  • Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions hits iPad for $18

Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions has been available on the iPhone for about seven months at this point, and when it finally launched back in August of last year we were a bit surprised by its $15.99 price tag -- the equivalent of a hundred million dollars in App Store terms. Square Enix has never released sales information for the iPhone version, but it must have found some justification in its pricing structure as the iPad version just launched for $17.99.Now, we're not saying War of the Lions isn't worth almost 20 dollars, but for a game that isn't a Universal App, and is also available on PSN for a single sawbuck, it's kind of a tough pill to swallow.

  • Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions now on iPhone, separate iPad version 'coming later'

It missed late June. It missed late July. But today, Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions makes its triumphant debut on the iOS App Store for the low, low price of $15.99. Wait, $15.99? Sure, that may seem like a steep price for a game that's an update of a four-year-old PSP title, that was in and of itself an update of a then ten-year-old PlayStation One title, but you're not getting a straight port. The iPhone release promises "improved graphics, loading times and framerate over the PSP version" which, considering the complaints levied at the PSP release, is to be expected. Then again, the PSP version was just released on PSN for the relatively low price of $10. One thing that $15.99 price tag won't deliver, however, is a "universal" iPad release. That's just Square's way of saying that those of you interested in playing on your phone and your tablet oughta be rich enough to buy two copies. The iPad version will be "coming later," so sit tight. If you pick up that iPhone release, let us know what you think.

  • Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions hits iPhone this Thursday

While it may have missed the "July...twen..blah..blah.." release window that was promised before, Square Enix will finally bring menus and moogles to mobiles this Thursday. That's when the strategic wizards-on-a-grid simulator, Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions, lands on Apple's iPhone. It's important to note that the game will only be compatible with iPhone 4s and 3GSeses, and that iPad players will need to wait for the iPad-specific version, which should be launching around a month from Thursday. Historically, though, it's never been a good idea to count your chocobos before they've hatched.

Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions was delayed until sometime late this month on iPhone. We don't know exactly when that is, but we do know you'll be able to download the game as soon as tomorrow ... on PSP. The PlayStation Blog revealed that the PSP version of the strategy remake will be available on PSN tomorrow, July 19. It has new cutscenes, characters, and items not seen in the PSOne original. In other retro-ish PSN news, you'll also be able to download a bunch of "Mini" versions of old SNK games that were all released as part of a single UMD in Japan, as well as a PSOne Classics version of Kyuiin, a shmup starring a kid on a flying vacuum cleaner.

Listen, potential purchasers of Square Enix's iOS port of Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions -- the game's development team is going to need one more extension. You know they're good for it! According to the game's Facebook page, the team had to put a little extra TLC into the port to ensure it runs as butter-smooth as you expect. With sincere apologies, a representative announced the game's iPhone arrival is now slated for "July...twen..blah..blah," while the iPad version will come a month later. So, August...twen..blah..blah, then. The apology also came with a quick FAQ, which revealed that the game will not be compatible with iPhone 3G devices, nor will it contain any multiplayer modes. What will it contain, then? Well, Chocobo, for one thing. Also, Firaga.

The Square Enix DLG Facebook page recently delivered a long-overdue update on the status of the iOS version of Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions. It's currently slated to arrive on the iPhone in late June to mid-July. That's a little outside of its initial Spring 2011 launch window, but we're willing to give Square the benefit of the doubt, and label said time period as "very, very late Spring." The update also mentions the game's iPad version, which will arrive "slightly behind" the iPhone version. The delay is attributed to the port's higher resolution -- a feature which Square is taking full advantage of by re-drawing some of the game's jaggier artwork. We were hoping that they'd take the time to also give the game's characters some noses, but we suppose beggars can't be choosers.

  • Square Enix bringing Final Fantasy III to iPhone

Japanese manga magazine V-Jump recently outed Square Enix's plans to dominate the iPhone App Store's RPG offerings, coming in the form of two major titles set to launch this year in Japan. The first we already knew: Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions, which is (still!) due out sometime this Spring. The other is an iOS-friendly version of Final Fantasy III -- which is to say, the NES game which only just came stateside on the Nintendo DS in 2006, and not Final Fantasy VI, which came to the U.S. under the title Final Fantasy III, which will never stop being confusing. V-Jump didn't share any details on when the game would arrive, or if it would be ported stateside; though Square Enix has a pretty good track record for bringing their games to the U.S. hastily. It's unclear which version of the game we'll get, though: The original NES title? The cancelled WonderSwan version? The 3D-modeled DS version? The 2D fighting game featuring NBA superstars? Oh, wait. Scratch that. We confused Final Fantasy III with Shaq-Fu again.

