The sleek black box sits between console and display, enabling gamers to record their speed runs and kill records for the world to see. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/01/celebration-pack-xbox-360-due-may-25/">Xbox 360</a> users can daisy-chain the gear into their HDMI set-up, while <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/09/ps3-cod-mw3-299-bundle/">PS3</a> users will have to use the bundled AV cable to circumvent Sony's stronger copy protection. The footage will then be compressed with the company's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/04/know-your-rights-h-264-patent-licensing-and-you/">H.264</a> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/14/engadgets-gear-of-ces-2012/">know-how</a> and pushed to your PC or Mac for uploading. It's been a hectic week, what with Amazon trotting out a little <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/28/amazon-fire-tablet-unveiled-7-inch-display-199-price-tag/">something</a> you may have been expecting (along with a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/28/amazon-launches-kindle-touch/">few</a> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/28/amazon-reveals-79-kindle/">things</a> you weren't). We won't lie: <em>some</em> of us now know what we're getting our friends and family for the holidays, but gadgets we may or may not be purchasing doesn't cut the mustard for IRL, now does it? Until we pull the trigger, we'll keep on talking up and dressing down the stuff we're already using. This week, Jose from Engadget Spanish takes his newly minted NEX-C3 on vacation, Dana outgrows her Forerunner 110 and Darren shows you just how your hands-on video sausages get made.</div>

	Elgato's been experimenting with live TV on the iPad for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/24/elgatos-eyetv-hd-records-shows-to-your-mac-slings-live-to-your/">over a year now</a>, but until now, that meant streaming programs that were <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/19/elgato-hdhomerun-ipad-app-brings-some-cable-channels-to-the-ta/">already broadcast online</a> anyway -- a mighty large limitation, wouldn't you say? This week, though, the company <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/30/elgato-eyetv-mobile-dongle-brings-live-tv-to-the-ipad-2/">announced</a> EyeTV Mobile, a TV tuner that plugs into the iPad 2's 30-pin connector, allowing it to pull in broadcast television. We just happened to stumble on Elgato's booth here at IFA and treated ourselves to a short TV break. The tuner, which fits easily in the palm of your hand when the antenna is collapsed, only allows you to draw in signals using the DVB-T standard, so make no mistake this is a product just for our European readers. (Although Elgato says it hopes to release something similar in Japan.) Even more than the hardware or the programming selection (<em>f</em>&uacute;<em>tbol</em>, anyone?), we remain impressed by the free EyeTV iOS app, whose interface is pretty much the same as the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/19/elgato-hdhomerun-ipad-app-brings-some-cable-channels-to-the-ta/">HDHomeRun for iPad</a> app, with the ability to swipe the screen to change channels and, in this case, save your location. It'll be available across the pond for &euro;99.95 / &pound;99.95 at the end of this month. Until then (or if you're just stuck in the states), check out our hands-on photos below and a video demo after the break.<br />

Sure, Elgato already has an app that lets you <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/19/elgato-hdhomerun-ipad-app-brings-some-cable-channels-to-the-ta/">stream TV to your iPad</a> -- but that's only if they're being broadcast online. To pull in live TV over the air you'd need a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/tvtuner">TV-tuner</a>, something that has, until now, been unavailable for Apple's popular slate. By the end of September that lack of broadcast television will become just a distant memory with the release of EyeTV Mobile, a &pound;100 (about $163) dongle that connects to the iPad's proprietary port. The tuner will be able to pull in MPEG 2 streams over <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/DVB-T">DVB-T</a>, but won't work with DVB-T2 broadcasts like Freeview HD. Check out the source for more details.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/30/elgato-eyetv-mobile-dongle-brings-live-tv-to-the-ipad-2/">Elgato EyeTV Mobile dongle brings live TV to the iPad 2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 30 Aug 2011 14:35:00 EST. Whether or not your cable TV provider has decided to <a href="http://hd.engadget.com/tag/twcabletv">offer live TV streaming</a> to your <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/09/cablevisions-optimum-app-hits-2-0-brings-cable-tv-streaming-to/">mobile devices</a>, you can do it yourself with the new <a href="http://hd.engadget.com/tag/hdhomerun">HDHomeRun</a> iPad app from <a href="http://hd.engadget.com/tag/elgato">Elgato</a>. Paired with one of SiliconDust's new <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/18/hdhomerun-prime-cablecard-tuner-hands-on/">HDHomeRun Prime CableCARD tuners</a>, the $17.99 app can tune into cable channels that are sent without encyption or are marked copy freely (varies from provider to provider) and even allows users to record them right on the app. Restrictions include that it only works on the iPad 2, with standard definition MPEG-2 channels and (for now) only the most recent HDHomeRun hardware is supported. Check out the video demo for more information on exactly how it works or click the source link to get to iTunes and buy -- in a market suddenly flooded by CableCARD tuners maybe this extra functionality is just what's needed to tip the balance between one device or another.<br />

