,000KRW ($606). Formerly known by its codename of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/dell,thunder">Thunder</a>, this has actually been one of the most hotly anticipated Android handsets of the year, though the only other information confirmed by KT so far is that it'll have a curved Gorilla Glass screen. We're sure a US launch can't be far behind.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/16/dell-venue-thunders-into-korea-this-month-with-android-2-2-and-4/">Dell Venue Thunders into Korea this month with Android 2.2 and 4.1-inch Gorilla Glass screen</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 16 Dec 2010 06:11:00 EST. Dell Streak. Froyo. Need we say more? If you're not already getting giddy, let us remind you that said tabletphone's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/20/dell-streaks-pre-rooted-android-2-1-update-quietly-suspended-r/">technically</a> still <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/15/dell-streak-likely-going-straight-to-froyo-in-us/">stuck</a> on the aging Android 1.6 OS, so this is obviously great news for all anticipating (and presumably very patient) users. Well, the handful of us anyway, given the majority's distaste for this five-inch device's abnormal form factor. Here at Engadget, we've been fortunate enough to give this final 2.2 build a thorough test over the weekend, but has it fixed the bugs that plagued the 2.1 release? And will it make the Streak relevant again? Read on to find out.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/dell-streak-android-2-2-froyo-update-hands-on/">Dell Streak Android 2.2 (Froyo) update review</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/dell-streak-android-2-2-froyo-update-hands-on/#3595605"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/mobile.engadget.com/media/2010/11/streakfroyog2010-11-22-0_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/dell-streak-android-2-2-froyo-update-hands-on/#3595606"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/mobile.engadget.com/media/2010/11/streakfroyog2010-11-22-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/dell-streak-android-2-2-froyo-update-hands-on/#3595607"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/mobile.engadget.com/media/2010/11/streakfroyog2010-11-22-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/dell-streak-android-2-2-froyo-update-hands-on/#3595608"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/mobile.engadget.com/media/2010/11/streakfroyog2010-11-22-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/dell-streak-android-2-2-froyo-update-hands-on/#3595609"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/mobile.engadget.com/media/2010/11/streakfroyog2010-11-22-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/22/dell-streak-android-2-2-froyo-update-review/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Dell Streak Android 2.2 (Froyo) update review</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/22/dell-streak-android-2-2-froyo-update-review/">Dell Streak Android 2.2 (Froyo) update review</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 22 Nov 2010 18:01:00 EST. We're finding it hard to hold back our enthusiasm for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/11/dell-venue-pro-gives-wp7-a-4-1-inch-qwerty-slider-with-lightning/">Dell's Windows Phone 7 slider</a>, but come launch day the 4.1-inch <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/VenuePro/">Venue Pro</a> may be a tricky one to find -- you'll need to line up at one of only seven Microsoft retail stores on November 8th (<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/22/dell-venue-pro-gets-expansys-listing-499-99-for-november-8th/">a likely date</a>) if this allegedly leaked document is right. If you're willing to wait until November 15th, however, there's also Dell itself, which will apparently double as the only place you'll be able to go to get any support for the T-Mobile device. Neither niggle will stop us from nabbing one, however. For all we know, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/21/dell-lightning-the-ultimate-windows-phone-7-device-leaks-out/">Lightning</a> might not strike Windows Phone 7 twice.<br />

Not much detail here, just some vagaries uttered by Michael Dell at an event in Hong Kong. According to <em>Reuters</em>, Mr. Dell said that it's easier to develop smartphones using Microsoft's Windows operating system than Google's Android. Something that he, or at least his developers, should know something about having dabbled a bit <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/wp7%2Cdell">on</a> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/android,dell">both</a> platforms. Unfortunately, that's all we've got -- hopefully more details will be revealed later to give this some context. Switching gears, he also said that Dell would be launching a "<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/29/dell-launching-7-inch-tablet-in-next-few-weeks-10-incher-to-f/">significant number</a>" of tablet PC models next year. <em>Next year</em> huh? What happened to Dell's 7-inch Looking Glass tablet that was coming in "<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/29/dell-launching-7-inch-tablet-in-next-few-weeks-10-incher-to-f/">a few weeks</a>" now more than one month ago?