Some imaginative and resourceful game preservationists have reverse-engineered a long-lost F-Zero game from the mid-'90s. Faithful recreations of two BS F-Zero games, broadcast exclusively for Nintendo’s long-defunct Satellaview satellite gaming extension for the Super Famicom, are now available.

Nintendo just announced ‘F-Zero 99’, the first new game in the series in nearly 20 years. The company showed off the game at today’s Nintendo Direct and it looks to be a spiritual successor to recent online multiplayer titles like ‘Tetris 99’ and ‘Super Mario Bros. 35.’

To date, Nintendo has handed out NES games as bonuses with Switch Online subscriptions. But what about SNES titles? Thanks to some code sleuthing, you might have a hint of what's in the pipeline. Twitter user Kapu claims to have found references to 22 SNES games in Switch Online's code strings, many of them must-haves for fans. Mario is unsurprisingly well-represented with Super Mario World, Super Mario Kart and Super Mario All-Stars in the mix.

Nintendo helped kick off Seattle's annual PAX Prime gaming convention with a focus on the indie scene. The Nindies@Night event at the EMP Museum gave fans a chance to check out 19 indie games on the Wii U and 3DS -- and interact with the developers themselves. Among the highlights: Developer Shin'en showed off two-player split-screen support in its very F-Zero-esque Fast Racing Neo; Squad talked about bringing Wii U-specific features to Kerbal Space Program; and Yacht Club Games unveiled a certain shovel-wielding Amiibo figure.

Nintendo of America confirmed the crossover Mario Kart 8 DLC packs spotted yesterday on the company's UK site, with the Zelda pack due to launch stateside in November and the Animal Crossing one in May 2015. Both packs will be available for pre-order starting today, each priced at $8. However, if you know you're going to get both, you can save 25 percent by ordering the $12 two-in-one bundle. The saving doesn't apply if you buy both packs separately, unfortunately. On the flip side, anyone who buys both packs unlocks eight new colors of Yoshi and Shy Guy "immediately," in case you're in immediate need of some technicolor racing.

Nintendo has taken a few steps to modernize its gaming experience, but downloadable content (DLC) is still a sore point; even New Super Luigi U is more of a separate (and fairly expensive) title than a proper booster pack. Today, though, there are signs that the company is getting serious about improving its less-than-stellar reputation with add-ons. Nintendo has offered a sneak peek at a Mario Kart 8 expansion that adds The Legend of Zelda's Link, F-Zero's Blue Falcon ship and eight new courses, among other things -- that's a lot of goodies to keep you coming back. It should arrive in November for $8, and Animal Crossing-themed DLC due next May will add similar numbers of cars, characters and tracks.

  • Miyamoto unsure where to take F-Zero franchise

Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto stalled hopes for a F-Zero return after saying he doesn't know which direction to take with the franchise. Speaking to IGN at E3, Miyamoto said there's "only so much capacity" within Nintendo's internal staff, where the next hypothetical entry would likely be developed. "I certainly understand that people want a new F-Zero game," Miyamoto told IGN. "I think where I struggle is that I don't really have a good idea for what's new that we could bring to F-Zero that would really turn it into a great game again. Certainly I can see how people looking at Mario Kart 8 could see, through the anti-gravity, a connection to F-Zero. But I don't know, at this point, what direction we could go in with a new F-Zero." Miyamoto added that, while Nintendo brought other developers to properties like Star Fox and F-Zero previously, the company would prefer to develop those series "internally" from now on. He also noted he's been trying to increase the company's internal staff to allow for more ongoing projects at any time. F-Zero Climax, released only in Japan in 2004, represents the last F-Zero game, but it's approaching ten years since the series' last major entry: F-Zero GX on the GameCube. Going by Miyamoto's comments, the best that can be hoped for now is Captain Falcon's return in the upcoming Super Smash Bros. - and even that, like the Cap, is up in the air.

The Wii U Virtual Console launch list is slim and trim, largely mirroring the initial list of games we got earlier this month: Balloon Fight, Donkey Kong Jr., Excitebike, Ice Climbers, Kirby's Adventure, Punch Out, F-Zero and Super Mario World. A handful of these games were already available on the Wii U, via the Virtual Console's early preview. If you've forgotten what all of these games look like (it has been a long time, after all), check out some screens on the Wii U Facebook page. Virtual Console is scheduled to launch this week.

