While Discovery and TLC have offered some show-specific second screen content before, the latest updates to their apps put a new spin on it. Referred to as Discovery Plus and TLC Plus, the new features are currently iPad-only (coming soon to iPhone), bringing behind the scenes info, photos, quizzes and more for shows on the networks, ready to audio sync with live broadcasts or DVR viewing. Other changes in version 2.5 of the apps include new schedule info that lets you know when new episodes are airing for a show, and what's next up to premiere. We're still not sure if this approach to the second screen is enough to consistently make viewers remember to grab their mobile device while watching, but you can try it out during an episode of Dual Survival and let us know how it goes.

Having nabbed the former head of the BBC's Natural History Unit, Discovery has designs on its own epic globe trotting series promising to "capture the world, continent by continent in high definition, as its never been seen before." Naturally planned to debut first on Discovery's networks, as opposed to its partnership with BBC on Planet Earth, Wild Planet: North America will be the first of seven installments and start filming this fall. Expect HD cams to visit even more extreme locations, and all manner of wildlife to be snapped by the thousand lenses of myriad high speed cameras. We're ready. [Warning: PDF read link][Via Reuters]

A reader passed along this image from Wikipedia of the new logo from Discovery Channel HD's first revamp. Of course shiny new graphics won't make us love your channel (Deadliest Catch is all over that) but compared to the old style, we must say it's an improvement. [Thanks, Dayton Guy]

While the vast majority of reality TV refuses to make the expected leap to high-definition, the producers of the Deadliest Catch aren't letting a few camera hazards scare them off. As predicted, Discovery Channel's hit series is splashing back this April for a fourth season, and yes, it will be broadcast in HD. According to the release, this year will see quite a few "injuries dominate the crab-fishing season," and there will also be exclusive content available via the web and Discovery's mobile portal. The action starts once more on April 15th at 9:00PM ET / PT, but viewers can get brought back up to speed by catching a two-hour "Best of Season Three" recap on April 8th at 9:00PM ET / PT.

Just yesterday we noticed that Verizon had quietly slipped Discovery Channel HD onto its FiOS TV lineup in at least three major markets, and today the firm has fessed up and proven that we're not just losing our minds. "Starting" today, VZW has added Discovery HD to FiOS TV "in all markets" on channel 846, and just in case that wasn't riveting enough, it also reaffirmed its plan to deliver HD simulcasts of Discovery Communications' other popular networks -- TLC, Animal Planet and The Science Channel -- sometime in 2008. The more the merrier, we say.
