Netflix has long been establishing itself as the go-to place for stand-up comedy specials. In fact, it might lay claim to having the best ones around after dominating the Best Comedy Album category in this year's Grammy nominations.
What's coming to Netflix in December: 'Mowgli,' 'Roma' and Springsteen
You might already be preparing to spend the holidays watching Avengers: Infinity War on repeat after it arrives on Netflix on Christmas Day, but there will be plenty of other new shows and movies for you to check out on the streaming service over the last month of the year. Among the big original movies are a version of The Jungle Book called Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle (December 7th) and Gravity director Alfonso Cuarón's Oscar contender Roma (December 14th). Another awards hopeful, Susanne Bier's Bird Box, will be available December 21st, and a Jennifer Aniston vehicle, Dumplin', debuts December 7th.
Ellen DeGeneres' return to stand-up arrives on Netflix December 18th
Ellen DeGeneres hinted over a year ago that she'd return to stand-up specials through Netflix, and that revival is now close at hand. Netflix has announced that DeGeneres' comedy one-off Relatable will premiere on the streaming service December 18th. The teaser clip doesn't say much about what to expect, but it does have DeGeneres engaging in some tongue-in-cheek name-dropping as she confirms the premiere over and over again.
Ellen coyly hints at return to standup with Netflix special
It's been over 15 years since Ellen DeGeneres took the stage for a proper stand-up special. With a smash hit daytime talk show, a record-setting Twitter account and bonafide American treasure status, DeGeneres doesn't exactly need the exposure of another special, but Netflix has been on a hot streak recently, nabbing up standup specials from comedy heavyweights and up-and-coming talent alike. So, the streaming company reached out to DeGeneres on her platform of choice to see if she'd be game for another solo show. Her response? "OK I'm in."
YouTube brings in big names like Ellen and Kevin Hart for new shows
During its big Brandcast presentation YouTube made a pitch to advertisers based on some well-known names, with new shows on the way from Kevin Hart, Ellen DeGeneres, Demi Lovato and Katy Perry. Interestingly, this year's slate of offerings is coming to YouTube for free, instead of the subscription Red package. YouTube's message is that "Prime Time has gone online," where it claims that more 18-49-year-olds visit YouTube than any TV network. It's an interesting angle, particularly considering that YouTube just launched its own live TV package earlier this year.
Ellen Degeneres launches a network with YouTube, Snapchat stars
Ellen Degeneres is leveling up with the launch of her own network, the Ellen Digital Network, which will create content for online platforms and television. YouTube powerhouse Tyler Oakley has signed on to help build original programming for the web and TV alike, while the two stars behind the viral "Damn, Daniel" videos are building an original series for Snapchat. This new venture is a partnership with Warner Bros. Television.
Netflix and Ellen are making a 'Green Eggs and Ham' TV show
Hulu picked up Seinfeld, and now Netflix is working on a new show with Ellen DeGeneres -- but it's not a mid-90s sitcom at all. The two will create a 13-episode series based on the Dr. Seuss book Green Eggs and Ham that's due to arrive in 2018, aimed at kids around the world. According to Deadline, the writer behind the project is Jared Stern, who wrote Wreck-It Ralph, and has been trying to make a show based on the book for years. Also, the report claims this is supposed to be the "most expensive" animated show ever created for television. Ellen seems excited about it in her video announcement (included after the break, but I think if there's a high-budget Game of Thrones-rivaling Dr. Seuss adaptation in the works, then The Butter Battle Book might have been a better choice.

Ellen Degeneres Show going HD on September 8th
High fives all around, The Ellen Degeneres Show is finally making the leap to high-definition. We've been wondering when this mega-hit would ditch its SD ways and start showing up during our morning yoga classes in high-def, and it appears that Monday, September 8th is the day to circle in your date planner. The show will be moving to a new state-of-the-art production facility on the Warner Bros. Studios lot, where it will be produced and broadcast in glorious HD. The sixth season of the show (which has been renewed through 2010 - 2011) will be shot from the completely tapeless Stage 1 complex, and considering the 50-percent increase in seating capacity, quite a few more guests will be able to squeeze in and check things out live.
