Sure it's a truism, but when it comes to waterproof camcorders, you really get what you pay for. It looks like Exemode's latest offering in that space cuts corners in the looks department, but what the hell? You can't really argue with a hi-def (720p), 12 megapixel camcorder that sports USB, HDMI, and A/V (NTSC and PAL) output, 32MB on-board memory, SD card support, and a $150 price tag. Did we mention that it's waterproof?

The Flip Video may be pocket-sized and ludicrously easy to use, but it's got nothing on Exemode's SQ28m Pocket Digital Camera when it comes to charm. This thing is small enough to fit on a keychain and, though the footage is recorded at a mere 320 x 240 and 8fps without audio, the inclusion of a number of color filters make results look more "retro 8mm" than "cheap digital" (see for yourself below). It starts shipping next week at ¥5,985 ($65), a bit too far above impulse-buy territory for us, but we're certainly more into this than the company's previous efforts.

It looks like the budget-minded folks at Exemode are back for one more go 'round, and they're now bumping things up into HD territory with their new DV580HD camcorder. While we obviously can't vouch for its overall quality, the camera will apparently let you record 720p video onto SDHC cards up to 8GB (or 32MB of internal memory in a pinch), or capture still images at up to 8 megapixels, although it seems you'll have to make do without an optical zoom of any sort. On the upside, it does only cost €155 (or about $220), and it says "HD" in big shiny letters, so it can't be all bad.[Via Akihabara News]

Although Exemode is entirely better known for its budget offerings than ones of professional allure, the firm's latest digital camera does sport one aspect that (somewhat) separates it from the uninspiring camera posse. The DC567 doesn't have a whole lot to offer, as its five-megapixel CMOS sensor, 12fps movie mode, fixed F3.2 lens, and two-inch LCD monitor could indeed provoke fits of snickering, but this compact point-and-shoot weighs in at just 80 grams (2.8 ounces) sans batteries. This lightweight cam also features 32MB of built-in memory, an SD card slot, USB 1.1 connectivity, and while it should only provide marginally better results than your current cameraphone, you can't help but appreciate the ¥10,000 ($82) pricetag it should carry when it lands next month.[Via FarEastGizmos]

Exemode leaves no question about who it's catering to with its uber-cheap, budget-friendly offerings, but we're not complaining with doing the camcorder thang on the cheap. While the firm has been down the pocket-sized road before, not to mention offering up quite the unique MP3 player, this five-megapixel camcorder sports the more typical handheld design. Offering up SD-based recording over the HDD / miniDV approaches, it can handle SD cards up to 2GB in size (sorry, no SDHC support here), and captures the good ole times in 640 x 480 MPEG4 at 30fps. Additionally, it can take stills in JPEG, record audio in WAV, features an (admittedly paltry) 4x digital zoom, rocks USB 2.0 / AV connectivity, and reportedly puts out just under seven hours of battery life. The best apart about this otherwise ho hum offering is indeed the price, as you aren't likely to be too disappointed after dropping just ¥14,800 ($125).[Via Impress]

  • Exemode DV308 pocket SD camcorder / MP3 player

If you've been eyeing all these glitzy SD camcorders, but can't conjure up the coin to afford such niceties, Japan's Exemode has released the DV308 for pocket-sized recording on the cheap. While Panasonic's latest effort may sport 3CCDs, and Sanyo touts 720p, that's not the DV308's game -- with a plain 'ole 3.2 megapixel CMOS sensor, the inability to play nice with SD cards over 2GB, and the not-so-legendary Japanese ODM build quality, this device provides a no frills, inexpensive way to record to SD. The biggest boon is its ability to utilize XviD compression rather than the more typical MPEG-4 / 2, which reportedly allows up to 1.5 hours of recording on a single 2GB card. An apparent last ditch effort to boost the feature set sees an MP3 player thrown into the mix, but this isn't likely to become your DAP of choice anytime soon. While you won't find stunning attributes nor remarkable storage capabilities on this SD camcorder, your wallet will greatly thank you after dropping just ¥19,800 ($171) on the DV308 in late August.[Via Impress]