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/02/michael-dell-developing-windows-smartphones-easier-than-andro/">Michael Dell: Developing Windows smartphones 'easier' than Android</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 02 Nov 2010 05:40:00 EST. Dell's product placement deal with CBS apparently doesn't stipulate whether its gadgets will be used for good or evil, as illustrated by their cameo appearances on the network's <em>NCIS:LA</em> crime drama. In last night's episode, lead do-gooder Special Agent Callen is seen preparing a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/20/dell-streak-review-redux-thoughts-from-the-new-world/">Streak</a> tabletphone for some audio recording action before a meeting with the baddies -- who in turn whip out an <a href="http://www.engadget.com/all/adamoxps">Adamo XPS</a> (yes, it's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/18/dell-adamo-xps-alive-and-kicking-back-for-order-on-dell-com/">still alive</a>!) to seal a deal for some ultra-advanced weaponry. Yep, it's a non-stop clich&eacute; extravaganza!<br />

Oh, sure -- our international contemporaries have been <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/06/dell-streak-review/">toying</a> with the Dell <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Streak/">Streak</a> for the better part of 2010, but Americans have <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/06/dell-streak-review/">just recently</a> had their equal opportunity to indulge. It's a mini tablet, or a huge phone. Or both. And sometimes neither. But whatever the case may be on any given Sunday, the 5-inch Streak has caused more of a stir for the folks in Round Rock than any product since the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Adamo/">Adamo</a>. For those who eagerly pre-ordered and then not-so-eagerly paid the credit bill upon receipt, we're interested in knowing exactly how things are going so far. Are you still stoked about having a 5-inch phone? Would you have made it any larger / smaller? Changed the casing? Made it available on another carrier? Thrown in a slide-out QWERTY keyboard? Let us know in comments below, capiche?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/25/how-would-you-change-dells-streak/">How would you change Dell's Streak?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sat, 25 Sep 2010 01:11:00 EST. Oh <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/michael+dell">Michael</a>, such a teaser you are. Word has it that the head honcho of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/dell">Dell Inc.</a> has just pulled out yet another <a href="http://www.engadget.com/product/android">Android</a> tablet from his pocket, only this time it's a 7-inch whopper. Sadly, Mr. Dell left us high and dry with dates and specs <strike>(and the lack of photos from the event doesn't help, either)</strike>, but we'll bet you that this is the long-rumored <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/21/dell-looking-glass-tablet-leaks-tegra-2-coming-your-way-in-nove/">Looking Glass</a>. On a more solid note, Dell also announced that the smaller <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/dell%2Cstreak">Streak</a> is heading to Best Buy next month. That's great, except some of us would rather see the tabletphone getting its share of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/froyo">Froyo</a> sooner -- here's hoping that this bigger tablet won't disappoint us with an outdated OS.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update: </strong>As it just so happens, <em>Reuters</em> snapped a pic of Mr. Dell himself holding the tablet on stage, and sure enough, it resembles <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/21/dell-looking-glass-tablet-leaks-tegra-2-coming-your-way-in-nove/">that leaked Looking Glass</a> even from quite a distance away.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/22/michael-dell-teases-new-7-inch-android-tablet-says-streak-to-la/">Michael Dell teases new 7-inch Android tablet, says Streak to land in Best Buy next month (update: pic)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 22 Sep 2010 15:01:00 EST. Ruh roh. Looks like <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/tag/dell">Dell's</a> stepped onto its own toes real hard with the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/30/dell-streak-to-get-official-android-2-1-update-on-september-1st/">Streak's Android 2.1 update</a> -- <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/o2">O2</a> just confirmed to us that due to some "feedback from users," it's decided to suspend said download while Dell gets cranking on a revised software release over the next two or three weeks. We weren't given the exact reasons behind this quiet withdrawal, but our friends over at <em>MoDaCo</em> might have had the answer for some time -- soon after the release, they discovered that the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/eclair">2.1</a> firmware was in fact <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/android,root">pre-rooted</a>, thus leaving the Streak vulnerable to unauthorized access and modification (although handy for the seriously tech-minded). Yikes. On the bright side, such substantial time frame suggests that the upcoming fix should also address other bugs like incompatibility with the desktop suite, weird loading behavior in the browser, and missing WMV video playback functionality. <br />
