	What better way to welcome a new boy in town than just a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/08/meizu-mx-first-hands-on/">quick hands-on</a> with it? Well, how about throwing a mini phone party for the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/meizu%2Cmx">Meizu MX</a>? We just so happened to have a stash of phones with us today: the M9, iPhone 4S, Nokia N9, Xiaomi Phone, Galaxy S II and Galaxy Note. Conveniently, the MX's four-inch display lets it sit bang in the middle of the group, and the phone also turns out to be a tad thinner, narrower and shorter than the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/xiaomi+phone">Xiaomi Phone</a>. Of course, we'll dig a little deeper in our review, so stay tuned and enjoy our party pics for now.<br />

	<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/29/lenovo-lepad-s2005-vs-dell-streak-5-cuddle/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/cn.engadget.com/media/2011/11/dsc3166-1322589366.jpg" style="border-width: 0px; border-style: solid; margin: 4px;" /></a></div>
<br />
It's inevitable that these two 5-inch tabletphones -- the Dell <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Streak+5">Streak 5</a> on the left and the Lenovo <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/29/lenovo-launches-ideatab-s2005-aka-lepad-s2005-a-5-inch-ginger/">LePad S2005</a> on the right -- are to meet in the Chinese capital. With the exception of the slightly taller body on the S2005 everything else are suspiciously similar, especially the button and camera layout. Well, there's a good explanation for this: we've been informed that this new tabletphone hails from the same ODM, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/qisda">Qisda</a>, as Dell's counterpart. Too bad Lenovo decided to keep the same screen resolution though.<br />
<br />
According to Stone Ip from Engadget Chinese, he found that the S2005 has a nicer grip than the Streak, and he also digs its more masculine appearance -- obviously this is open to debate. Performance-wise this slate responded well to our input, but the lack of promise on an Ice Cream Sandwich update will probably make potential geeky buyers think twice. Well, good thing we have some awesome modders around the interwebs these days.<br />

From left to right, we've got the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/GalaxyNexus/">Galaxy Nexus</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/30/atandt-samsung-galaxy-s-ii-review/">Galaxy S II</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/04/nexus-one-review/">Nexus One</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/10/nexus-s-review/">Nexus S</a>. The panels on all of these guys are stunning, but we're finding it mighty difficult to choose a favorite between the Galaxy Nexus and the GSII. Just how thin is 7.1mm? Well, we could tell you (been there, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/18/motorola-droid-razr-hands-on/">done that</a>), or we can show you. And what better way to really drive the point home than with some head-to-head shots? We busted out our trusty iPhone 4 and the lead brick that is the first-generation Motorola Droid for good measure. And heck, we had the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/14/lg-marquee-hands-on-video/">LG Marquee</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/25/droid-incredible-2-review/">Droid Incredible 2</a> floating around, so we threw those into the mix, as well. So, who's the thinnest of them all? Why look at this! Samsung's very own <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/galaxy+tab+10.1">Galaxy Tab 10.1</a> decided to stop by in Beijing to greet Dell's latest tablet. As mentioned in our hands-on post, it's clear that the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/29/dell-streak-10-pro-tablet-makes-global-debut-in-china-we-go-han/">Streak 10 Pro</a> would need to go on a little diet to match the Korean tablet's lovely figure and weight, though the latter won't be released in the country until some time next month. Also, there's no doubt that Sammy will continue to ask for a premium price in exchange for the better display and portability, so our wallets will be the final judge. For now, just enjoy our quick and dirty comparison photos in the gallery below. You're welcome.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update: </strong>It appears that some of our readers are missing the point: the 16GB WiFi Galaxy Tab 10.1 is being sold for $499 in the US, and it'll most likely be more expensive in China; whereas the Streak 10 Pro is priced at just &yen;2,999 ($465). So again, you get what you pay for.<br />