In a continued push to bring awesome games we've loved forever onto the thing we use to make phone calls, Square Enix revealed during E3 that Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions would soon make its way to the iPhone. The teaser trailer posted after the jump features the opening cinematic from the PSP port of the game, meaning we won't have to suffer the occasionally spotty translations featured in the original PS1 version. Square has yet to reveal the game's price, but did confirm that it would hit the App Store on September 15.

Click for high-resolution image. Jeanne d'Arc and Disgaea aren't the only SRPGs that will take residence on the PSP. A new PSP-enhanced version of Final Fantasy Tactics, called The War of the Lions, will be available nationwide October 9th. The War of the Lions divide the land of Ivalice in two. The story is told through the eyes of two men as they're entrapped by the war: Delita Heiral and Ramza Beoulve. New to the PSP version is a new job class: the Onion Knight. In addition, the game will be enhanced with new 16:9 graphics, a brand new translation and fully voiced anime cutscenes (the Japanese version did not feature any VA). A new multiplayer function allows you to battle other players, or play cooperatively against the AI. Check out the huge media blowout we secured for you. • Final Fantasty Tactics issues addressed in US release

If you played the original PlayStation version of Final Fantasy Tactics, you're probably used to the few small technical issues of the game (especially the cheap and overpowered Orlandu Durai ... T.G. Cid, not to mention the Calculator class). The localized US version of the PSP remake address multiple issues that were left open in the now seemingly half-finished Japanese release. Slowdown has been mostly eliminated -- this plagued the Japanese version and a heck of a lot of other PSP titles as well. We know the game has been fully voiced now, but we're kind of disappointed to see the introspective text on a black background get removed. How else will we know Ramza's innermost thoughts and feelings? An issue still remaining is the so-called "flattening" of the musical score, but we can probably get over that. New features we'll at least mention are the multiplayer aspects where you can face off against a buddy or team up and explore special dungeons with set missions. These are ad-hoc only; no wireless online fun. Two new characters are made available to us: Luso from Final Fantasy Tactics Advance 2 and Balthier from Final Fantasy XII. Don't ask how. Two new classes, Dark Knight and Onion Knight, are also available. The most important change is the complete re-translation of the text. It now sounds like something straight out of Vagrant Story or Final Fantasy XII, as it should. We can't wait to play one of our favorite classics again, especially since it sounds like the experience has been fleshed out into an almost completely new game.

Remember the incredible voice acting and presentation of Final Fantasy XII? Well, it looks like PSP's upcoming Final Fantasy Tactics is getting the same high-quality treatment as its other Ivalice Alliance brethren. The voice acting is superb, and the dialogue is far away from the original, stilted PS1 translation. Bravo, Square Enix! Remember the Final Fantasy I and II boxart for America? Looked gorgeous, right? Well the Japanese boxart for Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions on the PSP had a similar reaction from fans. Well you can all rest easy, as it seems the US (and the UK, presumably, due to its simultaneous release) boxes will be sporting a very similar design. While the image used on the box is the same for both territories, certain elements such as the title of the game have changed position. You can see the final design for the US box on the right, but check out out Siliconera for a side-by-side comparison with the JP art. Does it look pretty enough for you all? [Thanks Spencer!]

This week marks the release of the Final Fantasy remake on Sony PSP, the first Square Enix title to make it to the US. The RPG powerhouse showed a multitude of appetizing titles coming to the portable earlier this summer at their massive party at Tokyo's Makuhari Messe. Long-time Square Enix fans will find yourselves either dismayed or curiously nostalgic (probably a bit of both) by the sheer number of enhanced remakes -- five of the seven PSP titles are ghosts from the company's past with upgraded visuals and new content. What's left is a brawler with an assortment of fighters from the Final Fantasy universe and a long-in-development (though visually impressive) extension of the Final Fantasy VII lore. Take a gander at the upcoming games after the break.