It's Friday, and that can only mean one thing: two days of parties, sleeping in, and seeing your campus transform from a vehicle of intense education to a spring break-like haven of drunken delight. We've rounded up a few toys to help you relax before you head back to class -- a memory card reader that doubles as a pocket mirror, an Arduino-powered car that can stream video from the dorm hall, and an electric-powered sports car that can drive you and a friend far from campus for a pricey weekend getaway -- so kick off the shoes and prepare to embrace these 48 hours of freedom. And when it's time to get back to the books, we have the gear for that too -- and we're giving it away! Simply leave a comment below to be entered to win, and check out <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/02/engadgets-back-to-school-2011-sweepstakes-were-giving-away-3/">our giveaway page</a> for more details.<br />

Elgato has been pushing <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/eyetv">EyeTV for Mac</a> software alongside its own various TV tuner devices for a while now, but if you prefer Silicondust's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/07/24/elgatos-eyetv-software-gets-hdhomerun-support/">HDHomeRun</a> it's added a new package to the list of offerings. For $179.95 the dual-tuner HDHomeRun comes with EyeTV3 software for Mac, drivers for a PC and the requisite cables for you to watch some TV on your computer. It's not a major leap for the hardware or software involved, but if you're a fan of both they're now available in one convenient package at the Apple Store, Amazon and other retailers.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/16/elgato-offers-hdhomerun-tv-tuner-bundled-with-its-eyetv-software/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Elgato offers HDHomeRun TV tuner bundled with its EyeTV software for $180</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/16/elgato-offers-hdhomerun-tv-tuner-bundled-with-its-eyetv-software/">Elgato offers HDHomeRun TV tuner bundled with its EyeTV software for $180</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 16 May 2011 14:38:00 EST. If you've been longing to use your <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/24/elgatos-eyetv-hd-records-shows-to-your-mac-slings-live-to-your/">EyeTV HD</a> to sling content from your <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/AirPlay/">AirPlay</a>-enabled iOS device to your designated <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/AppleTV2/">Apple TV 2</a> setup, listen up. Elgato has pushed an updated version of the EyeTV iOS app (version 1.2.3) that enables Apple's wireless streaming technology to play nicely with your ATV2 or third-party AirPlay device. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/05/eyetv-iphone-app-features-3g-streaming-jessica-fletcher-fans-go/">Remember</a>, the app costs $4.99, but wouldn't you rather watch <em>Seinfeld</em> reruns on the living room 74-incher? Yeah, us too.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/06/elgato-updates-eyetv-ios-app-does-the-airplay-dance/">Elgato updates EyeTV iOS app, does the AirPlay dance</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 06 Apr 2011 09:54:00 EST. Folks on this side of the pond will unfortunately miss out on this one, but our friends in the UK will soon be able to get their hands on <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/elgato">Elgato's</a> new EyeTV Netstream Sat box and make everyone else a bit envious. It will not only let you stream Freesat satellite TV to any computer on your home network, but straight to your iPad as well with Elgato's EyeTV app (though not your iPhone or iPod touch, it seems). That sort of streaming has been possible before but, as <em>Pocket-lint</em> notes, you previously had to keep your computer on to stream satellite video to your iOS device.<span class="blueLinks"> Look for the device to start shipping on November 22nd for &pound;189.95 (or about $300), while the EyeTV app will set you back an extra &pound;2.99.<br />

