Being the gadget hounds that we are, we're still struggling to fully digest the Micro Four Thirds / interchangeable lens camera market. The performance freak in us suggests that one simply buy a smaller DSLR given the parallel annoyance of carrying around a bag full of lenses, but the mobility junkie in us <em>does</em> appreciate the downsizing -- however minor. Olympus' PEN line has been a beautiful one from the start, but one that found itself out of consideration for many due to the poor value proposition. Even the newest <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/30/olympus-reveals-pen-e-p3-pen-e-pl3-and-pen-e-pm1-interchangeab/">PEN E-P3</a> isn't a bargain; at $900 with a somewhat versatile 14-42mm lens, it's well north of most entry-level DSLRs, and on-par with many mid-rangers. So, is it really worth splurging on a slightly more compact frame, devilishly good looks and "the world's fastest autofocus system?" Read on for our take.<br />

Remember that cute little Micro Four Thirds camera that Olympus <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/30/olympus-reveals-pen-e-p3-pen-e-pl3-and-pen-e-pm1-interchangeab/">unveiled in June</a>? Well, we just got word that the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/30/olympus-pen-e-p3-pen-e-pl3-and-pen-e-pm1-hands-on/">PEN E-PM1 Mini</a> will ship next month, with an equally petite $500 price tag -- including a 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens. The company is positioning the 12.3 megapixel camera as an upgrade for point-and-shoot users, as "the easiest PEN to use," thanks to a new, simpler user interface and 23 Scene-Select modes. Still, the E-PM1 is a very capable interchangeable lens camera (ILC), and includes a 3-inch 460k-dot LCD, 1080i HD video capture, RAW shooting and a maximum sensitivity of ISO 12,800, along with Manual, Aperture Priority, and Shutter Priority shooting modes. The Mini will be available in purple, pink, brown, white, silver, and black -- our color of choice. Jump past the break for the full scoop from Olympus.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/25/olympus-pen-e-pm1-mini-gets-a-500-price-tag-september-release/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Olympus PEN E-PM1 Mini gets a $500 price tag, September release date</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/25/olympus-pen-e-pm1-mini-gets-a-500-price-tag-september-release/">Olympus PEN E-PM1 Mini gets a $500 price tag, September release date</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 25 Aug 2011 17:58:00 EST. Last month, Olympus <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/30/olympus-reveals-pen-e-p3-pen-e-pl3-and-pen-e-pm1-interchangeab/">lifted the veil</a> on a trio of 12.3-megapixel Micro Four Thirds cameras, replacing both models in its PEN line and adding the small and light <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/30/olympus-pen-e-p3-pen-e-pl3-and-pen-e-pm1-hands-on/">E-PM1.</a> We already knew to expect an August ship date for the $900 E-P3, but now the company filled us in on its tilt-enabled E-PL3, which will be available in black, white, red, and silver when it ships in September. Priced at $700, the kit will include either a 14-42mm zoom or 17mm fixed lens, and will retail for a full c-note higher than its predecessor, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/10/olympus-e-pl2-micro-four-thirds-camera-now-shipping-penpal-stil/">the E-PL2</a>. Olympus also announced the VF-3 Electronic Viewfinder (EVF), which will feature a 100-percent field-of-view, 90-degree rotation, and brightness and color temperature adjustments -- though it sounds like that last feature could potentially leave you with off-color images if you mistake the EVF's white balance for what the camera will capture. We're still waiting on availability for the runt of the litter, but we imagine the E-PM1 will make its stateside debut soon -- perhaps even with a price tag lower than its rather pricey, beefier siblings.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/27/olympus-pen-e-pl3-gets-a-price-tag-release-date/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Olympus PEN E-PL3 gets a price tag, release date</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/27/olympus-pen-e-pl3-gets-a-price-tag-release-date/">Olympus PEN E-PL3 gets a price tag, release date</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 27 Jul 2011 01:00:00 EST. Earlier today, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/30/olympus-reveals-pen-e-p3-pen-e-pl3-and-pen-e-pm1-interchangeab/">Olympus announced</a> its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/29/olympus-e-pm1s-petite-frame-outed-before-launch/">loosely veiled</a> PEN E-PM1 (in the image above), along with the PEN E-P3 and PEN E-PL3. Our Chinese bureau had a chance to go hands-on with the trio of Micro Four Thirds cams at an event in Hong Kong, and walked away with some fairly positive impressions. The $900 E-P3 feels solidly built, and did appear to offer excellent autofocus performance, though we weren't able to verify Olympus's rather lofty claims that the new flagship model features "the world's fastest autofocus." We were able to capture an image within a second of tapping the shutter button, including the time required to refocus on a subject. The 3-inch OLED display was sufficiently bright for outdoor use, with noticeable improvements over its predecessor, and the touchscreen was a pleasure to use, offering three straightforward shooting functions -- focus, focus and shoot, and enlarge. We'll have additional details to share after spending more time with all three models, but our hands-on photos in the gallery below should help whet your appetite in the meantime.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/olympus-pen-e-p3-pen-e-pl3-and-pen-e-pm1-hands-on/">Olympus PEN E-P3, PEN E-PL3, and PEN E-PM1 Hands-On</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/olympus-pen-e-p3-pen-e-pl3-and-pen-e-pm1-hands-on/#4263101"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/dsc7663-1309413596_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/olympus-pen-e-p3-pen-e-pl3-and-pen-e-pm1-hands-on/#4263102"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/dsc7664-1309413596_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/olympus-pen-e-p3-pen-e-pl3-and-pen-e-pm1-hands-on/#4263103"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/dsc7665-1309413596_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/olympus-pen-e-p3-pen-e-pl3-and-pen-e-pm1-hands-on/#4263104"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/dsc7666-1309413596_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/olympus-pen-e-p3-pen-e-pl3-and-pen-e-pm1-hands-on/#4263105"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/dsc7667-1309413596_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/30/olympus-pen-e-p3-pen-e-pl3-and-pen-e-pm1-hands-on/">Olympus PEN E-P3, PEN E-PL3, and PEN E-PM1 hands-on</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 30 Jun 2011 10:20:00 EST. Looking to add even more retro flavor to your <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/e-p1">Olumpus E-P1</a>? Then you might want to consider taking after Flickr user Lok Cheung, who was inspired by the Rolleiflex TLR to create this Rollei EVF (of sorts) for the Micro Four Thirds camera. While the setup isn't actually anything more than a viewfinder for viewing the screen, Lok nonetheless says the results are "really good," with the viewfinder resting almost right behind the lens, and the manual focus "almost as fast as you can get on a true manual camera." Not the most practical camera mod, perhaps, but certainly one of the more interesting ones.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/21/olympus-e-p1-outfitted-with-rollei-evf/">Olympus E-P1 outfitted with Rollei EVF</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 21 Apr 2010 15:54:00 EST. Got yourself a new <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/PEN/">PEN</a>? If you're nodding your head furiously up and down, you owe it to yourself to take ten minutes late next week and install a minty fresh update. Olympus has today let loose a new firmware build that improves auto focus performance for still images and high-definition video recording for the PEN <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/01/olympus-e-p1-hands-on-test-shots-and-mini-review/">E-P1</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/12/09/olympus-pen-e-p2-gets-reviewed-and-starts-shipping-out/">E-P2</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/01/olympus-e-pl1-review/">E-PL1</a> cameras. Better still, it enables the menu and recorded image to be displayed on the E-P2 and E-PL1 LCD while the VF-2 electronic viewfinder is in use. Unfortunately, the bits and bytes you're after won't be available to download until next Thursday (the 22nd), but till then, you can keep on using your Micro Four Thirds shooter while <i>imagining</i> how much better your images will be in just a few short days.<br />

