Let's be real here for a sec: printers are almost always a snoozefest. But when it's a Roomba-like robotic printer at your beck and call -- spitting print-outs while following you around -- then things get a lot more exciting. Fuji Xerox recently tested its latest experimental model which has wheels so it can come to you, and lasers, so it can avoid obstacles along the way. During its test run in a Tokyo building, people had to access a special URL and by dragging a file into the browser window, could summon the roving printer. In order to protect everyone's privacy (as the machine could be accessed by anyone in the building's lounge), users had to authenticate their order by scanning their personal "Print Delivery Service" cards -- the printer won't actually be spewing out documents while rolling to their destination. Unfortunately, you can't get one of these machines to spice up your offices just yet, so you'll have to endure using those boring static printers (if you still even use one anymore) for now.

Fuji Xerox has showcased its latest e-paper model at SID in Boston. The 5-inch 600 x 800 display adjusts the electric field for each color, swinging them between the two layers of the screen. Instead of a typical color filter, an extra layer of white-colored particles between the visible and invisible layer, offering a blank surface when needed, while magenta and cyan particles are in charge of colors on the prototype. The company's already working on CMY arrangement to provide the full range of colors on the finished e-paper model and promise a color gamut wider than a newspaper. Hopefully, it will also involve a much thinner bezel.

Fuji Xerox is launching a Dropbox-esque cloud service that lets colleagues send, receive, share and print documents with colleagues to tie in with its new range of multifunction printers. The Working Folder service will be able to use a virtual filing cabinet to access documents online or via dedicated Windows, Mac, Android and iOS apps. The service launches in Japan on December 12th and will cost business owners $45 a month to get 10 users access to 10GB of storage -- with the option to spend more if they feel the need to splash the cash.

We've only seen a couple prototype color e-ink displays here and there, but this latest version from FujiXerox seems like its the furthest along in terms of refresh rate and usability. The A6 sized panel is made of three polymer-dispersed liquid-crystal layers, but it's still flexible, at just .4mm thick. No hard specs, really, but Tech-On says refresh time is less than one second -- just quick enough to make this viable for the next-gen Kindle, eh?[Via Tech-On!]

  • Fuji Xerox touts language-translating photocopier

Fuji Xerox has come up with some unique copying systems before, and it looks like its latest photocopier is no exception, with it promising to take a Japanese document and spit out a English, Chinese, or Korean translation on the fly (or vice versa). That's done by networking the printer to a dedicated translation server which, if similar systems are any indication, could well result in some unintentionally hilarious copies. What's more, the device also promises to preserve the original layout of the documents copied, with it apparently making use of some special algorithms to distinguish between text, lines and images. It's just a prototype at the moment, however, so there's no indication as to when or if we might see a commercial version.[Via Crave]