Here at Engadget HQ, there's hardly a more <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/12/engadgets-gear-of-ces-2010/">overused piece of equipment</a> than Elgato's (Mac only) <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/19/elgato-ships-1080p-friendly-turbo-264-hd-video-conversion-dongle/">Turbo.264 HD</a> -- in our experience, it chews through bloated video files at a breakneck pace, leaving us with shrunken versions of CES hands-on and the like without any noticeable degradation in quality. Now, that same functionality is being introduced sans an easy-to-forget USB dongle as the Turbo.264 HD Software Edition. For all intents and purposes, the SE version does the exact same thing as the original, albeit at a presumably slower pace. 'Course, it'll still convert videos for use on portable devices (or just shrink the files sizes for easier archiving) far quicker than whatever method you're using now, and the $49.95 price tag is certainly a bit easier to swallow. Oh, and speaking of MSRPs -- Elgato just hacked $50 from the price of the hardware-accelerated version, leaving it at a delectable $99.95. Mmm, files. <em>Delicious</em>.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/15/elgato-debuts-turbo-264-hd-software-edition-cuts-price-of-hardw/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Elgato debuts Turbo.264 HD Software Edition, cuts price of hardware edition</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/15/elgato-debuts-turbo-264-hd-software-edition-cuts-price-of-hardw/">Elgato debuts Turbo.264 HD Software Edition, cuts price of hardware edition</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 15 Jul 2010 13:33:00 EST. How's that Apple tattoo treating you? Good, good. Well, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Elgato/">Elgato</a> has something for the faithful: the new EyeTV HD. The device grabs a 1080i signal over component from your DVR or cable box or Blu-ray player, and records that video to your Mac using Elgato's own desktop DVR software. The shows can then be auto-transcoded to iPhone or iPad-friendliness, providing you a bit of much needed Animal Planet during your commute the next day. That's all well and good, but the real kicker is the live streaming the device can push to your iPad or iPhone, using an IR blaster to change the channel on your cable box. It's all rosy except for the fact that you'll need to plug this directly into your Mac <em>and</em> your cable box, meaning that they'll have to be in fairly close proximity (there's a six foot USB cable included). The unit retails for $200 and is available now directly from Elgato or Apple stores. PR is after the break.<br />
<br />
We haven't plugged in the box yet, but we played around with Elgato's setup using an iPad 3G and found it pretty impressive. The streaming quality isn't really at, say, a Netflix level (it's more suited to a phone screen), but it's certainly passable, and the interface for browsing your own channels and recordings is very pleasant. We also loved the inclusion of meta data and chapters in the recorded shows and movies that had been loaded onto the device (you can check that out in the gallery below). Elgato might've just released the most elegant "analog hole" yet. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/elgato-eyetv-hd-press-shots/">Elgato EyeTV HD press shots</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/elgato-eyetv-hd-press-shots/#3008748"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/05/elgato-eyetv-01-gal_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/elgato-eyetv-hd-press-shots/#3008745"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/05/elgato-eyetv-02-gal_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/elgato-eyetv-hd-press-shots/#3008744"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/05/elgato-eyetv-03-gal_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/elgato-eyetv-hd-press-shots/#3008743"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/05/elgato-eyetv-04-gal_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/elgato-eyetv-hd-press-shots/#3008742"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/05/elgato-eyetv-05-gal_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div> <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/elgato-eyetv-hd/">Elgato EyeTV HD hands-on</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/elgato-eyetv-hd/#3008778"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/05/elgato-eyetvhd-01-hands_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/elgato-eyetv-hd/#3008777"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/05/elgato-eyetvhd-02-hands_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/elgato-eyetv-hd/#3008776"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/05/elgato-eyetvhd-03-hands_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/elgato-eyetv-hd/#3008775"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/05/elgato-eyetvhd-04-hands_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/elgato-eyetv-hd/#3008773"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/05/elgato-eyetvhd-05-hands_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/24/elgatos-eyetv-hd-records-shows-to-your-mac-slings-live-to-your/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Elgato's EyeTV HD records shows to your Mac, slings live to your iPad</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/24/elgatos-eyetv-hd-records-shows-to-your-mac-slings-live-to-your/">Elgato's EyeTV HD records shows to your Mac, slings live to your iPad</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 24 May 2010 11:48:00 EST. <div style="text-align: left;">Elgato's original <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/07/elgato-refreshes-its-eyetv-hybrid-tuner/">EyeTV Hybrid USB tuner</a> wasn't exactly oversized, but the company has nonetheless managed shrink things down a bit for the device's latest revision, and it's added some Windows 7 support for good measure. Most of the size reduction comes from ditching the analog connector found on the previous model (you'll still get an adapter), and you'll also now get a sturdier aluminum enclosure that stays in line with the company's Mac-only roots. Otherwise, you'll get the same support for over-the-air HD broadcasts as before, along with Elgato's EyeTV 3 software, and an included remote control -- all for the same $150 that the original model cost.</div>