F-Zero GX for GameCube was one of a pair of games. It was released concurrently with F-Zero AX, a game designed for the Sega/Namco/Nintendo "Triforce" arcade platform, which connected to the home game via memory cards to unlock tracks. AX had arcade-style timed gameplay, along with those tracks.Modder "Ralf" found that the full code for the arcade game is hidden on the GameCube disc – and accessible with a series of codes for the Action Replay cheat device. The long list of codes is found on The Cutting Room Floor (a site which, if this is your first visit, you're welcome). Now, someone go peek in Mario Kart: Double Dash and see if Arcade GP is in there.

European Wii U owners get to play F-Zero at the same speed as North Americans - always handy with a racing game - when the SNES classic arrives on the Wii U's Virtual Console this week. The news of the 60Hz version coming to Europe follows the criticism Nintendo received last month for releasing a 50Hz version of Balloon Fight.Games running at 50Hz, which they used to in Europe because over there older TV sets only displayed the lower refresh rate, run noticeably slower than their 60Hz counterparts, as clearly demonstrated by audio and side-by-side comparisons.F-Zero isn't the only Nintendo download racing into Europe this week. Demos for Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (both on 3DS and Wii U), Trine 2: Director's Cut on Wii U, and Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate on 3DS are speeding their way there, as is a full-blown releases for NightSky on 3DS.

Yesterday's very awesome trailer for a Mega Man movie got us thinking. What game property would you like to see made into a film? Hollywood has tried to do it several times and pretty much failed through and through, but with what source material would you like them to try to make a competent film? A Legend of Zelda movie? Would you like to see F-Zero: The Movie? Well, out with it!

Another Assist Trophy was revealed over at the dojo today in Lyn, a character from the GBA game Fire Emblem. Wielding a weapon of similar stature to another Assist Trophy, her attacks are more deliberate and less on the reckless side like Samurai Goroh. Aside from that, the site suggests that once you summon her, you grab your enemy and hold on to them, allowing her attack to hit them point blank for massive damage. %Gallery-6869% %Gallery-3347%

  • F-Zero X, Street Fighter II Turbo rush onto Virtual Console

Today's Virtual Console releases, scheduled to go live at 9AM PST, are all about pushing the pedal to the metal in our quest to satisfy the need for speed and finally outrun the terrible writing clichés and racing game references pursuing us. Europe's 100th Virtual Console game, F-Zero X, has you hurtling about futuristic tracks at absurd speeds, Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting has you hurting Chun Li even quicker than before and China Warrior has... uh... released much faster than we expected! Yeah, let's go with that. F-Zero X (N64, 1-4 players, 1000 Wii Points): The N64's hover-car racer pushed the series forward in the best way that was possible at the time -- it added a prominent "X" to the title. It wasn't until later that we learned that adding a "GX" was the ultimate masterstroke. Street Fighter II Turbo Edition: Hyper Fighting (SNES, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points): With mention of both the words "Turbo" and "Hyper" in the title, it becomes clear that this game is indeed a bit faster than The World Warriors. Enjoy it before those fancy HD characters start punching your eyeballs. China Warrior (TurboGrafx-16, 1 player, 600 Wii Points): A side-scrolling action game depicting either gaming's most fragile hero ever, or just some tough guy in China.

The N64's ludicrously kinetic racer, F-Zero X (or F0X, if you want to be trite) today marks the 100th release on Nintendo's European Virtual Console service. Pro-G reports that the game arrives on the PAL Wii at a cost of 1000 Wii Points and is joined by side-scrolling TurboGrafx platformer, J.J. & Jeff, for 600 Wii Points.America's Virtual Console received its 100th title last week in the form of Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, highlighting Nintendo's steady release of retro titles since the Wii launched in November 2006. The quantity of titles is certainly not an issue, but the lack of enhancements and the occasional, questionable release makes passing judgment on quality and pricing more difficult, especially when we so easily get ourselves wrapped in the warm blanket of nostalgia. We expect things to get interesting once the Wii Shop joins Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network in providing original games.

You know, most of us here at Engadget couldn't help but get a bit misty eyed when we saw that new Wii Classic Controller and recalled our fond memories of many a' night spent with the SNES' Ol' Roundy. Of course, there's always that original rectangular classic NES controller that we saved the Princess with in "Super Mario Bros.", which will always have a fond place in our hearts. Whichever you prefer (or perhaps both), RetroUSB has just released SNES and NES controller adapters for the Nintendo Wii, letting your relive your mid-1980s and early 1990s memories of button-pushing in the 21st century; when you download the original Super Mario Bros. or the very first StarFox via Nintendo's Virtual Console service, you can now play them as they were meant to be played. These controller adapters will make the perfect addition for our F-Zero party this weekend -- Captain Falcon FTW!
