'DuckTales: Remastered' is being pulled from digital stores

DuckTales: Remastered, a remake of the beloved NES platformer released in 1989, will soon disappear from digital store shelves. Capcom announced the news in a blog post but, curiously, didn't explain why it was being pulled. If you're not familiar, DuckTales: Remastered was released for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii U in 2013, before cane-hopping to iOS, Android and Windows Phone in early 2015. Developer Wayforward replaced the original's iconic but primitive visuals with brighter, more detailed characters and backdrops. The studio also added some fully-voiced cutscenes that critics found tedious and generally unnecessary.

  • DuckTales Remastered patch fixes bugs, adds cutscene skip option

Capcom has taken the DuckTales anthem to heart and rewritten history in the form of a patch for DuckTales: Remastered, a Capcom Unity post detailed this week. The patch's keystone is the new Quick Cinema mode, an option that unlocks after players complete the game (yes, even pre-patch completion saves work for this). Once activated, the option will let players skip "most of the cutscenes" in Remastered. The rest of the patch will focus on more minor fixes. Those include a tweak to Scrooge's pogo attack to make it more reliable, as well as a few adjustments to address various glitches and freezes. This patch will also be applicable to the $19.99 physical versions scheduled for treasure hunts on the Xbox 360, Wii U and PS3 this Tuesday. Allowing players to skip cutscenes will address one of the major problems Danny had with the game, writing in our review that Remastered's "focus on dialogue has a detrimental effect on DuckTales' underlying design."

Shantae: Half-Genie Hero has been funded. With 10 days left in the game's Kickstarter effort, WayForward Technologies has pulled in $416,360, topping its $400,000 goal. Thanks to fan generosity, Shantae: Half-Genie Hero will appear on nearly everything, having been confirmed for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Vita, Vita TV, Wii U and PC. There's currently no release date or window for when we can expect to play Shantae: Half-Genie Hero. Now that the $400,000 goal has been breached, the next rung on this Kickstarter ladder would be the $500,000 stretch goal. If the game can attract $83,640 in the next ten days, WayForward has promised to add a new campaign to Shantae: Half-Genie Hero starring Risky Boots, a pirate captain who is as evil as she is adorable.

An analog version of digitally-distributed DuckTales: Remastered will be available at retail on November 12 in North America. Capcom announced this morning that physical copies of Scrooge McDuck's remastered 1989 adventure can be yours to treasure on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 or Wii U for $19.99. The digital version is $14.99. Our review of the game said "Remastered serves as a suitable alternative to the NES original, even though its attempts at forging its own identity may ruffle your tailfeathers."

DuckTales: Remastered is available on Xbox Live today, completing the platform circuit that already includes PSN, Steam and Wii U. The game is priced at 1200 Microso... sorry, sorry, still getting used to real money on Xbox Marketplace. It's $14.99. For having to wait a little longer than other platforms, Xbox Live players can unlock DuckTales: Remastered avatar items for free. That seems antithetical to how Scrooge made his millions. Oh, you have to buy the game to access them? There it is.

  • Win a golden DuckTales NES cartridge, rewrite history

Capcom distributed working, golden DuckTales NES cartridges to members of the press to promote the release of DuckTales: Remastered. They still have some leftover, however, and they'd like to give them to some aspiring singers and PhotoShop artists, Capcom Unity employee Chris Antista revealed last week. "At least one" lunchbox filled with shredded money and a DuckTales cartridge will be given away on every weekday from now until September 11, the game's digital release date for the 360. In order to win one, contestants must upload their striking renditions of the DuckTales theme song to the contest's website. If you'd rather spare yourself from that, Capcom is accepting alternative submissions in the form of artwork or edited images that incorporate DuckTales characters into existing Capcom franchises, or vice versa, at contest at capcom dot com. Antista's update also mentions future "surprises and flash giveaways" that will spring up at Capcom Unity or amongst its social media feeds. If you'd rather not toy with your emotions, the PS3-exclusive boxed version of a digital download token for DuckTales: Remastered recently launched at retail. Digital Wii U, PS3 and PC versions are also available on the eShop, PlayStation Store and Steam. We preferred the original game, however, so why not try to give your golden The Legend of Zelda cartridge some company?