Looking to catch some of those OTA HDTV signals that your local affiliate is beaming through your brain of late? Well, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/elgato">Elgato</a>'s EyeTV One would like to show your PC or Mac how, but you'd better not get any wild ideas about plugging into some of your old analog sources like cable or your VCR. Just don't. The EyeTV One is billed as a cheaper, stripped-down alternative to the EyeTV Hybrid, and at around $100 (on certain online retailers) it's about $30 cheaper. Is erasing your sordid past with analog technologies worth saving $30 to you? Do you <em>really</em> want to spend five hours tonight adjusting your OTA antenna to catch <em>CSI: The Real Housewives of Jersey Shore</em> in HD? So many questions that need answering.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/13/elgatos-eyetv-one-sticks-to-atsc-leaves-analog-out-in-the-cold/">Elgato's EyeTV One sticks to ATSC, leaves analog out in the cold</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 13 Jan 2010 13:32:00 EST. Sure, the MPAA won't be happy that you're not just <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/07/mpaa-suggests-teachers-videotape-tvs-instead-of-ripping-dvds-se/">videotaping your TV</a>, but the Mac users out there still looking for some real-time SD recording action might want to check out Elgato's Video Capture box. Nothing too fancy here, just RCA / S-Video / SCART input and some software to trim clips and export to H.264 and MPEG-4, but it could be just the ticket if you've got a stack of VHS tapes or something. Out in Europe now for &euro;100 ($134), we'll let you know when it comes Stateside.<br /> <br /> [Via <a href="http://www.electronista.com/articles/09/05/08/elgato.video.capture/">Electronista</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gadgets/" rel="tag">Misc. Remember that brilliant <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/2007/04/06/elgatos-turbo-264-gets-date-and-price/">Turbo.264 video conversion dongle</a> that shipped like, two whole years ago? Yeah, it's successor has just hit the streets, and it's as ready as ever for 1080p content. The predictably titled <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/tag/Elgato/">Elgato</a> Turbo.264 HD plugs directly into one's Mac and converts files up to 1080p (from camcorders, digital cameras, etc.) into files that are perfectly formatted for iPods, PSPs or other media players. The bundled software also lets users preview and trim video clips before converting, and it saves folks the time and hassle of importing into iMovie, learning commands, rendering and exporting. Reportedly, a video that would take an hour to convert to an iPod-friendly file takes just 15 minutes with this here dongle, and if that's worth $149.95 to you, you're one click away from brightening your own day.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.electricpig.co.uk/2009/03/19/elgato-turbo264-hd-launches/">Electricpig</a>]<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/elgato-ships-1080p-friendly-turbo-264-hd-video-conversion-dongle/">Elgato ships 1080p-friendly Turbo.264 HD video conversion dongle</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/elgato-ships-1080p-friendly-turbo-264-hd-video-conversion-dongle/#1441247"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgethd.com/media/2009/03/turbo.264-hd_6_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/elgato-ships-1080p-friendly-turbo-264-hd-video-conversion-dongle/#1441248"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgethd.com/media/2009/03/turbo.264-hd_1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/elgato-ships-1080p-friendly-turbo-264-hd-video-conversion-dongle/#1441249"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgethd.com/media/2009/03/turbo.264-hd_2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/elgato-ships-1080p-friendly-turbo-264-hd-video-conversion-dongle/#1441250"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgethd.com/media/2009/03/turbo.264-hd_3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/elgato-ships-1080p-friendly-turbo-264-hd-video-conversion-dongle/#1441251"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgethd.com/media/2009/03/turbo.264-hd_4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/peripherals/" rel="tag">Peripherals</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/portablevideo/" rel="tag">Portable Video</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/19/elgato-ships-1080p-friendly-turbo-264-hd-video-conversion-dongle/">Elgato ships 1080p-friendly Turbo.264 HD video conversion dongle</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 19 Mar 2009 18:11:00 EST. Yes we know this is not news, but you'd think it was based on the various stories around the web like this one from Yahoo Tech. We don't mean to pick on this one specifically because honestly it is a very common mistake -- although this particular article is way off as <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/17/apple-itunes-multimedia-throwing-hdcp-flags-on-new-macbook-mac/">the newer Macs do support HDCP</a> -- but as draconian as <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/CableLabs/">CableLabs</a> and the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/AACS/">AACS</a> can be, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/analoghole/">analog hole</a> is still open. Now that doesn't mean these DRM requirements aren't crazy or that this protected path we always hear about is a joking matter, but it is all for naught when the HD signal hits the analog outputs -- the digital outputs do require HDCP though. This means you can watch any Blu-ray Disc or digital cable program recorded with an <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/dct">ATI Digital Cable Tuner</a> at full 1080i via VGA or component -- Blu-ray Discs can be played back at 1080p via VGA <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/08/16/cea-turns-down-1080p-over-component-proposal/">but component doesn't support it</a>. Now we're not trying to say this will always be the case, as both technologies support <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/31/fcc-chairman-doesnt-support-hollywoods-request-for-selectabl/">down-rezzing via analog outputs</a>, but as it stands now <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/05/20/ict-a-non-issue-till-at-least-2010/">these bits</a> have never turned on. Now to the main point of this particular article, which is why Macs don't have a CableCARD option. Our best guess would be that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Elgato/">Elgato</a> doesn't want to pony up the $200k for the CableLabs certification process and honestly we don't blame 'em.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/blu-ray/" rel="tag">Blu-ray</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/media-pcs/" rel="tag">Media PCs</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/01/cablecard-recordings-and-blu-ray-play-at-full-resolution-over-an/">CableCARD recordings and Blu-ray play at full resolution over analog outputs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sun, 01 Feb 2009 20:41:00 EST. Until now, people wanting a Mac HTPC that takes advantage of the good old analog hole have been limited to using the Hauppauge <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/HD+PVR/">HD-PVR</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/sagetv">SageTV</a>. Thanks to Elgato adding support for the hardware into its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/eyetv/">EyeTV</a> software, however, there should be some choice soon. Support for the hardware has been in beta since November, but users with a little bit of nerve can sign up to get in on the action. The HD-PVR may not be the most elegant solution to recording protected HD content down to disk, but at least it's workable; so if you're an EyeTV user who's been itching to add something beyond Clear QAM to your DVR's diet it's worth checking out.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/dvrs/" rel="tag">DVRs</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/media-pcs/" rel="tag">Media PCs</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/others/" rel="tag">Others</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/09/elgato-adds-support-for-the-hauppauge-hd-pvr/">Elgato adds support for the Hauppauge HD-PVR</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 09 Jan 2009 03:41:00 EST. It's been almost a year since <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/elgato">Elgato</a> refreshed its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/17/elgato-updates-eyetv-hybrid-250-plus-tv-tuners-clear-qam-now/">EyeTV Hybrid</a> tuner, and while the addition of better reception and a FM radio tuner aren't earth-shattering, it's awfully hard to complain about how much the company has crammed into the Cear-QAM 1080i-tuning USB stick aimed at Mac users. The $150 dongle includes a year-long subscription to TV Guide for your scheduling convenience, but you'll have to fork over $20 per year for the service after that. There will be a new 3.1 version of EyeTV available later this month, but you can pick up the fresh hardware right now.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hdtv/" rel="tag">HDTV</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/homeentertainment/" rel="tag">Home Entertainment</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/mediapcs/" rel="tag">Media PCs</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/07/elgato-refreshes-its-eyetv-hybrid-tuner/">Elgato refreshes its EyeTV Hybrid tuner </a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 07 Jan 2009 05:15:00 EST. There will be a new 3.1 version of EyeTV available later this month, but you can pick up the fresh hardware right now.