The slugfest that is Apple vs. Samsung is getting uglier by the minute, as each one pushes the other's buttons in a presumed effort to get paid (or get the other to back down). Just as Apple was being told "<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/07/apples-request-for-preliminary-injunction-denied-amazons-apps/">no</a>" in a request for a preliminary injunction, it's hoping for a more satisfactory outcome from its most recent filing. That one's headed to the US International Trade Commission in Washington, where Apple's trying to block the import of the Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab, amongst other Samsung products. The ITC only stated "Electronic Digital Media Devices," but <i>FOSS Patents</i> has found five utility patents and a pair of design patents -- those encompass a grand total of six Sammy smartphones and a duo of slates. Analysts are stating that an outright ban on Samsung imports is unlikely (no shock there), and the most likely outcome here is a "settlement and cross-licensing deal." Mo' money, mo' problems, right?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/07/apple-files-itc-request-to-block-import-of-select-samsung-device/">Apple files ITC request to block import of select Samsung devices</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 07 Jul 2011 14:20:00 EST. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/28/nokia-n9-camera-sample-images-and-video/"><img border="1" hspace="4" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/11x06281514b32n9.jpg" vspace="4" /></a></div>
Our <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/21/nokia-n9-first-hands-on/">first encounter</a> with Nokia's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/n9">N9</a> may have been eleven different kinds of awesome, but we knew it was a mere scratch of the high-grade polycarbonate surface. One of the core pieces of functionality we didn't get the chance to address back then was the camera, and after Nokia decided to toot that horn recently -- saying, among other things, that it's the "<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/22/nokia-claims-n9-is-the-fastest-image-capturing-phone-yet/">fastest image-capturing phone</a>" yet -- we decided we had to go back for a second go-around.<br />
<br />
In terms of performance, Nokia's camera application definitely lives up to the company's own hype, with nearly instant captures and an equally brisk return to a state of readiness for more image-taking. When shooting video, we noted that audio recording starts slightly later than the video, leaving the first half second or so without sound. This isn't an uncommon issue (we've seen it on other phones and tablets) and can be seen in our video sample after the break. Now might be a good time to also mention that the N9s we tested with today were all prototype units, so don't prejudge Nokia's final hardware on the basis of what you see here. Unless your premature judgment is positive, we doubt Nokia would mind that.<br />
<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nokia-n9-camera-sample-images/">Nokia N9 camera sample images</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nokia-n9-camera-sample-images/#4257280"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/11d628439n9s_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nokia-n9-camera-sample-images/#4257300"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/11d6284109n9s_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nokia-n9-camera-sample-images/#4257271"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/11d628430n9s_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nokia-n9-camera-sample-images/#4257258"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/11d628417n9s_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nokia-n9-camera-sample-images/#4257263"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/11d628422n9s_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />
So anyhow, we took a walk around the company's offices, escorted by a group of unarmed but surely lethal Finnish ninjas, taking shots of the surrounding cityscape as we went. The results show the N9 picking up a ton of detail and controlling noise admirably, while a few impromptu ThinkPad hands-on photos convinced us it can do a pretty stellar job with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nokia-n9-camera-sample-images/#4257300">closeups</a> as well. With a name like <em>N9</em>, however, it was obvious which phone we needed to compare Nokia's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/25/nokias-stephen-elop-is-still-over-meego-even-if-the-n9-is-a-hi/">lone wolf</a> MeeGo handset to, so out came our trusty N8 with its world-beating 12 megapixel sensor. Alas, in spite of having an F2.2 aperture on the N9, Nokia hasn't managed to replicate the heroics of its earlier device: the N8 shows its advantage in consistently picking out better color balance and in also being sharper throughout the frame. It makes the N9's images appear as if they were shot through a haze, though we hasten to add that this should be considered a strength of the older phone rather than a major failure of the new one. Additionally, the N9 suffers from the typically narrow dynamic range of smartphone camera sensors, which is the cause of the consistently blown-out sky in our gallery images. Still, considering the quick software operation and consistently detailed imagery on offer from the N9, we'd say Nokia is on to a winner here.<br />

Boeing's new <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/14/boeings-unmanned-phantom-ray-makes-dramatic-video-debut-set-to/">Phantom Ray</a> aircraft made a covert first flight last week, taking to the skies above California's Edwards Air Force Base. The unmanned airborne system (UAS) reached 7,500 feet, hitting a maximum speed of 178 knots and flying for a total of 17 minutes -- sure, it won't outlast the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/13/boeing-phantom-eye-unmanned-spy-plane-stays-aloft-four-days-sor/">Phantom Eye</a> anytime soon, but hey, we've all gotta start somewhere. What the 36-foot long vehicle lacks in <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/29/zephyr-solar-powered-uav-breaks-three-more-world-records/">relative endurance</a>, it makes up stealth, designed to be undetectable on radar, and thanks to a deeply embedded engine, giving off a minimal amount of heat. Boeing will be running additional tests on the autonomous vehicle in the coming weeks, in attempt to prep it for possible future surveillance and attack missions. No word on when this might actually be hitting an airspace near you, but in the meantime, it's probably best to refrain from ticking off any deep pocketed governments.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/03/boeings-phantom-ray-soars-like-a-terrifying-unmanned-eagle/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Boeing's Phantom Ray soars like a terrifying, unmanned eagle</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/03/boeings-phantom-ray-soars-like-a-terrifying-unmanned-eagle/">Boeing's Phantom Ray soars like a terrifying, unmanned eagle</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 03 May 2011 21:46:00 EST. It's time for us to welcome yet another contender in the battle for world's slimmest Android phone: the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/05/lg-announces-optimus-black-with-nova-display/">LG Optimus Black</a>. This <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/06/lg-optimus-black-hands-on/">9.2mm-thick</a> handset made its debut to oohs and aahs of admiration at CES earlier in the year, and is now on the very precipice of a global release. Admittedly, it's not quite slender enough to knock the 7.7mm-thick <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/24/necs-razor-thin-medias-n-04c-android-launched-in-japan-gets-ca/">NEC MEDIAS N-04C</a> off its perch as the absolute thinnest, but it <em>is</em> sufficiently slender to give Samsung's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/28/samsung-galaxy-s-ii-review/">Galaxy S II</a> and Sony Ericsson's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/30/sony-ericsson-xperia-arc-review/">Xperia Arc</a> a good fright. That pair of smartphones offer thinner proportions on the spec sheet, but when rested on a flat surface they sit ever so slightly <em>higher</em> than the Optimus Black. This is because, unlike its tricky contemporaries, the Optimus Black keeps to the same thickness along its full length (don't laugh), which, technically speaking, makes it the thinnest Android handset on the European market. We got to feeling a bit curious about how exactly HTC's latest Android superphone, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/12/htc-sensation-first-video-hands-on/">Sensation 4G</a>, stacks up against its fellow dual-core competition, so we did what every geek does in such situations, we compiled a chart. Included in this list are the finest and brightest Android handsets from each of the major manufacturers that have gone dual-core so far: the Galaxy S II, the Atrix 4G, the Optimus 2X / G2X, and HTC's own EVO 3D. As it turns out, there are quite a few commonalities among these phones (besides the benchmark-crushing performance). They all boast screens of either 4 or 4.3 inches in size, the minimum amount of RAM among them is 512MB, the smallest battery is 1500mAh, and yes, they all have front-facing video cameras. Basically, it's the future of smartphones, reduced to a stat sheet. As such, it must also come with the warning that specs aren't everything, and user experience will most often depend on the software available on each device and on the preferences of the human holding it. With that proviso fully digested, join us after the break for the data.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/15/htc-sensation-versus-the-rest-of-the-dual-core-world-smartphone/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>HTC Sensation versus the rest of the dual-core world: smartphone spec sheet smackdown</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/15/htc-sensation-versus-the-rest-of-the-dual-core-world-smartphone/">HTC Sensation versus the rest of the dual-core world: smartphone spec sheet smackdown</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 15 Apr 2011 09:10:00 EST. We just so happened to have our review units of HTC's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/21/htc-incredible-s-review/">Incredible S</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/10/htc-desire-s-review/">Desire S</a> on hand during today's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/12/htc-sensation-first-video-hands-on/">Sensation</a> launch <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/12/live-from-htcs-april-12th-event/">event</a>, so what else to do with them than to throw them in with the new 4.3-incher and shoot some photos? The gallery below should give you a pretty good idea of the physical differences between HTC's trio of foremost Android devices for the European market. You won't be able to tell much about the difference a dual-core processor makes, but then what's life without a little mystery? <br />