<br />
And here comes the inevitable question: what about <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/froyo">Froyo</a>? Well, neither Dell nor O2 could provide a date for the Streak's scoop of frozen dessert, but we'll bet you a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/whiteiphone4">white iPhone 4</a> that it won't be out in October.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/20/dell-streaks-pre-rooted-android-2-1-update-quietly-suspended-r/">Dell Streak's pre-rooted Android 2.1 update quietly suspended, revision coming in two or three weeks</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 20 Sep 2010 17:08:00 EST. Christmas came early at Engadget HQ this year, as evidenced by the picture above -- you're looking at <em>two</em> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/DellThunder/">Dell Thunder</a> prototype smartphones, each with some surprising quirks, and hints that they might include global HSPA, AWS for the likes of T-Mobile, and maybe even a dash of CDMA support. We'll warn you ahead of time that these are labeled EVT1 for "engineering verification test" and date back to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/21/dell-thunder-explodes-android-with-4-1-inch-oled-screen-promise/">the April leak</a>, so they're about as early as you can get -- don't expect the final handset to arrive without some significant differences. Good? Then peek the gallery below, hit the break, and let's get on with the show. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/dell-thunder-early-hands-on/">Dell Thunder prototype preview</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/dell-thunder-early-hands-on/#3278839"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/08/8-19-10-thunder80008_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/dell-thunder-early-hands-on/#3278841"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/08/8-19-10-thunder80009_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/dell-thunder-early-hands-on/#3278847"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/08/8-19-10-thunder80012_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/dell-thunder-early-hands-on/#3278845"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/08/8-19-10-thunder80011_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/dell-thunder-early-hands-on/#3279643"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/08/8-19-10-thunder800014_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/19/exclusive-dell-thunder-prototype-preview-video/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Exclusive: Dell Thunder prototype preview (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/19/exclusive-dell-thunder-prototype-preview-video/">Exclusive: Dell Thunder prototype preview (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 19 Aug 2010 18:58:00 EST. What is there to do on a cloudy Friday in Britain? Why, scouring the web for your phone's firmware update, of course. That's probably how a <em>MoDaCo</em> member unearthed the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/streak%2Cdell">Dell Streak's</a> latest <a href="http://www.engadget.com/product/android">Android</a> 2.1 build (apparently just for locked O2 devices), anyway. Sure, the link's quirky domain name and sluggish speed may arouse some suspicion, but our sources have confirmed that this non-final update is indeed coming from Dell (and you can expect the link to be killed soon). Many users -- including ourselves -- are reporting a successful update and enjoying the same goodies we spotted in our <a href="http://mobile.engadget.com/2010/08/05/dell-streak-with-android-2-1-update-exclusive-preview/">preview</a>: 720p camcorder, a much improved keyboard, live wallpapers, etc. Fancy giving it a shot? Here's how: copy the .pkg file to the SD card, rename it to "Update.pkg," then boot the Streak into recovery mode (hold down both volume keys and then power on), and finally choose to recover from said file (your phone <em>will be wiped!</em>). Of course, as with any firmware updates, make sure you have some sort of backup somewhere and tread carefully.<br />
<br />
In other news: as <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/10/dell-streak-on-sale-august-13-for-300-on-atandt-contract-550-wi/">promised</a>, Dell's AT&amp;T Streak ordering page went live today, and yes, it'll still be shipped with Android 1.6. Looks like <em>xda-developers</em> and <em>MoDaCo</em> are well on course to beat Dell on releasing a 2.1 or even a 2.2 update.<br />
<br />