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/media-pcs/" rel="tag">Media PCs</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/tuners/" rel="tag">Tuners</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/others/" rel="tag">Others</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/ota/" rel="tag">OTA</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/07/elgato-refreshes-its-eyetv-hybrid-tuner/">Elgato refreshes its EyeTV Hybrid tuner </a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 07 Jan 2009 02:47:00 EST. Folks traveling to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/01/18/digital-television-part-ii-global-status/">DVB-T / Freeview land</a> (that would be across the pond for you Yankees) should certainly give thought to how they're going to receive their much needed dose of OTA programming while there. If you're still living without a USB tuner, have a gander at Elgato's latest. The EyeTV DTT Deluxe snaps right into any spare USB port (on a Mac, that is) and picks up DVB-T / Freeview signals within range. Bundled in, you'll find the recently released <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/12/elgatos-eyetv-3-0-2-update-brings-h-264-broadcast-support/">EyeTV 3</a> software, two types of aerial antennas and an EyeTV remote. Folks in Europe can snatch the unit right now for &euro;79.95 ($126), and while we're hoping for an ATSC version to surface shortly, there's nothing to signify that our dreams are close to coming true.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.123macmini.com/news/story/988.html">123MacMini</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/tuners/" rel="tag">Tuners</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/others/" rel="tag">Others</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/13/elgatos-usb-eyetv-dtt-deluxe-tuner-handles-dvb-t-freeview/">Elgato's USB EyeTV DTT Deluxe tuner handles DVB-T / Freeview</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sun, 13 Jul 2008 11:45:00 EST. Merely months after Elgato launched <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/16/elgato-delivers-eyetv-3-new-ui-smart-guides-and-network-shari/">EyeTV 3</a>, along comes an update to make it even more attractive -- particularly outside of American borders. EyeTV 3.0.2 adds in full support for H.264 digital broadcasts in standard-def and HDTV resolutions, and considering that locales such as Norway and New Zealand are already beaming out material via this standard, we'd say it's a welcome inclusion. Beyond that, the new version also provides QuickTime exporting of ATSC / NTSC Closed Captions for use on iPhone, iPod and Apple TV devices (seen above), but obviously, that's for North America alone. You'll also find a few new deinterlacing options, improved on-screen menus and a handful of bug fixes to boot. Venture on down to the read link to read up on all the changes and get your download a-movin'.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.itwire.com/content/view/18139/1151/">ITWire</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/tuners/" rel="tag">Tuners</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/others/" rel="tag">Others</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/ota/" rel="tag">OTA</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/12/elgatos-eyetv-3-0-2-update-brings-h-264-broadcast-support/">Elgato's EyeTV 3.0.2 update brings H.264 broadcast support</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 12 May 2008 10:46:00 EST. It seems that Elgato was most proud of its totally <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/01/16/elgato-delivers-eyetv-3-new-ui-smart-guides-and-network-shari/">revamped EyeTV 3 software</a>, but we couldn't help but notice two rather substantial hardware updates that it also chose to announce (albeit quietly) at Macworld 2008. Starting today, the firm's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/08/17/el-gatos-eyetv-hybrid-digital-analog-tuner-for-macs/">EyeTV Hybrid</a> USB tuner and its EyeTV 250 Plus TV receiver / video converter (shown after the break) are both available with built-in support for unencrypted digital cable (Clear-QAM) channels. 'Course, they'll both still pull in NTSC / ATSC signals, but the addition of Clear-QAM support is a real boon for OTA addicts. Pricing for the extra versatile devices remains unchanged at $149.95 and $199.95, respectively, but unfortunately, existing owners will not be able to receive the newfound functionally with a simple firmware update.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.elgato.com/elgato/na/mainmenu/products/hybrid/product1.en.html">Read</a> - Elgato EyeTV Hybrid<br /><a href="http://www.elgato.com/elgato/na/mainmenu/products/250plus/product1.en.html">Read</a> - Elgato EveTV 250 Plus<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/17/elgato-updates-eyetv-hybrid-250-plus-tv-tuners-clear-qam-now/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Elgato updates EyeTV Hybrid / 250 Plus TV tuners: Clear-QAM now welcome</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hdtv/" rel="tag">HDTV</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/homeentertainment/" rel="tag">Home Entertainment</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/17/elgato-updates-eyetv-hybrid-250-plus-tv-tuners-clear-qam-now/">Elgato updates EyeTV Hybrid / 250 Plus TV tuners: Clear-QAM now welcome</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 17 Jan 2008 03:59:00 EST. For those who didn't realize that Macworld actually does keep on spinnin' once Mr. Jobs <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/15/live-from-macworld-2008-steve-jobs-keynote/">darts back</a> to Cupertino, here's a little more proof. Elgato Systems is using the remaining spotlight in San Francisco to showcase its latest iteration of EyeTV, and we must say, we're digging the additions. Aside from the completely new user interface tweaked to match Leopard, users of EyeTV 3 will also notice an "extended program guide featuring intelligent searching and recording functionality," enhanced network sharing, Smart Playlists, bolstered AppleScript support and an integrated video editor. If that rundown has you overcome with the itch to upgrade, you can do so for $39.95 (or free for users of EyeTV 2 who obtained their license after December 1, 2007), and if you're looking to start fresh, you can snag the software right now for $79.95.