Eric Nylund, author of Halo: The Fall of Reach and writer for both Gears of War and supplemental Halo: Reach materials, has revealed his new job as Director of Narrative Design at Amazon Game Studios. As Couch Campus reports, Nylund left Microsoft Games in July, but had said nothing about his new gig until a recent Facebook posting revealed a business card with "Amazon Game Studios" emblazoned on the front. "I can't talk about specifics," Nylund wrote. "But I wouldn't be there unless something cool was brewing." It's difficult to speculate on what this means for the future of Amazon, as the only Amazon Games Studio game in existence right now is Air Patriots, which isn't quite on the same level as the Halo and Gears franchises. It will be interesting to see if Nylund can expand Amazon's library beyond the typical mobile and casual games, and bring the type of blockbuster stories he's known for. Update: This article originally listed Eric Nylund as a writer on Halo: Reach. While technically true, Nylund's contributions were to physical, supplemental materials included in the game's various collector's editions, rather than the game itself. The text of this article has been updated to better reflect Nylund's contributions to the series and history as an author.

If your wallet is too constrained to shell out 13 bucks for a new book, or if your living space is ridiculously cramped, you'll be happy to know that the latest Halo novel, Ghosts of Onyx, is now available in paperback. The paperback is significantly smaller than the previously released trade paperback and comes in at a cool $7.95. Ghosts of Onyx chronicles the creation of the top secret Spartan-III program (the Chief is part of the Spartan-II program) and the ongoing Human Covenant War.Another little nugget of interest revealed in the press release, fans can expect at least two more Halo novels the coming years. Hopefully, Eric Nylund will reprise his role as author. Full press release after the break.

In Friday's weekly update at Bungie, there's a nice interview with Eric Nylund, author of the good Halo novels, The Fall of Reach and First Strike, as well as the upcoming Halo novel, Ghosts of Onyx. He chats about the Halo story bible, how he became involved with the Halo franchise in the first place, and he discusses the differences between writing a novel and writing a game. This is the man who's writing Gears of War, lest you missed that info. It's worth a read for those that like to learn about what goes into making video games. You can also check out Franky geeking out over some schweet ground textures. He also asks an important question: what's that weird non-Spartan armor on the lower right hand side of the cover? Any guesses?