[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]<br />

<strong>Update: </strong>Looks like someone's <a href="http://android.modaco.com/index.php?s=&amp;showtopic=315788&amp;view=findpost&amp;p=1376331">managed</a> to get this firmware working on an officially unlocked Streak. We've got some good news and some bad news for fellow <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/streak%2Cdell">Streak</a>-wielding chums. The bad news is that said Dell tabletphone won't be getting its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/froyo">Froyo</a> update in September -- well, in the UK at least. The good news, however, is that O2 will be squeezing out a 2.1 firmware to fill the void around early next month, which probably implies that the unlocked devices will also get the update slightly earlier, if not at the same time. Now, Dell's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/27/dell-shows-off-android-2-1-running-on-the-streak-still-planning/">lightning demo</a> of the Streak's Eclair build last week might have been a tad underwhelming, but as we found out in the software exclusively sent to us today, turns out there's actually more than just a new unlock screen and live wallpaper support. Read on to find out.<br />

<strong>Update: </strong>Since you guys asked, here are some benchmark scores we obtained: 6.949 MFLOPS on Linpack, 767 on Quadrant, 30fps on Fps2D, and 3521 on An3DBench. So, you've either purchased a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Streak/">Streak</a>, or you're <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/21/dell-streak-available-for-purchase-in-late-july-says-us-produ/">anxiously awaiting your own</a> here in the US. Fantastic. Now what? If you've just over $100 to spend and even a pinch of smarts, you'll give strong consideration to Logitech's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/05/logitechs-dinovo-mini-keyboard-and-z-cinema-speakers/">diNovo Mini</a>. Though launched around two years ago, this portable Bluetooth keyboard looks like a match made in heaven for Dell's newfangled 5-inch smartphone, with the cover holding the Streak (almost) perfectly in order to create a makeshift Android laptop. Better still, the Bluetooth device pairs seamlessly with Dell's doodad, and both the keys <em>and</em> finger pad operate sans any major issues. But hey, it's not like you ought to be taking our word for it -- head on past the break to see the magic happen on video, and dig down in that source link for even more inspiration. It might just convince your cold, hardened heart that love does indeed exist.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/24/dell-streak-makes-friends-with-logitech-dinovo-mini-in-more-way/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Dell Streak makes friends with Logitech diNovo Mini (in more ways than one)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/24/dell-streak-makes-friends-with-logitech-dinovo-mini-in-more-way/">Dell Streak makes friends with Logitech diNovo Mini (in more ways than one)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sat, 24 Jul 2010 20:01:00 EST. Well, the Brits ain't gonna be happy when they see this in the AM. What we're looking at here is presumably the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/dell,streak">Dell Streak's</a> final US packaging -- a far cry from the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/dell-streak-review/">cardboard boxes</a> that the Englishmen are given (and let's not forget the silly <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/dell-streak-review/#3046786">photoshop error</a> on the top). If the features list is correct, this five-inch Android phone is definitely headed to AT&amp;T's 850MHz 3G band for now (hang in there, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/19/dell-mini-5-gets-fcc-approval-again-this-time-with-t-mobile-fla/">T-Mobile</a> fans). Other than that, the accessories and the phone itself look identical to what <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/06/dell-streak-review/">we've got</a> in London, but we totally wouldn't mind getting hold of this sexy acrylic box -- it'd make a pretty cool cradle, don't you think? Head over to the source link to feed your eyes.<br />

Look what we have here? The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/dell,streak">Dell Streak</a> sure keeps bringing us more and more surprises -- unlike most <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/android">Android</a> devices that lack the Bluetooth HID profile, here it is paired up with our wireless keyboard and mouse (Apple's Wireless Keyboard and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/magicmouse">Magic Mouse</a>, specifically) without any driver hacks. <em>Streak Smart</em>, who made this discovery, had the same experience as us with its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/18/switched-on-stowaway-from-the-pda-era/">iGo Stowaway</a> keyboard and an unknown mouse -- typing was as smooth as cutting butter with a hot knife, but the mouse couldn't do much due to the lack of pointer and scrolling support. If you insist, the forthcoming <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/nokia,n8">Nokia N8</a> is confirmed to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/16/nokia-n8-meets-bluetooth-mouse-and-keyboard-has-a-good-time-vi/">support</a> both devices natively, but it shouldn't be long before we see a mouse hack for the green bot. Hands-on video after the break, and do also head over to the source link if you need more convincing.<br />