Of all the battlefields we've witnessed in the browser wars, this one's never really crossed our minds before: energy efficiency. Yes, the power efficiency of a piece of software, not hardware, is being touted by Microsoft as a differentiating feature for its fresh new <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/14/internet-explorer-9-launches-tonight-weve-got-your-early-look/">Internet Explorer 9</a>. It's thrown together the top five most popular browsers and put them through a cycle of benchmarks -- including Microsoft's own <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/25/html5-speed-test-finds-ie9-firefox-3-7-lead-the-pack-in-windows/">FishIE Tank</a> graphics acceleration test, but not the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/11/adobe-expects-flash-on-250-million-smartphones-by-end-of-2012/"><em>somewhat</em> popular</a> Adobe Flash -- while measuring how much power they use beyond what the underlying Windows 7 system needs to keep itself going. Shockingly, IE9 was the winner each and every time and there's a tenuous conclusion drawn that if you want good battery life, you'll be going with Internet Explorer. Oh well, whether you consider them a good laugh or really valuable buyer's advice, there's plenty more of these power consumption comparisons at the source link below.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/29/ie9-is-the-most-energy-efficient-modern-browser-according-to-mi/">IE9 is the most energy-efficient modern browser, according to Microsoft's own testing</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 29 Mar 2011 19:38:00 EST. By now you've seen Apple's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/02/ipad-2-gets-a-smart-cover/">Smart Cover</a>, right? The mind blowing cover (don't call it a case) pretty much stole the show during yesterday's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/02/the-ipad-2/">iPad 2</a> press event, causing children to weep at the sight of our exploded bodies. Thing is, we've seen the design before. Oh sure, Apple improved upon it significantly, but there's no mistaking its InCase Convertible Magazine Jacket heritage. See the two slug it out on video after the break in some kind of weird reverse KIRF cage match. We guess 2011 really is the <a href="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/03/20110302-10175350--img4510.jpg">year of the copycats</a>.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/03/apple-ipad-2-smart-cover-vs-incase-convertible-magazine-jacket/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Apple iPad 2 Smart Cover vs. InCase Convertible Magazine Jacket... Alright, so the screen resolution didn't improve and we didn't get that ultra-speedy Thunderbolt connector on board, but the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/02/the-ipad-2/">iPad 2</a> is thinner and lighter while somehow becoming more powerful -- a 1GHz dual-core Apple A5 SOC lurks within. Check out our full breakdown of the key spec differences in the chart after the break. It's great fun, we promise!<br /><br />P.S. - While you're poring over these stats, don't forget that Apple's decided to slap a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/02/apple-puts-original-ipads-on-sale-now-start-at-399/">$100 price cut</a> on the original iPads, making them eminently more desirable today than they were yesterday.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/02/ipad-2-vs-original-ipad-whats-changed/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>iPad 2 vs. original iPad: what's changed?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/02/ipad-2-vs-original-ipad-whats-changed/">iPad 2 vs. original iPad: what's changed?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 02 Mar 2011 14:25:00 EST. So far, AMD's new <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/17/hp-pavilion-dm1z-with-amd-fusion-review/">Fusion</a> chips have been all about the low-end, whether you're talking in terms of price, performance or <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/31/amd-has-a-5w-fusion-apu-to-put-in-your-future-tablet-of-choice/">power consumption</a>, but the company has a vision for its future that has these new Accelerated Processing Units dominating every segment of the market. In order to do that, AMD will need to overcome Intel's latest generation of mainstream processors, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/03/intels-2nd-generation-core-processor-family-announced-includes/">Core 2011 family</a> we're more familiar with under the Sandy Bridge codename. Before you rush past the break and watch AMD's own comparison between said Intel hardware and the forthcoming quad-core Llano APU, be aware that processor performance can rarely be generalized from a single test alone and the one we're witnessing is specifically geared to highlight the Fusion chip's strengths. All that said, the workload demonstrated by AMD -- a 3D game, HD video playback (<em>plus</em> post-processing on the Llano rig), Excel calculations, and some 3D modeling, all running simultaneously -- is handled most impressively by the A8-3510MX APU, which even manages to use less power than Intel's 2GHz Core i7-2630QM. See the video after the break.<br />