You know how to ruin a luxurious shooter already steeped in fine retro-styling? Slather on the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/swarovski">Swarovski crystal</a>, that's how. This &pound;1,999 CrystalRoc bastardization of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/e-p1">Olympus' E-P1</a> Micro Four Thirds <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/17/olympus-e-p1-review-roundup/">wundercam</a> more than doubles the price of the de-iced original. We've already seen plenty of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/e-p1">Olympus E-P1</a>, but when we dropped by Olympus' booth today at IFA we just couldn't resist slapping on the biggest lens they had, courtesy of the micro four thirds to standard four thirds adapter, and shooting a bit of dramatic show floor footage. The verdict? It's totally impractical, especially because there's no autofocus during video with certain lenses, meaning we're stuck working the manual focus ring, D90-style. Still, we didn't expect anything different, and our short film entitled "People Wandering Around, Totally Out of Focus" really made the effort worth while. Oh, and for our money? The white model is about twice as sexy as the gray. Videos are after the break. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/olympus-e-p1-meets-50-200mm-swd-lens-monstrosity/">Olympus E-P1 meets 50-200mm SWD lens monstrosity</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/olympus-e-p1-meets-50-200mm-swd-lens-monstrosity/#2260405"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/09/e-p1-lens-14_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/olympus-e-p1-meets-50-200mm-swd-lens-monstrosity/#2260396"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/09/e-p1-lens-15_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/olympus-e-p1-meets-50-200mm-swd-lens-monstrosity/#2260400"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/09/e-p1-lens-16_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/olympus-e-p1-meets-50-200mm-swd-lens-monstrosity/#2260399"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/09/e-p1-lens-17_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/olympus-e-p1-meets-50-200mm-swd-lens-monstrosity/#2260397"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/09/e-p1-lens-18_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/05/olympus-e-p1-meets-50-200mm-swd-lens-monstrosity-hilarity-ensue/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Olympus E-P1 meets 50-200mm SWD lens monstrosity, hilarity ensues</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/digitalcameras/" rel="tag">Digital Cameras</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/05/olympus-e-p1-meets-50-200mm-swd-lens-monstrosity-hilarity-ensue/">Olympus E-P1 meets 50-200mm SWD lens monstrosity, hilarity ensues</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sat, 05 Sep 2009 11:02:00 EST. Just look at that little bugger. Ain't it just <em>so cute</em>? All jesting aside, the adorably retro piece of kit you're inevitably peering at above rings up at $799 to $899, meaning that it's priced way too high to be slotted in most consumers' impulse buy category. Olympus' <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/EP1/">E-P1</a> was launched with high hopes, and it pretty much held the weight of the Micro Four Thirds world on its shoulders. During <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/01/olympus-e-p1-hands-on-test-shots-and-mini-review/">our time with the unit</a>, we found image quality to be satisfactory overall and the design to be simply stunning, but we certainly didn't come away feeling it was flawless. For those of you who overlooked the entry-level DSLR in order to try something different, how has that decision treated you? Are you full of remorse? Could you not be happier? Spill all in comments below.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/digitalcameras/" rel="tag">Digital Cameras</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/04/how-would-you-change-olympus-e-p1/">How would you change Olympus' E-P1?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 04 Sep 2009 23:05:00 EST. Olympus did its darnedest to drum up hype for the recently unveiled <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/e-p1/">E-P1 Micro Four Thirds shooter</a>, and while we <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/01/olympus-e-p1-hands-on-test-shots-and-mini-review/">already shared</a> our two pennies on the thing, we figured it prudent to round up the best of the best from elsewhere on the web to give you a fuller picture. The long and short of it is this: the E-P1 is universally praised in terms of image quality, with the only real knock in that department going to higher-than-likable noise levels in low-light scenarios. Still, a camera is about more than just the output, and reviewers were quick to lament the dearth of an integrated viewfinder and flash. Furthermore, critics panned the camera for being slow to focus, oftentimes requiring well over half a second to finally settle and snap a shot. That said, we couldn't find anyone who wasn't won over by the image quality, but we'd make darn sure those other nuisances won't frustrate you to no end before falling for the cute factor.