The good news is you’ll still be able to play online through peer-to-peer and private matchmaking, and you won’t lose any progression you’ve made due to the server shutdown.

You'll soon be able to don Jason Voorhees' iconic hockey mask and try to wipe out a group of campers (or flee from the masked menace) on Switch, as there's at last a release date for Friday the 13th: The Game on Nintendo's console. It emerged back in March developer Gun Media had a spring release window in mind for the Switch version, so it'll arrive a bit later than planned when it lands on August 13th.

The developers of Friday the 13th: The Game might not be able to add any more DLC to the game, but they can certainly bring the horror survival title to more platforms. Gun Media told Variety a Switch version of the game will arrive this spring, so you can try to escape Camp Crystal Lake (or hunt down young campers if you play as Jason) while you're on the go.

Longtime readers of the site know that we have a bit of a tradition around these parts. Every Friday the 13th we waste precious time where we could and should be working hiding hockey masks, bloody finger prints and the hulking figure of Jason Voorhees all around the site. What started as haphazardly pasting a mask into a photo once, has turned into a veritable art. So, we figured why not round up of some of our favorite Friday the 13th chops from the last several years. If we missed one of your personal favorites let us know in the comments.

A multi vs. solo player Friday the 13th game is in production, according to EGM. Positioned as an "asymmetrical, co-operative and competitive multiplayer predator/prey horror experience," the game is currently in development at an unnamed studio. This is not a reboot of the terrible NES game. "We have some exciting new ideas for a game that supplies plenty of replay value, while delivering the kinds of thrills and scares that fans of the franchise have come to expect," Friday the 13th creator Sean S. Cunningham tells EGM. The game's October launch will coincide with a new film and television series. The studio in charge of the game will be announced "in the coming weeks." If you thought an Evolve-style game set in the Friday the 13th universe was already in development, we're with you on the association. There's the teen horror movie survival game Until Dawn, which has been on the periphery for two years now. There's also the 5 vs. 1 survival horror game, Last Year, which was funded on Kickstarter and uses Friday the 13th iconography. [Image: Crystal Lake Entertainment]

  • Luck awaits Free Realms and Clone Wars Adventures on Friday the 13th

Traditionally, Friday the 13th bears the bad-luck brand. However, tomorrow, you have nothing to fret about if you play Free Realms or Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures because Sony Online Entertainment prepares to entertain its players with superstitious tomfoolery. If you pounce around the land of Free Realms near Champ Chatty and Camp Robbie Lake, be prepared to run into Jason Maskface. This creepy fellow wants to recruit you into scaring people by turning you into a banshee, skeleton, or other graveyard element. Additionally, each participant will receive the ability to turn into a "Scaredy" black cat. The Force is with players of CWA because all transforming holoprojectors go on sale tomorrow at 50% off. If you happen to wander around the main hall, veranda, or hanger of the Jedi Temple, don't be surprised if you or the people around you randomly turn into skeletal Clone Troopers, breaking into a dance -- it's the only way to frighten away the bad luck of Friday the 13th. • Top 5: Spooky Gaming Moments

In order to survive on these tough tubes, one usually needs to develop a biting sense of sarcasm. You know, where we make a statement and then italicize the second part of the sentence to indicate that this is where the funny is. When you work in cynicism, sentimentality and unfettered joy are difficult to host. You can't be contemptuous one moment but filled with child-like joy the next. Thus, we tend to judge the value of holidays based primarily on if it grants us a day off from work. Yet one holiday that seems to entertain even the crabbiest of bloggers is Halloween. Around the world, the lead-up to October 31st has us enjoying the orange and black decorations, scanning late-night cable for horror movies, and attempting to rationalize buying abundant amounts of candy at the counter of the drug store. Sure, we can be as bitter and weathered as we allow ourselves to be, but there's no denying the joy of carving pumpkins, piecing together a costume, and perhaps even enjoying a good scare or two. As gaming is always finding new ways to entertain us, fans of things that go bump in the night have no shortage of spooky games. Developers have been attempting to give us frights ever since the obscenely terrible Halloween for the Atari 2600. Good gameplay can survive regardless of technology, but generating a convincing scare is usually dependent on quality audio and visuals. Since top-notch technology and mature content have inconsistently been attributes of Nintendo, our favorite line of consoles is slightly lacking in good scares. But while the Silent Hills and Fatal Frames of the other guys have given us plenty of sleepless nights, Nintendo's consoles are home to a handful of underwear-changing moments. Here's the Top 5 moments that, speaking in strict technical terms, give us the heebie-jeebies. • Deaths that don't mix with Super Mario Bros.

Oh, the memories we have from our days playing Super Mario Bros. in our PJs, bellies full of sugary cereal. We can't tell you how many times we've watched Mario die, whether it be falling down an endless chasm or getting torched by a runaway fireball while penetrating the darkest corners of Bowser's castle. What would you get if Mario's death animation was swapped out for the death animation of, say, Mega Man? Or Q-Bert? Our personal favorite? The use of Friday the 13th.

Welcome to our weekly feature, Virtually Overlooked, wherein we talk about games that aren't on the Virtual Console yet, but should be. Call it a retro-speculative.Even though Halloween is over, we didn't want to miss the opportunity to devote a Virtually Overlooked column to a thematically appropriate game. LJN's Friday the 13th is scary for many of the same reasons that the movies are -- sudden noises and scares from masked Jason Voorhees -- but it's also scary in a deeper way. Playing Friday the 13th is an exercise in hopelessness.