Hello, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/06/motorola-xoom-first-hands-on/">Moto</a> -- no wait, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/13/samsung-galaxy-tab-10-1-official-tegra-2-honeycomb-dual-camer/">Samsung</a>... or is it <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/14/lg-optimus-pad-first-hands-on/">LG</a>? Three of the world's biggest smartphone makers have leapt at the opportunity to serve up Google's brand new <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/02/android-honeycomb-motorola-xoom-hands-ons-widgets-grocery-iq/">Honeycomb</a> build of Android, however their selection of menu items looks to be somewhat lacking in diversity. Motorola's Xoom matches Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1 in both screen size and resolution (1280 x 800), while LG's Optimus Pad / G-Slate offers only marginally smaller measurements with an 8.9-inch display spanning 1280 x 768. More than that, all three tablets run the bone-stock Honeycomb UI and are built around NVIDIA's 1GHz Tegra 2 system-on-chip, leaving little room for differentiation on the basis of user experience or internal performance (LG would have you believe its 3D camcorder is a big advantage for its slate, but we're not so sure). Most choices between the three, then, will come to things like brand loyalty, ergonomics and pure, basic aesthetic appeal. To help you judge the latter of those three points, we've prepared an exhaustive barrage of side-by-side photos below -- we expect you to view every last one of 'em... at least twice.<br />

In a world of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/13/samsung-galaxy-tab-10-1-official-tegra-2-honeycomb-dual-camer/">10-inch dual-core Androids</a>, HTC has opted to tread its own path by <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/15/htc-launches-into-tablet-wars-with-1-5ghz-7-inch-flyer/">cranking up</a> processor speeds, sticking to a 7-inch form factor and eschewing the latest Honeycomb build for a Gingerbread version it could <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/15/a-closer-look-at-the-htc-flyers-screen-and-stylus-aka-htc-scri/">customize</a> more comprehensively with Sense. All that's well and good, but sometimes all it comes down to is how these gadgets look and feel. So to help you wrap your mind around the Flyer's new aluminum body, we present a couple of comparison galleries with it set against two devices that need no introduction. Get clicking!<br />

Spec sheets are one thing, but we know what you really want to see -- two tablets going mano-a-mano in the ring. Here they are, your <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/iPad/">Apple iPad</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/TouchPad/">HP TouchPad</a> slates, sized up side-by-side each with their own sizable black bezel and 9.7-inch screen -- and incredibly similar in both size and weight. See how they literally stack up in the gallery below!<br />

Android is our future, the stat mavens <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/31/canalys-android-overtakes-symbian-as-worlds-best-selling-smart/">all agree</a>, but for all its rapid growth, Google's OS still suffers from a shortage of top tier differentiation. This has in part been down to LG and Sony -- two of the world's biggest phone makers -- spending the majority of 2010 watching the battle for Android supremacy from the sidelines (the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/22/sony-ericsson-xperia-x10-review/">X10</a> disqualified itself when it <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/06/sony-ericsson-no-os-updates-for-xperia-x10-beyond-android-2-1/">announced</a> it neither knew nor cared what Froyo was). 2011 might just be the year of redemption for both, however, as LG will soon assault the European market with a pair of truly desirable and powerful Android smartphones in the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/lg-star/preview/">Optimus 2X</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/07/lg-optimus-black-shows-off-its-wifi-direct-skills-on-video-hand/">Black</a>, while Sony Ericsson's well leaked portfolio of new Xperias includes the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/05/sony-ericsson-xperia-arc-first-hands-on/">Arc</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/04/sony-ericsson-xperia-neo-named-and-previewed-in-one-fell-swoop/">Neo</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/26/sony-ericsson-xperia-play-playstation-phone-preview/">Play</a>, each one of them coming with Gingerbread preloaded. We've wrapped our mitts around a pair of these high-hope devices, one from each manufacturer, and photographed the living daylights out of them sat side by side.<br />

We humbly submit that the Xperia Arc looks and feels far more refined than LG's admittedly well designed Optimus 2X. The Arc's curvature seriously makes it feel like the thinnest phone we've ever handled and its weight is also dramatically, unreasonably minimal. Another note of import is that the 2X comes with a 4-inch screen whereas the Arc offers a more generous 4.2-inch display, yet their overall dimensions are nearly identical. All in all, we'd hardly object to having either one in our pockets, but the Arc wins it for us in terms of aesthetic appeal. Of course, the Optimus 2X has a dual-core Tegra 2 heart beating within, it's not all about looks, though in the case of this hands-on comparison, it kind of was. We'll have a full review of LG's handset in the coming days, while Sony Ericsson promises the Xperia Arc will land in Europe by the end of March. You can see more of the prototype unit we got to handle in the gallery below and there's a video comparison of the two Android newcomers after the break as well.<br />

Sony Ericsson isn't being shy about hyping the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/05/sony-ericsson-xperia-arc-first-hands-on/">Xperia Arc</a>'s new Reality Display, so we naturally had to take a head-to-head shot with the iPhone 4's Retina Display. They actually compare quite well in person, even though the Arc actually has the same 854 x 480 resolution as the Droid X -- you can definitely see some pixels up close, but since the panel is a hair smaller than the X at 4.2 inches, the pixel density is a little tighter. The real noise behind the Reality Display is Arc's Bravia Engine, which Sony claims will enhance colors and detail just like on Bravia TVs, but we didn't get to play with it too much beyond finding the option in settings to turn it off. We'll obviously be diving deep on that once we score a review unit, but for now check a macro shot and a Droid X comparison after the break.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/06/sony-ericsson-xperia-arc-reality-display-vs-retina-display-f/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc Reality Display vs. Retina Display... fight!</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/06/sony-ericsson-xperia-arc-reality-display-vs-retina-display-f/">Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc Reality Display vs. Retina Display... fight!</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 06 Jan 2011 00:31:00 EST. Two portable speakers clamber into the ring, each boasting big, beautiful sound for their diminutive size. Both cost $200. Both <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/04/jawbone-intros-jambox-portable-bluetooth-speaker-we-go-hands-on/">have the same technology</a> inside. The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/04/jawbone-intros-jambox-portable-bluetooth-speaker-we-go-hands-on/">Jawbone Jambox</a> and the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/12/01/soundmatters-foxl-v2-portable-bluetooth-speaker-rocks-the-subur/">Soundmatters foxL v2 with Bluetooth</a> each want to be your wireless audio wunderkind, blasting music and taking Bluetooth calls. At best, you're only going to buy one. Which speaker should you choose? Following our <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/03/jawbone-jambox-review/">Jambox review</a>, we got our hands on a foxL and put the two head to head, and after the break you'll see which one came out on top -- both literally and figuratively. <br />