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.photographyblog.com/reviews/olympus_ep1_review/">Read</a> - PhotographyBLOG<br /><a href="http://www.digicamreview.com/2009/07/olympus-pen-e-p1-dslr-review-online.html">Read</a> - DigiCamReview<br /><a href="http://www.photocrati.com/olympus-e-p1-review-field-test-report/">Read</a> - photocrati<br /><a href="http://www.photographypress.co.uk/reviews/review.phtml/2296/3320/olympus-pen-e-p1-review.phtml">Read</a> - PhotographyPress<br /><a href="http://www.outbackphoto.com/CONTENT_2007_01/section_gear_cameras_2009/20090702_Olympus_E-P1/index.html">Read</a> - OutbackPhoto<br /><a href="http://reviews.cnet.com/digital-cameras/olympus-e-p1-silver/4505-6501_7-33688027.html?tag=mncol;lst">Read</a> - CNET<br /><a href="http://www.steves-digicams.com/2009_reviews/olympus_ep1.html">Read</a> - Steves Digicams<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/digitalcameras/" rel="tag">Digital Cameras</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/17/olympus-e-p1-review-roundup/">Olympus E-P1 review roundup</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 17 Jul 2009 09:03:00 EST. If you've been lusting over the latest Micro Four Thirds entrant from Olympus just like we have since we <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/07/olympus-e-p1-micro-four-thirds-shooter-leaked/">first saw the E-P1</a>, you'll be happy to know that it has finally entered that special time in its life when it's not available through mainstream retailers just yet, but it <em>is</em> available -- if you're willing to pay a bit more than Amazon's (still unshipped) <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/21/olympus-e-p1-now-available-for-pre-order/">pre-order</a> asking price of $749. Kit prices of the body with the 14 - 42mm kit lens <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/01/olympus-e-p1-hands-on-test-shots-and-mini-review/">we tested</a> are right now ranging between $799 (MSRP) and $899 (a Benjamin premium) at various Amazon affiliates, and while anyone willing to refrain from clicking the "Buy" button for a week or three will surely save quite a bit, waiting is <em>such </em>a bother.<br /><br />[Thanks, <a href="http://www.video-alerts.com/">Ron M.</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/digitalcameras/" rel="tag">Digital Cameras</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/14/olympus-e-p1-available-to-those-willing-to-pay-a-little-premium/">Olympus E-P1 available to those willing to pay a little premium</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 14 Jul 2009 07:13:00 EST. It goes without saying that we've been pretty excited about the Olympus <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/EP1/">E-P1</a> (or "digital Pen") since we first laid eyes on the prototype the company was showing off. The Micro Four Thirds camera just seems to breed gadget lust amongst the staff, combining the best of modern tech with a throwback retro style that is somewhat irresistible. Of course, no one wants to drop $800 on a digicam unless it's actually capable of taking a decent shot -- so we thought we'd put the E-P1 through some basic paces to see if this guy is worth unloading nearly a grand on. Read on for some of our first impressions and observations.<br />

You might've noticed this already, but for those out there who share our lust for Olympus' <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/EP1/">E-P1</a> "digital Pen," but haven't done too much digging, consider this a public service announcement. The retro-chich micro four thirds camera is now available for pre-order from a handful of online retailers, with several different packages to choose from based with various body color (silver or white) and lens color (silver or black) combinations. Looks like it'll still cost you about $750 if you want body only, but really, at this point we don't know why you wouldn't pay an additional Ulysses S. Grant and grab a lens with it. Ready to smash that E-P1 piggy bank a bit early? You've got plenty of retailers willing to help you out there, but don't feel too pressured, there's still a <em>little</em> bit of time to decide before the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/16/olympus-e-p1-digital-pen-gets-official-so-does-our-lust/">July launch</a>.