<br />
P.S. -- Since commenter dudeville was asking, here's how to pair the Apple keyboard with the Streak: type a four-digit PIN on the phone when prompted, then type the same number on the keyboard and press the enter key. Good luck!<br type="_moz" /><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/21/dell-streak-gets-cozy-with-bluetooth-keyboard-and-mouse-suddenl/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Dell Streak gets cozy with Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, suddenly looks small (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/21/dell-streak-gets-cozy-with-bluetooth-keyboard-and-mouse-suddenl/">Dell Streak gets cozy with Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, suddenly looks small (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 21 Jun 2010 20:38:00 EST. Consider this: you may have an <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/android">Android</a> phone with a front-facing camera, and so do your distant loved ones (yes, friends count too). Now slap that free IM app <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/fring">Fring</a> onto your phone, and the once-dormant chat camera shall finally come to life -- right now only the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/dell%2Cstreak">Streak</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/htc%2Cevo+4g">EVO 4G</a> are supported, whereas the others (like the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/sony+ericsson%2Cx10">X10</a>) will have to rely on their main cameras. Still, Fring also supports dual-camera <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/symbian">Symbian</a> devices plus Skype video calls to and from computers, and since it isn't locked down to any particular connection method, users with unlimited data allowance get to make free 3G video calls! Take that, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/07/facetime-video-calling-added-to-iphone-4/">FaceTime</a>. Yes, we're still waiting on the official release of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/dell,streak">Dell Streak</a> over here in the colonies, but abroad it's already available, and <em>MoDaCo</em>'s Paul O'Brien has taken his to the root. He's figured out how to make the Streak a more willing partner for your su exploits, and has kindly shared the details. The application process looks easy, just a few steps, and from what we can tell looks to be fully functional, with only the remount command requiring some extra finesse to get working. You can find the full details at the source link and have yours rooted in time for tea.<br />

Streak. It needs no introduction, as this slate's been gaining a lot of attention amongst gadget lovers around the world. Thanks to the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/25/dell-streak-official-exclusive-to-o2-uk-in-early-june/">UK launch</a> last Friday, we were one of the first on this planet to procure Dell's finalized Android 1.6 phone from O2. Yep, you heard right -- Engadget's now in possession of two Streaks, with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/19/dell-mini-5-prototype-impressions/">the older one</a> still in its original and somewhat unstable prototype state. Our new toy sports a matte "carbon" finish instead of chrome (no word on future availability; the red version's coming in two weeks' time), and now 399MB of RAM instead of 405MB (according to Android System Info app; it's actually a 512MB chip). Anyhow, now that we have the real deal, there's plenty to go through, so join us after the break to see if the Streak's really going to start a new trend.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/dell-streak-review/">Dell Streak review</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/dell-streak-review/#3045306"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/dellstreak2010-06-04-5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/dell-streak-review/#3045311"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/dellstreak2010-06-04-9_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/dell-streak-review/#3046786"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/dellstreak2010-06-05-0_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/dell-streak-review/#3045430"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/dellstreak2010-06-04-61_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/dell-streak-review/#3045356"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/dellstreak2010-06-04-51_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/06/dell-streak-review/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Dell Streak