If yesterday's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/04/panasonic-lumix-gf2-preview/">preview</a> of the GF2 wasn't enough for you, here's a little more eye candy to feast upon. We paired up Panasonic's all-new Micro Four Thirds shooter with the GF1 that preceded it and collected a nice little gallery for your perusal below. The major difference between the two is in their dimensions -- the GF2 feels a lot closer to your typical compact camera -- though there are plenty of smaller modifications as well, such as the refashioned grip on the camera's right side, the replacement of the jog dial up top with a stereo mic array, and the introduction of a luminous iA button for switching on the intelligent auto mode. The back of the GF2 is also quite a bit tidier, which has been achieved mostly by eliminating some buttons in favor of the touchscreen interface. Check it all out below or jump past the break for some video action.<br />

Two 3.5-inch displays at 960 x 640 resolution, both equipped with fancy wide viewing angle technologies. Does the <a href="http://mobile.engadget.com/tag/is03">Sharp IS03's</a> ASV get the nod over the <a href="http://mobile.engadget.com/tag/iphone4">iPhone 4's</a> famously good IPS? After peeping them side by side, we're not sure any mere mortal could call it -- both look bright and ridiculously crisp from every conceivable vantage point and have roughly the same amount of gloss, though the IS03 has the advantage of a second always-on monochrome LCD strip. Regardless, we're just happy to see that we've got at least two suppliers of excellent 960 x 640 mobile displays in the industry now -- let's just hope they can keep up with demand.<br />

What's the first thing you should do when you <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/30/nokia-n8-first-unboxing/">get</a> the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/30/nokia-n8-shipments-begin/">N8</a>? Considering it packs the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/14/nokia-n8-preview/">biggest image sensor</a> embedded in a phone yet, Carl Zeiss optics, and an eight-digit pixel count, it seemed obvious to us that the answer was to take it on a picture- and video-taking stroll around London. On our way out we saw our iPhone 4 looking all sad and lonely, so we went ahead and brought it along as well. Below you shall find one gallery of pure, unadulterated N8 sample shots, another interspersed with the iPhone's results for comparison's sake, and a final one with side-by-side 100 percent crops from each image taker. Once you've digested all of those, we suggest hopping past the break and tucking into some tasty video comparisons for dessert.<br />
<br />
Naturally, all the images are entirely unretouched (but for our masterly watermarking) and the iPhone 4's HDR hocus pocus has been left off. We've also provided a zip file containing all the full-res imagery shot with the N8 in a link below.<br />
<br />
A quick note is also merited about the N8's resolution. The sensor's display ratio is 4:3, which means that full 12 megapixel shots are only available in those dimensions. The camera software, however, defaults to shooting 9 megapixel snaps at the increasingly popular 16:9 ratio -- this is done simply by cropping away the "excess" bars at the top and bottom of the image, meaning that the 9 megapixel images are giving us identical performance as the 12 megapixel ones, they're just chopped down (from 4000 x 3000 to 4000 x 2248) for the sake of convenience. Now, on with the show!<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nokia-n8-sample-photos/">Nokia N8 sample photos</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nokia-n8-sample-photos/#3421542"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/xn810x093080028_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nokia-n8-sample-photos/#3421540"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/xn810x093080026_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nokia-n8-sample-photos/#3421535"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/xn810x093080021_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nokia-n8-sample-photos/#3421523"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/xn810x093080011_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nokia-n8-sample-photos/#3421514"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/xn810x093080002_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nokia-n8-vs-iphone-4-cameraphone-fight/">Nokia N8 vs. iPhone 4: cameraphone fight!</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nokia-n8-vs-iphone-4-cameraphone-fight/#3421863"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/engxv90929_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nokia-n8-vs-iphone-4-cameraphone-fight/#3421939"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/ivz4x093080029_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nokia-n8-vs-iphone-4-cameraphone-fight/#3421834"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/engxv90905_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nokia-n8-vs-iphone-4-cameraphone-fight/#3421903"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/ivz4x093080005_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nokia-n8-vs-iphone-4-cameraphone-fight/#3421881"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/engxv90944_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nokia-n8-vs-iphone-4-full-resolution-crops/">Nokia N8 vs. iPhone 4: full resolution crops</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nokia-n8-vs-iphone-4-full-resolution-crops/#3422347"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/10x09309ub77niar43r2gsct_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nokia-n8-vs-iphone-4-full-resolution-crops/#3422361"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/10x09309ub234r23nokiar43r9sct_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nokia-n8-vs-iphone-4-full-resolution-crops/#3422358"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/10x09309ub234r23nokiar43r7sct_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nokia-n8-vs-iphone-4-full-resolution-crops/#3422359"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/10x09309ub234r23nokiar43r8sct_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nokia-n8-vs-iphone-4-full-resolution-crops/#3422348"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/10x09309ub77nokiar43r2gsct_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/30/nokia-n8-vs-iphone-4-camera-showdown/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Nokia N8 vs. iPhone 4: camera showdown</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/30/nokia-n8-vs-iphone-4-camera-showdown/">Nokia N8 vs. iPhone 4: camera showdown</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 30 Sep 2010 23:57:00 EST. <div style="text-align: left;">Two tiny black 720p boxes, two interesting choices. The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/22/roku-launches-revamped-hd-xd-and-xds-players-starting-at-just/">$59 Roku HD</a> will put Netflix, Amazon Video on Demand and Roku's 75 other content channels on your TV quickly and easily, while the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/01/apple-announcing-new-apple-tv/">$99 Apple TV</a> offers up iTunes rentals, Netflix, and eventually AirPlay streaming from your iPad or iPhone. (You could step up to the Roku XDS with 1080p support for $99, but we don't think the extra money will be really worth it until the USB playback channel is released and / or there's more useful 1080p content available.) It's a tough decision, so check out our <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/29/apple-tv-review-2010/">Apple TV review</a>, our <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/22/roku-xds-review/">Roku XDS review</a>, and our <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/01/appletv-vs-the-competition-how-does-it-stack-up/">in-depth comparison chart</a> to just try to make up your mind. Then again, you could grab 'em both and still not break the bank. <br />