<br /> <br /> [Via <a href="http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,141421-pg,1/article.html">PCWorld</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hdtv/" rel="tag">HDTV</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/homeentertainment/" rel="tag">Home Entertainment</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/portablevideo/" rel="tag">Portable Video</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/16/elgato-delivers-eyetv-3-new-ui-smart-guides-and-network-shari/">Elgato delivers EyeTV 3: new UI, smart guides, and network sharing</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 16 Jan 2008 22:14:00 EST. At the time we didn't know much about the product, but now our friends from Elgato have filled us in. The Turbo.264 will be available in the US by the end of April with a MSRP of $99. We also learned that the device can encode any video that QuickTime can handle, including 3rd party QuickTime components and that any software that supports QuickTime Export, including EyeTV's very own one click export, is supported. The bad news is that while the device can help you encode your HD clips to H.264, the maximum output resolution is limited to 800x600.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/other-hardware/" rel="tag">Other hardware</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/04/06/elgatos-turbo-264-gets-date-and-price/">Elgato's Turbo.264 gets date and price</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 06 Apr 2007 14:31:00 EST. It's taking a bit longer than expected, but sure enough, manufacturers are coming out of the woodwork to give the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/ipod/">iPod</a> / <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/iphone/">iPhone</a>-to-be customers an easy way to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/search/?q=convert+ipod">convert videos</a> to H.264. Following <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/15/ads-techs-instant-video-to-go-offers-up-ipod-psp-video-conver/">ADS Tech</a>'s lead, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/search/?q=elgato">Elgato</a> is on the scene with a Mac-compatible USB stick that acts as a hardware encoder to get your clips and flicks from whatever format they're currently in (within reason, we presume) into a format widely recognized by Apple-branded paraphernalia. Reportedly, the device speeds up the encoding process "by two to four times," and partially relieves your Mac's CPU of the transcoding duties by handling most of the dirty work (shown after the break) within itself. So if you're more interested in forking over your hard-earned cash for an easy solution to your file conversion needs, Elgato's Turbo 264 should be landing around the April timeframe for &euro;99 ($132).<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://iphone-scene.com/iphone-forums/iphone-software-forum/2007/apr/02/h-264-hardware-encoder-mac-encode-movies-ipod-apple-">iPhone-Scene</a>]<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/04/02/elgatos-turbo-264-usb-stick-painlessly-coverts-vidz-to-h-264/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Elgato's Turbo 264 USB stick painlessly coverts vidz to H.264</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/other-hardware/" rel="tag">Other hardware</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/others/" rel="tag">Others</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/apple/" rel="tag">Apple</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/04/02/elgatos-turbo-264-usb-stick-painlessly-coverts-vidz-to-h-264/">Elgato's Turbo 264 USB stick painlessly coverts vidz to H.264</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 02 Apr 2007 20:12:00 EST. The USB 2.0 stick makes for easy travel, and this rendition sports dual attachable antennas and a DSP, "which uses information from both tuners to generate the best signal possible." Designed to work with DTT / <a href="http://www.engadget.com/search/?q=DVB-T">DVB-T</a> signals, the device supports dual tuner functionality, PIP, scheduled recordings via the included EveTV 2 software, and a one-year subscription to the "tvtv" program guide. It touts seamless integration with Toast 7, and even provides easy converting for use on video-playing iPods. The company also notes that 1080i and 720p viewing / recording is possible on Macs housing "dual PowerPC G5 or <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/10/24/macbook-pros-go-core-2-duo-at-last/">Intel Core Duo</a>" processors, and the dual-tuner USB stick can be picked up now on the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/uk/">other side</a> of the pond for &euro;149.95 ($191).