You'll soon be able to don Jason Voorhees' iconic hockey mask and try to wipe out a group of campers (or flee from the masked menace) on Switch, as there's at last a release date for Friday the 13th: The Game on Nintendo's console. It emerged back in March developer Gun Media had a spring release window in mind for the Switch version, so it'll arrive a bit later than planned when it lands on August 13th.

Last year's Friday the 13th is a fun spin on the Jason Voorhees saga and the struggle of teens at Camp Crystal Lake to survive his onslaught. Fans had been looking forward to new features, but they'll have to remain content with the game's current state indefinitely. That's because publisher Gun Media was left with no choice but to cancel all future DLC and content updates -- all due to a copyright fight over the Friday the 13th movies.

After a slight delay, the first official Friday the 13th game since 1989 is available today on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. If you want to jump right into the action at Camp Crystal Lake, though, you might have to wait for Friday the 13th: The Game's servers to accommodate the apparent rush of people trying to kill the counselors/survive the maniacal Jason Voorhees. The official Twitter account has been dropping updates since the wee hours of this morning, so if you're having issues make sure to check there first.

Jason Voorhees is all about chasing his victims down and ensuring they meet grisly deaths. It's good to see him keeping true to form in Friday the 13th: The Game, which we're finally able to look at some decent gameplay for.

A slasher movie is only as good as its big bad, and that goes doubly so for interactive horror flicks. Take the upcoming Friday the 13th game, for example. To ensure that its Jason is as terrifying as possible, the team at Gun Media enlisted Kane Hodder, the man behind the hockey mask from the film franchise's seventh through tenth installments to terrorize the forever-randy camp counselors. Even though everyone in the video below are wearing mo-cap suits on a sound stage, it's hard to not cringe when Hodder tests the flexibility of the human leg, arm, neck, and, well, just about every appendage he lays hands on.

When Gun Media's Wes Keltner and Ronnie Hobbs announced Summer Camp, a slasher-inspired horror game set in a creepy campground, it was already more than an homage to Friday the 13th. The developers were open about their love of ghostly, hockey-masked murderer Jason Voorhees and they had even recruited Friday the 13th veterans to work on the game. This included actor, director and special-effects creator Tom Savini, the man behind the mask in Friday the 13th parts 7-10 Kane Hodder, and the film's original composer Harry Manfredini. "Basically, we were a Friday the 13th video game; we just didn't have the license," Hobbs said. Five months after the announcement of Summer Camp, Friday the 13th creator and director Sean S. Cunningham reached out to the team with his blessing -- and, after a few meetings, the license to the Jason Voorhees franchise.

If you thought that the Friday the 13th movies' legendary Jason Voorhees would make for a great Mortal Kombat fighter... well, you're right. NetherRealm has released a trailer showing how Jason will play when he arrives in Mortal Kombat X on May 5th, and he's every bit as ruthless as you'd expect for a mass murderer who's been killed many times over. You may not be sure whether you should wince or laugh -- without spoiling things, it's safe to say that Jason is especially good at carving his foes into pieces. You'll have to wait until May 12th to buy Jason by himself, but he could be worth it if you got a kick out of playing Freddy Krueger the last time around.

Round 1, FRIGHT! Jason Voorhees, the hockey-masked murderer from the classic Friday the 13th horror films, will be a playable character in Mortal Kombat X. Jason joins the fight as part of the Kombat Pack DLC pass, which includes four playable characters (including Jason), plus the Samurai Pack with three character skins: Ronin Kenshi, Samurai Shinnok and Jingu Kitana. The Kombat Pack is $30, though in the Americas it comes packed in with more expensive, special editions of the game -- The Kollector's Edition is $150, the Limited Edition is $100 and Premium is $90. Mortal Kombat X launches on April 14 for PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4; the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions have been delayed until summer. Sharpen your fighting skills (and your machete collection), and check out the Mortal Kombat X Jason teaser below.

  • JXE Streams: 'Splatterhouse' makes a mess of Friday the 13th

Jason Vorhees' hockey mask in Friday the 13th was an accident. Special effects man Martin Jay Sadoff just happened to really like hockey and have a bag of old-school gear with him when the third movie was in production. As pop culture serendipity goes, the mask is a brilliant success: when Friday the 13th rolls around, it's impossible not to think of that chipped face guard. In turn, it's impossible not to think of pulpy horror and that infamous date when you see something that even sort of looks like the mask. No doubt that was the logic at Namco when it conceived Splatterhouse -- one of gaming's earliest gore-fests -- and its masked star. That's also why we're playing a whole lot of Splatterhouse for you on JXE Streams!

In 1988, something terrible happened. We're not talking about lakeside sleepover camp mass murders (they shouldn't have been partially clothed and frolicking anyways), but a far worse fate ... Friday the 13th (the game). On this anniversary of the popular horror series' namesake, we thought it fit to reminisce about LJN's craptacular licensed NES game. We managed to dig up: The Angry Nintendo Nerd's retrospective on Friday the 13th (warning: NSFW!) This remix of the "Panic at Crystal Lake" track And a review at ToxicUniverse, which succinctly explains: "The game is 'challenging' in the sense that it is nearly impossible to fulfill any of the objectives it gives you, but unchallenging as it gives you no incentive to attempt them." Got any other Friday the 13th game links to share with the class? Stick them in the comments and we'll periodically update throughout the day ... if we can!