Okay, we've got a long way to go before we can do a fair, apples-to-berries comparison between these two titans of industry, but consider this your first sneak preview of the deathmatch to come. As we mentioned in the previous post, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/PlayBook/">PlayBook</a> is hopelessly locked away in insanely thick Plexiglas -- and the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/iPad/">iPad</a> is unactivated, though that doesn't much matter for getting a sense of the size comparison between 'em. Needless to say, the PlayBook looks way easier to lug around... but we just won't know by how much until we've got one resting in our sweaty, eager palms. Hit up the gallery!<br />

Come on, you knew this post was coming. Here we have a prototype Nokia E7 and its new 4-inch, 640x360 pixel Clear Black Display pitted again the iPhone 4's 3.5-inch 960x640 pixel Retina display. To our eyes, the iPhone 4 display has a noticeable blue warmth and wasn't as vibrant or bright as the CBD. The CBD, however, did come across a bit oversatured (just look at those red "breaking news" bars), but hey, it's AMOLED. It certainly looks just as good as the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/26/iphone-4-vs-galaxy-s-part-deux-hd-video-playback-video/">Galaxy S' Super AMOLED</a>. We'll have to see how the polarized layer on the CBD affects sunlight viewing. More on that later. Until then, play nice dear readers.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nokia-cbd-vs-apple-retina-fight/">Nokia CBD vs. Apple Retina... fight!</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nokia-cbd-vs-apple-retina-fight/#3359119"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/nokia-e7-display-01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nokia-cbd-vs-apple-retina-fight/#3359120"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/nokia-e7-display-02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nokia-cbd-vs-apple-retina-fight/#3359122"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/nokia-e7-nw2010-dsc5014--engadget-1284463234_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nokia-cbd-vs-apple-retina-fight/#3359123"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/nokia-e7-nw2010-dsc5011--engadget-1284463236_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nokia-cbd-vs-apple-retina-fight/#3359124"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/nokia-e7-nw2010-dsc5006--engadget-1284463237_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/14/nokia-cbd-vs-apple-retina-fight/">Nokia CBD vs. Apple Retina... display fight!</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 14 Sep 2010 07:27:00 EST. Three new iPods under one roof -- how could we not throw them on a table and see how they size up against one another? Obviously, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/01/ipod-touch-2010-first-hands-on/">iPod touch</a> is the black sheep here in terms of sheer physical space, but the width / height difference between the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/01/ipod-nano-first-hands-on/">nano</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/01/ipod-shuffle-first-hands-on/">shuffle</a> is as marginal as you probably guessed. The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/PlayStationMove/">PlayStation Move</a>. It's funny to think just 15 months have passed since Sony <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/02/sony-announces-new-ps3-motion-controller/">first unveiled</a> its motion controller, and now we're mere weeks away from hitting the retail market. To be sure, it's not like the company didn't have waggle on the mind already -- <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/12/07/sony-patents-its-own-version-of-the-wiimote-and-sensor-bar/">patents</a> dating as far back as 2005 reveal as much, and of course the incredible success of Nintendo's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Wii/">Wii</a> proved there's a market for more physically exerting gameplay. And it's not just PlayStation; Microsoft's got its controller-free <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Kinect/">Kinect</a> motion camera system coming this November. So, in the year where all major game consoles now ask you to get off the couch and earn arm muscle, how does Move fare? We know who <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/08/asus-ares-cries-havoc-lets-slip-the-gpus-of-war-a-review-round/">the daddy</a> is when it comes to single-card graphics performance, and we've even witnessed NVIDIA and ATI <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/20/nvidia-geforce-gtx-480-set-up-in-3-way-sli-tested-against-radeo/">duking it out with multiple cards</a> before, but this here roundup is what you might call <em>comprehensive</em>. Comparing a mind-boggling 23 different configurations, the <em>Tech Report</em> guys set out to determine the best bang for your DirectX 11 buck. Their conclusion won't shock those of you who've been following the recent love affair <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/12/nvidia-geforce-gtx-460-becomes-everyones-favorite-midrange-grap/">between reviewers and NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 460</a>: a pair of these eminently affordable cards regularly outpaced the best single-GPU solutions out there. Slightly more intriguing, however, was the discovery that its elder siblings, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/26/nvidia-unleashes-geforce-gtx-480-and-gtx-470-tessellation-monst/">GTX 470 and 480</a>, have improved in performance to the point of being markedly ahead of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/all/radeonhd5870">ATI's Radeon HD 5870</a>, with the blame for this shift being put squarely on the shoulders of NVIDIA's driver update team. Hurry up and give the source a read while it's still fresh, we can't imagine ATI letting this be the status quo for too much longer.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/12/ati-crossfirex-versus-nvidia-sli-performance-scaling-showdown/">ATI CrossFireX versus NVIDIA SLI: performance scaling showdown</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 12 Aug 2010 09:47:00 EST. Naturally, the $1,800 Canon 7D loses out to the $50 Barbie Video Girl in the "creating unrealistic body images" category. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/17/canon-eos-7d-firmware-kills-the-magenta-phenomenon/">Preference for magenta</a>, however, was a tie.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/11/canon-7d-vs-barbie-video-girl-fight-video/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Canon 7D vs Barbie Video Girl... fight! If the title of this post isn't enough to entice you, we don't know what else to say. We've gone and run some sunlit comparisons between Apple's brand spanking new phone's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/all/retina+display">Retina Display</a> and Samsung's equally fresh and exclusive <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/21/super-amoled-vs-amoled-vs-lcd-in-direct-sunlight-fight/">Super AMOLED</a> panel on the Galaxy S. We don't know if we'll be able to settle <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/09/samsung-iphone-4s-retina-display-is-nice-but-its-no-amoled/">the argument</a>, but we're certainly going to subject both superphones to an expansive visual inspection. Follow us after the break for video exploration of this most pressing topic.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update:</strong> Due to the Galaxy S having a separate setting for browser brightness, which we didn't max out in the original investigation, we've gone back and collected some truly 100 percent illuminated pictures. See the gallery after the break. Keep in mind that this shouldn't discredit most of the work done here, as we were more interested in pixel-level detail than brightness.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4-vs-samsung-galaxy-s-display-face-off/">iPhone 4 vs. Samsung Galaxy S display face-off</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4-vs-samsung-galaxy-s-display-face-off/#3115588"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/10x0624oiub134213sa_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4-vs-samsung-galaxy-s-display-face-off/#3115591"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/10x0624ou21b34231comp_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4-vs-samsung-galaxy-s-display-face-off/#3115593"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/10x0624ouib12412dda77_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4-vs-samsung-galaxy-s-display-face-off/#3115595"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/10x0624uo1231sdgax_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4-vs-samsung-galaxy-s-display-face-off/#3115596"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/10x0624noiret54x671_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/24/iphone-4-retina-display-vs-galaxy-s-super-amoled-fight/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>iPhone 4 Retina Display vs. Galaxy S Super AMOLED... fight! <div style="text-align: left;">By now you know that (one of) AMOLED's Achilles' heel is readability in <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/16/samsung-wave-shows-whats-super-about-its-amoled-display-by-goin/">direct sunlight</a>. But Samsung's been <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/09/samsung-super-amoled-explained-in-pretty-moving-pictures-video/">working hard</a> to fix that with its new Super AMOLED technology. <em>Techblog</em> took the display to task by pitting the Samsung Galaxy S (4-inch, 480 x 800 pixel Super AMOLED) against the HTC Desire (3.7-inch 480 x 800 pixel AMOLED) and Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 (4-inch, 480 x 854 pixel TFT LCD). It's clear from the video embedded after the break that the LCD still has the edge in the harsh Greek sun, but the Super AMOLED certainly makes a much stronger showing than its AMOLED sib. In fact, differences in visibility between the LCD and Super AMOLED are often indistinguishable, like the picture above. That'll be good news for us just as soon as Samsung can <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/20/samsungs-amoled-division-is-now-profitable-expects-major-smart/">start meeting demand</a>... regardless of what <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/09/samsung-iphone-4s-retina-display-is-nice-but-its-no-amoled/">Stevie J has to say</a>. Check the video after the break and be sure to click the source for some more side-by-side pics, including a few taken indoors where that Super AMOLED display really shines.</div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/21/super-amoled-vs-amoled-vs-lcd-in-direct-sunlight-fight/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Super AMOLED vs AMOLED vs LCD in direct sunlight... fight! If you put your ear up to the screen, you can hear these two beasts snarling at one another. Hit up the gallery for more shots, along with some iPhone 3G for good measure. Let's see how they stack up on the big stats, shall we?<br />

