Good Technology released its Q4 2012 Device Activation Report (PDF) yesterday, and the news is good for Apple in terms of its dominance of in the enterprise market. But there are some dark clouds on the horizon for the computer company in the form of Android tablets, which are making inroads into large companies. Good tracks more than 4,000 customers in every major industry, with half of the Fortune 100 being represented as well. The report shows that Apple had the top five spots for device activations in the fourth quarter of 2012 and more than 90 percent of all tablets activated by enterprises were iPads. Not surprisingly, the most popular device in big business was the iPhone 5, which accounted for 32 percent of all activations for Q4. The iPhone 5 was followed by the iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, third-generation iPad and second-generation iPad in terms of total activations, with the top Android device -- the Samsung Galaxy S III -- coming in at the sixth slot. iPads completely dominate the tablet market at this time, accounting for 93.2 percent of all enterprise tablet activations in Q4. Android tablets are starting to make inroads, however -- in the first quarter of 2012, they only accounted for 2.7 percent of all activations with that number growing to 6.8 percent by Q4. The full report also provides a breakdown of iPad activations by industry, showing that the devices are tremendously popular in the financial services sector. [via The Loop]

It depends on how you count the numbers (doesn't it always?) but it looks like iOS won Christmas day activations by a hefty 1.6 million units. The info comes from Flurry Analytics, who reports that iOS and Android together added 6.9 million devices on Christmas Day, a 353 percent increase from Christmas 2010. The data is also based on tweets from Google's Andy Rubin. The increased iOS activations are probably due to the iPad and iPod touch. Of course, all these numbers are educated guesswork, and the numbers don't include Amazon's Kindle Fire. The study also noted app downloads for both iOS and Android doubled during Christmas Day, as all those new smartphones loaded up on new software. Expect to see some hard numbers from Apple when it reports on its first fiscal quarter next month. [via Fortune Tech]

  • Netflix pushes max number of registered Watch Instantly devices to 50

We're not sure when this happened, but those keeping a close eye on the number of device activations tied to their Netflix Watch Instantly account will notice the max number of devices has recently gone up to 50. While that will be pleasing to hear for those that switch between computers / consoles and set-top boxes frequently, a quick look at our account listed 16 activations, half of which appeared to actually be just one PC and browser. Either way, with the streaming service ubiquitous on so many devices being able to activate and forget it without having to bump something else from the list will be helpful going forward -- as long as you don't share it too widely. [Thanks, Edwin]