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.adorama.com/SearchSite/Default.aspx?searchinfo=Olympus%20E-P1">Read</a> - Adorama<br /><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html/ref=pe_17070_12351480_as_img_2/?docId=1000389481&amp;plgroup=1">Read</a> - Amazon<br /><a href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?ci=0&amp;shs=Olympus+E-P1&amp;sb=ps&amp;pn=1&amp;sq=desc&amp;InitialSearch=yes&amp;O=jsp%2Fproductlist.jsp&amp;A=search&amp;Q=*&amp;bhs=t&amp;Go.x=0&amp;Go.y=0&amp;Go=submit">Read</a> - B&amp;H<br /><a href="http://www.jr.com/product/productListing.jsp?Ntt=Olympus+E-P1">Read</a> - J&amp;R<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/digitalcameras/" rel="tag">Digital Cameras</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/21/olympus-e-p1-now-available-for-pre-order/">Olympus E-P1 now available for pre-order</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sun, 21 Jun 2009 22:44:00 EST. It's been one hell of a month, hasn't it? New Palm phones, new iPhones, a big Kindle, that Natal thing... LL Cool J. Yes, a lot has happened in the past few weeks, and it's tough to contain all of that activity inside one teensy podcast -- but we've tried. Join Josh, Paul, and Nilay for another adventurous adventure through time, space, and love as they explore the deeper meanings of the cosmos, the universe, and consumer facing gadgetry. If you don't love the way you feel after listening to this thing, you may already be a zombie.<br />

Our brethren on the other side of the world got some quality time with the new Olympus E-P1 Micro Four Thirds shooter -- and we do mean quality. There's much to love about the new <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/16/olympus-e-p1-digital-pen-gets-official-so-does-our-lust/">Olympus E-P1</a>, but the hip new thing for the DSLR market is video, and Panasonic has already demonstrated with the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/gh1">Lumix DMC-GH1</a> that Micro Four Thirds cameras are in some ways even better suited to the demands of high quality point-and-shoot video. The folks at <span style="font-style: italic;">Digital Photography Review</span> have some samples up now of the E-P1's video performance, and while we'd like to see how the camera fares indoors as well, the outdoor samples they've posted are very promising. The colors seem just a touch washed out, but there's great motion and clarity, and solid manual controls. It is interesting to note that while the camera does include some built-in effects, most of them dramatically reduce the frame rate -- making them more or less useless. <strike>Most unfortunate, however, is the fact that there's no auto focus in video mode</strike>, which is where the DMC-GH1 still reigns supreme in DSLR land. Hit up the read link for the videos, or if that's not your style check out the bemusing Blendtec advert for the E-P1 after the break -- it's a real viral meets meta mashup, or something like that.<br /><br />[Thanks <a href="http://www.richardlai.co.uk/">Richard L.</a>]<br /><br /><strong>Update:</strong> We've heard conflicting word on auto focus. According to <a href="http://reviews.photographyreview.com/blog/olympus-e-p1-digital-camera/"><em>Photography Review</em>'s preview</a>, the camera doesn't have auto focus in video mode, but according to the Olympus press release, as Super Marxio pointed out in comments, there is auto focus during recording. Perhaps <em>Photography Review</em> was looking at a non-final version of the camera. We do know that the camera does auto focus using contrast detection, like a regular compact camera, and while that's the same method used by the GH1, <a href="http://www.dpreview.com/previews/olympusep1/page9.asp"><em>DP Review</em> claims</a> it's slightly inferior -- though they did state they were working with a 0.9 firmware.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/16/olympus-e-p1-video-samples-posted-camera-turns-up-in-ad-within/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Olympus E-P1 video samples posted, camera turns up in ad-within-an-ad Blendtec spot</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/digitalcameras/" rel="tag">Digital Cameras</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hdtv/" rel="tag">HDTV</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/16/olympus-e-p1-video-samples-posted-camera-turns-up-in-ad-within/">Olympus E-P1 video samples posted, camera turns up in ad-within-an-ad Blendtec spot</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 16 Jun 2009 13:51:00 EST. It's official, Olympus' first MIcro Four Thirds camera is up and dancing upon the global stage. Dubbed, E-P1 "digital Pen" (reflecting the camera's Olympus Pen-series heritage) this MFT shooter aligns with the looks and specs that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/15/leaked-olympus-ep-1-micro-four-thirds-compact-has-us-hot-bother/">came our way yesterday</a> in leaked format. In other words, we're looking