Final Fantasy Explorers will not use the 3DS' stereoscopic 3D functions, Siliconera reported. The game will make use of the new 3DS and 3DS XL's buttons and C-stick, however, controlling the third-person game's targeting and lock-on mechanics. It will also be compatible with the Circle Pad Pro, unlike a certain popular Nintendo-published fighting game that launched recently. Square Enix isn't the first publisher to dismiss the handheld system's 3D capabilities to some degree; Nintendo's own Pokemon X and Y limited their use of the stereoscopic 3D visuals to the game's battles. The console manufacturer even launched an entire version of the system without the 3D functions roughly one year ago, the Nintendo 2DS. Final Fantasy Explorers will launch on December 18 in Japan. While both US and European trademarks exist for the game, it hasn't yet been given a release date elsewhere. [Image: Square Enix]

If you live in Japan you can grab your backpacks and lead the way in upcoming 3DS co-op RPG Final Fantasy Explorers. Vámonos indeed because as Jump revealed (via Gematsu), it's only a few months before the game hits retail shelves there on December 18. Continuing the Crystal Chronicles vibe, Final Fantasy Explorers lets up to four adventurers combine forces in quest-driven action. Players take on classic series jobs like Knight, Monk; Black and White Mage; and as this week's Famitsu reveals, Paladin and Hunter. Just as familiar are the summons players do battle against, including the likes of Ifrit and Shiva. Final Fantasy Explorers remains unconfirmed for Western release, though US and Euro trademarks suggest a voyage across the oceans is on the cards. For now, make you own trek below the break to see three new vids showcasing the Monk, Knight and Black Mage.

Square Enix announced it's bringing mulitplayer 3DS RPG Final Fantasy Explorers to Japan sometime this winter. The publisher showcased the upcoming game at the start of today's Japan-only Nintendo Direct broadcast, which you can replay here. First revealed last month, Final Fantasy Explorers combines the series' tropes with four-player co-operative action. For one, the game features classic jobs, including the tank-like Knight, close-combat Monk, and more self-explanatory Black and White Mages. As today's Direct showed, adventurers have to take on monsters big and small in the game, including some familiar summons. Again, Square Enix showcased the heroes doing battle with Ifrit in what looks like his Final Fantasy X form. Final Fantasy Explorers remains unconfirmed for Western release, despite Square Enix recently trademarking its name in North America and Europe. [Image: Square Enix]

  • 'Final Fantasy Explorers' trademark filed in US, Europe

Final Fantasy Explorers might be flagging down an airship to cross oceans soon, based on trademark filings with the US Patent and Trademark Office and Europe's Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market. Both trademarks were filed by Square-Enix Holdings Co, Ltd., with registration fees presumably paid for in Gil. Explorers is a multiplayer-focused 3DS title that builds its class system from the Final Fantasy series' established job types. Knights, Monks and White and Black Mages have been confirmed as classes, but Siliconera's translation of Jump's reveal reports that other job types will be present as well. Whatever the final count may be, we'll still probably have that lengthy argument with friends over who will be stuck as the White Mage, which is an elegant name for Adult Babysitting. [Image: USPTO]

Final Fantasy Explorers will chart a course to the Nintendo 3DS, Siliconera reports. Citing this week's Jump magazine, it appears that the game will be a multiplayer RPG which uses the classic Final Fantasy Job system for its playable classes. Knights will act as the party's tank, drawing enemy fire and blocking damage with his shield, while the Monk will get in close to pummel his opponents. The Black Mage casts damaging spells from afar, while the White Mage tends to her friends' wounds. The intrepid explorers will set out to collect the world's crystals while battling Summons - AKA giant monsters from other Final Fantasy games. An image in Jump shows series mainstay Ifrit, appearing similar to - if not the same as - his form in Final Fantasy 10. This would make sense, given that Siliconera reports that monsters in the game span the Final Fantasy series' multiple generations. Final Fantasy Explorers does not have a release date at this time, nor do we know if it's even coming stateside. So for now, let's all just set up a Tent and get a nice resting bonus, ok?
