Good news for fans of grind-tastic dungeon crawler / strategy RPG hybrids: Rainbow Skies is headed to the PlayStation 3 and Vita in 2014. A sequel of sorts to last year's Rainbow Moon, Rainbow Skies promises "countless hours" of content and features new combination attacks and a monster taming system. The game is coming exclusively to PSN and will feature cross-save support, allowing players to begin a game on PS3 and continue it on Vita, or vice versa. Whether the game will be cross-buy is still being determined, publisher Eastasiasoft tells us. Eastasiasoft also tells us that Rainbow Moon will arrive on Vita later this year. More details will arrive "in the coming weeks." We found Rainbow Moon to be a passable RPG, though its dependence on unrewarding grinding was disappointing.%Gallery-195389%

  • Rainbow Moon review: A real grind

Playing the PSN exclusive Rainbow Moon evokes an unusual sort of frustration: it's a victim of wasted potential. This kind of game does a lot of things right, features some neat ideas and fun play elements, but is crippled by one or two major problems – problems so significant that they drag the rest of the product down. All it would take are a couple of fixes to make a great game instead of a merely passable one but, alas, you're stuck with a product that, for everything it does right, is damaged by very obvious flaws. In Rainbow Moon's case, the novel idea is to blend two distinct types of role-playing game into a unique experience. Exploration is done in the overhead, isometric perspective of classic dungeon-crawlers, and both the overworld and the puzzle-filled labyrinths you'll wind up spelunking are littered with copious amounts of loot and roaming beasties out for your blood. Touch one of the monsters on the map, however, and you'll be spirited off to a new playfield: a miniature version of the grid-based arenas so common in strategy-RPGs like Fire Emblem and Final Fantasy Tactics.%Gallery-158468%

Developer Sidequest Studios and publisher Eastasiasoft are following the Soldner-X shooter series with the PS3 downloadable role-playing game, Rainbow Moon. It's about a man cursed and transported to the title location, which is also host to a dimensional gate out of which monsters are continually escaping.Rainbow Moon will pass through a dimensional gate of its own on July 4, landing on the PlayStation Store in Europe, Eastasiasoft announced today. North America and Southeast Asia will follow, sometime in July, for $14.99.%Gallery-158468%

  • Rainbow Moon fleshed out with new trailer, screens, system details

Besides being chock full of explosions, meteors and a charmingly tiny boat, this latest trailer for Rainbow Moon also demonstrates the isometric PSN-exclusive RPG's various systems, which as we all know are the most important parts of any RPG. Well, at least as important as the inclusion of a tiny boat, at any rate. The game's battle system straddles the line between "new" and "classic" by implementing old-school ideas (like a grid-based combat map) and counter balancing them with more modern concepts (like optional random encounters), according to a PlayStation Blog post by SideQuest Studios' CEO Marcus Pukropski. Players will have access to "over 120" different skills for use in battle against "100 different enemies from 17 classes."Despite the trailer's high-octane vibe, combat is said to be a "no stress, no chaos" affair in which players have time to properly strategize their next move. Rainbow Moon should be available on the PlayStation Network in "just a few weeks."%Gallery-154685%

  • Soldner-X dev announces PSN strategy RPG 'Rainbow Moon'

Known for developing the tongue-twistingly titled shooter Söldner-X: Himmelsstürmer, SideQuest Studios is hard at work on its next IP for release on PlayStation Network. Rainbow Moon is an isometric view strategy RPG in a fantasy setting, currently scheduled to hit in Q4 2011 according to publisher eastasiasoft. Early imagery shows a vibrant hand-drawn visual style, and the game's developer is shooting (no pun intended) for a silky smooth 60 frames per second. Details released so far mention six playable characters and a roughly 25 hour adventure. Our favorite feature so far: we can actually pronounce its name.

Proving that the original release was more "prototype" than "final," a downloadable expansion is in the works for eastasiasoft's PSN shmup, Söldner X 2: Final Prototype.

It's no secret that shmup fans love inflicting pain on themselves. That's why they'll undoubtedly love the news that the upcoming PSN-exclusive shooter Soldner-X 2 will feature a new "Challenge" mode -- as if the game wasn't going to be challenging enough! In this new mode, players will have to complete a variety of tasks in order to earn Trophies, bonus items and additional credits. Considering the near-impossible task of earning a 100 percent in the first game, this new mode is sure to further frustrate and delight hardcore gamers. Soldner-X 2 will be available on the PlayStation Network some time this Spring. %Gallery-85829%

Eastasiasoft, the publishing branch of import retailer Play-Asia, released its first PC game in late 2007, a horizontal shooter called Söldner-X: Himmelsstürmer. It came out on PSN a year later. The company has just announced its second game, this time exclusively for the PS3's PlayStation Network: Söldner-X 2: Final Prototype. Unfortunately, the lack of a PC version means no huge limited edition box!The Sidequest Studios-developed shooter is expected out this winter, but then the PSN version of the first game missed its original release date by a year. If you're really in the mood to punish yourself with a shmup, may we suggest the downloadable PS1 classic R-Types in the meantime?%Gallery-72721%

We bet some of you were hoping tomorrow's PSN releases will bring with it the side-scroller Soldner-X: Himmelsstürmer. Sorry to burst your collective bubble, because according to EastAsiaSoft's forums, it's been delayed ... again. The new release date will be "late November." You guys might remember at one point, it was suppose to come out during the winter of ... 2007 -- really, what's another month's wait?[Via Siliconera]

With a name like Soldner-X: Himmelsstürmer, it's got to be German. If there was any further doubt, the droning synth and drum machine soundtrack settles it. Yep, this PSN shooter, complete with Ye Olde School side-scrolling and – as the trailer boldly promises – the ability to "upgrade your weapons" (how novel) is from the land of Nietzsche. Fortunately, this re-imagination of the 2007 PC game has been updated with new graphics, runs at 1080p, and actually looks pretty fun. Should development continue unabated, the game will have you himmelsstürmering all the way to the PlayStation Store in Oktober.

  • Side-scrolling shooter Soldner-X headed to PSN this October

Download to PSP We haven't heard from Soldner-X: Himmelsstürmer since last year, but now developer SideQuest Studios is letting us know the horizontally-scrolling shooter is on its way to the PLAYSTATION Network this October. Soldner-X puts you in the shoes of "an anti-hero mercenary and bounty hunter" who must save the Earth from an infection that spreads to both organic lifeforms and technology in "a mighty prototype star fighter." Other than the anti-hero part, it sounds like a cliché plot that gives a lone ship an excuse to take on hordes and hordes of alien enemies.Soldner-X is an updated version of a 2007 PC title, with improvements such as enhanced graphics, 1080p resolution, new music tracks, easier default difficulty, Dual Shock 3 support, optional SIXAXIS support, and of course, everyone's favorite, trophy support!