<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://digg.com/apple/EyeTV_release_new_Digital_TV_Tuner_for_Mac">digg</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hdtv/" rel="tag">HDTV</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/homeentertainment/" rel="tag">Home Entertainment</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/portablevideo/" rel="tag">Portable Video</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/11/07/elgato-unveils-dual-tuner-eyetv-diversity-usb-stick-in-the-uk/">Elgato unveils dual-tuner EyeTV Diversity USB stick in the UK</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 07 Nov 2006 16:19:00 EST. Now you can veg out on your MacBook Pro with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/05/23/miglias-tvmax-external-tuner-for-the-mac-mini/">Miglia Technology</a>'s new TVBook Pro, which was announced today. This portable digital TV receiver (it handles DVB-T) fits nicely into your ExpressCard slot (with an included amplified antenna that plugs into your USB port) and also includes <a href="http://engadget.com/tag/elgato">Elgato</a>'s EyeTV software, which will let you watch and record your favorite shows direct to your Mac. But American TV fans, start emailing Maglia now, because for now there's no word on when we'll get it stateside, but our lucky European cousins will get the TVBook Pro will retail for &euro;149 this October. That aside, Maglia seems to also have included time travel equipment inside this little device. As the press release says: "Reinvent your TV experience by pausing, rewinding or even skipping forward live TV, ensuring you never miss any part of what you are watching." Yes, we understand that the company means you can fast forward stuff you've already recorded, but that's not how it's written. Unless they mean to say that they've torn the flux capacitor out of Doc Brown's DeLorean, in which case Miglia needs to call us right away to explain how it works.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/homeentertainment/" rel="tag">Home Entertainment</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/laptops/" rel="tag">Laptops</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/09/11/miglia-tvbook-pro-records-live-dtv/">Miglia TVBook Pro, records live DTV</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 11 Sep 2006 17:53:00 EST. It was only a few weeks ago we spied the <a href="http://www.hdbeat.com/2006/07/19/a-couple-of-mini-usb-atsc-tuners-artec-t14a-and-fujuplus-fd-usb7/">first ATSC tuner in thumbdrive</a> form but it wasn't Mac compatible. El Gato, maker of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2005/01/12/elgatos-eyetv-wonder-for-mac/">Eye500</a>, has our back though and just announced the EyeTV Hybrid digital/analog tuner just for Macs. The tuner is in the form of a small thumb-drive that utilizes USB 2.0 to deliver analog or digital TV to your Mac. Just plug it and go. Well, you might have to use the antenna if you aren't in an area with generous NTSC/ATSC coverage. Or you the included break-out cables will allow you to plug in an old VCR, DVD player or game system as long as you covert the signal to coax. El Gato's EyeTV 2 software is wrote natively for OS X and will allow you to record in MPEG-2 -- that is if your Mac has enough power. The tuner is currently available for $150 on their site.<br /><br />[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/industry/" rel="tag">Industry</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/ota/" rel="tag">OTA</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/08/17/el-gatos-mini-atsc-tuner-macs-only/">El Gato's mini-ATSC tuner -- Mac's only</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 17 Aug 2006 10:49:00 EST. You know you need it: that squishy soft gaze that comes with the kind of numb only a TV can deliver at the end of a hard day. El Gato knows this too, and delivers yet another fix to Mac owners in the form of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/search/?q=eyetv">EyeTV</a> Hybrid. As the name implies, this USB 2.0 stick delivers both hi-definition capable digital ATSC and traditional analog NTSC tuners to record (in MPEG-2 if your Mac has the muscle), edit, and pause live TV when combined with El Gato's bundled EyeTV 2 software. What's more, the kit works with the Apple Remote and includes a break-out cable for connecting composite and S-Video sources like your gaming rig -- for "zero latency" play on your Mac's display -- or that dusty VCR to convert the ol' VHS collection into digital media. Inputs that owners of Apple's stellar, but otherwise inflexible, 30-inch displays will certainly appreciate. Available now for $150 or &euro;150 for our DVB-T signal lovin' brethren. <br /><br />[Thanks, Doug]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/homeentertainment/" rel="tag">Home Entertainment</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/portablevideo/" rel="tag">Portable Video</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/08/17/el-gatos-eyetv-hybrid-digital-analog-tuner-for-macs/">El Gato's EyeTV Hybrid digital/analog tuner for Macs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 17 Aug 2006 09:25:00 EST.