review</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/06/dell-streak-review/">Dell Streak review</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sun, 06 Jun 2010 18:03:00 EST. We'd heard through the grapevine that the engineers at Round Rock were working on a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/07/dell-slate-exclusive-hands-on/">number of slates</a> to fill the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/09/leaked-dell-mini-5-flyer-shows-multitude-of-color-options-confi/">Streak lineup</a>, but man, we didn't see this coming... at least not yet. A couple of images along with an internal Dell announcement landed on our virtual doorstep this fine morning, and lo and behold, it looks as if a 7-inch and 10-inch Streak tablet is on the horizon. But that's not all -- we learned that the "<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/23/dell-aero-first-hands-on/">coming soon</a>" we heard earlier regarding the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Aero/">Aero</a>'s release date on AT&amp;T really means "June." Later this "summer," said phone will be joined by the Streak 5 (yeah, that's the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/19/dell-mini-5-prototype-impressions/">Mini 5 we've had</a> for months now) for those who prefer a more capable mobile. As for the 7-inch Streak? Look for it to launch (presumably with or without AT&amp;T support) late in 2010, while a 10-inch flavor follows in "early 2011." Is <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2004/06/09/save-sidetalkin/">Sidetalkin'</a> really about to return? We're ready -- <i>so</i> ready.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update</strong>: Dell hit us up with a totally corporate line when we dug deeper for details:<blockquote>

Occasionally we've had strangers -- very likely non-Engadget readers -- coming up to us and ask, "Sorry mate, but is that the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/ipad">iPad</a>?" To which we reply, "No, it's the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/dell+mini+5">Dell Mini 5</a>." This may sound like a silly boo-boo to make, but there <em>is</em> this common misconception of the iPad being just "a bigger iPhone" while not knowing <em>how much bigger</em> it is (despite our <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/27/ipad-vs-iphone-fight/">best effort</a>). To clear this up once and for all, we've brought the two devices in question together -- the Mini 5 / Streak smartphone on the left, and the iPad on the right. Now it's up to you guys to spread the love.<br />
<br />
As a bonus, we also threw in various phones -- <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/htc+hd+mini">HTC HD mini</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/nexus+one">Nexus One</a>, Sony Ericsson <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/xperia+x10">Xperia X10</a>, and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/htc+hd2">HTC HD2</a> -- to pile on top of Apple's latest toy, just to kill the Sunday afternoon. No magical and revolutionary devices were harmed in the making of this article.<br />
<br />

Here she is, folks -- Dell's first-ever Android device destined for a Stateside release, and AT&amp;T's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/22/dell-aero-is-atandts-second-android-phone/">second overall</a> handset (the first being the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Backflip/">Backflip</a>) with a Google-based operating system. At CTIA's MobileFocus event, we were able to brush up against a fully functional <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/23/dell-aero-is-the-lightest-android-smartphone-poses-for-pictur/">Aero</a> (shown beside a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Mini3/">Mini 3</a>, just for your information), but we left without seeing the actual home screen. The closest we came to witnessing <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Android/">Android</a> 1.5 boot up was the typical <a href="http://engadget.com/tag/att">AT&amp;T</a> intro screen, and once that popped up, our presenter promptly popped the battery out in order to stop what would've otherwise been a truly momentous occasion. We begged and pleaded for a few interface shots, but Dell insisted that AT&amp;T was holding an invisible gun to its head in order to keep the screen dimmed. We were told that the interface was still being tweaked, and the carrier simply wasn't ready for the world at large to take a peek. <br />
<br />