at an image stabilized (sensor-shift) 12.3 megapixel Live MOS sensor with TruePic V image processing, ISO 100-6400 sensitivity, a 3-inch LCD, 20 shooting modes (5 exposure, i-Auto, and 14 automatic scenes), an SDHC slot, and HDMI TV-out for playback of 720p (1280x720 pixel) recorded video at 30fps. The 14-42 lens kit retracts into the barrel when not in use and Olympus' Supersonic Wave Filter helps keep dust under control when swapping-out the lens for Micro Four Thirds, Four Thirds, or OM lenses. A few advanced previews of the E-P1 are already available -- peep those in the read links below if you can't wait for the July launch or the full-blown reviews due in a few weeks. <br /><br /><strong>Update</strong>: Priced at $749 (body only), $799 (with 14-42mm lens), and $899 (with 17mm pancake lens and viewfinder). Honestly, those prices are better than we had hoped for especially in a camera measuring just 121 x 70 x 36-mm (4.7 x 2.7 x 1.4-inches) playing host to a DSLR-sized sensor.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/olympus-e-p1-digital-pen-gets-official-so-does-our-lust/">Olympus E-P1 'digital pen' gets official, so does our lust</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/olympus-e-p1-digital-pen-gets-official-so-does-our-lust/#2086032"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/olympus0e-p1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/olympus-e-p1-digital-pen-gets-official-so-does-our-lust/#2086027"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/olympus10e-p1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/olympus-e-p1-digital-pen-gets-official-so-does-our-lust/#2086033"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/olympus11e-p1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/olympus-e-p1-digital-pen-gets-official-so-does-our-lust/#2086028"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/olympus12e-p1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/olympus-e-p1-digital-pen-gets-official-so-does-our-lust/#2086025"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/olympus13e-p1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><a href="http://www.letsgodigital.org/en/22386/olympus-e-p1-review/">Read</a> -- LetsGoDigital<br /><a href="http://www.dpreview.com/previews/olympusep1/">Read</a> -- DPReview<br /><a href="http://www.photographyblog.com/articles/olympus_e-p1_photos/">Read</a> -- Photography Blog<br /><a href="http://www.olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/product.asp?product=1461&amp;cid=em_e-p1opr_09_06&amp;li=im#/sample-video">Read</a> -- Official E-P1 product page<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/digitalcameras/" rel="tag">Digital Cameras</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/16/olympus-e-p1-digital-pen-gets-official-so-does-our-lust/">Olympus E-P1 'digital Pen' gets official, so does our lust</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 16 Jun 2009 01:27:00 EST. It's not scheduled to be announced until <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/07/olympus-e-p1-micro-four-thirds-shooter-leaked/">tomorrow</a>, but it looks like Olympus' <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/08/05/olympus-and-panasonic-launch-micro-four-thirds-dslrs-enter-a-ne/">Micro Four Thirds</a> tribute to the classic rangefinder has leaked out onto these here Internets looking every bit as handsome as the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/07/olympus-e-p1-micro-four-thirds-shooter-leaked/">top-side leak seen earlier</a>. Remember, we're talking about a DSLR-sized sensor stuffed inside that retro compact body. Judging by the pics of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/07/olympus-e-p1-micro-four-thirds-shooter-leaked/">E-P1</a>, we're looking at a stock, 17mm lens with an interchangeable 14-42mm (3x) zoom lens available at launch. One more day and we'll have prices, ship dates, and full spec-sheet to share -- can you wait? 3x lens and few more color variations in the gallery below.<br /><br /><strong>Update</strong>: <a href="http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;langpair=zh-CN%7Cen&amp;u=http://forum.xitek.com/showthread.php%3Fthreadid%3D635107">Possible specs</a> accompanying authentic looking images have now entered the rumor mill. Said specs have the camera measuring in at 120 x 70 x 35mm (about the size of a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/dp2">Sigma DP2</a> or slightly larger than mainstream point-and-shoots) snapping 13 megapixel RAW images and 1280 x 720 pixel video to SD card, ISO 6400 sensitivity, 11-point AF, electronic anti-shake, and 3-inch LCD if we're reading the machine translated text correctly. It's expected to ship in July with prices starting at about $900 -- though it's unclear what you get at that price point.