Fans of physical stuff can walk into their local game store and pick up a PS3 copy of DuckTales Remastered today. You may want to act sooner rather than later, as Capcom-Unity says physical boxed quantities are "hyper-limited" – so maybe call first rather than just stopping by. The boxed copy of DuckTales Remastered, priced at $20, includes a download voucher for the game (no disc!) on PS3, cover art sleeve and an exclusive collector's pin of protagonist Scrooge McDuck. DuckTales Remastered is currently available for download on PS3, Steam and Wii U; the Xbox 360 version arrives on September 11.

  • DuckTales Remastered review: Solving mysteries, rewriting history

Capcom's DuckTales for the Nintendo Entertainment System was a masterwork of 8-bit game design, combining a beloved Disney cartoon series with exceptional platforming action. In DuckTales Remastered, developer WayForward sought to improve upon the much-loved title, which also happens to be my personal favorite game of all time. No pressure, right? Make no mistake: I do not envy WayForward's task here. As wonderful as it is, the original DuckTales is a game that can be played from start to finish in under ten minutes, making it a hard sell for modern audiences. DuckTales Remastered takes all of the content found in the NES original and amplifies the experience with extended level layouts and new gameplay objectives. WayForward's efforts do justice to the source material and should satisfy fans of both the DuckTales cartoon and NES game, but some missteps and misplaced priorities make Remastered less successful than it could have been.%Gallery-193601%

On this week's eShop menu, there's a fine-looking Wii U dish in DuckTales, which has been Remastered for modern tastes. Maybe pick that up with a 2013 vintage of Spin the Bottle, which we recommend sharing with a few lively friends. If you'd prefer something to go, you could always try a double helping of Italian with Mario & Luigi: Dream Team on 3DS. Wii U DuckTales: Remastered (Capcom, 1 player, available August 13) Spin the Bottle: Bumpie's Party (KnapNok Games, 8 players, $8.99) Romance of the Three Kingdoms IV: Wall of Fire (Tecmo Koei, 8 players, $7.99) 3DS Mario & Luigi: Dream Team (Nintendo, 1 player, available August 11) Smash Bowling 3D (Big John Games, 1 player, $4.99) SteamWorld Dig (Image & Form, 1 player, $8.99) Tangram Style (Moving Player, 1 player, $6.99)

Look, we can see why you'd think we're the ones at fault here, but "duckumentary" is totally on DuckTales Remastered and Capcom/WayForward's shoulders. All we did was share it with you, which we had to do in order to free our minds from its webbed grasp. It's like a mummy's curse, but with ducks.

Capcom sure seems to enjoy when people sing the DuckTales theme song, as its E3 section features an enclosed glass booth for that sole purpose. We took a quick video when passing by of one gentleman exercising his vocal chords to the enjoyment of viewers behind him. Listen closely for the "woo-oo" part of the song; he totally nailed it.

Capcom later announced plans for a PC port, leading up to today's announcement. Londoners not attending E3 this year have a video game-centric event of their own to attend called "EToo." EToo was announced as an alternative to E3 with both Sony and PlayJam's GameStick headlining the event as sponsors. The event's press release noted that over 30 developers will show off their latest games. Demos of Lost Planet 3 and DuckTales will be presented by Capcom and The Last of Us and Rain will be on display as well, to name a few. EToo will be held at the Loading Bar in Soho from Monday, June 10 through Thursday, June 13. The daily events will be free to the public but require registration in advance, while nightly livestream shows have a £6 entry fee. Hopeful attendees will have to act fast, as the June 10 evening show has already sold out.