Not enough for you? We'll have a big comparison of all the "majors" for you shortly.<br />
<br />
Now, there's a lot left to learn about Apple's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/07/facetime-video-calling-added-to-iphone-4/">FaceTime</a> video chat service. For instance, they called it "open," but they also only mentioned a zero-configuration iPhone 4 to iPhone 4 calling setup. Meanwhile <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/04/qik-details-its-premium-service-tier-free-until-july-15/">Qik</a> can make calls between EVO 4Gs, but also stream video live to the web (while the iPhone needs to record and then upload to get "social" using its official apps). No mention was made of the FaceTime call resolution, but given the fact that the front camera is merely VGA, it's probably streaming at the same 640 x 480 that Qik is constrained to in the free service. However, a premium version of Qik for $5 a month lets you go beyond that resolution, using the EVO's higher resolution cameras. Perhaps the largest distinction is the fact that the EVO can stream video calls over 3G or 4G, while the iPhone 4 is constrained to WiFi for the time being. Naturally, we expect other video calling apps (Skype, please?) to crop up on both platforms and give these initial offerings a run for their money. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4-vs-evo-4g-fight/">iPhone 4 vs. EVO 4G... fight!</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4-vs-evo-4g-fight/#3053503"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/iphone-4-3g-evo-fight-2010-06-0712-08-17-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4-vs-evo-4g-fight/#3053504"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/iphone-4-3g-evo-fight-2010-06-0712-08-23-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4-vs-evo-4g-fight/#3053505"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/iphone-4-3g-evo-fight-2010-06-0712-08-38-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4-vs-evo-4g-fight/#3053506"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/iphone-4-3g-evo-fight-2010-06-0712-08-51-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4-vs-evo-4g-fight/#3053507"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/iphone-4-3g-evo-fight-2010-06-0712-08-52-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/07/iphone-4-vs-evo-4g-fight/">iPhone 4 vs. EVO 4G... fight!</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 07 Jun 2010 16:07:00 EST. <div style="text-align: left;">Physicists are currently hotly debating a topic some of us never think about -- or if we did -- surely we'd think 'there's an answer for that, even if I don't know what it is.' The question? The question at hand is 'how heavy is a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/kilogram/">kilogram</a>?' The currently accepted answer is the mass of a cylinder of platinum and iridium called the International Prototype Kilogram. The problem with that definition, of course, is that not just anybody can measure it -- since most of us don't have an International Prototype Kilogram laying around, especially since every time the thing is picked up a few atoms rub off of it making it a little bit lighter. Because of this, the actual International Prototype Kilogram (yes, there does only seem to be one in existence) is stored in a vault in Sevres, France, limiting the lay person's ability to determine the actual weight of a kilogram. There are other options on the table, of course, including one involving a two-stories high piece of equipment that costs around $1.5 million -- which isn't much better, when you think of it. Enter Ronald Fox and friends over at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. They're suggesting a rather shocking solution: make the kilogram equal to the mass of a certain number of carbon-12 atoms (2250&times; 28148963^3 of them), also known as a cube of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/carbon/">carbon</a> measuring 8.11 centimeters on each side. This would mean, of course, that pretty much anybody could determine the weight of a kilogram at home. But we wouldn't want that, now, would we?</div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/06/physicist-fight-how-heavy-is-a-kilogram/">Physicist fight: how heavy is a kilogram?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sun, 06 Jun 2010 19:59:00 EST. The big new trend among wargadget makers seems to be the elimination of the fleshy operator, and we're seeing it happening with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/28/the-future-of-us-army-helicopters-pilots-optional/">helicopters</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/08/11/harbor-wing-ausv-can-sail-into-the-sunset-all-by-itself/">boats</a>, and even <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/23/boeing-x-37b-autonomous-space-shuttle-launched-last-night-due-b/">space shuttles</a>. The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/10/boeing-developing-phantom-ray-fighter-sized-combat-uav/">Phantom Ray</a> is Boeing's take on how we can do <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/uav">the same</a> to jet fighters, and it's had its official unveiling in St. Louis this week. Primarily intended to serve as a reconnaissance and intelligence drone, this 36 foot-long airborne robot will be able to cruise at speeds of up to 614mph, and will even do a bit of suppression fire when you need it to. It's designed to be undetectable by radar and offers a minimal heat signature for missiles to lock on to, as its engine is buried deep within the body. Sounds ominous indeed, but the Phantom Ray will serve as the testbed for even more advanced technologies and will take its first flight in December of this year. See its grand debut on video after the break.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/14/boeings-unmanned-phantom-ray-makes-dramatic-video-debut-set-to/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Boeing's unmanned Phantom Ray makes dramatic video debut, set to take off this December</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/14/boeings-unmanned-phantom-ray-makes-dramatic-video-debut-set-to/">Boeing's unmanned Phantom Ray makes dramatic video debut, set to take off this December</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 14 May 2010 03:51:00 EST. Occasionally we've had strangers -- very likely non-Engadget readers -- coming up to us and ask, "Sorry mate, but is that the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/ipad">iPad</a>?" To which we reply, "No, it's the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/dell+mini+5">Dell Mini 5</a>." This may sound like a silly boo-boo to make, but there <em>is</em> this common misconception of the iPad being just "a bigger iPhone" while not knowing <em>how much bigger</em> it is (despite our <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/27/ipad-vs-iphone-fight/">best effort</a>). To clear this up once and for all, we've brought the two devices in question together -- the Mini 5 / Streak smartphone on the left, and the iPad on the right. Now it's up to you guys to spread the love.<br />
<br />
As a bonus, we also threw in various phones -- <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/htc+hd+mini">HTC HD mini</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/nexus+one">Nexus One</a>, Sony Ericsson <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/xperia+x10">Xperia X10</a>, and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/htc+hd2">HTC HD2</a> -- to pile on top of Apple's latest toy, just to kill the Sunday afternoon. No magical and revolutionary devices were harmed in the making of this article.<br />