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/olympus-e-p1-micro-four-thirds-leak-has-us-hot-bothered/">Olympus E-P1 Micro Four Thirds leak has us hot, bothered</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/olympus-e-p1-micro-four-thirds-leak-has-us-hot-bothered/#2083995"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/13185_1244726640_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/olympus-e-p1-micro-four-thirds-leak-has-us-hot-bothered/#2083994"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/13185_1245068073_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/olympus-e-p1-micro-four-thirds-leak-has-us-hot-bothered/#2083993"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/13185_1244598381_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/olympus-e-p1-micro-four-thirds-leak-has-us-hot-bothered/#2083321"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/1515105550x-big_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/olympus-e-p1-micro-four-thirds-leak-has-us-hot-bothered/#2083315"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/1515111t349_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Via <a href="http://43rumors.com/ft5-fullsize-of-the-whitebeige-e-p1/">43rumors</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/digitalcameras/" rel="tag">Digital Cameras</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/15/leaked-olympus-ep-1-micro-four-thirds-compact-has-us-hot-bother/">Leaked Olympus E-P1 Micro Four Thirds compact has us hot, bothered (updated)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 15 Jun 2009 10:58:00 EST. No, you're not crazy. Er, you might be, but not solely because you <em>just know</em> that Olympus has already outed a camera with an <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/07/13/olympus-e-p1-dslr-leaked-slated-for-fall-release/">E-P1 model name</a>. Turns out, the camera outfit decided the shelve that codename and settle on the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/08/28/olympus-launches-the-e-3-dslr/">E-3</a>, but evidently it's time to bust said moniker back out. If the above image is to be believed, the new E-P1 is a Micro Four Thirds shooter, complete with a 17mm f/2.8 lens. Only time will tell if this thing's really on the way out, but considering just how <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/15/olympus-micro-four-thirds-throwback-set-to-launch-early-july/">infatuated</a> Olympus <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/28/two-olympus-micro-four-thirds-cameras-rumored-for-soonish-releas/">seems</a> to be with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/09/22/olympus-drops-jaws-with-retro-micro-four-thirds-concept/">MFT</a>, we wouldn't be shocked to see it get the official seal of authenticity here soon.<br /><br /><strong>Update</strong>: Seems Olympus is having some kind of Micro Four Thirds announcement <a href="http://www.olympus.com.hk/olympus/tc/events/current_event/detail.html?int_id=1053&amp;type=events_new">on June 16th</a>. Wonder what that could be for? Fresh off of discovering that Timex is indeed releasing a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/07/13/timexs-ipod-controlling-i-control-watch-hits-the-fcc/">Made for iPod watch</a>, it looks like that Olympus E-1 <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/09/25/olympus-e-1-followup-on-display-at-photokina/">successor</a> will soon become a reality -- we're talking October / November soon. While the 27-page document detailing the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/06/06/olympus-teases-with-e-1-dslr-followup/">E-P1</a> has since been removed at the request of Olympus, a good amount of details were extracted beforehand. Reportedly, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/DSLR/">DSLR</a> will feature a 10-megapixel sensor, dust reduction, splash-proof body, swiveling LCD, image sensor stabilization, eleven-point autofocus, and a weather-sealed extra battery compartment for good measure. So if you're as giddy as we are about finally getting a followup to the aging E-1, give the links below a bit of your time and start pinching those pennies.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://news.com.com/8301-10784_3-9743940-7.html?part=rss&amp;subj=news&amp;tag=2547-1_3-0-20">CNET</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/digitalcameras/" rel="tag">Digital Cameras</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/07/13/olympus-e-p1-dslr-leaked-slated-for-fall-release/">Olympus E-P1 DSLR leaked, slated for fall release?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 13 Jul 2007 18:13:00 EST.
