Sony touts PS3 internet browser as better than Internet Explorer
The internet browser on the PS3 got a nice facelift in firmware 2.50. The addition of Flash 9 support makes browsing on the web much more entertaining, as many sites that implement Flash video can be properly viewed on the console. Apparently, implementing Flash 9 on the PS3 was quite a challenge, as it required the use of one of PS3's SPUs.The use of additional processing power should help enhance the browsing experience, making it less sluggish than before. Sony also made changes to the way the browser implements JavaScript, with a 280% increase in performance there. The changes are so drastic that SCE's Shinji Noda believes the PS3's internet browser beats Internet Explorer 7.While this may be an achievement to the Sony firmware team, we're doubtful many use their PS3s regularly to browse the web. Regardless, we're glad these changes were made: it's so much easier to browse PS3 Fanboy on firmware 2.50.[Via IGN]
Simpel Session '08 streamed live in HD for first time
Unfortunately, the partners involved in streaming Europe's largest BMX and skateboarding event to 118,000 online onlookers in HD waited until after the event to brag about how well everything worked, but hey, at least we've got reason to believe that next year's shindig will be handled similarly. Reportedly, the three-day Simpel Session '08 was streamed live in high-definition over the web on Freecaster.tv for the "first time in the event's seven-year history." Also of note, it seems the team is now getting set to migrate all of its H.264 content to the new Flash 9 player, which should indeed allow it to "reach the widest possible audience with its state of the art action sports content." First we get the X-Games in HD, and now this -- life's pretty good for extreme sports fans, eh?
Adobe Flash Player 9 updated
Adobe has posted version 9.0.28.0 of its ubiquitous Flash Player browser plugin. The update includes many fixes and improvements, including Windows Vista support (hey - Adobe even beat the Zune to that!), support for full screen mode in web players and a security update addressing the HTTP Header Injection Vulnerabilities, as described Security Bulletin APSB06-18.A long list of other fixes are included in the Release Notes, which you really should read since Adobe went through all that trouble to type them up.There are two installers - one for Intel-based Macs (Universal Binary) and a leaner one for PPC-based Macs (requires the Mac OS X 10.1 or later). The PPC version supports Firefox, Mozilla, Netscape, AOL, Opera, and Safari browsers, while the Intel version reportedly only supports Firefox, Safari, and Opera.