Outside of that, we learned that this will indeed be the planet's lightest Android phone ever when it ships (believe us, it was <i>light)</i>, and while v1.5 will be onboard, Dell seemed confident that 2.1 (and beyond) would be made available shortly after launch. We were also told that it would ship with a 5 megapixel camera (a step up from the Mini 3's 3 megapixel shooter), an undisclosed amount of internal storage, a new color / design scheme (the one you see here will be the only shade available at launch) and a 2GB microSD card bundled in at purchase. You'll also find a good deal of AT&amp;T baked into the OS, but it's not like you should be surprised to hear of carrier meddling. Finally, we were informed that pricing would be set by AT&amp;T, and that it would be shipping "soon" -- far sooner than "six months from now" -- from both AT&amp;T and Dell channels (though not available unlocked from the latter). There's also the possibility that Dell could arrange some sort of Aero / <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/20/atandts-subsidized-acer-aspire-one-dell-mini-10-and-lenovo-s10-n/">Mini 10</a> combo deal for those looking to really sink their teeth into a hefty AT&amp;T contract, but there's nothing substantial to go on just yet in that department. Enough chit-chat -- give the gallery below a look to see what's coming your way. <br />

AT&amp;T's teaser site for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/22/dell-aero-is-atandts-second-android-phone/">the Dell Aero</a> has gone live and we can now fill in a few more gaps in our knowledge about this forthcoming handset. It's looking every bit the renamed <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/06/dell-mini-3-headed-to-atandt/">Mini 3</a> we thought it was, so click <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/07/dell-mini-3-lightning-hands-on/">here</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/11/13/dell-mini-3i-unboxed-in-china-capacitive-stylus-included/">here</a> to get a closer look at the body of the device. The official web mouthpiece confirms a 3.5-inch screen with nHD resolution -- which may or may not signify the same 640 x 360 as on the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/11/13/dell-mini-3i-officially-set-for-imminent-launch-in-brazil-and-ch/">Brazilian and Chinese versions</a> -- and one definite point of departure, a 5 (<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/06/dell-mini-3-headed-to-atandt/">rather than 3</a>) megapixel camera on the back. Claimed to be the lightest Android smartphone yet, the Aero will also come with WiFi and GPS built in, though its biggest attraction will undoubtedly be the thoroughly tricked out Android UI, which promises Picasa, Flickr, Facebook, YouTube, and Twitpic integration right out of the box. Check out the gallery below for some hints of what that will look like.<br />

Well isn't this good to know. The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/19/dell-mini-5-prototype-impressions/">Mini 5</a> isn't even coming out for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/29/michael-dell-pulls-mini-5-android-tablet-from-his-parka-offers/">at least another month</a>, yet already we're hearing Dell has big plans for what's to follow. <em>Wired</em> has the dish straight from Neeraj Choubey, GM of Dell's tablet division, that there will be "a family of tablets" which will "scale up to a variety of sizes." It appears there will be a common feature set throughout the forthcoming portfolio, so it's likely going to be Android all the way, while Choubey also shared his company's intention to bundle "inexpensive data plans" with the new devices -- indicating a belief that carriers will accede to such ambitious ideas. And speaking of network operators, in a separate interview with <em>Laptop</em>, the loquacious gentleman has confirmed that Dell's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/05/dell-mini-5-earns-fcc-approval-atandt-3g-coverage-assured/">working with AT&amp;T</a> on bringing the Mini 5 to the masses. Good to know, indeed -- now how about a release date?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/26/dell-mini-5-to-be-the-vanguard-of-a-family-of-tablets/">Dell Mini 5 to be the vanguard of 'a family of tablets'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 26 Feb 2010 10:29:00 EST. Wow, some nice gadget fairy has just made our wish come true! Soon after our <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/19/dell-mini-5-prototype-impressions/3#c25615483">Dell Mini 5 impressions</a> post went live, eagle-eyed reader unclepain <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/19/dell-mini-5-prototype-impressions/3#c25615354">reported</a> that the phone's docking station has made a quiet appearance in T3 Greek Edition's bizarre hands-on video (seriously, we get the "<strong>DELL</strong>ICIOUS" joke, but does that poor bloke really have to stand like that throughout the video?). According to the tiny bit of English we heard, the dock will have HDMI output and a USB port (for connecting to the computer, we presume) on the back. You can also see the short transparent back support when the presenter undocks the phone. Now, bundle this with Mini 5 or throw it &agrave; la carte at a reasonable price and we're sold. Eccentric footage after the break.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/dell-mini-5-docking-station-spotted-in-bizarre-hands-on-video/">Dell Mini 5 docking station with HDMI port spotted in bizarre Greek video</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/dell-mini-5-docking-station-spotted-in-bizarre-hands-on-video/#2726759"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/02/screen-shot-2010-02-19-at-20.01.49_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/dell-mini-5-docking-station-spotted-in-bizarre-hands-on-video/#2726756"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/02/screen-shot-2010-02-19-at-19.54.53_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/dell-mini-5-docking-station-spotted-in-bizarre-hands-on-video/#2726757"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/02/screen-shot-2010-02-19-at-19.55.08_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/dell-mini-5-docking-station-spotted-in-bizarre-hands-on-video/#2726758"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/02/screen-shot-2010-02-19-at-19.55.59_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />

Dell's puzzled the world <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/21/dell-streak-is-a-5-inch-android-2-0-mid-packs-3g-and-wifi-vide/">for quite some time</a> with its outlandish <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/mini+5">Mini 5</a> / Streak -- at first glance it's just another <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/android%2Cmid">Android-based MID</a>, but a quick fiddle with it reveals the full-fledged 3G phone inside. So will it fit in a pocket? Can we carry it around like a normal phone? Is this the future form factor that will bring the ultimate balance between portability and practicality? With such heavy dose of curiosity, we eventually traveled all the way to Shenzhen literally just to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/11/dell-mini-5-we-have-it/">grab</a> this prototype. Now, before you read on, do bear in mind that some of its features -- <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/15/dell-mini-5-will-run-something-newer-than-android-1-6-at-launc/">especially the OS</a> -- may not make it to the final design when it comes out later this year, nor do we know what stage this prototype was at. We good? OK.<br />
<br />
Let's start with the basics: the main specs on our unit include <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/android">Android</a> 1.6 (which will <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/15/dell-mini-5-will-run-something-newer-than-android-1-6-at-launc/">definitely be obsolete</a> for the final product), five-inch 800 x 480 capacitive touchscreen, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/18/dell-mini-5-teardown-reveals-snapdragon-guts-and-3g-sim-video/">Snapdragon</a> QSD8250 chipset (with CPU clocked at 1GHz), Bluetooth, WiFi, GPS and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/05/dell-mini-5-earns-fcc-approval-atandt-3g-coverage-assured/">WCDMA radio</a>. Sadly, we have no info on whether the Mini 5 will have other cellular radio options, but it wouldn't hurt to send Dell a petition regarding this matter. For those who want the dimensions and weight in numbers, it's about 152mm x 78mm x 10mm at 8 ounces (including the battery, which lasts for almost a day for normal usage on 3G). Memory-wise there's 405MB RAM and 1.63GB of internal storage -- a slight let-down for the latter, so let's hope the retail unit will be given a more generous dose of silicon. You can add a microSD card next to the battery on the back, but it appears that the mysterious second card slot we saw in the earlier <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/18/dell-mini-5-teardown-reveals-snapdragon-guts-and-3g-sim-video/">teardown</a> only gave us false hope -- we couldn't find a way to get to it without prying open the housing. Connection to your computer relies on a proprietary port -- similar but slightly larger than the iPod's -- to USB cable, which may suggest that we will see some more peripherals made for the Mini 5 and its future siblings. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/dell-mini-5-prototype-impressions/">Dell Mini 5 / Streak prototype impressions</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/dell-mini-5-prototype-impressions/#2722619"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/02/mini522010-02-18-27_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/dell-mini-5-prototype-impressions/#2707766"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/02/mini522010-02-13-25_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/dell-mini-5-prototype-impressions/#2724989"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/02/mini52010-02-19-5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/dell-mini-5-prototype-impressions/#2707763"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/02/mini522010-02-13-22_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/dell-mini-5-prototype-impressions/#2707745"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/02/mini522010-02-13-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/19/dell-mini-5-prototype-impressions/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Dell Mini 5 / Streak prototype impressions</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/19/dell-mini-5-prototype-impressions/">Dell Mini 5 / Streak prototype impressions</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 19 Feb 2010 12:16:00 EST.
