Ubisoft took the stage at the Sony press conference this afternoon to show off a new feature of Far Cry 3: Four-player co-op. Rather than take place in the game's singleplayer world, the co-op feature is an additional mode, offering a mission-based campaign, where players have to team up to accomplish certain objective-based tasks.Ubisoft also showed off a map editor for the game, and mentioned that Far Cry 3 would also have extra content exclusively on Sony's console. The game is due out later on this year.

Split-screen multiplayer used to be the norm, back before playing games on the Internet became so commonplace. But these days it's essentially a feature, and one the upcoming Starhawk is determined to do right. The game will make use of empty screen space to provide a bigger and more detailed radar map than Warhawk did.Starhawk will also let two players sign in on one PS3, which means you and your friend can both get permanent credit for rewards while in the same game. Four-player splitscreen is also supported, but Sony says it wasn't used as much as expected in Warhawk, so that will be more standard. The game is out on May 8. Meanwhile, you can browse through pictures of co-op action and a few other shots from various parts of the game below.%Gallery-151033%

  • Crimson Alliance sends you and three friends a-crawlin' again

Here's a look at some gameplay of Crimson Alliance, that Certain Affinity-developed four-player dungeon crawler that was officially announced last week. It looks like pretty standard hack-and-slash fare, with three different players (color-coded, seems like) bashing, casting, and slicing their way through dungeons of baddies, collecting the sweet, sweet loot that drops from their corpses. We would say something here about how constantly fighting wave after wave of enemies in dimly-lit dungeons eventually gets boring, but you know what? If the quality and polish are there when they need to be, it doesn't. It really doesn't.

There have been a lot of console adaptations brought to the iPhone, but sending games the other way hasn't been as common. Firemint is changing that, however -- they've announced that they'll be bringing iPhone superhit Flight Control to the PlayStation 3 as a downloadable title, and the game will even support the new Move controller, so you'll be able to draw flight paths in the air with a motion control wand (or you can use a regular dual stick controller if you'd rather do that). The game will also bring 1080p support, as well as a four-player drop-in/out mode and an exclusive map named "Metropolis." Flight Control HD will be available on the PSN on September 15th. I'd be interested to see some other iPhone-specific titles make the jump to major consoles as well -- with the onset of Kinect and Move, translating the iPhone's touch controls to the television should get a little easier. We'll likely see a few more big iPhone titles (Angry Birds? Doodle Jump?) head across from Apple's platforms to more traditional gaming outlets in the future.

We're finally approaching that point when things we got our hands on at E3 are making their way into the general populous, giving us and you, our readers, topics of conversation with which to break the awkward silence. For instance, we got to play the surprisingly thrilling four-player co-op demo from Lost Planet 2 at Capcom's E3 2009 booth. Next week -- on Wednesday, August 19 (August 26 for Silver subscribers), to be precise -- you'll be able to download and play the demo yourselves. If you're trying to get pumped up for the demo's release, check out our write-up from our brief time with the demo. Or, if you want to be surprised, then ... don't read that post, we guess. Go read something else, instead. Maybe those Twilight books. The kids seem to love those.

  • Today's most retro hack: Four-player Ocarina of Time

Take what many consider the greatest game of all time. Add multi-player support, which everyone knows makes any game better. What do you get. An even greaterest game of all time, of course, which is what this four-player Ocarina of Time hack could very well be.Okay, maybe we're overselling what is, at this point, just a video of an early, choppy test version the hack. But considering it comes from the same people that brought us the ability to play as Dark Link and fight an Arwing in Ocarina of Time, we have no doubt he'll be able to pull it off. Whether the final result turns out more like Four Swords Adventures or The Wand of Gamelon, though, is still anyone's guess.[Thanks Tanks]

  • Haze will have four-player co-op campaign

Although Ubisoft's Haze was always expected to have four-player co-op campaign, apparently it wasn't confirmed until today. Free Radical (Time Splitters) studio head David Doak confirmed at the Ubidays conference in Paris that the game will allow for the co-op campaign both online and off. Now that we're starting to see this four-player co-op concept take flight in games like Haze and Too Human, is there a chance it'll show up in Halo 3?Doak also rehashed some of the information from earlier that Haze is "not just about war itself, it's about your perception of war". They're really pushing this mature "make you think" angle of the game. Listen, we'll be more than happy to debate the merits of war with our friends online as long as the four-player co-op runs smoothly and gives us a truly great squad game in campaign mode.
