Nintendo's reported its financial results for the first of half of the year, and things are still a little rocky. Net sales in the last six months have decreased 6.8 percent compared to the same point last year, while net income continues to drop, this time by 27,996 million yen. As of September 2012, Nintendo has now sold over 22 million 3DS units (three million more since last quarter), while the Wii remains just shy of the 100 million milestone, settling at 97.2 million units sold. Nintendo looks to be in a similar position to last year, with customers still waiting for the company's next big console to appear -- and the gamesmaker hoping they will. Laying blame at the strong yen, the company has dramatically cut its forecast for the rest of the year, down from 20 billion ($250 million) to 6 billion yen ($75 million), pinning its hopes on 3DS sales ahead of the Wii U's global launch later this year.

Gameloft is benefiting greatly from the age of mobile gaming, with sales up significantly in the first half of 2011. The company's controversial working conditions and ethically flexible game development appear to be producing results, with sales up 15 percent to €76.8 million ($108.8M). The publisher cited sales in emerging countries and the "massive success" of games on smartphones and tablets around the world for its prosperity. Gameloft's first-half sales on smartphones and tablets grew 55 percent year-over-year and represented 30 percent of sales; it plans to launch approximately 20 games for smartphones and tablets in the second half of the fiscal year. Gosh, we really need to crack the whip at Joystiq Publishing® China™ and get that Angry Cocker Spaniel catapult game out the door.

The financial results for the first half of Atari's fiscal year have been released. The company reported net revenue of €29.6 million ($40.5 million) for the period, a substantial decline from the €68.5 million ($93.8 million) reported during the same period last year. Revenue was "in line with expectations" however, given Atari's new focus on "fewer but more profitable games." Speaking of profit, income has improved, though Atari isn't back in the black just yet. The company posted an operating loss of €8.5 million ($11.6 million), a considerable improvement over the €19.9 million ($27.2 million) loss during the same period last year. Atari expects income for the second half of the year to be "slightly negative to break even." Highlighting the shift toward more online and downloadable games, Atari noted that online revenue including subscription fees for Star Trek Online and Champions Online totaled €12.9 million ($17.6 million), comprising 43.6 percent of its overall revenue. During the same period last year, online revenue totaled only €1.8 million ($2.4 million), or 2.6 percent of overall revenue.
