'Tis the season for MMO closures, apparently. Following on the heels of ArchLord is this announcement about Remnant Knights. The title will close its doors on January 31, 2014. GameSamba will be providing cash shop compensation for "all Sambas spent in-game from November 1, 2013 until the closing date." Click the links below to read full details on claiming your Samba compensation. [Thanks MMOSerbia!]

  • Free for All: Here's looking at you, Remnant Knights

Sometimes I forget how nice it is to jump into a bright, cartoony world. MMOs can be such serious business these days. Remnant Knights, published by GameSamba, fills the need for escape into a wacky world. It's a truly free free-to-play game that hails from overseas. You know the type: a cash shop attached to an absolutely free client, no pay walls like the ones we see in Western freemium titles, gloriously cartoony and unabashedly cute. Remnant Knights plunks players down in a world of two schools: the Owl Academy and the Dragon Academy. I received a higher-level education with my press account, which made me a member of the Owls. Unfortunately there were no available slots left for me to create a new character, but let me tell you what I found anyway. Hint: It's wacky.

  • Realms Online introduces the Lamai

Adding a new race to a factional PvP game is always a dicey proposition with regard to faction balance, but Realms Online is taking a measured approach with its newest race. The diminutive Lamai have just been added, and they aren't beholden to any single faction -- they can join any realm and play as any class. That flexibility is meant to reflect their nature as an ancient race that left the planet ages ago. Of course, there's also the problem that if you're enticed by the new race, you'll have to start all over from the first level. As a promotion to help players interested in playing a Lamai, GameSamba is offering a sale on experience boosts in the game's shop. It's 25% off of level 30 scrolls, and 10 XP boosters for the price of eight. Not a bad deal if you want to level a new character, whether it's a lamai or something else. • Tribal Trouble 2 plows into open beta

Although GameSamba players have had access to Tribal Trouble 2's beta since the beginning of July, the company is now throwing open the door for any and all who want to try out this colorful MMORTS. This is, of course, the sequel to 2005's goofy Vikings-vs.-natives Tribal Trouble. Tribal Trouble 2 allows you to customize a personal chieftain who can set out to try to conquer the world, one village at a time while building one of his or her own. While we question the game's merits as a self-proclaimed MMO, the title boasts both single-player missions and PvP modes, as well as an achievement board. Plus, the game has units like the fearsome Chicken Punishers, so you know it's got to be good. If you're interested, you merely need to hop over to Tribal Trouble 2's website and sign up for the open beta. The game's both free-to-play and browser-based in order to be accessible to all. Additionally, hit the jump to check out the trailer!

  • GameSamba thanks testers by granting early access to Tribal Trouble 2

Open betas are a dime a dozen these days, but GameSamba is doing something a little different for testers of its browser-based Viking MMORTS called Tribal Trouble 2. Beginning today, former GameSamba guinea pigs will be given early access to the game even though the public testing phase doesn't start until the end of July. New testers aren't going to be left out in the cold, though, as a GameSamba press release indicates that the next few weeks will see several beta key giveaways via GameSamba partner websites. Tribal Trouble 2 is a casual-friendly take on the traditional MMORTS according to producer Slava Zatuchny. "Unlike the typical RTS, Tribal Trouble 2 is a more casual and fast-paced, with a whimsical style aimed at a broader demographic. While typical RTS games use mechanics ranging from complexity to realism, in Tribal Trouble 2 we chose instead to concentrate on fun," he said.

  • Realms Online celebrates the 4th of July in style with zombies and unicorns

The British are coming! The British are coming! And they want to... eat your brains? In perhaps the oddest holiday event we've ever heard of, Realms Online is featuring a Redcoat zombie invasion that starts today. Redcoat zombies are swarming over the warzone, and it's up to you to fight for independence from brain-noshing. Participating in the event will give players the chance to earn special Independence Day costumes until July 15th. Zombie invasions aren't the only things going on during the Dawn of Freedom event -- GMs will be throwing firework shows, banners will be playing the American national anthem, and other fun activities will be available. Realms Online is also selling 4th of July-themed items in its item shop for those with particularly strong patriotic persuasions. And what 4th of July event would be complete without... unicorns? Unicorns? OK, we'll roll with that. GameSamba is going to post a code on the Realms Online Facebook page that will let players use a unicorn for free for a week before it goes on sale in the store.

  • GameSamba adding an offer wall

The last time we heard the term offer wall around these parts, it was in reference to a Turbine initiative that sparked an outpouring of fan anger centered on Dungeons and Dragons Online. The company ultimately did away with the plan due to concerns over Turbine's third-party partner (Super Rewards) as well as the general shadiness associated with trading a player's personal information. Today, Realms Online publisher GameSamba has announced its own offer wall, this time in concert with Guppy Media and Peanut Labs. GameSamba's press release says that the new deal "complements [its] existing partnership with Super Rewards, which not only provides free offers but also allows access to over 100 global payment methods." Super Rewards, Guppy Media, and Peanut Labs are advertising firms that pay GameSamba for leads, in effect exposing GameSamba customers to various third-party products that they might not otherwise be aware of via surveys, special offers, and the like. GameSamba, in turn, gives Sambas (the company's virtual currency) to those gamers who meet certain requirements relating to the third-party advertisers. You can learn more about the arrangement on the GameSamba forums.

While you may have only heard about GameSamba from our recent beta key giveaway post, the company's intent is to hit the ground running in the free-to-play market this year. How will it accomplish that? The plan is to bring out a bunch of fun games that all kinds of people will enjoy. Currently, the company's site only shows two games -- Remnant Knights and Cocolani Island -- which are both in closed beta. However, we understand from our talk at GDC that the publisher is working on releasing six more titles in the near future so it can give players even more gaming choices. For now, we wanted to focus on finding out more about the two GameSamba free-to-play titles that players will be able to check out soon: Remnant Knights and Cocolani Island. So if you like the idea of adorable anime girls with obnoxiously enormous guns or tiki-themed minigame madness, join us behind the break for videos and more -- and don't forget the galleries! %Gallery-118257%

Game conventions are normally all about the big guns, and this year's GDC is no different. We've talked to them all (as you'll see as the week rolls on), but sometimes it's the little guys that provide the really interesting nuggets. Take GameSamba and its whimsical free-to-play Remnant Knights title, for instance. While the game is currently in closed beta (with a true open beta to come at an as-yet undetermined future date), Massively editor-in-chief Shawn Schuster learned about a special one-week beta test after speaking with GameSamba earlier this afternoon. The testing phase starts tomorrow and is open to anyone and everyone. You can sign up, as well as learn more about the game's Priests, Gunners, and Crashers, at the official website. While you're at it, have a look at the Remnant Knights trailer after the cut. Finally, don't forget to check back later in the week for an interview with the GameSamba team.

Much of North America has snow on the brain this week, and while the population as a whole can't dig itself out and jet off to a warmer locale, there's a nice virtual substitute to help while away those chilly hours. Even if you're not part of the snowbound MMO population, Cocolani Island offers a variety of features: it will run on both PC and Mac systems, it offers player housing, and it has designated PvP areas. Cocolani Island carries a heavy focus on minigames as well, offering shooters, puzzles, racing, and more. Want to check out the closed beta? We've got closed beta keys, so check out our giveaway page. Once you've got your key, all you need to do is visit the Cocolani Island site, enter your email address, and enter your beta key when prompted. Enjoy your stay on Cocolani Island!