Sure, they might be worlds apart in quality, usefulness, and desirability, but even still, comparisons are inevitable. The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/iPad/">iPad</a> (right) and the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/JooJoo/">JooJoo</a> (left) hit the hands of consumers on the same weekend, offer large-screen browsing experiences controlled entirely by a capacitive touchscreen, and... well, you get the idea. So, how do the two devices stack up externally? It's a pretty fair fight, hardware-wise. The JooJoo is thicker and heavier, but also scores a good amount more screen space -- its 16:9 ratio almost turns it into an extruded lengthwise version of the 4:3 iPad. Unfortunately, that screen is a real let down when viewed off axis, and isn't nearly as responsive or accurate as the iPad's in use. Both of the devices offer scratch resistant glass fronts and brushed aluminum backs, though there's a bit of give to JooJoo's materials that smacks of slightly lower quality. You can <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/03/apple-ipad-review/">read</a> the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/05/fusion-garage-joojoo-review/">reviews</a> to get an idea of how dramatically different these two devices are in actual use, but if you want to satisfy a baser lust for straight-on comparison shots, hit up the gallery below. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/ipad-vs-joojoo-fight/">iPad vs. JooJoo... fight!</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/ipad-vs-joojoo-fight/#2868829"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/04/ipadvsjoojoo-01-hands_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/ipad-vs-joojoo-fight/#2868828"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/04/ipadvsjoojoo-02-hands_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/ipad-vs-joojoo-fight/#2868827"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/04/ipadvsjoojoo-03-hands_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/ipad-vs-joojoo-fight/#2868826"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/04/ipadvsjoojoo-04-hands_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/ipad-vs-joojoo-fight/#2868825"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/04/ipadvsjoojoo-05-hands_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/06/ipad-vs-joojoo-fight/">iPad vs. JooJoo... fight!</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 06 Apr 2010 15:22:00 EST.
